Ohio State favored by 28 over WCU

      WESTERN CAROLINA CATAMOUNTS (4-7)

      at OHIO STATE BUCKEYES (7-0)

      Tip-off: Sunday, 2:00 p.m. EDT
      Line: Ohio State -28

Western Carolina desperately needs a win after losing three straight and five of its last seven games. The Catamounts probably won't get it on Sunday as they play at undefeated and No. 2-ranked Ohio State.

At 7-0, Ohio State is off to its third-best start under head coach Thad Matta. His 2005-06 team started 11-0 and his 2008-09 team was 9-0.

The Buckeyes have won all seven of their games by double-digits this season and are coming off a 75-64 victory over IUPUI on Thursday, which was closer than it seemed after OSU rallied from a nine-point second-half deficit. OSU is 1-3 ATS when favored by 10-plus points this season.

Jared Sullinger (18.1 PPG, 9.9 RPG, 61% FG) set a freshman school record with 40 points against the Jaguars. He hit 12-of-17 field goals and made 16-of-23 free throws -- both of which were also records -- and had 13 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season.

David Lighty ranks second on the team in scoring (13.4 PPG, 4.9 RPG, 3.6 APG, 2.1 SPG), but was limited to only six points against IUPUI on 3-of-7 shooting. William Buford (11.5 PPG, 5.0 RPG), Jon Diebler (11.4 PPG) and Deshaun Thomas (11.4 PPG, 4.7 RPG) are the other Buckeyes who are scoring in double-figures.

Western Carolina relies heavily on its senior guard Mike Williams (16.3 PPG, 4.1 RPG, 3.7 APG, 2.2 SPG), but he was held to just two points and 1-of-7 shooting on Friday in a 73-50 loss to Campbell. Williams is the lone player who scores in double figures for the Catamounts. Richie Gordon averages 8.8 PPG and 5.4 RPG.

Ohio State and Western Carolina have never played each other, but this game doesn't figure to be a nice introductory meeting for the Catamounts. These two FoxSheets trends expect Ohio State to win and cover the hefty spread:

OHIO ST is 29-13 ATS (69.0%, +14.7 Units) off a home no-cover where the team won straight up as a favorite since 1997. The average score was OHIO ST 70.6, OPPONENT 58.1 - (Rating = 1*).

Larry Hunter is 8-20 ATS (-14.0 Units) in road games after failing to cover 2 of their last 3 against the spread as the coach of W CAROLINA. The average score was W CAROLINA 64.9, OPPONENT 73.7 - (Rating = 2*).

Anthony game-time decision vs. streaking Knicks

        DENVER NUGGETS (14-8)

        at NEW YORK KNICKS (15-9)

        Tip-off: Sunday, 12:00 p.m. EDT
        Line: TBD

Denver hopes to have Carmelo Anthony in the lineup when it makes its only visit of the season to New York on Sunday afternoon. Anthony (22.8 PPG, 8 RPG, 3.0 APG) has missed the last two games with a sore right knee, and his playing status against the Knicks will be determined right before the Noon tip-off. The Nuggets will need Anthony to be at full strength to combat the red-hot Knicks, who have won seven straight games and are 15-9 on the season.

Denver beat the Knicks, 120-118, on Nov. 16 in Denver. That game dropped New York to 3-8, but it has since rebounded with 12 wins in its past 13 games.

Amar’e Stoudemire (26.1 PPG, 9.1 RPG, 1.9 BPG, 53% FG) has been the key cog in the Knicks' recent play. He's tied a franchise record with at least 30 points in seven straight games, which includes five double-doubles during that stretch. In Friday's 101-95 win over Washington, he finished with 36 points and 10 boards.

Stoudemire scored 24 points when the two teams met in mid-November, while Danilo Gallinari (15.3 PPG, 4.7 RPG) and Landry Fields (10.3 PPG) each had 21. Raymond Felton (18.3 PPG, 8.4 APG, 2.1 SPG) added 19 points and 12 assists.

Anthony led the Nuggets with 26 points in the first meeting, and Al Harrington (12.7 PPG, 5.7 RPG) had 22 points. With Anthony out of the lineup on Friday against Toronto, Harrington scored a season-high 31 points in the Nuggets' 123-116 victory over the Raptors.

The Knicks are a mediocre 5-5 SU (4-5-1 ATS) at home this season, compared to a stellar 10-4 SU (12-2 ATS) on the road. The Nuggets are 4-7 SU (5-6 ATS) away from Denver, and with Anthony being less than 100 percent, the Knicks should extend their winning streak to eight on Sunday.

This FoxSheets trend backs up the New York pick:

Play Against - Road underdogs (DENVER) - after failing to cover 4 of their last 5 against the spread, good team, winning 60-75% or more of their games on the season. (54-25 over the last 5 seasons.) (68.4%, +26.5 units. Rating = 2*).

Villanova goes for 8th straight series win vs. La Salle

          VILLANOVA WILDCATS (7-1)

          at LA SALLE EXPLORERS (6-3)

          Tip-off: Sunday, 2:00 p.m. EDT
          Line: Villanova -10

Villanova tries to extend its winning streak over “Big 5” rival La Salle to nine games when the two teams meet on Sunday afternoon in Philadelphia.

The Wildcats have only one loss this season. That came against Tennessee, 78-68, in the championship game of the NIT Season Tip-Off at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 26.

Corey Stokes (16.0 PPG, 4.1 RPG) scored a career-high 34 points in the Wildcats' 65-53 victory over Pennsylvania on Wednesday. He finished 5-for-9 from three-point range and has scored in double-figures in six straight games, averaging 18.2 PPG over this span.

But he's struggled against La Salle in his career, averaging 9.0 PPG and 40% FG in three games. He made 2-of-8 shots for nine points in last season's contest, an 81-63 Villanova win.

Villanova's Corey Fisher (14.1 PPG, 4.4 APG, 3.0 RPG and 1.9 SPG) sat out the first two minutes and 15 seconds against Penn on Wednesday for disciplinary reasons. He had only four points on 1-of-6 shooting.

The Explorers have lost three games on the season, including two to ranked teams -- Baylor (74-64) and Missouri (83-71). Their third loss came against 9-1 Oklahoma State in double overtime, 92-87, on Dec. 4.

Aaric Murray leads the team in scoring (16.6 PPG) and rebounding (8.9 RPG) as he has already posted three games with 20 points and 10 boards. Ruben Guillandeaux (15.9 PPG, 3.1 APG, 3.1 RPG) scored 21 points in an 84-81 victory at Boston University on Thursday. He didn't see action in last season's meeting with Villanova because of a stress fracture in his right foot. When he has played against the Wildcats, he hasn't performed well. In three losses, he's hit only 1-of-16 shots from the field for a total of seven points.

La Salle got double-doubles from Murray (15 points and 14 rebounds) and Jerrell Williams (15 points, 16 rebounds) in last season's loss to Villanova, and it also dominated the boards (46-27).

But the Explorers couldn't hang on to the ball, as the Wildcats scored 29 points off 27 La Salle turnovers, including a career-high six steals from Fisher, who also added 13 points.

Villanova coach Jay Wright's first loss as the Wildcats coach came against La Salle, 61-58, in overtime on Nov. 27, 2001. However, since that game, he's led Villanova to eight straight wins in the series. Prior to his arrival, the two Philly “Big 5” rivals split 50 meetings. Expect the Wildcats to beat La Salle again on Sunday afternoon.

These three highly-rated FoxSheets trends like Villanova to win and cover the spread:

Jay Wright is 14-2 ATS (+11.8 Units) after 2 straight games where they were called for 15 or less fouls as the coach of VILLANOVA. The average score was VILLANOVA 77.1, OPPONENT 64.1 - (Rating = 4*).

Play On - Road favorites of 10 to 19.5 points (VILLANOVA) - good defensive team - allowing <=64 points/game on the season, after allowing 25 points or less in the first half last game.(129-70 since 1997.) (64.8%, +52 units. Rating = 3*).

LA SALLE is 1-10 ATS (-10.0 Units) in all home games over the last 2 seasons. The average score was LA SALLE 75.6, OPPONENT 73.5 - (Rating = 3*).

Blazers look to beat Spurs for 6th straight time

            PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS (12-11)

            at SAN ANTONIO SPURS (19-3)

            Tip-off: Sunday, 3:30 p.m. EDT
Line: San Antonio -8, Total: 194.5

Portland hopes to continue its recent winning streak against San Antonio when the two teams meet on Sunday.

The Trail Blazers have won five consecutive games (SU and ATS) against the Spurs, including two straight at the AT&T Center. Prior to this stretch, San Antonio had owned Portland by winning 20 of 22 games from Feb. 11, 2003 through Feb. 25, 2009.

During its current four-game winning streak, the Trail Blazers have held their opponents (Clippers, Phoenix twice and Orlando) to 91.8 PPG and 31.2% from 3-point range. Portland will get a huge test from the Spurs, who are among the NBA's best offenses with 107.0 PPG, including 41.0% from beyond the arc.

Richard Jefferson (14.7 PPG, 4.0 RPG, 45.7% 3-pt FG) had 18 points and hit a season-high five 3-pointers in San Antonio's 108-92 victory over Atlanta on Friday. In his last five games, he's nailed 15-of-28 from long range. Jefferson is one of five players who average between 11.6 PPG and 20.0 PPG for the balanced Spurs. Manu Ginobili leads the team in scoring (20.0 PPG, 4.9 APG), while Tony Parker is second with 17.0 PPG and 7.0 APG.

Meanwhile, Tim Duncan (13.6 PPG, 9.0 RPG, 1.8 BPG) is averaging 17.4 points and 11.2 boards in 23 home games versus Portland. His battle with Portland's LaMarcus Aldridge (17.7 PPG, 8.0 RPG) will be one to watch. Aldridge averaged 19.3 PPG with 8.7 RPG as the Trail Blazers swept the Spurs last season for the first time since 1996-97.

Brandon Roy leads Portland with 18.1 PPG. He had been in a shooting slump (29-of-80 in six games) prior to breaking out in Friday's 101-94 win over Phoenix with 10-of-19 shooting and 26 points.

And since returning to the starting lineup seven games ago, Wesley Matthews (14.7 PPG) has been a spark plug for the Blazers, as he's averaging 20.0 PPG and shooting 45.7% (16-of-35) from 3-point range.

The Spurs are 11-2 (8-5 ATS) at home this season, while Portland is 5-8 (4-6-3 ATS) on the road. Both teams carry four-game winning streaks into the game, but expect San Antonio to leave with the victory.

This FoxSheets trend likes San Antonio to snap its five-game losing skid in the series:

Play Against - Any team (PORTLAND) - off 2 or more consecutive upset wins as an underdog against opponent after 2 consecutive covers as a favorite. (36-12 since 1996.) (75%, +22.8 units. Rating = 3*).
