  • One big UNDER NCAAB

I have made a nice profit scouting unders in minor college hoops, and tonight there is a total that jumps off the board at me.

Illinois-Chicago and Northern Illinois play a very different style of basketball. Northern Illinois wants to play fast, up-tempo ball, and Illinois-Chicago, under new coach Howard Moore, is being groomed to be a defensive team, who flies to the ball, and uses the clock on every possession to limit the opportunities of their opponent.

I believe this early, non-conference matchup against a run-and-gun opponent is one Moore is going to use to challenge his young team to utilize his offense, slowing down the game, and limiting No. Illini's offensive possessions.

In its last five games, the AVG total for Illinois-Chicago games is just 115.2.

In its last five games, the AVG total for Northern Illinois is 140.8 pts/game.

This perfectly illustrates the contrast in the two styles of play, but it should also be noted that No. Illinois' totals include putting up 86 points against Maryland Eastern-Shore, and 81 points on Cardinal Stricht, a school I have literally never heard of. They will not reach this total against the Illinois-Chicago defense.

If you take the average of the last five contests for each squad, it gives you a total of right around 127. This is the range I see this game falling, although I would lean toward the Under even on this number, as I think Illinois-Chicago will be successful in limiting possessions from No Illinois, even if they do give up some fast break points.

At 137, I think this total is a gift. If you believe this total is going OVER the number, you may as well parlay this with Northern Illinois, because it means that they fully dictated every aspect of this game. I don't think that will happen.

    Illinois-Chicago/Northern Illinois UNDER 137 large.

    Good luck all.

    Interesting synopsis...

Normally the running team has big advantages over a slow it down team. Transition game creates more points per possession than a half court set. Are you saying that you believe that not only will Illinois Chicago be able to swarm the ball in the half court that they are going to be able to slow down the number of transition attempts as well? Just want a clarification. Thanx T. I always check out your plays...

Thanks a lot, poskid. I'm always happy to discuss a play I'm excited about, and that's true tonight. I agree that a solid transition game can destroy an under, and if Illinois-Chicago was going up against a really solid offense, I'd stay away.

But I think this game (as the spread indicates) is fairly evenly matched, and while No Illini will definitely get their transition points, the key to what Moore wants to do (in the mold of Wisconsin and Southern Illinois) is limit the possessions.

Their last three games have been played against VERY similar opponents.

Valparaiso averages 73pts/game but managed just 68 against Ill-Chicago
Akron averages 68pts/game but managed just 54 against Ill-Chicago
Illinois State averages 64pts/game but managed just 53 against Ill-Chicago

I think this is important because it represents a trend of at least successfully limiting opponents' chances, and it's VERY interesting to note that they lost all three of these games. So, even when offenses have been successful enough to win the game against the Flames, they still have come up short of their usual offensive numbers.

I know for some this much analysis sucks the fun out of gambling, but a site like this helps keep me disciplined: if I can't make a compelling argument for several reasons that a game is solid, then I don't have a play. Can't win em all, but in college, I do consistently win.

I hope this helps, or at least makes sense, and good luck poskid.

No line at BetJam either. These small conference schools are a problem sometimes.
