Bettors' best friend: Monday's wagering tips

    Lines to watch

The total for Monday's Jets-Pats game has dropped as low as 44.5 at some books after opening at 47 points.

    Weather to watch

New York Jets at New England Patriots – 15 mph winds expected.

    Who’s hot

NBA: New York Knicks have covered in nine of their last 10.

NBA: Los Angeles Clippers have covered in five of their last six.

NHL: Dallas Stars have won six in a row.

NHL: Pittsburgh Penguins have nine straight wins.

    Who’s not

NBA: Milwaukee Bucks have covered just once over the last nine games.

NBA: Atlanta Hawks have dropped three straight against the spread.

NHL: Columbus Blue Jackets have lost consecutive games.

    Key stat

50.4 – percentage of passes opposing quarterback are completing against the New York Jets, with no quarterback cracking the 60-percent mark. Tom Brady completed 20 of his 36 passes (55 percent) against the Jets when New York downed the Pats 28-14 as a 3-point underdog in Week 2.

    Injury that shouldn't be overlooked

Dwight Lowery (concussion), New York Jets - The New York corner back is listed as questionable for Monday night's game, but present speculation is that he will suit up. With safety Jim Leonhard on the injured reserve with a fractured tibia, the Jets need all healthy hands on deck in the secondary.

    Game of the day

New York Jets at New England Patriots (-3.5, 45)

    Notable quotable

“There are very few coaches that I steal from; Bill Belichick is one of them. So creative, what he does coverage-wise, how he looks at things, puts traps out there. Guy's an amazing coach. The best coach in football; it's not even close. That's the guy that I will study. Each week, I'll just pop their tape on to see what he's doing because he is creative, he's smart.” – Jets coach Rex Ryan on Pats coach Bill Belichick.

    Notes and tips

A stomach virus is ravaging the Orlando Magic roster. Four Magic players returned home to Florida while the team was getting ready for Saturday’s game in Milwaukee. Dwight Howard and Mickael Pietrus left the team on Friday, while Jameer Nelson and J.J. Redick headed back to Orlando Saturday and were to meet with team doctor Vince Wilson.

Sacramento Kings point guard Tyreke Evans says he needs to look for his own shot more to help the Kings’ offense. He scored 25 points and added eight boards and five assists in a 105-103 loss to the Mavericks as 7-point underdogs on Saturday, which was the first time the Kings covered the number in six games. Evans had been held below 20 points in six straight before that game, but he said after the game that he knows he needs to score for Sacramento’s offense.

The San Jose Sharks are shaking up their top line in preparation of Monday's tilt with the Detroit Red Wings. With just three wins in their last nine games, coach Todd McLellan dropped Patrick Marleau from the top line and put Torrey Mitchell in his place with Joe Thornton and Dany Heatley. Marleau will likely skate with Joe Pavelski and Jamie McGinn.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Minnesota Timberwolves at New York Knicks (N/A)

The Minnesota Timberwolves couldn’t do anything wrong in Saturday night’s 129-95 blowout of the Cleveland Cavaliers. Kevin Love put up 28 points and 19 rebounds, while canning a career-best five treys in three quarters worth of work before hitting the bench. The club knocked down a franchise-high 18 3-pointers and made 11 of their first 12 trey attempts to build a 25-point lead with two minutes left in the first half.

Most significantly, they did all of that without leading scorer Michael Beasely, who sprained his ankle Friday against the Spurs and is listed as day-to-day.

"(All the injuries) have all been blows but you just got to keep going," Minnesota coach Kurt Rambis said. "Can't worry about it. Can't cry about it. Gives opportunities for other guys to step up and play and its part of the NBA team existence and we just have to move forward."

That’s what they’ll look to do Monday at Madison Square Garden for a date with the surging Knicks. Minnesota has covered only once on the road all season and will have their hands full with New York, especially as the injuries continue to pile up.

      Pick: Knicks

Miami Heat at Milwaukee Bucks (+4, 184)

Sharp bettors knew early this season that it would take a while for the Miami Heat to come together. Unfortunately for Heat backers, that process is taking longer than a lot of people expected.

Some time on the road often brings teams closer together and that’s just what the Heat are hoping for when they head out on their first extended road trip of the season. The club has won four straight and LeBron James’ blowup with coach Erik Spoelstra is blowing over.

"I don't think the world was coming to an end," Chris Bosh told reporters. "We knew that we lost games that we were capable of winning. We were right there. And I think we were standing in our own way. Just to talk about it, it was needed. We needed to talk and kind of feel each other out and do the things off the court that really nobody sees in order to bring this team closer together and be more of a unit."

Miami will look to start this trip with a bang and Milwaukee will pay for it.

      Pick: Heat

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
          --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Jose Sharks at Detroit Red Wings (-160, 5.5)

Detroit’s blueline pairings aren’t what Red Wings coach Mike Babock originally had in mind but he’s more than happy with the results coming from the combos of Nicklas Lidstrom-Brad Stuart, Jonathan Ericsson-Brian Rafalski and Niklas Kronwall-Ruslan Salei.

“I like this way better because I like the way the puck’s moving,” Babcock told Michigan Live. “I like the size with Nick and Raf. That’s important for us. All in all, it’s been positive.”

That’s an understatement. The Wings are 17-4-2-1 through their first 24 games, they own one of the best penalty kills in the hockey and they are one of the least penalized teams in the league.

The Wings are coming off a 3-2 overtime loss to the Kings so look for them to bounce back against the underachieving San Jose Sharks.

          Pick: Wings

Dallas Stars at Columbus Blue Jackets (-125, 5.5)

These are strange days for the Dallas Stars. The club is 6-0 over its last six games and 8-2 over its last 10 but the rumor mill won’t stop churning out stories about All-Star center Brad Richards being shipped out of town.

Richards, a gifted play-making center with a Stanley Cup ring on his resume, is a unrestricted free agent this offseason and the Stars, who are trying to find a new ownership group, aren’t looking for any expensive, long-term deals to be signed.

The Stars are ignoring the off ice issues and are focused on their own play – as we saw in Saturday’s 4-3 overtime win over the Wild.

“There was a time last year when we probably didn’t respond the right way or didn’t have that mental toughness,” Stars captain Brenden Morrow told the Dallas Morning News. “But now it really seems like every guy on the bench is saying, ‘OK, I’m going to make the difference.’ And so far, somebody has.”

          Pick: Stars

              Daily Sports Roundup: December 6

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The top dogs from the AFC East clash on the gridiron, while the Magic play host to the Hawks, and the Sharks look for a win in Detroit.

              Colliding on the gridiron . . .

It's the Jets (9-2 SU, 7-4 ATS) vs. the Patriots (9-2 SU, 6-4-1 ATS) in New England for Monday Night Football this week, with the teams entering the contest tied for first place in the AFC East standings. The Jets are coming off a 26-10 home win over the Bengals in a Thanksgiving contest, with Mark Sanchez throwing for 166 yards with a touchdown and an interception in the victory. The Patriots also last played on Thanksgiving, beating the Lions handily 45-24 in Detroit behind 341 yards passing and four touchdowns from Tom Brady. The Patriots are 5-0 at home this season, and the Jets are 5-0 on the road. Oddsmakers have New England as a 3.5-point favorite for Monday, with a total of 44.5.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up seven games on Monday night, with Toronto at Indiana, Minnesota at New York, Oklahoma City at Chicago, Miami at Milwaukee, Memphis at Utah, Sacramento at the Clippers, and Atlanta at Orlando. The Hawks (13-8 SU, 8-13 ATS) are coming off an 89-77 loss in Miami on Saturday night, with Al Horford providing a team-high 22 points for Atlanta. The Magic (15-5 SU, 7-12-1 ATS) were beaten 96-85 in Milwaukee on Saturday, with Dwight Howard, Jameer Nelson, and J.J. Redick all missing the game with a stomach virus. The Magic also played host to the Hawks back on November 8, with Orlando pulling out the 93-89 victory as a 9-point favorite at home.

There are also two ranked teams in action around college basketball on Monday, with Alcorn State at No. 5 Kansas State, and Portland at No. 23 Washington State. The Pilots (7-2 SU, 5-2 ATS) have won three straight games, knocking off Montana 58-54 on the road last time out; Nemanja Mitrovic tossed in 16 points for Portland in that contest. The Huskies (5-2 SU, 3-3 ATS) are riding a two-game winning streak, topping Texas Tech 108-79 last game; Justin Holiday scored 20 points for Washington in that victory. Washington played host to Portland back in December 2009, winning 89-54 that game.

              Taking a trip around the rink . . .

As well, there are five games on the NHL's schedule for Monday, with New Jersey at Pittsburgh, Toronto at Washington, Nashville at Atlanta, Dallas at Columbus, and San Jose at Detroit. The Sharks fell to 12-9-4 on the season with a 3-1 road loss in Montreal on Saturday afternoon. Benn Ferriero had the lone San Jose goal in that contest, while Antti Niemi stopped just 16 of 19 Montreal shots. The 17-4-3 Red Wings fell 3-2 in overtime to the Sharks in Los Angeles on Saturday night, with Jonathan Ericsson and Todd Bertuzzi providing Detroit's two markers. The Wings and Sharks met in San Jose back on November 30, with Detroit rolling to a 5-3 road victory over the Sharks that day.

                Monday's six-pack

-- Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh voted Wisconsin 8th in the last poll, lower than any other coach.

-- Florida's Urban Meyer was only SEC coach to vote Oregon 1st.

-- Coaches at Wisconsin-Michigan State-Illinois all voted Stanford behind three Big 11 teams. Uh-huh.

-- Washington Nationals gave Jayson Werth $126M for seven years, replacing Adam Dunn, who signed with the White Sox.

-- Aaron Rodgers is first Green Bay QB since Bart Starr in 1966 to go five consecutive starts without throwing an INT.

-- Peyton Manning is first QB since at least 1969 to throw two INTs for opponents' TDs in consecutive games.

                **************************************

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday......

                13) Baltimore Raven coaches won't sleep well this week, after turning ball over on sack/fumble own 9-yard line when they were nursing 10-6 lead with 3:14 left. Defense hadn't given up a TD all night; would have been wise to run the ball, punt it, then trust the defense to hold the fort. They didn't and it wound up costing them a pivotal game.

                12) Miami Dolphin coaches might sleep even worse, as their jobs could be in jeopardy after a 13-10 home loss to Cleveland. Fish threw an INT on a tipped ball deep in their territory in the last minute, when game was tied. Absolutely hideous way to lose.

                11) Raiders jumped out to quick 14-0 lead in San Diego and buried the Chargers 28-13, thanks to fumble/INT by Chargers on 2nd/3rd drive of the game. Last time they met, Oakland blocked two San Diego punts in the first quarter, so they were more ready to play from start both times.

                10) Interesting stat on the Raiders: they've had 10+ accepted penalties in all six of their wins this year. Oakland is 0-4 with less than 10 penalties. Its fair to say the Raiders try to intimidate teams.

                9) Minnesota Vikings have to ask themselves which QB gives them a better chance to win right now, Favre or Jackson? Considering Favre is retiring and this year's team isn't contending, it seems stupid to wheel a 41-year old Favre out there, when you need to find out if Jackson is the guy to lead your team starting next fall.

                8) NFL needs to adopt points per possession in red zone as an official stat, in addition to TD percentage. A TD and an empty trip isn't much better than getting field goals on two consecutive trips. I realize that I'm a complete dork when it comes to stats, but this would be revealing.

                8) Its not often a team throws four INTs and wins by 24 points, but the Vikings managed that Sunday. I'm thinking the last month of the season are going to wind up being successful auditions for both Leslie Frazier and Jason Garrett, as they try to turn their interim coaching stints into full-time gigs.

                7) Its hard to win football games without a good QB; Tennessee and the Cardinals are finding that out firsthand. Arizona actually threw rookie QB Skelton into the fray after 2nd-stringer Max Hall got hurt Sunday. It looks like Derek Anderson's days are numbered in Glendale.

                6) New Orleans overcame a 20-yard disadvantage in field position in its 34-30 win at Cincinnati; Brees drew the Bengals' defensive line offside on a 4th-and-2, giving Saints a first down when they were going to take a delay penalty, then kick tying FG. Extreme stupidity by the Bengals. Total lack of discipline. They're way too talented to be 2-10.

                5) Hope the Redskins didn't guarantee Donovan McNabb too much $$; they had six turnovers in a dismal 31-7 loss in Swamp Stadium. Having an older QB on a non-contending team doesn't make sense. What makes even less sense is not having a QB of the future on the roster.

                4) What will Carolina do in the draft next spring? Newton and Mallett are both terrific QB prospects-- so is the Luck kid from Stanford, but Panthers already have Jimmy Clausen, so what do they do? Anybody they draft will help, they have so many holes, but when you have one of the top picks in the draft, you need to hit a home run.

                3) Teams with negative turnover ratios are 4-9 this week, which is good for teams that are minus in turnovers. They're usually much worse.

                2) So far in Week 13, favorites are 7-8 vs spread, home teams are 6-9. Over is 8-7 this week, heading into the Monday night game in Foxboro.

                1) I go to a friend's bar every Sunday to watch football; since the Rams were 6-42 the last three years, it wasn't always fun. Now that the Rams are 6-6 and contending for a playoff spot, its back to being a lot of fun.
