Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New Orleans Hornets at Miami Heat (-10.5, 184.5)

The Miami Heat went on a bit of a run on their first extended road trip of the season, reeling off four straight wins while covering in all four. They closed out the successful trip by hammering Sacramento 104-83 as a 9-point favorite with Dwyane Wade scoring 36 points and LeBron James adding 25 and 10 rebounds.

Now they return home looking to take that momentum with them. For Miami, it’s all about defense - at least until they come up with the rock. The Heat has more than enough offensive weapons, but this club is only going to go as far as its commitment to defense allows. They held the Kings, Warriors and Bucks to 84 or fewer points during the trip and sit second in the league allowing only 91.3 points per game.

"I like to see the guys having fun defending and rebounding because they understand what comes after that," coach Erik Spoelstra said. "They're enjoying it, but more important, they are understand the correlation. You can't get out and run unless you get those stops.

"It is an easy way to try and win the game offensively and can be perceived as the fun way to do it. Our guys are buying into defending."

    Pick: Under

Milwaukee Bucks at Dallas Mavericks (-8.5, 186)

At some point, the Dallas Mavericks’ winning streak is going to come to an end. But you have to think they’ll be able to take care of a Milwaukee club that has lost five straight on the road and has covered only two of its last 13 games.

"I don't think the team really cares about the win streak," coach Rick Carlisle told the Mavericks' official website. "Our core guys that have been here a long time, they've been on streaks a lot longer than this. These guys won 17 in a row one year. That part of it isn't a novelty to our team. We're a veteran team and we're trying to become a great team."

And part of that process is avoiding letdowns that can spring up over the long season. The Mavericks blew a 25-point lead in the first half only to have Dirk Nowitzki and Jason Terry come up big down the stretch. The Mavs will be out to put that game behind them.

    Pick: Mavericks

College Funds: Today's best NCAAB bets
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

UC Davis at UCLA (-18, N/A)

UCLA managed to slip by Cal Poly to pull even at .500 on the year, but there is clearly work left to be done by the Bruins. They had an eight-point lead at the half but needed a couple of late treys from Jerime Anderson to put them ahead for good, snapping a four-game losing streak.

That didn’t do much good for Bruins bettors though, as the team dropped the cash as 11.5-point favorites. Joshua Smith lead the way with 19 points and 12 assists and the Bruins outrebounded the Mustangs 39-24.

"This man could be the beast of all beasts in the whole country," Bruins junior guard Anderson said of the 6-foot-10 Smith. "We just have to get it in his head."

Maybe that was the win the Bruins needed to get them going.

      Pick: UCLA

Cal Poly SLO at No. 15 San Diego St. (-26.5, N/A)

How good are the Aztecs right now? Leading scorer Kawhi Leonard didn’t score until SDSU already had a 48-30 lead over the University of San Diego on Saturday and the game was already 26 minutes old at that point.

San Diego St. still went on to a 77-49 win, covering the number as a 27-point favorite. The Aztecs will see a lot of chalk again on Monday, but this club has a real buzz about it right now and the players are embracing it.

"I knew things changed when I walked to the game and I saw somebody out with a sign saying, 'I need tickets,' " guard D.J. Gay said. "I knew that we were doing something special here, and we're just enjoying this ride."

Senior Malcom Thomas buried 20 points on Saturday and should be able to get his inside again on Monday. Brace yourself for another blowout.

      Pick: San Diego St.

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Atlanta Thrashers at Ottawa Senators (-120, 5.5)

It’s been a long stretch of inconsistent play from the Ottawa Senators. The club hasn’t won consecutive games in over a month and players on the team know they’ll have to start putting some win streaks together if they’re going to contend for a playoff spot.

The Sens narrowly edged the Devils on Friday and now aim to gain another two more points Monday against the Thrashers.

"We've got to win two-thirds of our games coming up here," Senators forward Jason Spezza told the Ottawa Sun. "We've got to be ready every night, especially facing teams ahead of us in the standings."

The squad has notched six goals in its last two contests - not a huge total but at least some of the team’s secondary scorers appear to be waking up. Mike Fisher netted a pair on Thursday and Milan Mchalek earned his sixth goal of the campaign the following night.

"Maybe we can get a little bit of confidence back with different guys scoring every night," said Spezza. "Milan scored a goal and you could see the look of relief in his face. The way he's been playing has been great.

"Different guys are feeling better about their game. It's just a confidence thing. When guys start playing better, then you're going to see more guys getting chances."

        Pick: Over

Chicago Blackhawks at Colorado Avalanche (N/A)

You had to figure it was only a matter of time before Chicago’s offense would start to sputter. The Blackhawks, who are missing Patrick Kane and Marian Hossa, managed to light the lamp just once Saturday against the Sharks in a 2-1 overtime loss.

"It's not fun to lose that one," Hawks captain Jonathan Toews told the Chicago Tribune after the game. "We did a lot of good things. Every single line, every defensive pairing brought something. We didn't give them much, especially their top players. We were smart and didn't take a lot of penalties and (did) all the little things."

Chicago will have to continue to play disciplined hockey as long as Kane and Hossa are missing from its lineup. Luckily for the Hawks, they’ve been getting solid work from Corey Crawford between the pipes.

"I thought (Crawford) played great," Chicago coach Joel Quenneville told reporters. "You could argue that might have been his best game. He was the reason why we got a point. He made two or three saves that looked like they were empty-netters out of nowhere. His anticipation was there and he was sharp and quick and big and definitely was a factor in us getting a point."

Look for Chicago to put the clamps on Colorado Monday night.

        Pick: Under

                  Guys,

I just received word of the passing away of my father.

I'm going to have trouble getting the stuff gathered and posted for a few days. I've got 2400 miles to travel and will have my hands full when I get there.

I'll do what I can but things may be very hit-and-miss until Sunday or Monday.

The Bowl Season thread is started. Dunkel, long sheet, short sheet and trend report are in there. I'll add the other stuff as I can.

There may be days I just won't be able to work the daily thread in. I don't know. I hope that's not the case! We'll have to see. I sure would hate that! This thread has been running for years without missing a day.
