Daily Sports Roundup: December 30

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: Nebraska takes on Washington in the Holiday Bowl, while Villanova hits the hardwood against Temple, and the Mavs play host to the Spurs.

Colliding on the gridiron . . .

There are four bowl games on tap for Thursday, with Army vs. SMU (-7) in the Armed Forces Bowl, Kansas State vs. Syracuse (-1) in the Pinstripe Bowl, North Carolina (-2) vs. Tennessee in the Music City Bowl, and No. 17 Nebraska (-14) vs. Washington in the Holiday Bowl. The 17th-ranked Cornhuskers (10-3 SU, 5-7 ATS) will be looking to bounce back from a 23-20 loss to Oklahoma last time out, while the Huskies (6-6 SU, 4-7-1 ATS) beat Washington State 35-28 last game for their third straight victory. Nebraska pounded Washington 56-21 on the road when the teams met in September. Oddsmakers have the total for the matchup at Qualcomm Stadium pegged at 53 points.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA's schedule for Thursday has New York at Orlando, Utah at Portland, and San Antonio at Dallas. The Spurs and Mavericks have already met once this season, with Dallas picking up a 103-94 road win as a 4.5-point underdog on November 26. Dirk Nowitzki, who has been dealing with a sore knee this week, led the way for the Mavericks in that contest with 26 points, while Tyson Chandler and Shawn Marion contributed 19 points apiece. Jason Kidd picked up 12 points and six assists in that win. Manu Ginobili poured in a game-high 31 points in that losing cause for the Spurs. Tim Duncan had 15 points and eight rebounds in that contest, and George Hill had 21 points.

As well, there are four games involving ranked teams on the college hoops slate for Thursday, with No. 16 BYU at Buffalo, Lipscomb at No. 21 Memphis, Old Dominion at No. 10 Missouri, and No. 25 Temple at No. 8 Villanova. The 25th-ranked Owls (9-2 SU, 7-3 ATS) got past Ohio 76-65 on the road last game, with Rahlir Jefferson tossing in 18 points. The Wildcats (10-1 SU, 3-4 ATS) are coming off an easy 76-36 road win over Monmouth. Temple beat Villanova 75-65 on the road when the teams met back in 2009.

Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are six games on the NHL's schedule for Thursday, with Columbus at Toronto, Boston at Atlanta, Montreal at Tampa Bay, Colorado at Edmonton, Philadelphia at Los Angeles, and San Jose at Chicago. The Sharks are already 2-0 against the Blackhawks this season, beating them 5-2 at home on November 24 and 2-1 at home on December 11. Ryane Clowe scored both goals for the Sharks in that December victory, including the overtime winner. Antti Niemi stopped 28 of 29 Chicago shots. Jordan Hendry had the lone Chicago goal that day, and Corey Crawford made 28 saves.

Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Talia Crichton (knee) Washington Huskies - The Huskies head into Thursday’s Holiday Bowl against Nebraska with only five healthy defensive linemen. With Cameron Elisara and Semisi Tokolahi had already out for the year, Talia Crichton reinjured his knee during Monday’s workout. That means the Huskies won’t be able to rotate the line like they want to and will need Kalani Aldrich and tackle Chris Robinson to step up.

Notes and tips

Syracuse will get an emotional boost Thursday as senior punter Rob Long will join the team in New York and may take part in his regular captain duties. Long told the team he would be at the Pinstripe Bowl to watch the game with his teammates after learning he needed surgery on Dec. 11 to remove a tumor from his brain and fulfilled his promise this week.

Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews left Tuesday’s game with a shoulder injury and didn’t return after he was hit hard into the boards. The Blackhawks were just starting to get healthy with Patrick Kane and Marian Hossa returning to the lineup. Chicago wouldn’t comment on Toews’ status but from the way he left the ice, don’t expect him back anytime soon. Early estimates have him out for two weeks.

Dallas Mavericks beat writer Eddie Sefko expects Dirk Nowitzki to miss Thursday’s big game against San Antonio. Nowitzki sprained his knee in Monday’s win over Oklahoma City, but said after the game that he didn’t believe the injury was serious. X-rays came back negative, but Notwitzki also said the knee had been bothering him for about two weeks, so Dallas may proceed with caution.

-- Illinois whacked Baylor 38-14, but they scored a TD in last minute on a bootleg play, and I'm thinking Baylor coach Briles wasn't happy about it- he quietly let Illinois coach Zook know about it afterwards.

-- Arizona was 7-1 at one point this season, but finishes 7-6 after they got spanked 36-10 by Oklahoma State in the Alamo Bowl.

-- Miami Heat ended Houston's winning streak with a 125-119 win in Houston; Heat is taking everyone's best shot, and still winning a lot.

Thursday's List of 13: Things I (re-)learned this past year

13) I learned that a lot of people mistake kindness for weakness; its best to avoid these people.

12) I learned what a vuvuzela is, even bought a couple for $9.99 each. Most people are annoyed by the sound they make, which means it is $20 very well-spent.

11) I learned that a 95-degree July day in upstate NY is less comfortable than a 113-degree day in Las Vegas; how do I know? Walked from MGM to Planet Hollywood last summer, got up to my room, turned on the TV and saw it was 113 out. I wasn’t even that warm. When its 95 and humid in NY, every step is an effort.

10) Speaking of Las Vegas, I learned that the NBA Summer League is a great way to spend a whole day for only $28. Too bad there probably won’t be one this summer.

9) I learned that when 8 inches of snow falls and the winds are howling at 40 mph, that the 95-degree day in July doesn’t seem so oppressive.

8) I learned once again that the NCAA tournament is survive/advance; UTEP led Butler by 6 at the half of a first round game. Who would’ve guessed at that point, that Bulldogs would come within a hoop of the national title?

7) I learned again that it doesn’t cost extra to be nice to people.

6) I learned that the most important person in an NFL franchise is the personnel man; the leading rusher and leading sacker in the NFL this year were both undrafted. The Chiefs won the AFC West- they only drafted one of their five starting offensive linemen. Special teams are won by teams with deep rosters. ESPN should do more with this, highlighting a team’s front office.

5) I learned that I don’t trust people who whisper a lot. If its not in a library or in church, why you whispering?

4) I learned that a summer night at a minor league ballgame is hard to top.

3) I learned that with solid pitching, even a team with wretched hitting can go 81-81.

2) I learned that if you’re 6-3 and flying cross country, its best to fly in the emergency aisle, so you can stretch your legs out.

Everything is up in the air for the Portland Trail Blazers right now.

Nobody knows what’s going on with Brandon Roy’s knee from one night to the next and trade rumors continue to swirl around the club.

The latest is that instead of accepting a trade to a non-contending team, Marcus Camby would rather retire. Speculation is that Portland is looking to move both Camby and Andre Miller as the Blazers search for consistency.

"Camby wasn't happy about the rumor and would not take kindly to being traded to Charlotte or any other non-contending team,” an ESPN source reports. "He's made plenty of money. He'd rather play, but he's at the point in his career where he doesn't want to get bounced around from team to team. If he's traded, it would have to be to a contender.”

Portland pulled off a nice 96-91 win over this Jazz club a few days ago as 7.5-point underdogs, but then took a 95-77 loss on the chin courtesy of the Carmelo-less Denver Nuggets. Utah plays Wednesday night in Los Angeles against the Clippers before heading to Portland.

Look for the Jazz to get their revenge.

Temple Owls at No. 8 Villanova Wildcats (-6)

If you’re looking for some old fashioned grind-it-out hoops on Thursday night, this is a good place to start.

The Wildcats have won five straight, but have covered just once over the last five games with a posted pointspread, while Temple has helped its supporters to the pay window in five of the last six.

Villanova is coming off a 76-36 beatdown of Monmouth before the break that had coach Jay Wright pretty please about the state of the team heading into conference play.

"That was our best defensive game of the year," Wright told reporters after the game. "Monmouth runs a good offense, and we got ourselves really fired up for it. We were very pleased."

There have been some concerns about Villanova through the non-conference schedule. The Wildcats certainly have the talent to compete in the Big East, but have lacked focus at times. They’re also shooting just under 45 percent from the floor, good for 14th in the conference.

They’ll have to make much better use of any good looks they get against Temple, which is holding opposing teams to just over 58 points per game and already has an upset win over Georgetown on its resume.

Old Dominion Monarchs at No. 10 Missouri Tigers (-8)

Mizzou is working on its third starting point guard of the season, but so far the lineup juggling has done nothing to slow down the Tigers.

Missouri is looking for its eighth straight win on Thursday and has covered in each of the last three games the club has seen a spread.

Junior point guard Matt Pressey is expected to start again against the Monarchs after he was pushed into the starting lineup when his younger brother Phil broke a finger in practice before the break. Phil Pressey was in the starting five after Michael Dixon was suspended for two games and Dixon has come off the bench since then.

"Matt continues to play the game the right way," coach Mike Anderson said. "It just takes a little while to get his feel with a new team, a new group of guys. And he's comfortable now, and guys are comfortable playing with him."

The Monarchs aren’t a team Mizzou should overlook. They have four starters back from the club that upset Notre Dame in the first round of the NCAA tournament last season and allow just over 60 points per game.

The key for Old Dominion here will be to contain Mizzou’s offense that averages nearly 86 points an outing.
