    Daily Sports Roundup: December 10

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Red Wings take to the ice for a game against the Habs, while Iowa meets Iowa State on the hardwood, and the Suns host the Blazers.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

Eleven games make up a busy NBA schedule for Friday, with Denver at Toronto, New York at Washington, Charlotte at Indiana, Detroit at Minnesota, the Lakers at Chicago, Oklahoma City at New Orleans, Houston at Milwaukee, Atlanta at San Antonio, Orlando at Utah, Miami at Golden State, and Portland at Phoenix. The Trail Blazers and Suns just met in Portland on Tuesday night, with the home side pulling out a big 106-99 victory as a 2.5-point favorite. Steve Nash turned in a huge game for the Suns in that losing cause, scoring 24 points and adding 15 assists on the night, while Grant Hill was good for 23 points. Wesley Matthews had a team-high 24 points for Portland in that win.

There are no games involving ranked teams on the college basketball schedule for Friday, leaving Utah at Michigan and Iowa State at Iowa as the night's notable matchups. The Cyclones (7-2 SU, 2-3 ATS) beat SE Missouri State 85-58 last game, with Diante Garrett scoring 20 points for Iowa State that day. The Hawkeyes (5-4 SU, 3-5 ATS) got past Northern Iowa 51-39 last time out behind Melsahn Basabe's 14 points.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

As well, there are six games on the NHL's schedule for Friday, with New Jersey at Ottawa, Colorado at Atlanta, Carolina at Dallas, Tampa Bay at Edmonton, Calgary at Anaheim, and Montreal at Detroit. The Canadiens improved to 18-8-2 on the season with a 4-1 romp over the Senators at home on Tuesday night. Mike Cammalleri, Jeff Halpern, Brian Gionta, and Roman Hamrlik had the goals for Montreal in that contest, while Carey Price made 27 saves for the win. The Red Wings won their only meeting with the Canadiens last season, taking away a 3-2 road victory in their visit to Montreal.

Bettors' best friend: Friday's wagering tips

      Who’s hot

NBA: Washington Wizards have seen the over hit in 9 of their past 10 games.

NBA: Utah Jazz are 7-3 ATS in their past 10 overall.

NHL: Detroit Red Wings have seen the over hit in 20 of their past 26 home games.

NHL: Atlanta Thrashers are 8-1 in their past 9 overall.

NCAAB: Iowa State Cyclones are 8-3-1 ATS in their past 12 games overall.

      Who’s not

NBA: Los Angeles Lakers are 1-7 ATS in their past 8 overall.

NBA: Milwaukee Bucks are 1-9-2 ATS in their past 12 overall.

NHL: Calgary Flames are 2-7 in their past 9 road games.

NHL: New Jersey Devils have seen the under hit in 8 of their past 10 games overall.

NCAAB: Michigan Wolverines have seen the under go 13-3-1 in their past 17 home games.

      Key stat

0 -- Wins this season for the Pistons against a team with a winning record. Detroit is 0-11 against teams above .500. The Wizards (0-10) and Kings (0-7) also have failed to beat a team with a winning record this season.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

The Green Bay Packers are expecting left tackle Chad Clifton to play through a concussion at the Detroit Lions on Sunday. Clifton is the anchor of an offensive line that has coughed up 25 sacks this season, the ninth-most in the league. Losing him for any extended period of time could make quarterback Aaron Rodgers an easy target and it difficult to cover a 7-point spread.

      Game of the day

Los Angeles Lakers at Chicago Bulls (PK, 200)

      Notable quotable

“New England is the best team in the NFL, record-wise. But I feel like we’re the best team, period. That’s why I say record-wise. They have the best quarterback, numbers-wise. And everybody likes to go by numbers, right? When we played Philly, everybody was saying they were the best, right? It’s the same situation, and hopefully the same result.” – Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher on facing Tom Brady and the Patriots.

      Notes and tips

The Giants offense could be nearing full strength against the Vikings this weekend. Starting receivers Steve Smith and Hakeem Nicks both were participants in practice on Thursday, as was Ahmad Bradshaw. The running back is nursing wrist and ankle injuries but should be ready to go for the game. The Giants are three-point underdogs in Minnesota.

The Cleveland Cavaliers are sticking with their new lineup that almost upset the Chicago Bulls earlier this week. Coach Byron Scott started a lineup of Anthony Parker, Antawn Jamison, Anderson Varejao, Daniel Gibson and Mo Williams against the Bulls, benching J.J. Hickson, Jamario Moon and handing Ramon Sessions a DNP-CD. It might be great, it might be a disaster, but Scott is sticking with this new unit.

Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry has a sprained right ankle that could keep him sidelined until Christmas or longer. Curry is still awaiting results of an MRI, but the team has signed guard Acie Law and released forward Jeff Adrien. Curry, who is averaging 20.1 points and 5.6 assists this year, has sprained his right ankle four times this season. The Warriors have lost five straight games and 10 or 11.

        Friday's six-pack

NFL trends for the upcoming weekend.........
-- Bears covered eight of last 11 as a home underdog.

-- Arizona covered twice in last eight home games.

-- Seattle covered twice in last 14 games as road underdog.

-- Falcons covered seven of their last nine road games.

-- Dolphins covered 14 of last 18 as a home underdog.

-- Carolina covered once in last six home games.

        ************************************************

Friday's List of 13: What I'm looking for this weekend.......

        13) Patriots are travelling on short work week after big rivalry win to frigid Chicago, to face the 9-3 Bears. Trap game, for sure.

        12) Jets went to Miami in Week 3 and beat the Dolphins easily, but Miami is 5-1 on road, and Gang Green is smarting after the 45-3 debacle Monday night. Very big game for Jets, who still have to play Steelers/Bears.

        11) Chiefs have 2-game lead in AFC West, but Matt Cassel had an appendectomy during week, and backup QB Croyle is 0-9 as an NFL starter. Trip to San Diego could be dicey.

        10) Speaking of the Chargers, favorites are 0-7 vs spread this year if they played the Raiders the week before. Bolts can move within a game of lead in AFC West with a win here.

        9) 6-6 Rams are on road for third week in row, have very tough task in Superdome Sunday. Will be fascinating to see how they do. They’ll need +2 or +3 turnover ratio to pull the upset.

        8) Right now, Carolina would have #1 pick in 2011 Draft, but they drafted Jimmy Clausen last spring. Will Carolina take another QB, or will they trade the pick and first things first, will they earn the first pick by finishing this year with the worst record in the NFL?

        7) By the way, Panthers’ 2nd-round pick next April, the 33rd overall (really a low-level 1st round pick) is now owned by New England. Good move there, Panthers. Hope Armanti Edwards is worth it.

        6) Who signs Cliff Lee is going to be big news; not sure when it’ll happen, but it will set off a series of dominos after it. Funny thing is, the next best free agent pitcher is Carl (American Idle) Pavano. Buyer beware there. Also looks like Zach Greinke will get traded to a team that doesn't get Lee.

        5) Who will a game next, the Bengals or the Reds, who don’t play again until April 1st? Reds have won a game more recently- last Bengal win was September 17.

        4) Think Brian Kelly regrets leaving Cincinnati for Notre Dame, when he could have had the Florida job this winter? Or even the Miami job? Will be fun to see who gets those two plum coaching jobs. Weird that in the last year, Florida State-South Florida-Miami-Florida have all changed head coaches.

        3) Fordham rookie Skelton gets his first NFL start for Arizona at home against the Broncos. Young man has a strong arm, but not sure he’s ready for this yet. One way to find out, I guess.

        2) Can Cowboys upset the Eagles and go to 4-1 under Jason Garrett? He has to be pretty close to clinching himself the job on a fulltime basis. It is important to note that Andy Reid is 18-1 with 10+ days to prepare.

        1) Giants are in good shape in Minnesota, as long as they don’t knock Favre out of the game. Thought rest of the Vikings played much harder last week with Jackson playing QB.

Atlanta Hawks at San Antonio Spurs (-8, 196)

It’s been 166 months since the Hawks last won in the Lone Star State against the Spurs. And things don’t look to be improving anytime soon.

The streak, which started in February of 1997, includes plenty of lopsided wins. Last year, the Spurs posted a 105-90 victory in Texas, behind forward Tim Duncan, who had 21 points, 27 rebounds and six assists. And if the Hawks find a way to contain Duncan on Friday night, it still must contend with the team’s dynamic guards in Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker.

The Hawks are using a starting lineup with Mike Bibby, Marvin Williams, Josh Smith, Al Horford and Jason Collins due to an injury to All-Star guard Joe Johnson and an illness for forward Zaza Pachulia. That greatly effects the team’s depth and will hamper its ability to close out on shooters with such a bulky starting five. It may be able to shut down Duncan, but stopping the pick-and-roll he runs with Ginobili and Parker will be a whole different issue.

Atlanta may be better than it was 13 years ago. But it still isn’t good enough to win in San Antonio.

                            Pick: San Antonio

New York Knicks at Washington Wizards

Quick, who leads the NBA in road wins? That’s right, the Knicks. New York has an NBA-high 9 road wins in 13 away games this season, proving that the team doesn't need friendly home rims to execute its high-octane attack.

Overall, the team has won six straight and is surging because of its ability to beat the teams it should. Mix in an 8-point road win at New Orleans and the Knicks look like a squad that can make some noise in the Eastern Conference. They key for the team has been the outstanding play of free-agent acquisitions Raymond Felton and Amar’e Stoudemire. Felton is averaging 18.6 points, 8.6 assists and 3.9 rebounds per game and Stoudemire has been even better, throwing up 25.7 points and 9.1 boards per night.

Together, the duo is averaging more combined points than any other newly acquired set of teammates in the NBA. Even LeBron James and Chris Bosh in South Beach.

The Wizards would love to run against New York with guards Gilbert Arenas, Kirk Hinrich and rookie John Wall, if he is healthy enough to play. But there will be no answer for Stoudemire inside, as the Knicks will pound the ball down low for a big win.

                            Pick: New York

Utah Utes at Michigan Wolverines (-9)

It took several seasons, but coach John Beilein finally has a roster of the interchangeable parts he needs to play his system at Michigan.

The team is playing more man-to-man defense and mixing in exotic zone looks on defense. When it has the ball, Michigan uses a methodical series of screens to free shooters for threes and make sharp cuts to the rim. And this team’s best days are still ahead of it. Jordan Morgan (11.4 ppg, 6.9 rpg), Tim Hardaway Jr. (10.4 ppg) are both freshman and Darius Morgan (14.4 ppg, 7.5 apg) and Stu Douglass (9.2 ppg) are sophomores.

“But we’re going to be young all year long, it’s not going to stop," Beilein said. "We’ll just get better at being young.”

Meantime, Utah would like to just get better at defense. Utah is giving up 66.8 points per game because it is struggling to keep opposing teams off the boards and give up second-chance points.

Michigan will make mistakes as it goes, but should do enough to notch a convincing win.

                              Pick: Michigan

Iowa State Cyclones at Iowa Hawkeyes (-2.5)

The Cyclones couldn’t be much more reliant on point guard Diante Garrett. The senior is having his best year ever, averaging career-highs in points (17) and assists (6). And don’t think his coach hasn’t noticed.

“He is our engine,” Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg said. “He sets the tone for our team.”

In a recent 85-58 win over Southeast Missouri State he backed up his coach’s words, dropping 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting to go with six assists and five rebounds. So who on Iowa will slow him down? That job falls to junior Bryce Cartwright, who is averaging 10.2 points and 4.1 assists for the Hawkeyes, after spending last season at Paris Junior College in Texas.

Cartwright wasn't penciled in to be the starter, but was thrust into the starting lineup when Cully Payne went down with a sports hernia on Nov. 30.

Expect Cartwright to have a solid game. Just don’t expect it to be enough to shut off Iowa State’s motor.

                              Pick: Iowa State
