Bettors' best friend: Sunday's wagering tips

    Who’s hot

NHL: Pittsburgh Penguins are 8-1 in their past 9 road games.

NHL: St. Louis Blues are 20-8 in their past 28 road games.

NBA: Memphis Grizzlies are 7-2 ATS in their past 9 overall.

NBA: Washington Wizards have seen the over hit in 8 of their past 9 road games.

NFL: Jacksonville Jaguars have seen the over hit in 7 of their past 8 games overall.

    Who’s not

NHL: Columbus Blue Jackets have seen the under go 6-2-1 in their past 9 games overall.

NHL: Edmonton Oilers are 14-43 in their past 57 road games.

NBA: Denver Nuggets are 5-12-1 ATS in their past 18 games overall.

NBA: Los Angeles Clippers are 0-9 ATS in their past 9 Sunday games.

NFL: Tennessee Titans are 3-11 ATS in their past 14 against teams with a winning record.

    Key stat

0 – Times in NBA history that teams that have played on Christmas Day have met in a rematch in the NBA Finals in June. A Dec. 25 game has been an NBA tradition dating back to the 1940s, and oddly enough this trend holds true all the way over the course of seven decades. So those dreaming of a Lakers-Heat championship round? Keep dreaming.

    Injuries that shouldn’t be overlooked

The Cincinnati Bengals might not have any bullets in the gun for their matchup with the San Diego Chargers on Sunday. Receiver Terrell Owens will be sidelined the remainder of the season with a leg injury and now there is news that Chad Ochocinco is listed as questionable with bone spurs in his left foot. Running back Bernard Scott also has been limited by a toe injury this week and third-down back Brian Leonard has been ruled out. No Ochocinco, no chance.

    Biggest game on the slate

New York Giants at Green Bay Packers (-3, 43)

    Notable quotable
"It was just a basketball play, where things are going to get physical. He's a big man, that's what he's supposed to do. It's just basketball. I'd get tired if I kept on driving to the hole too, if that was someone else." – Bulls guard Derrick Rose on getting knocked to the ground several times by Knicks forward Amar’e Stoudemire.

    Tips and notes

The injury news for the Buffalo Sabres just got worse. Derek Roy suffered a leg injury earlier this week and now the diagnosis is official – Roy will miss 4-6 months with a torn quad tendon. Roy, the team’s most consistent offensive threats this season, leads the team with 35 points – 10 more than the next closest player. Tim Connolly also remains out of the lineup, meaning that the Sabres now will be without their top two centers for an extended period of time.

The hits just keep coming for the Mississippi State Bulldogs. The team is 8-5 SU but a horrendous 1-8 ATS and now will be without starter Elgin Bailey and star Renardo Sidney indefinitely as the teammates made national headlines when they got into an extensive fist fight in the stands as they sat in the stands following the team’s game in the Diamond Head Classic in Hawaii. The SEC is pretty bad this season, but the Bulldogs are just awful.

The Jaguars will suffer a severe blow to their offense and rushing attack if Maurice Jones-Drew misses the team’s game against Washington with a nagging knee injury. Jones-Drew hasn’t missed a game due to injury during his five year career and his knee injury last made him very ineffective as he rushed for only 46 yards, snapping a streak of 6 straight games with at least 100 yards. Washington isn’t a good team, but Jones-Drew is a huge piece of the Jaguars’ success.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Washington Wizards at San Antonio Spurs

The Washington Wizards couldn’t be much worse on the road.

The Wizards are 0-13 SU in opponents gyms this season, struggling to keep road games close, let alone win one. Of the team’s 13 road losses, eight have been by double digits as the team is a mere 4-9 ATS on away courts.

Washington is around middle of the pack on offense on the road, averaging 96.3 points per game, but gets easily rattled by opposing fans, turning the ball over 16.9 times per game as a visitor, the second-worst mark in the league. On defense, those turnovers lead to easy baskets, as the team gives up a whopping 103.6 points per game, among the bottom third in the NBA.

"With the guys we have on this team, we can win so many more games. We just can't figure it out," Wizards center Hilton Armstrong said. "We start off soft and passive and always have to play an uphill battle. We fight back, but don't come up with a win. If we play the same way for 48 minutes, our record would be completely different and it's so frustrating, because I know guys could do it. We showed it."

However, don’t expect the Wizards to show much of anything against one of the best teams in the league coming off a humiliating loss in Orlando. Washington is 0-8 ATS in its past eight against San Antonio.

      Pick: Spurs

Atlanta Hawks at New Orleans Hornets

Joe Johnson’s elbow seems to be doing just fine.

The guard underwent elbow surgery this Fall and his recent string of improving play is a big reason for the team reasserting itself as a threat in the Eastern Conference. Johnson is averaging 17.5 points, 5.3 rebounds and 6.8 assists per game since returning from his surgery – all up from his averages for the season. Not coincidentally, the team is 3-1 SU since he returned to action.

"That's what great players do," Cavaliers coach Byron Scott said of Johnson, who dropped 23 points in a recent win over Cleveland. "Those guys are difference-makers. Joe's not an All-Star and one of the better players in this league for nothing. When they needed some big shots, he seemed to make the timely ones."

Meantime, the Hornets have dropped five of their past eight games and won just three against the spread over that span.

      Pick: Hawks

Richmond Spiders at Seton Hall Pirates (-2)

Seton Hall still has some healing to do after a tough loss to Dayton earlier this week.

The Pirates held a 40-26 halftime lead over the Flyers, but then went ice cold from the field, shooting a mere 25.8 percent in the second half to watch their lead dissolve in the final 20 minutes. Seton Hall lost the game 69-65, blowing the cover for backers as an 8-point home favorite.

“We played really good defense in the first half, but we gave them five straight layups in the first five minutes (of the second half),” head coach Kevin Willard told reporters. “We gave them easy shots. We gave them momentum.”

The big issue facing the Pirates is how to answer back when teams go on these runs. With leading scorer Jeremy Hazell out with a wrist injury, Seton Hall does not have that go-to guy to stop the bleeding. The team gave up 13 straight points to the Flyers in the second half Wednesday and also allowed 18 offensive rebounds.

Point guard Jordan Theodore tried to put the team on his back, averaging more than 12 points per game this season. However, the 6-foot junior shot just 5 for 17 from the floor and turned the ball over three times, finishing with 13 points and five assists in the loss.

“Jordan played a little bit out of control for the first time this season,” Willard told the media.

Seton Hall won’t be able to survive another letdown, especially against a savvy Richmond team that has been well traveled early in the season. The Spiders have wins over Purdue, VCU and Arizona State headlining their non-conference resume.

          Pick: Richmond

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Columbus Blue Jackets at Chicago Blackhawks

Blue Jackets coach Scott Arniel didn’t mince words after his team suffered a 7-3 defeat to Vancouver.

“It didn’t look like we really wanted to play tonight in the first period, let alone the rest of the game,” Arniel said. “I want to apologize to the fans. Professional athletes are paid to perform and when you don’t do your job you’re going to get criticized. The turnovers, the no compete and lack of professionalism bothered me, and that wasn’t just the first period. It was men against pee wees out there.”

Sounds like a bad time to head to Chicago to face the defending Stanley Cup champions.

Overall, the Blue Jackets have dropped five of their past six but only the most recent was by more than three goals. Including a pair of overtime losses and another one-goal defeat, it looks like Columbus is beginning to give up.

On the other bench, the Blackhawks have won three straight against playoff caliber teams, beating Nashville, Los Angeles and Detroit by a combined score of 11-4. The Blackhawks are trending up and the Blue Jackets are starting to make late April tee times.

              Pick: Blackhawks

Toronto Maple Leafs at New Jersey Devils (-139, 5)

So will new Devils coach Jacques Lemaire make a huge impact behind the bench for one of the worst teams in the NHL? Well for starters, it doesn’t appear he will bench his star forward, as fired boss John MacLean had $100 million man Ilya Kovalchuk ride the pine for a stretch in October.

However, captain Jamie Langenbrunner has been known for his clashes with Lemaire.

We’ll see,” Langenbrunner said. “Right? You guys obviously wrote a lot about what that was like last year – some truth, some not. I respect him as a coach. I think he’s a very smart hockey man. We’ll do what’s best for the team. He’s a very good hockey guy.”

Overall, the team has lost four straight by a margin of 20-4 and nine of its past 10. Things can’t get much worse for the Devils, regardless of who is behind the bench.

Things won’t be perfect in New Jersey, but they will be better.

              Pick: Devils

                  Daily Sports Roundup: December 26

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Jets and Bears hit the gridiron for a game in Chicago, the Packers are home to the Giants, and the Hornets play host to the Hawks.

                  Colliding on the gridiron . . .

A pair of 10-4 teams will meet on the gridiron in Chicago on Sunday afternoon when the Bears (10-4 SU, 7-6-1 ATS) play host to the Jets (10-4 SU, 8-6 ATS). The Bears pounded the Vikings 40-14 outside at the University of Minnesota's field in their last game on Monday night, as Jay Cutler threw for 194 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. Matt Forte ran for 92 yards for Chicago, which has now clinched the NFC North title. The Jets got back into the win column by beating the Steelers 22-17 in Pittsburgh last week, and remain in line for a Wild Card berth in the AFC. Oddsmakers have the Bears listed as slight 1-point favorites for Sunday, with the total pegged at 36.5.

This week's Sunday night NFL matchup has Minnesota at Philadelphia (-14.5), while the rest of the afternoon action has Tennessee at Kansas City (-5), Baltimore (-3.5) at Cleveland, New England (-8.5) at Buffalo, San Francisco at St. Louis (-2.5), Detroit at Miami (-3.5), Washington at Jacksonville (-7), Houston (-3) at Denver, Indianapolis (-3) at Oakland, San Diego (-7.5) at Cincinnati, Seattle at Tampa Bay (-6), and the Giants at Green Bay (-3). The Giants (9-5 SU, 7-7 ATS) fell 38-31 at home to the Eagles last week, with Eli Manning throwing for 289 yards with four TDs and one interception. The Packers (8-6 SU, 8-6 ATS) are coming off a 31-27 loss in New England, with backup quarterback Matt Flynn passing for 251 yards with three scores and one interception. The oddsmakers have the total for the New York/Green Bay contest listed at 43 points.

As well, there's one bowl game on the college football schedule for Sunday, with Florida International vs. Toledo in the Little Caesars Bowl at Ford Field in Detroit. Florida International (6-6 SU, 6-6 ATS) has been listed as the 1.5-point underdog against Toledo (8-4 SU, 7-5 ATS) for this matchup, with the total for the contest set at 56 points.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up seven games on Sunday, with Phoenix at the Clippers, Minnesota at Cleveland, Chicago at Detroit, Memphis at Indiana, Washington at San Antonio, Philadelphia at Denver, and Atlanta at New Orleans. The Hawks (19-12 SU, 13-18 ATS) are coming off a 98-84 home win over the Cavaliers on Wednesday night, with Joe Johnson scoring a team-high 23 points and Al Horford pitching in with 18 points. The Hornets (17-12 SU, 14-13-2 ATS) beat the Nets 105-91 at home in their last game on Wednesday, as Emeka Okafor scored 21 points to go along with 10 rebounds, and Chris Paul added 12 points and 14 assists. David West tossed in 18 points in that game.

As well, the lone college basketball game on the schedule for Sunday is Richmond vs. Seton Hall at the Prudential Center in Newark. The Spiders are 9-3 SU and 5-4 ATS so far this season, while the Pirates sit at 6-5 SU and 4-4 ATS through their first 11 games. Those teams last met back in December 2005, with Richmond winning 60-49 that game.

                  Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, the NHL returns from its Christmas break with 11 games on Sunday: Columbus at Chicago, Tampa Bay at Atlanta, Nashville at St. Louis, Pittsburgh at Ottawa, Montreal at the Islanders, Toronto at New Jersey, Washington at Carolina, Detroit at Minnesota, Phoenix at Dallas, Edmonton at Vancouver, and Anaheim at Los Angeles. The Ducks and Kings have met once this season already, with Anaheim picking up a 2-0 shutout win at home on November 29. Jonas Hiller made 27 saves for the Ducks in that victory, while Cam Fowler and Jason Blake both scored. Jonathan Quick had 17 saves for L.A.

                    Sunday's six-pack

-- Why did the Knicks wear green uniforms yesterday?

-- Bad loss for Utah Utes Saturday, losing by 3 to San Diego team that had been 0-10 against Division I competition.

-- Mississippi State's season from hell continued in Hawai'i, as State went down by 19 at the half, and lost 68-57 to the hosts. Bulldogs are down three key players, none because of injuries. What a mess.

-- Orlando started game on 13-0 run, ended it on 15-1 run, as they beat the Celtics 86-78, ending Boston's 14-game win streak, in game Rondo missed for the Celtics.

-- Did you know the Knicks haven't had a guy in the All-Star Game in 18 years? Amare Stoudemire will end that drought this year.

-- NBA players could wear any kind of sneakers they wanted for the games Saturday; some of them looked like bowling shoes.

Sunday's List of 13: Things I'm looking for in the NFL Sunday

Now that the NFL season is almost over, circumstances will dictate how some teams approach these last couple games. A score in another town could clinch a playoff spot that means another team doesn't have to try as hard. Here's what we're looking for on Sunday/Monday........

                    13) Giants-Packers have a playoff game before the playoffs; Pack's year is over if they lose. Giants are in freefall if they lose. Should be nice and toasty in Lambeau Field for 3:15 local time kickoff.

                    12) Raiders are 5-0 in division games, 2-7 outside their division. Indy has to win to keep its lead in AFC South, since Jaguars figure to win against Washington. Oakland will try to run ball down the Colts' throats.

                    11) Rams are 6-8, 49ers 5-9; St Louis can send the Niners packing with a home win. Odd note: OJ Atogwe, one of Rams' best defensive players, is engaged to Mike Singletary's daughter.

                    10) If the Rams win, Seattle's 4:15 game in Tampa doesn't matter much, since next week's Ram-Seahawk game would decide the division. Only way Seattle-Tampa game would matter is if Seahawks lost, then they tied the Rams next week. St Louis would then win a division title.

                    9) Steelers won Thursday, Ravens need win on Lake Erie to keep pace in AFC North, in the city they used to call home. Nothing Browns would like better than to deal Baltimore a crippling defeat.

                    8) Bears already clinched their division, but they're playing for the first round bye, which is huge, since a week off helps lot of players heal up. Jets haven't clinched anything, but they're probably a Wild Card team. If New England opens up a lead in Buffalo, will Jets sit Sanchez?

                    7) Bills have really been tough out second half of season, but against the Patriots, they've been an automatic out, losing 14 of last 15 meetings. If Brady still has the flu, would they pull him early, if the Jets are losing?

                    6) Chiefs need to keep winning to stay ahead of charging San Diego in AFC West; Titans aren't dead yet, but need help from Redskins/Raiders to make up ground in AFC South.

                    5) Bengals won last week; bad teams seldom win two games in row. San Diego has to win out and hope the Chiefs slip up. Cold weather game in Cincinnati, but the Chargers have been very hot lately.

                    4) The circus that is the 2010 Vikings moves to Philly; who plays QB? Who knows, but they're expecting 6-12 inches of snow in Philly, so the Vikings have another frigid night ahead of them. Poor Joe Webb; he's not exactly getting ideal conditions to audition for the 2011 QB job.

                    3) Rex Grossman played in the Gator Bowl every year when he was the Florida Gators' QB; now he's the enemy as he leads the Redskins into a game with Jacksonville that the Jags need to keep heat on the Colts in the AFC South race. Redskins played their arch-rival Dallas last week

                    2) Miami is 1-6 at home, 6-1 on road; their last home game is against a Detroit team that snapped a three-year road losing streak last week in Tampa. Coach Sparano is said to be on shaky ground with Bill Parcells now out of the picture with the Dolphins.

                    1) Texans coach Kubiak came to Houston from the Broncos, where he coached after backing up John Elway for years; with Elway rumored to be joining Denver's front office neat year, could they bring Kubiak back as coach if the Texans cut him loose?

Seton Hall is 5-4, mainly because their best scorer (Hazell) has a broken wrist; Pirates are 1-3 vs Atlantic 14 teams, losing to Xavier-Dayton and Temple- they beat UMass by 25. Richmond is 2-1 as underdog, beating Purdue on neutral court, winning at Arizona State; Spiders play at #286 pace, Princeton-like. Seton Hall plays at #52 pace, so they'll need to use defense to speed game up, hard to do. A-14 underdogs of 3 or less pts are 6-5 vs spread, 3-2 on road. Big East home faves of 5 points or less are 9-2 against the spread.
