    Daily Sports Roundup: December 13

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Ravens and Texans meet in Houston for Monday Night Football, while the Heat battle the Hornets, and the Kings play the Wings.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

The NFL's slate for Monday includes the re-scheduled Giants (-3) at Minnesota matchup, along with the regularly-scheduled Baltimore (-3) at Houston. The Ravens (8-4 SU, 5-6-1 ATS) will be looking to bounce back from a 13-10 home loss to the Steelers in which Joe Flacco completed just 17 of 33 pass attempts for 266 yards with one touchdown. Ray Rice was held to 32 yards on the ground in that contest. The Texans (5-7 SU, 4-7-1 ATS) were beaten 34-24 in Philadelphia last week, as Matt Schaub passed for 337 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Arian Foster ran for 83 yards and a score that day for Houston. The total for MNF this week is set at 46 points.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA has five games on tap for Monday, with Indiana at Chicago, Portland at Memphis, Milwaukee at Dallas, Golden State at Utah, and New Orleans at Miami. The Heat (17-8 SU, 12-13 ATS) have been on a roll, winning eight straight games heading into their Monday night contest with the Hornets. Miami last played on Saturday night in Sacramento, getting 36 points from Dwyane Wade in a 104-83 victory. LeBron James was good for 25 points for the Heat on that night. The Hornets beat the Heat in New Orleans back on November 5, winning 96-93 as a 6.5-point underdog. Wade was good for 28 points for Miami that day, while Emeka Okafor scored 26 points for New Orleans.

As well, there is just one game involving a ranked team on the college basketball schedule for Monday, with Cal Poly at No. 14 San Diego State. The Mustangs (3-5 SU, 2-3 ATS) were beaten by UCLA 72-61 last game, as David Hanson tossed in 18 points for Cal Poly. The Aztecs (10-0 SU, 7-1 ATS) are coming off a 77-49 win over San Diego in which Malcolm Thomas poured in 20 points. D.J. Gay scored 16 points in that victory.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are six games on the ice around the NHL on Monday, with Atlanta at Ottawa, the Islanders at Nashville, Columbus at Calgary, Chicago at Colorado, Dallas at San Jose, and Los Angeles at Detroit. The 16-10-1 Kings were beaten 3-2 at home in overtime by the Wild in their last game on Saturday night; Dustin Brown and Ryan Smyth both scored for Los Angeles in that defeat, while Jonathan Quick made 18 saves. The 19-6-3 Red Wings cruised to a 4-1 win in New Jersey in their last game on Saturday, with Tomas Holmstrom, Danny Cleary, Henrik Zetterberg, and Pavel Datsyuk providing the markers that night. Chris Osgood stopped 33 of the 34 New Jersey shots.

Bettors' best friend: Monday's wagering tips

      Who’s hot

NBA: Miami Heat have covered in seven straight games.

NBA: Portland Trailblazers have won and covered in four consecutive games.

NBA: Chicago Bulls have won five straight, covering three times.

NBA: Dallas Mavericks have won 12 in a row, covering in nine of those games.

NHL: Dallas Stars have won 11 of their last 16 trips to San Jose.

      Who’s not

NHL: New York Islanders have lost 19 of their last 20 games.

NHL: Calgary Flames have lost three of four.

NBA: Golden State Warriors have lost six straight, covering twice over that span.

NBA: Utah Jazz have dropped four of their last five against the number.

      Key stat

8 – The number of consecutive games the Miami Heat have won by double-digits, covering in seven of those games. However, Miami faces New Orleans on Monday, which has covered in each of its last four games against the Heat.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Brett Favre (shoulder), Minnesota Vikings - USA Today's Jon Saraceno reports that Favre texted him to say that he “doubts” he will be able to play Monday night against the New York Giants, which would end Favre’s 297 consecutive game streak.

      Game of the day

Baltimore Ravens at Houston Texans (3, 46)

      Notable quotable

"I think this is officially the craziest season ever; now the roof collapses at the Metrodome. Can’t wait to see what happens now. Let’s make it even crazier and just take the roof off and play outside." Vikings defensive end Brian Robison via twitter.

      Notes and tips

The Minnesota Vikings will play the New York Giants Monday night at Ford Field in Detroit. Excessive snowfall in Minnesota caused the Metrodome’s roof to collapse Saturday night. The Giants were forced to spend the night in Kansas City after snowfall canceled their flight to Minnesota and it is unclear whether they’ll be able to practice again before Monday’s game.

Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry may not be out as long as the team thought with his sprained ankle. Coach Keith Smart told the press he was worried Curry would be out "a while," but Curry is already walking around without too much discomfort. He's a longshot for Monday's game, but don't rule out an early return.

Calgary Flames forward Rene Bourque missed Sunday’s practice due to illness. His status for Monday’s game against Columbus is uncertain. Bourque sits third in team scoring with 22 points in 28 games and is tied with Jarome Iginla with 12 goals.

        Monday's six-pack

-- Miami Hurricanes hired Temple coach Al Golden, who performed a masterful job of making the Owls' football program relevant again.

-- Knicks beat the Nuggets, have now won 8 games in a row for first time in sixteen years. Bandwagon should be filling up pretty soon, as Celtics and Heat visit Manhattan this week.

-- Some wiseguy said Sunday night that Cliff Lee isn't signing as a free agent until the Jets score a touchdown. He might be waiting a while.

-- Cavaliers haven't won a game since Lebron James' return to Ohio.

-- NC-Wilmington won by 12 at Wake Forest; going to be rough year for Jeff Bzdelik in Winston-Salem.

-- NFL twinbill Monday night: Giants-Vikings at Ford Field, 80 or so minutes before Ravens-Texans. DirecTV has the Giant game. FOX is also televising the game here in Albany, good news for my dad.

        *******************************************

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday...........

        13) Giants-Vikings was moved to Detroit at 7:20 Monday night, making it a short work week for the Giants before their big game with the Eagles next Sunday. First Monday night game in Detroit in ten years.

        12) Steelers didn't score an offensive TD, but defense chipped in with a couple of touchdowns as they beat Cincinnati yet again, 23-7. Am I the only person who thinks Carson Palmer is ridiculously overrated?

        11) Has any 9-4 NFL team ever failed to score a TD in all four losses? Ladies and gentlemen, the 2010 New Jersey Jets.

        10) Miami punter Brandon Fields booted ten kicks for a 56.4 average, the single highest one-game average in the last 40 years. In a 10-6 game, that makes Mr Fields your game MVP, doesn't it?

        9) Miami won despite getting only six first downs- they completed only five of 19 passes. Fish are 6-1 on road, 1-5 at home. Go figure.

        8) Saints dominated the Rams on 3rd down, converting 11 of 16 while the Rams were 1-11. Winning 21 of 27 third down plays wins you a lot of games. Chargers did same thing, converting 11-15 while Chiefs were just 0-11- they won 22 of 26 third down plays.

        7) Unfortunately, Brodie Croyle is now 0-10 as an NFL starter. Hard to believe an NFL team has such horrendous backup QBs.

        6) John Skelton was just 15-38 passing in a dome in his first NFL start, but he'll always remember the Cardinals' 43-13 win over a Denver team that is already looking ahead to next summer's work stoppage. At one point, there were 13 consecutive incomplete passes in a sloppy game.

        5) Seattle is still tied for first place in NFC West; has a first place team ever lost seven games by 15+ points?

        4) Buccaneers have won five games by 3 or less points. If Lou Gehrig came back and played football, he'd be wearing pewter pants.

        3) Whomever the new boss of the Panthers is will have a very enormous decision to make; is Jimmy Clausen their QB of the future, or will they draft Cam Newton or Andrew Luck or Ryan Mallett as their future? If it was my decision, I'd try to trade Clausen for a draft pick.

        2) FOX's camera showing the snow breaking thru the Metrodome roof was superior television. Every time they showed it, I still watched.

        1) Because I love conspiracy theories, I'll bet someone a dollar that next year's NFL schedule has a Monday night game for the Lions, to thank them for helping out with tonight's Giant-Viking rescheduling.
