Bettors' best friend: Wednesday's wagering tips

    Weather to watch

As of Tuesday night, rain and 10 mph winds were expected for Wednesday’s Las Vegas Bowl between Utah and Boise State.

    Who’s hot

NBA: Toronto Raptors have covered in five straight against Detroit.

NBA: New York Knicks have covered in 14 of their last 18.

NBA: Houston Rockets have covered in eight of their last 11 meetings with the Clippers.

NHL: Pittsburgh Penguins have won eight of their last nine home games.

NHL: Tampa Bay Lightning have won four straight.

NHL: Vancouver Canucks have won four in a row.

    Who’s not

NCAAB: Florida Gators are 8-3 straight up but just 2-6 against the spread.

NBA: Denver Nuggets have dropped seven of their last nine against the spread.

NBA: New Orleans Hornets have covered in five of their last 20 games overall.

NBA: Cleveland Cavaliers have covered just once over their last 10 road games.

NHL: New York Islanders have dropped seven of their last eight.

    Key stat

10 – number of consecutive bowl wins the Utah Utes have recorded, an NCAA record. The Utes have also covered in seven of their last eight bowl games.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

John Cullen (arm), Utah Utes – While the Utes will be without Jordan Wynn as Terrance Cain fills in, they will also miss Cullen, their starting left tackle. Sophomore Sam Brenner is expected to start in his place.

    Game of the day

No. 19 Utah vs. No. 11 Boise State (-17, 60)

    Notable quotable

“I think some egos clashed, and no one was going to back down. It’s something we’ll use as motivation, to keep it to ourselves until we get onto the field. I’m kind of disappointed I got gypped out of half a massage.” – Boise State linebacker J.C. Percy on getting pulled out of a massage when some pushing and shoving broke out during the welcome reception for the Broncos and Utes on Sunday in Las Vegas.

    Notes and tips

Utah quarterback Terrance Cain threw two interceptions in two possessions the last time he was on the field against BYU. Cain was pulled after the second pick, but the Utes are expected to lean more on the running game to help the senior finish his college career on a better note.

Ben Gordon has overtaken Richard Hamilton as Detroit’s starting shooting guard. In four starts this season, Gordon averaged better than 20 points with four rebounds and three steals. Gordon is now Detroit’s No. 1 scoring option, while Hamilton, who has been cited as a distraction on the team, will come off the pine.

Suspended Mizzou starting point guard Michael Dixon has been reinstated in time to play in Wednesday's Braggin' Rights game against Illinois. Coach Mike Anderson confirmed the swirling rumors late Tuesday afternoon. Dixon had missed the club's last two games due to an unspecified violation of team rules.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New Jersey Nets at New Orleans Hornets (-9, 182)

New Orleans granted guard Willie Green a leave of absence to be with his family. Not to sound heartless, but isn’t that a bit redundant?

If you haven’t noticed the entire Hornets team has checked out. New Orleans is just 5-11 straight up and against the spread since opening the season on an 8-0 tear. Monday night was the latest setback with the Bugs falling to the hosting Pacers 94-93.

"We've always felt this roster was built for times like this,” Hornets coach Monty Williams told the New Orleans Times Picayune. “I'm saying stuff. Chris [Paul] is saying the tough stuff, but we need other guys to step up.''

The problem with the Hornets is that their wing players toss a ball in the ocean with the way they’re shooting the rock right now.

Trevor Ariza shot 1 for 13 against Indiana and finished the two-game road trip by making just 3 of 25 from the field. It’s no surprise the under is 15-2 in New Orleans’ last 17 ball games.

New Jersey doesn’t have many point producers on its roster either so expect another snorefest on Wednesday.

        Pick: Under

Oklahoma City Thunder at New York Knicks (pick, 218)

A three-game losing skid has sucked all the life out of the Knicks. Sure, New York gave the C’s all they could handle and Mike D’Antoni’s guys kept things close in the first half against the Heat but there’s no excusing their overtime loss to the Cavaliers.

It’ll be a challenge putting an end to the cold streak against the Thunder. Oklahoma City possesses athletic wing players and should match up well against the Knicks.

The key battle will be between Serge Ibaka and Amar’e Stoudemire. Ibaka has the speed and jumping ability to keep up with Stoudemire at the defensive end, but African native also has a tendency to get into foul trouble.

The Thunder will get abused down low if they have to put Nenad Krstic or Nick Collison on Stoudemire for long stretches of the game.

        Pick: Knicks

No. 22 Texas Longhorns at No. 12 Michigan St. Spartans (-5.5, 141)

The Spartans weren’t happy about the one-game suspension coach Tom Izzo served for violating NCAA rules after the school employed someone that was associated with a possible recruit. The Spartans took out their frustrations on the Prairie View A&M Panthers with a 91-50 beatdown on Saturday.

Izzo was pleased with the performance from the outside looking in, but will need to get right back at it Wednesday as the Spartans continue their tough non-conference schedule.

MSU hasn’t covered the last two times the club saw a pointspread, though Izzo doesn’t feel like any problems his team has had so far stem from a lack of talent.

"I think this will be arguably the best team we've brought in here in a few years," Izzo told reporters. "I think it's the most talented team that we might've played all year so far, as far as NBA basketball athlete talent."

The Spartans hope to have a healthy lineup against Texas after Korie Lucious aggravated an ankle injury and Keith Appling whacked his head in the first half of Saturday’s win and didn’t return.

Texas is coming off an impressive 78-76 win at North Carolina as a 3.5-point underdog, but will have its hands full against an inspired MSU club.

              Pick: Michigan State

No. 21 Illinois Fighting Illini at No. 10 Missouri Tigers (1.5, 148.5)

If Illinois was looking to build some momentum with a matchup against UIC ahead of Wednesday’s Braggin’ Rights game against the Tigers, so much for that.
The Illini dropped a 57-54 decision to the Illinois-Chicago Flames on Saturday, stunning coach Bruce Weber.

“You talk about a lump of coal for Christmas — we got that,” Weber told reporters. “We had an edge early in the season, but we’ve slipped a little. It looks like we have lost our sense of urgency.

“We had too many guys who didn’t play well Saturday.”

That much is for sure. The Illini were pegged as 16.5-point favorites in that game, which turned out to be the third consecutive game that they failed to cover the number.

After the latest loss Weber’s crew showed up to Sunday’s practice early and stayed late after to try to get past it, but it’s going to take more than a few extra minutes on the floor to make that much of a difference.

Mizzou reinstated suspended starting point guard Michael Dixon on Tuesday so he should be available, though coach Mike Anderson wouldn’t say if he would start.

This is going to be a grind-it-out battle.

              Pick: Under

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
                  --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Florida Panthers at Pittsburgh Penguins (-230, 5.5)

The Penguins are dangerous enough when it’s just Sidney Crosby rolling along on his 21-game point streak, but when Evgeni Malkin starts heating up, the rest of the league is in serious trouble.

Malkin looked like he was over a knee injury that kept him of a few games when he scored twice and added three assists in a 6-1 win over the Phoenix Coyotes on Monday, snapping the club’s two-game skid. Malkin now has five goals and is seeing some time on a line with Crosby when Dan Bylsma is really looking stack his top line.

"(Malkin's) game was going to another level," Bylsma told reporters after Monday’s game. "Even Sidney Crosby was shaking his head on the bench."
Malkin now has 13 goals and 30 points in 29 games, which is well off his scoring pace from last season when he tallied 28 points and 77 points in 67 contests.
Meanwhile, the Florida Panthers are also on a bit of an offensive outburst. Marty Reasoner scored twice in Florida’s 6-2 win over Buffalo on Friday before the Panthers shocked Philadelphia 5-0 on Monday.

                  Pick: Over

Vancouver Canucks at Detroit Red Wings (-145, 5.5)

You can see a lot of maturity in the Vancouver Canucks this season and Ryan Kesler is a good example of that.

When he broke into the league he wasn’t much more than an annoying pest on the ice that had some offensive upside, he’s now a threat to score on every shift. Now Kesler, who assisted in the birth of his second child on Sunday, sits first on the team with 97 shots and trails only the Sedin twins with 26 points in 31 games.

"He's just focused on playing the game with his heart, and putting everything on the line every shift," associate coach Rick Bowness said. "And not worrying about trying to distract people, getting verbal. Because most of that is a distraction for you, as well. You just put your focus on playing the game hard. Putting as much passion into the game."

That added depth makes everything easier for Vancouver. The Canucks have been much better on the road this year and have won their last four heading into Tuesday’s game at Joe Louis Arena and a major reason for their recent 9-1-1 run has been the club’s defensive play.

The Red Wings are heading in the other direction. They are looking to avoid their seventh loss in 10 games on Wednesday.

                  Pick: Canucks

                      Daily Sports Roundup: December 22

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: Bowl season continues at Sam Boyd Stadium, while the Canucks look for a win over the Wings, and the Celtics play host to the Sixers.

                      Colliding on the gridiron . . .

Ranked teams collide on the college football schedule for Wednesday when No. 20 Utah (10-2 SU, 7-4-1 ATS) takes on No. 10 Boise State (11-1 SU, 8-4 ATS) in the MAACO Bowl at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas. The Utes edged BYU 17-16 in their last game of the regular season, while the Broncos are coming off a 50-14 win over Utah State. Boise State beat Utah 36-3 when these teams last met in September 2006, and they're 17-point favorites for Wednesday (with the total for the contest at 60 points).

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up nine games on Wednesday, with Cleveland at Atlanta, Chicago at Washington, Detroit at Toronto, Oklahoma City at New York, New Jersey at New Orleans, Utah at Minnesota, Denver at San Antonio, Houston at the Clippers, and Philadelphia at Boston. The Celtics sit a 22-4 SU and 15-10-1 ATS thanks to their current 13-game winning streak; they topped the Pacers 99-88 at home in their last game on Sunday. The Celtics also beat the Sixers 102-101 in Philadelphia as a 5-point road favorite back on December 9. Ray Allen poured in a team-high 23 points for Boston in that day's victory, while Jodie Meeks led the way for the Sixers with 19 points.

There are two ranked matchups on the college basketball schedule for Wednesday, with No. 18 Texas at No. 12 Michigan State and No. 21 Illinois at No. 9 Missouri. As well, other games involving Top-10 teams on Wednesday include No. 8 Villanova at Monmouth, Drexel at No. 5 Syracuse, Harvard at No. 4 Connecticut, American at No. 6 Pittsburgh, IUPUI at No. 7 San Diego State (in Las Vegas), and No. 3 Kansas at California. The third-ranked Jayhawks (10-0 SU, 4-4 ATS) got past USC 70-68 last time out, with Josh Selby pouring in 21 points in the contest. The Golden Bears (6-4 SU, 4-6 ATS) are coming off a 51-41 win over Cal Poly, with Markhuri Sanders-Frison tossing in 15 points. Those two schools last met in December of 2009, with Kansas winning 84-69.

                      Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are just four games on the NHL's schedule for Wednesday, with Tampa Bay at the Islanders, Florida at Pittsburgh, Nashville at Chicago, and Vancouver at Detroit. The Red Wings fell to 20-8-4 on the season with a 4-3 road overtime loss to the Stars on Sunday. Pavel Datsyuk, Patrick Eaves, and Johan Franzen had the goals for the Red Wings in that loss, while Chris Osgood gave up four goals on 32 shots. The Red Wings also lost when they played the Canucks back on November 6, coming out on the wrong end of a 6-4 road decision. Manny Malhotra led the way with two goals for Vancouver in that victory, while Niklas Kronwall had two goals in the loss for the Wings.

                        ******************************************

Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

                        13) Stat of the day: Last eight QB’s who won the Heisman Trophy went 2-6 in their bowl game that year.

                        12) According to the recently concluded census, there are 308,745,538 people in this country, all of whom have NFL Network, except for me. Seriously, our population grew 9.7% over the last decade, the smallest 10-year increase in 80 years.

                        11) Dallas Cowboys averaged 20.1 ppg before Wade Phillips got fired; since then, they’re averaging 32.2. Problem is, the same guy was running the offense the whole time, interim coach Jason Garrett. Did he sabotage Wade? Probably not. Is he trying harder now that he’s trying to become the fulltime head coach? Could be.

                        10) Now that Rick Pitino is coaching Puerto Rico’s national team, John Calipari has gotten in on the act; looks like he will coach the Dominican Republic’s national team. Basketball is spreading worldwide, and a lot of prospects are popping up in central America, so these two millionaires are “volunteering” to coach in the summer. Go figure.

                        9) Houston Texans’ average starting field position in last three games: -18/-18/-16 yards. Hard to win that way. Also signals a roster that lacks quality depth, because you're getting killed on special teams.

                        8) Nitwits who want Tom Coughlin out as Giants’ coach are imbeciles; tell me who is available who is a better coach than Coughlin, and don’t say Bill Cowher, who is probably just as good but certainly not better, and he'd be a hell of a lot more expensive.

                        7) Milwaukee Brewers' starting pitchers had 4th-worst ERA in major leagues LY; now that they've added Marcum/Greinke, that shouldn't be the case in 2011. Brewers will be a fashionable choice to contend in '11.

                        6) But the Brewers also got SS Alcides Escobar, who ranked 147th out of 149 eligible players in OPS. Defense is most important for shortstops but still, you'd like someone with at least a little pop out there.

                        5) Found a sheet from when I was in Las Vegas this summer; Oregon was 20-1 to win the national title, Auburn was 75-1.

                        4) Vegas sportsbooks made a killing on games in Dallas-Foxboro this week, where QB changes caused action to become tilted to one team, but neither of those popular teams (Patriots/Cowboys) covered the spread.

                        3) TV ratings for Eagle-Giant game Sunday were highest for any FOX game in a non-doubleheader since 2003. If NFL has a work stoppage in 2011, they're idiots on both sides. Everyone's getting rich the way it is now-- don't screw it up.

                        2) There are 26 assistant coaches in college football making $400,000+ a year. Lot of big bucks at the highest levels.......

                        1) The average NFL game this season has an average of 44.3 points, the highest scoring season since 1965, when the average total was 46.1-- that was the season before the Super Bowl was started.
