Bettors' best friend: Wednesday's wagering tips

    Who’s hot

NBA: Milwaukee Bucks have covered in six of their last seven meetings with the Indiana Pacers.

NBA: Memphis Grizzlies have covered in four of their last five games against the Phoenix Suns.

NBA: Miami Heat have won and covered in four consecutive games.

NHL: Pittsburgh Penguins have won 10 games in a row.

NHL: San Jose Sharks are 9-0-2 in their last 11 meetings with the Philadelphia Flyers.

    Who’s not

NBA: New Orleans Hornets are 2-9-1 in their last 12 against the spread.

NBA: Oklahoma City Thunder have dropped four straight against the number.

NBA: Golden State Warriors have covered in three of their last 10 games.

    Key stat

1 – number of games the New York Knicks have failed to cover the spread in their last 11 contests. The Knicks have won 10 of those games outright after the club opened the year with only three wins in its first 10 games. During the winning streak New York has topped the 110-point plateau eight times.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Darko Milicic (leg), Minnesota Timberwolves – Milicic suffered a nasty charlie horse in the first quarter Monday against the Knicks. Reports after the game indicated that Milicic could barely walk, leaving his status for Wednesday’s game against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Milicic leads the NBA with 2.7 blocks per game.

    Game of the day

No. 23 Notre Dame at No. 16 Kentucky (-5.5, 141.5)

    Notable quotable

"When people start talking about numbers, I think realistically they're trying to sabotage the team and they're trying to get negative feedback from a player to be against his team. If somebody says, 'Ron Artest is not playing as well,' they're trying to take away from the team. That's how I take those questions. People are trying to cause friction." – Los Angeles Lakers’ Ron Artest when questioned about the dip in his stats this year. He’s averaging 8.2 points and 3.2 rebounds per game.

    Notes and tips

The Boston Celtics could be very shorthanded Wednesday against the Nuggets. Shaquille O’Neal (knee), Rajon Rondo (knee, hamstring, foot) and Glen Davis (flu) are all listed as questionable. The Celtics will have an update on who’s in and who’s out following Wednesday’s shootaround.

Oklahoma City Thunder coach Scott Brooks made a statement by benching both Kevin Durant and Jeff Green for most of the third quarter of Monday’s 99-90 loss to the Chicago Bulls, saying that the team “needed a spark.” Expect a much better effort from Durant and Green Wednesday at Minnesota with the Thunder set as 4.5-point favorites.

The St. Louis Blues, who have struggled offensively all season, have lost their top scorer indefinitely. Andy McDonald suffered a concussion when he caught a rut in the ice and fell head-first into Shawn Horcoff’s knee during St. Louis’ overtime loss to Edmonton on Saturday. McDonald leads the Blues with 17 points.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Bulls at Cleveland Cavaliers (6.5, 196.5)

It took a little while to shake the rust off, but Bulls forward Carlos Boozer is rounding into his usual form.

The team’s big free-agent addition scored 29 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in Chicago’s win over Oklahoma City Monday, which was his fourth game back since breaking his hand at the start of the season. Boozer heads into Wednesday’s game against Cleveland averaging 17.8 points per game.

“We still have to get adjusted to playing with Carlos and him playing with us,” point guard Derrick Rose told the Chicago Sun Times. “We are both going to learn when and what to do. Right now, we’re just playing off talent.”

Monday’s win was the Bulls’ second straight victory but just the first time in four games they have covered the spread. They face a Cleveland squad that has dropped four games in a row and has only two wins in its last 10 outings, going 3-7 ATS in that stretch heading into Tuesday.

        Pick: Chicago

Miami Heat at Utah Jazz (-1.5, 189)

Should we be so impressed by the Miami Heat’s winning streak?

The star-studded Heat have won five straight games, but have done so against NBA duds like Cleveland, Washington, Detroit, Milwaukee and an Atlanta team missing its best player.

While most bandwagon jumpers would be clinging to the cart after Miami’s winning run – in which it is 4-1 ATS – smart bettors are being a little more cautious, especially with LeBron and Co. heading to EnergySolutions Arena Wednesday.

The Jazz have won eight of their last 10 games, posting a 7-2 ATS record and climbing to the top of the Northwest Division. Utah already has a win over the Heat this season, handing them a 116-114 overtime loss as a 9-point underdog in South Beach on November 9.

Throwing some gas on Wednesday’s fire was Jazz head coach Jerry Sloan, who chose his words carefully when asked about Miami’s "Big Three" of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh.

“The way I was brought up and the way I played, that’s kind of what I thought: You stick together even though things aren’t good,” Sloan told the Salt Lake Tribune. “That’s kind of like life. We don’t always get what we want, and you have to stick to it - those are great lessons. Although, there’s so much money involved now, I guess you have to go for the money.”

And if NBA bettors want to go for the money, they won’t fade one of the best home teams in the NBA against an over-hyped Heat squad.

        Pick: Utah

Vanderbilt Commodores at No. 11 Missouri Tigers (-4.5, 153.5)

Missouri is coming off a trip that had them traveling about 7,300 miles, so you know they’ll be happy to be in front of their home crowd Wednesday. The big question is whether the home crowd will be happy to see them if they keep falling asleep for long stretches on the court.

The Tigers nearly blew a 20-point lead at the half on Thursday against Oregon only to pull out an 83-80.

"Those guys fought hard to chip away, and just being in this situation, it was stressing me out the way this game was coming out," Marcus Denmon, who scored 19 points, said. "I was just glad to get out of here with a win."

That win didn’t Mizzou backers any good if they had the Tigers as 6.5-point favorites.

The Tigers won’t get away with that against a Vanderbilt team that takes care of the fundamentals. The Commodores rank 37th in the nation in rebounding and 59th shooting 47 percent from the field.

            Pick: Commodores

No. 23 Notre Dame Fighting Irish at No. 16 Kentucky Wildcats (-5.5, 141.5)

In theory this game is on a neutral court at Freedom Hall, but that’s only an hour away from Kentucky University. So the Wildcats expect to have a decided advantage in the stands – though that probably won’t bother the Irish much.

Notre Dame and its five seniors know what the club is in for, having played against Louisville at Freedom Hall each of the last three years. However, that familiarity hasn’t done much to help them out. The Irish haven’t won a game at Freedom Hall since 1980.

Meanwhile, John Calipari expected some early issues with his Wildcats after John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins left for the NBA. Kentucky dropped a 75-73 decision at North Carolina last week as a 1-point favorite.

We were passive (in the loss to) North Carolina," Calipari said. "They were the aggressor, we were passive. Why? Because we had a couple of guys on the floor you could not trust. Then everybody pulls back, no one helps, no one makes a rotation, no one wants to leave their own man because they don't have any trust."

We’ll side with Notre Dame’s experience to cover the number.

            Pick: Irish

                --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
                --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Jose Sharks at Philadelphia Flyers (-140, 5.5)

The ongoing goaltending controversy in Philadelphia will be drawn out for a few more days, with the team keeping projected No. 1 Michael Leighton in the AHL to rehab his recent back surgery.

But in all truth, there is no real rush to get Leighton back between the pipes. The Flyers are getting more-than adequate play from Sergei Bobrovsky and Brian Boucher, who have limited opponents to just 2.28 goals per game in the past seven outings, posting a 2-5 over/under record in that span.

"Obviously, I want to play," Leighton told the Philadelphia Daily News. "I think in a way I could come back right now. It's probably going to be similar to what we did now. If Paul (Holmgren, the Flyers’ GM) wants to take me off injured reserve then, great. But if I feel and he feels that I'm not ready, and the doctor is still questioning it, then maybe I will stay on IR. It's just kind of a wait-and-see thing."

Leighton hasn’t been that impressive during his time with the farm team. He’s 0-2 with the Adirondack Phantoms and boasts a ho-hum 87.5 save percentage. And with San Jose, one of the NHL’s most dangerous offensive clubs coming to town, Philly is more than happy to go with the backups, who could be winning over the top job regardless Leighton’s eventual return.

                Pick: Under

Toronto Maple Leafs at Pittsburgh Penguins (-250, 5.5)

It seems like nothing can stop Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins, except maybe the lowly Toronto Maple Leafs. Regardless of their 10-game winning streak and Crosby’s 12 goals in that span, the Penguins have always struggled against the Leafs.

Toronto has won five of the past eight head-to-head contests with Pittsburgh, including a 4-3 road victory on October 13. The Maple Leafs have loved life in the Steel City, winning 11 of their last 16 road games in Pittsburgh.

The Leafs enter Wednesday’s game off two shootout wins, most recently edging the Washington Capitals Monday night. Toronto battled back from three goals down in the third period to force extra time and steal a 5-4 win at the Verizon Center.

"It's two small steps in the right direction," goaltender Jonas Gustavsson told reporters following Monday’s win. "We can't be happy with this, but it shows a lot of character coming back in games, working hard, no matter what the scoreboard (says)."

NHL bettors will be getting a sweet price on the visitors Wednesday with the public jumping all over the Penguins. The Leafs’ past success in Pittsburgh could turn out to be an early Christmas present for bettors gutsy enough to play the underdog.

                Pick: Toronto

                      Wednesday's six-pack

-- Chicago Bears are 6-1 this year when an underdog, 3-2 when they're favored to win.

-- 55-year old Kelsey Grammer got engaged to a 29-year old this week. Fact that he is worth $85M seems relevant here.

-- If the NBA buys the Hornets and moves them out of New Orleans, shouldn’t Seattle have right of first refusal, after way city was shafted by Sonics moving to Oklahoma?

-- Falcons are 0-2 in Pennsylvania, 10-0 outside it. Luckily for them, Super Bowl is in xxxxxx this year.

-- Did you know each player on a college football team gets a swag bag from bowls, with as much as $500 worth of stuff for each kid? Some good stuff, too.

-- Most unusual college hoop scheduling of the year: BYU-Vermont tonight in Glens Falls, NY, hometown of BYU star Jimmer Fredette. Joint is sold out, 6,600+. Home game for BYU, 2,200 miles from Provo.

Wednesday's List of 13: Our NFL List of 13..........

                      13) Raiders—Beat Chargers twice, blocking two punts in first 6:00 of first game, then getting two turnovers in first 8:00 in Sunday’s game. Easier to play when you lead 9-0/14-0 right off the bat.

                      12) Buccaneers—Haven’t beaten a team with winning record yet, but do winnable road game in Washington Sunday.

                      11) Jaguars—Pounded ball down titans’ throats with Jones-Drew; one of two teams to win in Week 13 without scoring in second half (Chiefs).

                      10) Bears—Bye came at perfect time; they lost three of four right before it, are 5-0 since, allowing 15.6 ppg. 9-3 is 9-3. Martz has improved Cutler’s play in red zone, which is no small feat.

                      9) Giants—Big Blue lost 44-7 in Minnesota LY; if they can avoid knocking Favre out Sunday, should be able to avenge that loss. Just make sure Vikings don’t put Jackson in at QB; he’s better than Favre right now.

                      8) Eagles—Fans all around me Thursday night were moaning about the defense, with Samuel on the shelf. NFL trainers earn every penny of their salary, getting these injured players back on the field.

                      7) Jets—Scored 9-0-3 points in their losses. After Monday’s debacle, they need fast start against Miami in front of non-sellout crowd Sunday to keep the naysayers at bay.

5b) Steelers—Big Ben’s nose looked like 10th hole at Augusta National Sunday night, but Steelers wouldn’t admit it was broken. Only way it wasn’t broken is if Ben is related to freakin’ Gumby.

5a) Ravens—Hideous game management cost them sweep of Steelers. If they’re playing road games in January, that’s the reason why.

                      4) Saints—Host Rams this week, in what could be first round playoff preview, only game would be in St Louis. Saints’ close calls with 4-8 Dallas/2-10 Bengals infer that Rams can hang with defending champs.

                      3) Packers—Last three wins are all by 18+ points. All three of their losses are by 3 points. Host Bears in what could be critical season finale.

                      2) Patriots—Would serve Belichick right if some Jet had cheap-shotted Brady when he was throwing with 4:18 left in a 45-3 game.

                      1) Falcons—Gutty win by team that finds ways to win. Kick return for TD when down 10 was huge. Monday night game with Saints in Week 16 should decide division title.
