Bettors' best friend: Saturday's wagering tips
Who’s hot
New York Knicks are 15-4 ATS in their past 19 overall.
Boston Celtics are 9-3 ATS in their past 12 road games.
Oklahoma City Thunder have seen the over hit in 9 of their past 12 home games.
Miami Heat are 10-3 ATS in their past 13 games overall.
Golden State Warriors are 4-1 ATS in their past 5 games against the Northwest Division.
Key stat
0 – Passing touchdowns in the past 16 quarters for the Arizona Cardinals. The team’s anemic aerial attack is next to last in the league after being among the best in the NFL during quarterback Kurt Warner’s tenure in Arizona. Since rookie John Skelton took over for Matt Leinart, Derek Anderson and fellow freshman Max Hall, the team has improved, but is just 1-2 in his three starts and failed to crack more than 12 points in both losses.
Injuries that shouldn’t be overlooked
The Boston Celtics could be very shorthanded in their frontcourt against the Orlando Magic. Rookie center Semih Erden has started a handful of games with injuries to centers Jermaine and Shaquille O’Neal and forward Kendrick Perkins sitting out until at least the end of January following knee surgery. But now Erden, who is averaging 4.0 points and 2.5 rebounds per game, is sick with the flu and may miss the game against the Magic on Christmas with the illness. This means that a limited Shaq and forwards Glen “Big Baby” Davis and rookie Luke Harangody could be the team’s only frontcourt complements to Kevin Garnett.
Biggest games on the slate
Dallas Cowboys at Arizona Cardinals (+6.5, 45)
Notable quotable
"We have to throw away all the scouting reports and do it all over again, so that's no fun. They've added talent, there's no doubt about it. Whether they can get it together, we'll see." -- Celtics coach Doc Rivers on the Magic's roster changes.
Tips and notes
Rams quarterback Sam Bradford has hit a rookie wall. The odds on favorite to win Offensive Rookie of the Year has no touchdowns and five interceptions the past three weeks and now faces a virtual must-win against San Francisco. They key for opposing defenses has been forcing Bradford to remain stationary in the pocket and hold onto the ball too long as he must progress to his third and fourth option. “You know you don’t want Sam Bradford to be on the move,” ESPN Analyst Trent Dilfer said. “One of the ways you protect Sam and that offensive line is a lot of bootleg and play-action passes. . . . Then all of a sudden teams say, ‘Wait a second, we can take away the quick throw, we make him go somewhere else with the ball, make him wait.’”
The Dallas Cowboys continue to have a dicey situation at running back. Marion Barber will return this weekend against the Cardinals as he heals from a calf injury that has sidelined him since Thanksgiving. Meantime, Felix Jones missed practice during the short week and could see his workload reduced. However, Jones has 1,085 yards from scrimmage and Barber has just 362. Dallas needs to decide on the fresher player or the more dynamic one.
Sacramento Kings guard Tyreke Evans, who has been battling a myriad of injuries including plantar fasciitis, announced that he will skip all of the All-Star Weekend festivities in February. The reinging Rookie of the Year is shooting a horrid 37.6 percent from the floor and averaging just 16.2 points and 5.2 assists per game. As a result, the team is a meager 5-22 and needs its leader to get better. Fast. “I’m going to take All-Star weekend off and just try to rest it up he said. “I’ll talk to the doctors and see what I can do while I’ve got that time off.”

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chicago Bulls at New York Knicks (-1.5, 205)
The Chicago Bulls frontcourt could be considerably thin on Christmas Day.
Forward Carlos Boozer (19.1 ppg, 8.4 rpg) has finally hit his stride after missing the start of the season with a hand injury. However, he has had a revolving door of companions around him, as center Joakim Noah is sidelined with a thumb injury and Taj Gibson is suffering from a concussion that has limited his practice and put him in coach Tom Thibodeau’s dog house.
As a result, 38-year-old veteran Kurt Thomas has been shoved into the starting lineup and forced to play a sizeable share of the team’s frontcourt minutes. He’s combined for 16 points, 15 rebounds and seven blocks his past two games, but also racked up 10 fouls.
"As of right now (Thomas will continue to start)," Thibodeau said before Friday morning's practice. "But that's subject to change depending upon who we're playing against. I like the size and strength of Kurt and I think it's a good combination with Carlos (Boozer)."
It’s doubtful, however, that a combination of Boozer and Thomas will be able to slow down Amar’e Stoudemire (26.4 ppg, 9.3 rpg) and the rest of the Knicks’ up-tempo attack.
Pick: Knicks
Denver Nuggets at Oklahoma City Thunder (-6.5, 213)
The holiday season has been a difficult time for Carmelo Anthony and the Denver Nuggets. The team is suffering through playing without its star, while the forward has returned to Baltimore due to the death of his sister.
Anthony is expected to miss the game as he remains in Maryland to grieve with his family. This leaves Denver thin yet again as the team is 1-2 without their franchise player this season. In the team’s most recent game, a 109-103 loss to San Antonio, the team just didn’t have enough offense to keep pace in the fourth quarter.
And there is no one that the Thunder would rather see missing than Anthony.
Melo has dominated Oklahoma City, leading his squad to wins in 11 of the team’s past 13 meetings as he has averaged 29.6 points against the Thunder since the start of the 2005-06 season, his best against any Western Conference foe.
The Nuggets will be rested and have talent, but missing Anthony will be too much to overcome.
Pick: Thunder

Tips and Trends
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Miami Heat at Los Angeles Lakers [ABC | 5:00 PM ET]
HEAT: Miami is finally starting to play to the level of the lofty expectations placed on them. The Heat are arguably the 2nd hottest team in the NBA, and stand 22-9 SU and 15-16 ATS overall this year. The Heat are 10-5 SU on the road this season. While Miami has been brilliant of late and are on top of the Southeast division, they've only beaten 5 teams with a winning record. F LeBron James leads the Heat with 24.7 PPG this season, 5th most in the NBA. James is also averaging a team high 7.1 APG, as well as 6.5 RPG. F Chris Bosh is averaging 18.4 PPG and 8 RPG for the Heat. Defensively, Miami is limiting opponents to 91.2 PPG this year, best in the NBA. The Heat are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games against the Western Conference. Miami is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games against a team with a winning SU record. The Heat are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games following an ATS win. Miami is 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games following a SU win of more than 10 points. The Heat are 10-3 ATS in their last 13 games overall. Miami is 2-6 ATS in their last 8 Saturday games.
Heat are 7-1 ATS last 8 road games.
Over is 6-0 last 6 games against a team with a winning percentage above .600%.
Key Injuriew - G Dwyane Wade (knee) is probable.
Projected Score: 93
LAKERS: (-2, O/U 196) Los Angeles has won 8 of their past 10 games, but they are coming off a shocking home loss to Milwaukee, in which they were a double digit favorite. The Lakers were obviously caught looking ahead to today's high profile matchup with Miami. Los Angeles is 21-8 SU and 14-15 ATS overall this season. Los Angeles is 10-3 SU at home this season. Tonight marks the shortest line the Lakers have seen at home this season. Los Angeles is averaging 105.5 PPG this season, 6th best in the NBA. G Kobe Bryant is averaging a team high 25.7 PPG this season, 3rd best in the entire NBA. F Pau Gasol is averaging 19.6 PPG and a team high 11.1 RPG this year. Los Angeles has a strong bench this year, with 3 players coming off the pine to average at least 5 PPG. The Lakers are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 Saturday games. Los Angeles is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games against the Eastern Conference. The Lakers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall. Los Angeles is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following a SU loss. The Lakers are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 home games. The Lakers are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games against a team with a winning SU record.
Lakers are 7-1 ATS last 8 games following a SU loss of more than 10 points.
Under is 6-1 last 7 games against a team with a winning percentage above .600%.
Key Injuries - C Theo Ratliff (knee) is doubtful.
Projected Score: 102 (SIDE of the Day)

Daily Sports Roundup: December 25
Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Cowboys and Cardinals meet in Arizona, college hoops takes the hardwood in Hawaii, and the Heat look for a win in Los Angeles.
Colliding on the gridiron . . .
The NFL offers up a Christmas Day contest this year, with Dallas at Arizona. The Cowboys (5-9 SU, 6-8 ATS) are coming off a 33-30 home win over the Redskins last time out, with Jon Kitna throwing for 305 yards with two touchdowns. Tashard Choice ran for 53 yards and a score for Dallas that day. The Cardinals (4-10 SU, 4-10 ATS) fell 19-12 in Carolina last week, as John Skelton was good for just 196 yards passing with no touchdowns and one interception. Larry Fitzgerald was Arizona's lone bright spot with nine catches for 125 yards in that loss. Oddsmakers have the Cowboys pegged as 7-point road favorites for Saturday's game, with the total for the matchup at 45.5 points.
Tipping off on the hardwood . . .
The NBA's Christmas Day marathon then has Chicago at New York (12pm ET), Boston at Orlando (2:30pm ET), Miami at the Lakers (5pm ET), Denver at Oklahoma City (8pm ET), and Portland at Golden State (10:30pm ET). The Lakers (21-8 SU, 14-15 ATS) got caught looking ahead to their Christmas matchup on Tuesday night when they fell 98-79 at home to Milwaukee. Kobe Bryant led the way with 21 points for the Lakers in that defeat, while Pau Gasol picked up 15 points and 11 rebounds. The Heat, who played in Phoenix on Thursday night, had their 12-game winning streak snapped at home by the Mavericks in a 98-96 loss on Monday night. The Heat and Lakers split their season-series last year in the pre-LeBron era, but Miami is 4-0 ATS over their last four meetings.
As well, college hoops offers up the final day of action at the Diamond Head Classic at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu on Christmas Day. Consolation games take place throughout the day Saturday, and the championship contest is scheduled for 9:30pm ET.

Saturday's List of 13: Looking at the rest of the bowl games......
13) TCU-Wisconsin— Frogs playing for all the non-AQ schools. Lets see Badgers hang a big number on a real defense, instead of Indiana or Minnesota. Seems weird that TCU is playing the Rose Bowl.
12) Ohio State-Arkansas-- Teams are a combined 23-2, but now focus will be on the five players who weren’t suspended for this game. At least coaches at Akron/Toledo are happy; they’ll be facing a freshman QB next September, not Pryor.
11) Maryland-East Carolina—So Vanderbilt got Ralph Friedgen fired; if Commodores hadn’t hired coach-in-waiting James Franklin, Friedgen would still be head coach of the Terps, since its fairly obvious they didn’t want Franklin to be coach.
10) Georgia-Central Florida—Pretty good pair of freshman QB’s here. Dawgs were 1-4 at one point, but rallied to get bowl eligible. O’Leary used to coach Georgia Tech, so he’s familiar with the Dawgs. Likely the last college game for Georgia’s star WR AJ Green.
9) Nebraska crushed Washington 56-21 in September. In Seattle. Not sure why this is an attractive bowl matchup, other than it is Jake Locker’s last college game, and he hasn’t had a stellar senior year.
8) South Carolina-Florida State—Spurrier’s best Gamecock squad vs. Jimbo Fisher’s first Seminole team. Watching Florida State still seems weird without Bobby Bowden there, dad-gum it.
7) UConn-Oklahoma—Teams are required to buy 17,500 over-priced tickets. Last I heard, Huskies had gotten rid of 4,500 of theirs, meaning they would’ve been better off financially going to the Poulan Weedeater Bowl. Seriously they would be........
6) NC State-West Virginia—Tom O’Brien doesn’t lose bowl games. West Virginia is giving Bill Stewart one more year, then they’re pushing him upstairs. Dude is 28-11 as coach of the Mountaineers. Hopefully, there are people in Morgantown upset by this.
5) Georgia Tech-Air Force—Over/under on total passes in this game is probably around 17.5. If Woody Hayes has cable in football heaven, he’ll tune in to watch this game.
4) Florida-Penn State—The 45-year old coach is retiring. The 83-year old coach will be back next year. Go figure.
3) Illinois-Baylor—Hope Baylor fixed its defense during the layoff.
2) Pitt-Kentucky—Pitt fired its coach, an alum. Kentucky suspended its QB after he got arrested, plus Coach Phillips is shaking up his coaching staff. Will Kentucky put its WR (former signal caller) back at QB and run Wildcat the whole game?
1) Oregon-Auburn— The only one of the 35 bowls with clear meaning. Should get huge TV ratings, which will make the nitwits happy. First team to 50 wins; that’ll make the fans happy.

Celtics at Magic: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Boston Celtics at Orlando Magic (-2, 191.5)
THE STORY: This game looked a lot more compelling a month ago when the Orlando Magic (17-12, 10-19 ATS) were keeping pace with the Boston Celtics (23-4, 15-11-1 ATS) at the top of the Eastern Conference.
Things took a step back for the Magic for a while there, but a host of new players contributed in an impressive victory over San Antonio on Thursday which snapped a four-game slide. Meanwhile, the Celtics just keep chugging along, shrugging off injuries to push their winning streak to an NBA season-high 14 games. Both of these teams believe they can make it out of the Eastern Conference this season. Only one of them can be right.
TV: Amway Center, 2:30 p.m. ET, ABC
ODDS: The Magic are set as 2-point home favorites while the total has moved from its opening post of 193.5 to 191.5
ABOUT THE MAGIC (17-12): Just when it looked like they were in the middle of a full-on free fall, the Magic went out and clobbered the team with the best record in the NBA, the San Antonio Spurs, 123-101 on Thursday. Dwight Howard was solid with 29 points and 14 rebounds and Orlando shot 59.5 percent from the floor while the new trio of Gilbert Arenas, Hedo Turkoglu and Jason Richardson combined for 40 points and 16 assists. Seven players finished in double figures.
ABOUT THE CELTICS (23-4): The 14-game winning streak is nice enough, but even more impressive considering that they have done it all without a complement of players. Rajon Rondo, the NBA leader in assists per game, has missed the last three with a sprained ankle and is expected to be out another week. But Boston just hands off the playmaking responsibilities to Paul Pierce, Ray Allen or Nate Robinson and just keeps going. They scratched out an 84-80 victory against Philadelphia on Wednesday, getting 22 points from Ray Allen.
WHO’S HOT/WHO’S NOT: Howard had a string of three straight games with 20 or more rebounds snapped on Thursday when he finished with “only” 14. Jameer Nelson was the lone starter to not reach double figures for the Magic, finishing with seven points. Paul Pierce struggled to 4-of-15 from the floor on Wednesday and did not have a point in the first half. Allen has scored at least 16 points in each of the last eight games.
KEY STATISTIC: 14 - as in Boston’s current win streak. They have won big and pulled games out late, won at home and on the road and have relied on different players every night.
SEASON SERIES: This will be the first meeting between the teams since last May when the Celtics beat the Magic in six games in the Eastern Conference Finals. Boston won two of three in Orlando, including the first two games of the series to take control. Pierce dominated the clinching game, going off for 31 points and 13 rebounds. These two played last Christmas as well, with the Celtics earning an 86-77 win.
KEY INJURIES: BOSTON: G Rajon Rondo (ankle); C Jermaine O’Neal (knee); C Kendrick Perkins (ACL); G Delonte West (wrist). ORLANDO: None.
LAST WORD: Shaquille O’Neal is healthy at the moment, giving the Celtics one player who might be able to slow Howard just a little bit and save them from having to waste a double team on the All-Star center. Kendrick Perkins handled that role in the playoffs last season but will be watching this one from the bench in street clothes.
BETTING TRENDS:
- Celtics are 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings in Orlando.
- Under is 11-3 in the last 14 meetings.
- Underdog is 8-3 ATS in the last 11 meetings.

Nuggets at Thunder: What bettors need to know
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Denver Nuggets at Oklahoma City Thunder (-6.5, 213)
THE STORY: A contest placed in primetime because of the presence of two of the NBA’s brightest stars will be without one of the luminaries when the Denver Nuggets visit the Oklahoma City Thunder on Christmas night.
Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony will miss the game after the death of his sister earlier this week. Anthony has traditionally played well against the Thunder with a career scoring average of 26.9 points. He is eighth in the NBA in scoring at 24 points per game.
Oklahoma City will have its leading man in forward Kevin Durant, the NBA’s leading scorer at 27.5 points per game. Durant has averaged 27.6 points in 11 career games against Denver.
ODDS: The Thunder opened as 6-point favorites but with news of Anthony's absence spreading, the line has moved to 6.5. The total is set at 213 points.
TV: Ford Center, 8:00 p.m. ET, ESPN.
ABOUT THE THUNDER (20-10, 15-15 ATS): Oklahoma City lost to the New York Knicks on Wednesday in a game that wasn’t as close as the 14-point margin of defeat might indicate. The Thunder trailed by as many as 22 points.
Oklahoma City trails Utah by one game in the Northwest Division as it opens a four-game homestand that includes Monday’s contest with the high-flying Dallas Mavericks.
Point guard Russell Westbrook has slowed down a bit recently, notching just two 20-point performances in his last six games. Westbrook is second on the Thunder with a 22.8 scoring average.
ABOUT THE NUGGETS (16-11, 9-16-2 ATS): Denver lost 109-103 to San Antonio on Wednesday, without the services of Anthony. Guard J.R. Smith was a bright spot with 22 points and seven rebounds in his first start of the season.
The contest also marked the season debut of forward Kenyon Martin, who had been out after knee surgery. Martin had eight points and five rebounds in 17 minutes.
Guard Chauncey Billups (wrist) also returned and had a solid 20-point, seven-assist performance. The 20-point performance was just Billups’ fifth of the season.
Denver is just 4-9 on the road this season, including a 1-4 mark in December.
WHO'S HOT/WHO’s NOT: Oklahoma City’s Durant always seems to be hot. He has 10 30-point games this season and has scored fewer than 20 just twice. Westbrook has made just 37 percent of his field-goal attempts over the last three games despite averaging 19 points. Denver guard Ty Lawson is shooting 56.5 percent in December with three 20-point games while filling in for Billups. Nuggets forward Al Harrington is 6-for-20 shooting over the past two games.
KEY STATISTIC: Oklahoma City is 8-2 in the 10 games in which Durant has scored 30 or more points this season. The losses were to Boston and Dallas, teams with the league’s second and third best records, respectively.
SEASON SERIES: First meeting of this season. Denver went 3-1 against the Thunder last season, splitting the two contests in Oklahoma City with the loss occurring when Anthony was sidelined with an ankle injury. The Nuggets also had a 29-point home win against the Thunder.
KEY INJURIES: DENVER: F Carmelo Anthony (personal); F Kenyon Martin (knee); G Chauncey Billups (wrist). OKLAHOMA CITY: C Nenad Krstic (back).
LAST WORD: Only three Oklahoma City players – Durant, Jeff Green and Nick Collison – have played on Christmas Day before and that was when the franchise was still in Seattle. Durant had 23 points during the 2007 contest, a loss to Portland.
BETTING TRENDS:
- Over is 10-3 in the last 13 meetings.
- Nuggets are 2-7 ATS in the last nine meetings.
- Nuggets are 1-4 ATS in the last five meetings in Oklahoma City.
