Celtics travel to Charlotte looking for 10th straight win

        BOSTON CELTICS (18-4)

        at CHARLOTTE BOBCATS (8-14)

        Tip-off: Saturday, 7:00 p.m. EDT
        Line: Boston –7.5, Total: 188

The defending Eastern Conference champs travel to Charlotte on Saturday to face the Bobcats.

The Celtics enter winners of nine straight, with four of those wins coming on the road. On the season, Boston is 8-3 ATS on the road, but failed to cover in a one-point win at Philadelphia on Thursday. Ray Allen has hit the fountain of youth in his past two games, averaging 25.5 PPG while shooting 67% from the field and 5-for-8 from behind the arc. The Celtics are shooting an amazing 52.6% FG during their nine-game win streak.

The Bobcats have lost five of their past eight games, shooting just 43.6% from the field. They average just 95.0 PPG on the season, which is tied for 24th in the NBA. Perhaps Charlotte’s biggest problem this season has been holding on to the ball. Only the Timberwolves average more turnovers per game than the Bobcats’ 16.9.

Boston has won its past three games against the Bobcats by an average of 25 PPG, covering in each game. I like Boston minus the 7½ points in this one.

        The FoxSheets says:

Doc Rivers is 60-29 ATS (67.4%, +28.1 Units) in a road game where the total is between 180 and 189.5 points as the coach of BOSTON. The average score was BOSTON 94.5, OPPONENT 92.9 - (Rating = 2*).

Also, I like Over in this game. The FoxSheets advise to:

        Play Over - Any team (BOSTON) - after 8 or more consecutive wins, a top-level team (>=75%) playing a team with a losing record. (74-33 since 1996.) (69.2%, +37.7 units. Rating = 3*).

Also, Doc Rivers is 13-1 OVER (+11.9 Units) off a road no-cover where the team won straight up as a favorite as the coach of BOSTON. The average score was BOSTON 105.7, OPPONENT 97.8 - (Rating = 3*).

Heat look for 8th straight win on Saturday

          MIAMI HEAT (16-8)

          at SACRAMENTO KINGS (5-15)

          Tip-off: Saturday, 10:00 p.m. EDT
          Line: Miami -8 Total: 195.5

Those Miami Heat fans who fed themselves to the alligators in the Everglades when the Heat were 9-8 and losers of four of five, perhaps overreacted. Since losing to Dallas on November 27, the Heat have won seven straight and are now the talk of the NBA in a good way.

Miami has not only turned its overall season around in winning seven straight, but they have been excellent ATS. After starting the season 4-1 straight up and ATS, the Heat went 1-12 ATS over their next 13 games. However, the Heat are 6-0 ATS since then. A major reason for Miami’s success of late has been its improved shooting and defense. The Heat have shot 50.7% during their seven-game win streak, while holding their opponents to under 40 percent (39.5%). LeBron James has really improved shooting the ball, connecting on 54.5 percent of his shots in his past seven games compared to just 43.6% during the team’s 9-8 start.

The Kings haven’t done much right since starting the season 3-1. They enter Saturday night losers of 14 of their last 16 games. They are just 4-12 ATS over those same 16 games. Sacramento really struggled shooting the ball this season, as only four teams have shot worse than its 43.7% from the field. Sacramento also ranks 27th in the league in three-point FG Pct. shooting just 32.1% for the season. After struggling through most of the season, center Jason Thompson recorded season-highs in scoring and rebounding during the Kings’ 116-91 win over the Wizards on Wednesday. Thompson finished with 22 points and 14 rebounds for just his second double-double on the year.

The Heat should have their way against the Kings who enter with a 47.3 opponents FG Pct. They have had excellent success ATS against the Kings going 22-4 since 1996. I like Miami to win its seventh straight ATS and their eighth straight overall on Saturday night.

The FoxSheets agree to ride the sizzling Heat:

Play On - Favorites of 10 or more points (MIAMI) - after beating the spread by 30 or more points total in their last five games against opponent after going under the total by 48 or more points total in their last 10 games. (28-7 since 1996.) (80%, +20.3 units. Rating = 3*).

Gonzaga big underdogs at Notre Dame Saturday

            GONZAGA BULLDOGS (4-4)

at NOTRE DAME FIGHTING IRISH (8-1)

            Tip-off: Saturday, 8:30 p.m. EDT
Line: Notre Dame -8.5, Total: 142

A tough non-conference schedule is one of the main reasons why Gonzaga (4-4) is off to its worst start in 12 seasons under coach Mark Few. The Zags resume their difficult slate when they visit one-loss Notre Dame on Saturday night.

The Irish are coming off their first setback of the season, a 72-58 defeat to Kentucky on Wednesday in the SEC/Big East Invitational. Notre Dame averaged 81.8 points and shot 45.3% overall in winning its first eight games against inferior competition. But against the 17th-ranked Wildcats, the Irish shot a terrible 36.4% FG, including 20.0% in the second half. Notre Dame didn't have a field goal for over 12 minutes against Kentucky, which allowed UK to turn an 11-point deficit into a seven-point lead.

Ben Hansbrough (16.3 PPG, 3.8 APG, 3.4 RPG) led the Irish with 21 points (his fourth game with at least 20 points this season), but was limited to only two second-half points. He's one of four Notre Dame players averaging double figures in points this season. Tim Abromaitis (14.3 PPG, 7.0 RPG), Tyrone Nash (12.0 PPG, 6.4 RPG, 3.0 APG) and Carleton Scott (10.9 PPG, 7.8 RPG) are the others. But those three players struggled in the loss to Kentucky, combining for 22 points and shooting only 8-of-25 from the floor.

The Zags are coming off an 81-59 loss to Washington State on Wednesday night. Gonzaga's defense was nonexistent, allowing the Cougars to shoot 50% overall and 52.4% from the three-point line (11-for-21).

Three of the Zags' four losses have come against ranked teams (San Diego State, 79-76; Kansas State, 81-64; Illinois, 73-61). And the Wildcats and Illini each hit 12 three-pointers. With Hansbrough nailing 55% (28-for-51) of his threes, Gonzaga could be in for another night of watching its opponent rain buckets from behind the arc.

Steven Gray leads Gonzaga in scoring with 18.4 PPG, but was limited to seven points on 2-of-10 shooting against Washington State, marking the first time this season he has not hit double-figures in points.

He also averages 5.4 APG, 4.4 RPG and 2.1 SPG. But Gray has had a problem with turnovers at times this season. He's already had three games -- Washington State, Kansas State and San Diego State -- where he's turned it over six times.

Robert Sacre is the only other Bulldog who is scoring in double figures. He averages 11.4 PPG and a team-best 7.5 RPG.

This marks the first meeting between Notre Dame and Gonzaga. Both teams are trying to overcome losses, but the Bulldogs were more able to put defeats behind them last season, going 6-0 SU (4-0 ATS) following a straight-up loss. Notre Dame was 6-5 SU (5-5-1) following an SU setback last season. The FoxSheets also back Gonzaga to at least cover on Saturday:

            Play Against - Any team (NOTRE DAME) - average 3PT shooting team (32-36.5%) against a poor 3PT defense (>=36.5%), in a game involving two dominant rebounding teams (>=+6 reb/game). (64-29 since 1997.) (68.8%, +32.1 units. Rating = 3*).

Jazz try to end Mavericks win streak at 11

              UTAH JAZZ (17-7)

              at DALLAS MAVERICKS (18-4)

              Tip-off: Saturday, 8:30 p.m. EDT
              Line: Dallas -5, Total: 194.5

The hottest team in the NBA hosts the Utah Jazz on Saturday night as Deron Williams and company travel to Dallas to face the Mavericks.

Dallas has won 11 straight since starting the season 7-4. While Dallas struggled ATS at home to start the season, it has picked up the pace during this streak. After starting the season 1-5-2 ATS at home, the Mavs have gone 4-1 ATS over their past five games at American Airlines Center. The Mavericks have put the clamps down on their opponents during this 11-game win streak, holding opponents to just 43.3 percent shooting while allowing only 92.6 PPG. Dirk Nowitzki has been excellent over his last 10 games, averaging 25.1 PPG while shooting 60.1 percent from the field. Nowitzki is shooting 56.0% FG on the year, which is a huge improvement from his 47.2% career FG Pct. entering this season.

The Jazz enter Saturday leading the Northwest Division by one game over the Oklahoma City Thunder. They have been one of the best ATS teams in the league all season, going 15-9 overall and 7-2 on the road. Deron Williams is averaging 24.3 PPG while shooting 54.7 percent from the field over his past nine games.

The Jazz have won six straight ATS on the road and despite the Mavs recent hot streak, I’m taking Utah getting five points.

This four-star FoxSheets trend also sides with the Jazz:

UTAH is 26-6 ATS (81.3%, +19.4 Units) after 2 straight games with 10 or less offensive rebounds over the last 2 seasons. The average score was UTAH 104.8, OPPONENT 96.6 - (Rating = 4*).

Boston Bruins host Flyers on NHL odds slate

One of the most heated rivalries in the Eastern Conference continues Saturday when the Philadelphia Flyers travel to Boston for a matchup against the Bruins. The Flyers eliminated the Bruins from last season’s playoffs after losing the first three games of the best-of-seven series.

The two squads have already met once this season (Dec.1), with the Bruins registering a 3-0 victory as 120 road underdogs. The combined three goals dipped ‘under’ the 5 ½-goal closing total.

The Flyers lost the Dec. 1 game despite out-shooting the Bruins, 41-32. However, Boston netminder Tim Thomas stopped all 41 shots to register the shutout and give the Bruins some revenge from being eliminated by the Flyers in last season’s dramatic playoff series.

Philadelphia failed to score on four power play opportunities, while Boston was 1-for-2 with the man advantage. Patrice Bergeron and Tyler Seguin scored first-period goals for the Bruins, and Milan Lucic completed the scoring with just 1:48 seconds remaining in the third period.

The Flyers are off Thursday’s 4-1 victory at Toronto as 125 road favorites. The win lifted Philadelphia’s overall ledger to 18-7-2-3 and its road record to 8-2-2-1.

The combined five goals slithered below the NHL odds, leaving the ‘under’ 17-13 in Philadelphia’s first 30 outings and 10-3 in its last 13 road encounters.

After starting four straight games – and six of the last seven – Flyers goalie Sergei Bobrovsky was given a rest Thursday night against Toronto and replaced with Brian Boucher.

Boucher has quietly been effective in a backup role, posting a 2.57 goals-against average and a .901 save percentage in eight games before Thursday. Bobrovsky, who has lost his last four starting assignments against teams with a winning record, figures to return to the lineup Saturday. He is 14-4-1-2 with a 2.29 GAA and .922 save percentage.

The Flyers have scored three goals or more in each of their last four games and are now ranked second in the league offensively by averaging 3.4 goals per game. They also rank second by averaging 33.2 shots on goal per contest. Philadelphia allows just 2.4 goals per game, which is the league’s fifth best mark.

Milan Lucic scored two goals and Tuukka Rask made 33 saves to lift the Bruins to a 5-2 victory over the lowly Islanders as huge 250 home favorites Thursday night. Boston lifted its home ledger to 7-5-0-2, which is not as good as its 9-3-0-1 road record.

Though the combined seven goals skipped ‘over’ the five-goal closing total, the ‘under’ is still 16-7-4 in Boston’s first 27 encounters and 9-4 in its first 13 home contests.

Lucic leads Boston with 15 goals, easily topping last season's total of nine. Rask won for only the second time this season (2-6-1). Boston is now 4-0-1 in its last games.

Rask doesn’t figure to be between the pipes in Saturday’s game against the Flyers. That honor should go to No.1 goalie Tim Thomas, who is a sizzling 14-2-2 in his first 18 starts.

Thomas leads the league in three goaltending categories. The 36-year-old Michigan native has a 1.49 GAA, a .955 save percentage and five shutouts.

The superior netminding has helped the Bruins lead the league in defense, allowing an average of 1.9 goals per game. They are 11th offensively, averaging 3.0 goals per contest.

Boston hits the road next Wednesday and Thursday for back-to-back games against the Sabres and Canadiens, respectively. Philadelphia returns home next Tuesday for a matchup against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Gonzaga in underdog role at Notre Dame

Mark Few and the Gonzaga Bulldogs find themselves in unfamiliar territory as they prepare for their Saturday matchup against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. And no, I'm not talking about the Bulldogs making their first appearance at Notre Dame's Joyce Center in the first-ever hardwood meeting between the two schools.

ESPN2 will have the tip starting at 5:30 p.m. (PT).

Gonzaga heads into the contest 4-4 straight up (3-4 against the spread) and in danger of falling below .500 if it can't pull off the upset win over the Irish. The Bulldogs didn't record their fourth loss of the 2009-10 season until their 21st game, an 81-77 upset defeat in overtime at San Francisco on Jan. 30.

A very tough early season schedule continues with this contest; Notre Dame is the fourth top-25 school the Bulldogs will face in their first nine games and they still have Baylor on the near horizon.

The Bulldogs are coming off consecutive losses as small underdogs to Illinois and Washington State. The fell at home as a plus 1½ choice to the Illini, 73-61, on Dec. 4 and then were chased off the Cougars' floor on Dec, 8 in an 81-59 defeat getting four from the college basketball oddsmakers. The defeat at Wazzu just failed to reach the 140-point total, Gonzaga's fifth straight 'under' against only one 'over' so far.

A 76.9 per game scoring average is right at the same amount of points Gonzaga put up last season when the Bulldogs finished 27-7 and ranked 23rd in the country. The current average is very misleading, however. The Bulldogs scored 203 points in their first two games combined, wins over Southern and IUPUI. Since then they've managed to get over the 76-point plateau just once, an 86-57 win over Eastern Washington that just did cover the 27-point line.

Steven Gray is doing his part to put points on the board for the Zags. The senior guard leads the squad with an 18.4 scoring mark, also topping the team charts with 5.4 assists per game. Poor shooting results by Gray the past two games are a big part of Gonzaga's losses to Illinois and Washington State. He scored just 17 points total in the defeats, hitting on 5-of-22 from the field, 2-of-10 from long range.

Gray's counterpart at Notre Dame is Ben Hansbrough who is coming off consecutive 20-point efforts for the Irish. The 6-foot-3 senior hit 15 of his 27 field goal attempts in the last two contests, netting nine of his 14 shots from three-point land.

Hansbrough's efforts weren't enough to help Notre Dame to a win in their last game, however. The Irish were 8-0 on the season when they arrived in Louisville this past Tuesday to meet Kentucky in an SEC/Big East Invitational battle. Freshman Terrence Jones scored a career-best 27 for the Wildcats who strolled to a 72-58 triumph over the Irish as five-point favorites.

That defeat was the second straight at the window for Mike Brey's club. Notre Dame started the year a perfect 4-0 for its backers before the spread losses to Kentucky and Indiana State on Nov. 30. The Irish were favored by 15½ in that one, an 81-72 win.

Gonzaga will return to Spokane to host Lewis-Clark State College on Dec. 16, a game that likely won't make the betting board. Two days later the Bulldogs will be in Dallas for another toughie when they face the No. 10 Baylor Bears at American Airlines Arena.

Notre Dame won't return to action until Dec. 19 when they host Stony Brook.
