Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Denver Nuggets at Charlotte Bobcats (1.5, 202)

The Nuggets are riding a seven-game winning streak now after slipping by Memphis 108-107 on Sunday night, but they aren’t doing their supporters any favors. Denver was set as a 6-point favorite on Sunday and the club has covered only twice over its last 10 games with one push in the mix. However, George Karl has a little extra motivation on Tuesday night as he has a chance to join the NBA’s 1,000-win club.

"It's been an incredible run and I do appreciate all the good players and I appreciate my time here in Denver and I'm very humbled by my opportunity to win 1,000," Karl told reporters Sunday night. "But, I'd like to get out of the spotlight and get it over with and continue to try to build this team into the best team we could have in Denver."

Karl will have to chat with his team about its meltdown in the third quarter of Sunday’s game that also saw Carmelo Anthony pick up another technical for arguing a call. Anthony hit just four of his 20 shots from the floor and should bounce back with a better effort in this big game for Karl.

    Pick: Nuggets

New Jersey Nets at Atlanta Hawks (-6.5, 186.5)

After the Nets suffered a 25-point loss to the Boston Celtics on Sunday, their fourth straight defeat, it’s getting hard for them to stay positive.

Devin Harris returned to the lineup after sitting out the last two with a left knee strain, but wasn’t satisfied with his play, finishing with seven points, three assists and four turnovers in 24 minutes

"Not where it usually is, but I'll get it back," Harris told reporters of his knee. "I felt fine. Obviously, I would have liked to have played a little bit better, but as far as injury-wise, I felt pretty good."

The Nets continue to fall asleep for quarters at a time and can’t recover when they snap out of it. Against the Celtics they were outscored 30-12 in the second session, including an 11-0 run to close out the second quarter.

“Just fight,” backup guard Jordan Farmar said. “That’s the one thing we have been doing consistently for the most part all season, so it’s disappointing to not bring what we’re capable of, and even if you go out, go out swinging.’’

They’ll need a lot better effort against Atlanta, which has won five of its last six heading into Monday’s date with Orlando. However, Atlanta is just 3-13 against the spread in its last 16 home games.

    Pick: Nets

No. 14 Memphis Tigers at No. 4 Kansas Jayhawks (-12, 150)

The Kansas Jayhawks have one of the most explosive offenses in the nation and have four players scoring in double-digits just about every night, but they’re coming off a major scare against UCLA last week.

With the game tied and no time left on the clock, Mario Little was awarded a pair of free-throws to push Kansas to a 77-76 with the Jayhawks favored by 17.5 points. Kansas couldn’t cover the number in the clubs game before that either, winning 87-79 over Arizona as a 9-point favorite.

The Big Apple hasn’t been kind to the Jayhawks either. They have lost their last two trips to Madison Square Garden as they get ready to take part in the Jimmy V Classic.

"We don't trick it up much and Memphis doesn't either," Kansas coach Bill Self said. "But in the NCAA tournament you are always worried about a style you won't see till the NCAA tournament and Memphis is that way with its incredibly athletic team."

The Tigers are one team that go bucket-for-bucket with the Jayhawks and the Tigers’ energy should keep this one close as Kansas continues to work the kinks out.

        Pick: Memphis

No. 8 Michigan State Spartans at No. 7 Syracuse Orange (1.5, 137)

The Michigan State Spartans know one thing about Tuesday’s big test against the Syracuse Orange – they’d better get ready to face a nasty zone defense.

“You pretty much know you’re going to face a 2-3 zone, with a 7-footer, a 6-10 and a 6-7,” Spartans junior forward Draymond Green told mlive.com. “So you always know that about Syracuse. But their zone will be longer and it’s not going to have any gaps.”

Not like the zone that the Spartans just saw from Bowling Green in a 74-39 blowout on Saturday. Even still, Michigan State had problems with that defense in the first half when they shot just 8-of-27 from the floor. The Spartans figured it out in the second half, but Tuesday’s game in New York will be a huge test for Tom Izzo’s bunch.

The Orange are giving up only 58.9 points per game and their defense will be on display Tuesday at MSG.

        Pick: Under

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
          --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ottawa Senators at Montreal Canadiens (-160, 5)

The Ottawa Senators felt OK about a 1-0 shootout loss to the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday, but they felt a lot better when Chris Kelly scored three times against the Rangers on Sunday to snap the worst scoring drought in franchise history that lasted 202:57.

"We just found a way to win the game (Sunday),” Ottawa coach Cory Clouston told reporters following the win. “We didn't get discouraged after the first period, when we felt we could have had a one- or two-goal lead. We stuck with it and, for the most part, the last two games we played a full 60 (minutes)."

Sunday’s win was only Ottawa’s second over its last seven games and gets them back on track before a matchup with the Canadiens, who have won three of their last four.

Pascal Leclaire may get the start in goal again for the Sens as Brian Elliot missed Sunday’s game with an upper-body injury. Look for a little offense in this one.

          Pick: Over

Tampa Bay Lightning at Calgary Flames (-130, 5.5)

We all knew Steven Stamkos was going to hit a cold streak at some point. He heads into Tuesday’s game without a goal in his last five, with just two assists over that span.

Luckily for Lightning bettors, Tampa Bay didn’t need much help from its young superstar in a 6-5 win over the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday. Simon Gagne and Martin St. Louis both notched a goal and a pair of assists.

"I think we're starting to see the real Gagne now," coach Guy Boucher told reporters.

That’s great news for Tampa Bay. Stamkos’ skill and work ethic are through the roof, but this team needs to start giving him support, especially now that Steve Downie was added to the team’s injury list. Downie, who has been among Tampa Bay’s top six forwards all season, will be out until January after suffering a high-ankle sprain.

The Flames are giving up 33 shots per game over their last five and if they do that again on Tuesday, Stamkos and the Lightning will make them pay.

          Pick: Lightning

Pucking the trends: Flyers skating neck-and-neck with Pens
            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every week, we update you on who's hot, who's not and situational betting spots in the National Hockey League.

            HOT TEAM: Philadelphia Flyers

They still have a revolving door in net. They still have questions about offensive consistency. And they still are in a highly competitive, highly skilled division.

Yet, the Flyers, the defending Eastern Conference champions, simply will not go away.

While Sidney Crosby and the Penguins continue to light up scoreboards on the other side of the Keystone State, the Flyers continue to show their instate rivals that it’s not going to be easy taking that league crown away from them.

Philadelphia, after a disappointing 3-0 loss to Boston Wednesday, responded with two wins in 24 hours, over the Devils and Islanders, this weekend.

“It seems we just about always find a way to win," Flyers forward Danny Briere told reporters.

It’s hard to argue. Philadelphia has at least one point in seven of the last eight games, and they’ve won five of them outright.

They are 17-7-4 through 28 games, they have 38 points, they already have seven wins on the road and, despite the unbelievable run that the Penguins are on, the two teams are still tied on top of the Atlantic Division.

This week, however, won’t be easy. They must play San Jose and Toronto back to back, Wednesday and Thursday, and then they close at Boston Saturday, the only team to beat them in regulation in the last two weeks.

            COLD TEAM: Minnesota Wild

The Wild are off until Thursday and that’s a good thing the way things are going in Minnesota. The Wild have lost five in a row and seven of the past eight, and the offense has been near invisible.

In the last four games, Minnesota has topped two goals just once and the low point was last Monday, when they were blanked 3-0 by lowly Calgary.

But again, perhaps some rest and relaxation will refocus this group, which despite the skid, does have some talent.

On Thursday, the Wild, who entered Sunday in the 13th spot in the Western Conference, begin a West Coast swing at Phoenix and will make stops over the weekend in Los Angeles and Anaheim.

So, it won’t be easy breaking this slide. Both Phoenix and Los Angeles entered Sunday in a playoff position with 30 points. The misery may continue for Minnesota.

            OVER PLAY: Tampa Bay Lightning

The Lightning will have a tough time keeping up with Washington all season in the Southeast Division, but boy, will it be a fun ride. With the offense that the Lightning continues to generate, they are not only a fun watch, they’re a fun team as an "over" play.

            Profitable, too.

Keep in mind, the magic number we always talk about with regard to hockey totals: Five, for and against. If a team is topping that magic number with regularity, they become a solid buy as an “over” play. Well, the Lightning are there, folks.

In the last six games, Tampa Bay has topped five goals in each and in the last two games, they’ve posted 20, for and against. Twenty!

The good times could continue this week, when the Lightning take to Western Canada. Games against the Flames (Tuesday), Oilers (Friday) and Canucks (Saturday) may lend themselves to some even more offense.

            Stay tuned.

            UNDER PLAY: Los Angeles Kings

The Kings missed out on Ilya Kovalchuk this summer, and while it hasn’t hurt them in the standings, it may be holding them back just a little on offense. Los Angeles will be a force to reckon with in the West all season, make no mistake. But they are not hitting the back of the net much these days and you should bookmark them as an “under” buy.

In the last six games, the Kings, who are off until Thursday, did not top five goals, for and against, once. Not once, and they were held to one goal or less in three of them.

Again, though, with 30 points, they are right there in the West. They shook a four-game losing streak with back-to-back wins over Florida and Detroit last week at home and now have a few days to prepare for lowly Calgary.

With all that said, it doesn’t mean they’re going to top five goals versus the Flames. So monitor the Kings as an “under” team moving forward.

            Surveying the schedule:

-- A good candidate for the “Tired Legs Watch” this week, are the Red Wings. On Monday, Detroit will face San Jose. It’ll be their third game in four days and then they still have three more games this week after the Sharks. Whew. By the time they get to New Jersey Saturday night, they might be a real nice go-against team.

-- Flag the Canucks as a possible “buy” team this week, as they stand to get plenty of rest. Vancouver has two days to prepare for Anaheim Wednesday and two more to prepare for Tampa Bay Saturday, both at home. With teams traveling a bunch and squeezing in back-to-backs aplenty as we approach the holidays, that’s a pretty cushy schedule for the Canucks. Take advantage.

              Daily Sports Roundup: December 7

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The college hoops schedule offers up the annual Jimmy V Classic, while the Habs host the Senators, and the Wizards take on the Lakers.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The seven-game slate for the NBA on Tuesday has New Jersey at Atlanta, Cleveland at Philadelphia, Denver at Charlotte, Golden State at Dallas, Detroit at Houston, Phoenix at Portland, and Washington at the Lakers. The Wizards (6-13 SU, 8-11 ATS) were beaten 125-108 in Phoenix in their last game on Sunday, as Andray Blatche poured in a team-high 24 points. John Wall picked up 12 points and 12 assists for Washington in that loss. Kobe Bryant was good for 22 points for Los Angeles in that matchup, and Pau Gasol had 16 points on the night.

As well, Tuesday's college basketball schedule is highlighted by the Jimmy V Classic games at Madison Square Garden that match up four ranked teams: Memphis vs. Kansas, and Michigan State vs. Syracuse. Memphis (7-0 SU, 1-4 ATS) got past Western Kentucky 77-61 last time out, while Kansas (7-0 SU, 3-2 ATS) slipped past UCLA 77-76 last game. The Tigers and Jayhawks last met in November 2009, with Kansas pulling out a 57-55 win. Michigan State (6-2 SU, 4-4 ATS) romped past Bowling Green 74-39 in their most recent outing, while Syracuse (8-0 SU,1 -6 ATS) is coming off a 65-59 win vs. N.C. State. The Orange beat the Spartans 96-83 back in January 2004.

              Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are five games on the NHL's schedule for Tuesday, with Buffalo at Boston, Colorado at Florida, Tampa Bay at Calgary, Anaheim at Edmonton, and Ottawa at Montreal. The 12-14-2 Senators got back into the win column on Sunday afternoon, topping the Rangers 3-1 at Madison Square Garden on the strength of a Chris Kelly hat trick. Pascal Leclaire stopped 25 of 26 New York shots in that contest. The 17-8-2 Canadiens are coming off a 3-1 home win over San Jose on Saturday afternoon, with Mathieu Darche, Tomas Plekanec, and Mike Cammalleri scoring in the win for Montreal. The Canadiens and Senators have met three times so far this year; Montreal is up 2-1.

Bettors' best friend: Tuesday's wagering tips

                Lines to watch

NCAAB: Kansas opened as an 11-point favorite over Memphis, but now sit at -12.5.

                Who’s hot

NCAAB: Purdue Boilermakers have covered in four of their last five.

NBA: Dallas Mavericks have won nine straight, covering seven times.

NHL: Edmonton Oilers have won four games in a row.

                Who’s not

NBA: Cleveland Cavaliers have dropped four consecutive games against the number.

NBA: Golden State Warriors have lost eight of nine, covering three times over that span.

NHL: Colorado Avalanche have lost three straight and five of their last six.

NHL: Calgary Flames have won just five of their last 18 games.

                Key stat

64.5 – percentage the Kansas Jayhawks are shooting from the free-throw line. That’s basically the only problem Kansas has on offense as the club ranks first in the nation in field goal percentage and third in scoring offense (89.9 points per game).

                Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Pau Gasol (hamstring), Los Angeles Lakers – The Lakers were getting pretty worried about their power forward’s hamstring over the weekend, but it looks as though some time off did it good. He said it felt much better and the team hopes he’ll be able to play their back-to-back on Monday-Tuesday barring any setbacks.

                Game of the day

NCAAB: No. 15 Memphis Tigers at No. 4 Kansas Jayhawks (-12.5, 150)

                Notable quotable

"They're the fourth team in the country. Coach (Bill) Self is a Hall of Famer. They've got big-time players and it's gonna be a big-time atmosphere. But I'm just letting everyone know, this is a long season. This Kansas game isn't any bigger than this game (Saturday). It wasn't any bigger than our exhibition games. This is another game and our preparation will remain the same." – Memphis coach Josh Pastner downplaying Tuesday’s big Memphis-Kansas matchup at the Jimmy V Classic.

                Notes and tips

The Portland Trailblazers will be without Andre Miller for Tuesday's game against the Suns after he was suspended one game for his part in an altercation during Sunday's game against the Clippers. Portland coach Nate McMillian hasn't named a replacement for Miller yet. Miller is averaging 13.5 points and 7.2 assists per game.

Tampa Bay Lightning coach Guy Boucher held a meeting with his two goaltenders, Dan Ellis and Mike Smith over the weekend to discuss the team’s inconsistency between the pipes. Tampa Bay allows a league-low 27.7 shots per game, but Smith and Ellis have a combined .878 save percentage – worst in the NHL. The Lightning visit Calgary on Tuesday.

Yao Ming was supposed to return to Houston's lineup Tuesday against Detroit, but he skipped Monday's practice and won't play against the Pistons. Yao has been out of action for the last month with a sprained ankle. He practiced twice last week, though the Rockets are going to be cautious with their big man until he is 100 percent.

                  Tuesday's six-pack

-- Ravens scored total of 3 second half points in last two games, after scoring 10+ points in second half of their previous six games.

-- I left for Philly 8:00am Thursday, got back to Albany 33 hours later; during that time, gas prices went up 12 cents a gallon. Gas is 35 cents a gallon cheaper in New Jersey than it is here. How can that be?

-- Why would the Nationals pay Jayson Werth $18M a year? His numbers almost have to go down, moving into a bigger ballpark. Couldn’t they have kept Adam Dunn for lot less than $18M a year?

-- Watching two teams play now, hard to believe Arizona Cardinals beat the Saints earlier this year.

-- In their last five games, Redbirds are just 12-61 (19.7%) on 3rd down conversions. They desperately need a competent QB. .

-- Rest in peace, Don Meredith; his good humor and Texas charm was a big part of the early Monday Night Football telecasts.

Tuesday's List of 13: Initial thoughts on the bowl games

                  13) The bowl system stinks; 8-4 Temple beat 8-4 UConn, but Huskies go to a BCS bowl game, while Owls get no bowl at all. You mean to tell me Temple isn’t favored over Middle Tennessee on a neutral field? It stinks.

                  12) UConn opened as a 17-point dog against Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl. We’ve seen the Sooners in this spot before, and it hasn’t turned out well for them.

                  11) Liberty Bowl has two good freshman QB in UCF's Godfrey and Georgia’s Murray; this will be a fun game to watch.

                  10) Am wondering about mental state of San Diego State’s players; not only didn’t they get a bowl trip, playing at home in the Poinsettia Bowl, they’re playing Navy, which will have lot of crowd support, seeing as San Diego is a military town.

                  9) Northern Illinois coach Jerry Kill is leaving the Huskies to go coach Minnesota, which makes NIU’s bowl trip to Boise a bittersweet one.

                  8) Nebraska ran ball for 383 yards in a 56-21 waxing of Washington in Seattle back in September; who decided a rematch would be a good idea?

                  7) Arizona lost its last four games, allowing 36 ppg, draws Oklahoma State (10-2) in Alamo Bowl in San Antonio, Big 12 country. Wildcats better practice blocking for kicks after their last game, when they had a couple PATs blocked that cost them a win vs rival Arizona State.

                  6) Independence Bowl not only has no SEC team this year, it has two option teams (Air Force/Georgia Tech). Over/under on total passes in game figures to be around 15.

                  5) Congrats to Florida International on going to their first bowl; they’re playing Toledo in the Little Caeser’s Bowl in Detroit.

                  4) Boise State-Utah is battle of disappointed teams in Las Vegas; no one can be disappointed to get sent to Vegas, but from a strictly football sense, Broncos have to be crushed to be here instead one of the higher-profile games.

                  3) Virginia Tech-Stanford matches two hot teams in Orange Bowl. Hokie fans travel well, Stanford’s probably won’t. Could be the Cardinal swan song for highly sought-after coach Jim Harbaugh.

                  2) Mid-level bowls have a built-in edge as far as getting teams, in that they’re only football on TV those nights, so people at home have to watch their game on TV if they want to watch football. Exposure helps recruiting.

                  1) Opening over/under on Fiesta Bowl was 74.5; first team to 50 wins? Oregon opened as a 3-point favorite, but now Auburn is favored by 3. Thats a lot of money being put on the Tigers so far.
