    Daily Sports Roundup: December 14

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Volunteers play host to the Golden Grizzlies, while the Lakers visit Washington, and the Penguins take on their rivals in Philadelphia.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up seven games on Tuesday night, with Philadelphia at New Jersey, Toronto at Charlotte, Atlanta at Detroit, Sacramento at Houston, Orlando at Denver, Minnesota at Golden State, and the Lakers at Washington. The Lakers (17-7 SU, 10-14 ATS) picked up a 99-92 road win in New Jersey in their last game on Sunday, with Kobe Bryant scoring 32 points and Pau Gasol adding 15 points and 11 rebounds. The Wizards (6-16 SU, 9-13 ATS) have lost four games in a row, falling 101-95 at home to New York in their last game on Friday. Gilbert Arenas had a team-high 20 points for Washington that day. The Lakers won 115-108 at home against the Wizards as a 13-point favorite back on December 7, with Bryant leading the way with 32 points in the win.

As well, games involving ranked teams around college basketball on Tuesday are North Florida at No. 22 Texas, Drexel at No. 20 Louisville, and Oakland at No. 7 Tennessee. The Volunteers (7-0 SU, 4-2 ATS) stayed unbeaten on the season with an 83-76 win over Pittsburgh in their last game on Saturday. Scotty Hopson poured in 27 points for Tennessee in that contest. The Golden Grizzlies (5-5 SU, 3-0 ATS) fell 77-76 in a close game vs. Michigan State last time out, with Larry Wright scoring 21 points in that defeat.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are just two games on tap around the National Hockey League on Tuesday, with Toronto at Edmonton and Pittsburgh at Philadelphia. The 21-8-2 Penguins are riding a 12-game winning streak heading into Tuesday night, getting past the Sabres in Buffalo by a score of 5-2 in their last outing on Saturday. Dustin Jeffrey, Arron Asham, Alex Goligoski, Michael Rupp, and Matt Cooke all scored for the Pens in that win, while Marc-Andre Fleury made 34 saves. The 19-7-5 Flyers are coming off a 2-1 win in Boston on Saturday night, with Brian Boucher making 35 stops and Mike Richards scoring the OT winner. Philadelphia is up 2-1 on Pittsburgh so far this season.

Bettors' best friend: Tuesday's wagering tips

      Who’s hot

NBA: Philadelphia 76ers have covered in each of their last eight games.

NHL: Pittsburgh Penguins have won 12 straight games.

NCAAB: Louisville has won eight consecutive games and has covered in three of its last four.

NCAAB: Tennessee has covered in each of its last four.

      Who’s not

NBA: The Los Angeles Lakers have dropped nine of their last 10 against the spread.

NBA: Detroit Pistons have lost four out of five both straight up and against the number.

NBA: Denver Nuggets are 1-5 ATS in their last six.

      Key stat

28 minutes, 53 seconds – the amount of time the Pittsburgh Penguins have trailed during their 12-game winning streak, while allowing two or fewer goals in 11 of those 12 contests. The Penguins square off against the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Andrew Bynum (knee), Los Angeles Lakers – Bynum practiced Monday and is expected to make his season debut on Tuesday at Washington. The Lakers have been banged up all season up front with Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom both banged up, though Los Angeles will likely ease Bynum back into the lineup.

      Game of the day

      Orlando Magic at Denver Nuggets

      Notable quotable

"It always with me starts at the defensive end of the floor, and we're not committed at all right now. I don't see the interest really in trying to be a great defensive team. To me, that's where it starts." – Orlando Magic coach Stan Van Gundy on his club’s recent defensive problems. Orlando has dropped four of its last five, but did limit the Clippers to 85 points in Sunday’s win.

      Notes and tips

The Carmelo Anthony saga has taken another turn. After the Nuggets dropped a 129-125 decision to the New York Knicks, the three-time All Star reportedly told ESPN that he would only sign a three-year $65-million contract extension if he is traded to the Knicks.

Word has it that Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling has been chirping Baron Davis from his courtside seats. An unnamed source says Sterling has been heard saying “Why are you in the game?” and “You’re out of shape!” Davis declined comment about the situation, but says that he is trying to hard and can’t seem to get into the flow of the game.

Pittsburgh Penguins center Evgeni Malkin has missed four straight games with a knee injury but wants to play Tuesday against Philadelphia. Malkin, who has been inconsistent all year, expects to take the morning skate and go from there.

Tuesday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind........

        13) New York-area media can be cruel; Jets are 9-4, they play two poor games in row, and the term “free-falling frauds” finds its way into the newspaper today. What a town of frontrunners.

        12) So Cliff Lee takes $120M for five years from the Phillies, making the Red Sox a favorite in the AL East, and giving the Phillies the best staff in the big leagues, with a rotation of Halladay-Lee-Oswalt-Hamels. Hell, if Chuckles the Clown was their #5 starter, they'd still be favored to win the NL East for the foreseeable future.

        11) All this media speculation we get thrown at us is a huge waste; after we see Florida Gators hire Will Muschamp (no one had mentioned his name before he was hired), and now the Phillies come out of nowhere to sign Lee, how about reporters sit still until they have facts to report?

        10) One of the highlights of the winter now will be Bronx Bomber fans explaining how Cliff Lee sucks, and that they really wanted to re-sign Andy Pettitte all along anyway. Yeah, sure.

        9) They gave away 30,000 tickets for Vikings-Giants game at Ford Field Monday morning; they were gone in 90 minutes. Rest of tix went to Detroit season ticket holders.

        8) There is a meteorologist in Chicago named Amy Freeze. Just thought you’d like to know.

        7) Cavaliers are 0-7 (1-6 vs spread) since Lebron James returned to Ohio. Miami is 7-0 (6-0-1 vs spread) since that night.

        6) Antwaan Randle-El made a one-handed catch Sunday that might have been the greatest catch I’ve ever seen, when you consider how dismal the weather was. You’ll see it on SportsCenter all week. There was a gasp throughout the bar not only when he caught it, but during the replay.

        5) If you wagered on the Texans Monday night, that was a brutal beat, throwing a pick-6 in OT, after the comeback from down 28-10. Kubiak might get fired down there, but you get the impression that they're not far away from being a pretty good team. Schaub is a gritty QB.

        4) Auburn OC Gus Malzahn turned down Vanderbilt's offer to be their head coach and gets raise from Auburn- he's going to make $1.3M next year, just to call plays. He won't be as smart if Newton's in the NFL.

        3) Vikings close season in Detroit; if they can't fix the dome in time for Monday night's game with the Bears, they'll play that game in Detroit, too, so they could wind up playing three of their last four games there.

        2) Chris Berman insists on saying the 5-8 49ers “….are the best team in NFC West.” In his position, he shouldn’t root for teams. Its like he thinks his opinion matters more than the actual game results.

        1) Odd Stat of the Day: Pac-10 basketball teams are 1-15 this season in games where the spread is three or less points.
