Lakers try to avoid four-game losing skid

    LOS ANGELES LAKERS (13-5)

    at HOUSTON ROCKETS (5-12)

    Tip-off: Wednesday, 8:30 p.m. EDT
Line: Los Angeles -6, Total: 205.5

The Lakers have lost three in a row and look to avoid their first four-game losing streak since 2006-07 on Wednesday night in their only trip to Houston this season.

Ron Artest’s potential game-winning 3-pointer was blocked as time expired and the Lakers fell to Memphis on Tuesday, 98-96. The Lakers have also dropped close games to Utah (by six points) and Indiana (three points) during the skid. Los Angeles is 0-4 ATS in the past four games, averaging 95.5 PPG during that stretch, well below its 108.7 PPG season average, which ranks second in the NBA behind Phoenix.

The Rockets are among the worst defensive teams in the league (106.4 PPG, fifth-most in NBA), which is good news for L.A. star Kobe Bryant, who is struggling with his shot (42.8% from the field) after missing 16-of-25 on Tuesday night. Bryant had 27 points in the Oct. 26 season-opening victory against the Rockets.

Pau Gasol, who leads the NBA with 15 double-doubles, is averaging 21.1 PPG, 12.1 RPG and 2.1 BPG. However, he’s struggled in his last two contests, going 10-for-28 from the field.

Houston has dropped six of its past eight games (SU and ATS) and has been without Yao Ming for 10 games (bone bruise, left ankle) and Aaron Brooks (sprained left ankle) for 12 games. Neither is expected to play Wednesday night.

Forward Luis Scola has been one of the few bright spots for the Rockets. He’s averaging career-highs in points (20.6 PPG) and rebounds (9.1 RPG) and had 18 points and 16 boards in the October loss at the Staples Center.

Kevin Martin leads Houston in scoring (22.6 PPG) but is shooting only 38 percent (29-of-77) in his past five games.

The Lakers have won three straight against the Rockets, including rallying from a 15-point first-half deficit in the season opener to win, 112-110.

This FoxSheets trend likes the Lakers to win and cover the spread:

Play On - Road favorites (LA LAKERS) - after being beaten by the spread by 24 or more points total in their last three games against opponent after going under the total by 54 or more points total in their last 10 games. (39-16 since 1996.) (70.9%, +21.4 units. Rating = 2*).

The past seven Lakers games and the past four Houston game have all finished Under the total. FoxSheets also likes the Under in this matchup:

Play Under - Road teams where the total is 200 to 209.5 (LA LAKERS) - after failing to cover the spread in 2 or more consecutive games, good team, winning 60-75% or more of their games on the season. (53-23 over the last 5 seasons.) (69.7%, +27.7 units. Rating = 2*).

Purdue looks to shake off Richmond loss at VT

      PURDUE BOILERMAKERS (5-1)

      at VIRGINIA TECH HOKIES (4-2)

      ACC/Big Ten Challenge
      Tip-off: Wednesday, 7:30 p.m. EDT
Line: Virginia Tech -1.5, Total: 132

When you win 23 regular-season games, including 10 games in conference play, and you miss the NCAA Tournament strongly on the basis of playing the 339th-ranked non-conference schedule in basketball, certain games on the docket will earn a big red circle the next season. Next season is here, and it’s time to break out the red sharpie. When Virginia Tech plays host to 22nd-ranked Purdue on Wednesday night, it gains a chance to spiffy up that all-important tournament resume.

Purdue is coming off of an unsettling defeat to a Richmond squad that could surprise many teams before this season is said and done. In losing to the Spiders 65-54, the Boilermakers only shot 30.2% from the field, and 25% from beyond the arc. At one point in the first half, Purdue was only 4-of-18 from the field, and went eight straight possessions without scoring a basket. Equally disturbing for a Matt Painter coached team, was the battering that they took on the glass, where Richmond outrebounded the Boilermakers by a 41-31 margin.

Wednesday’s battle between Purdue center/forward JaJuan Johnson and Tech’s Jeff Allen will be a treat for both fans and NBA scouts to watch. The same can be said for the showdown in the backcourt where Malcolm Delaney leads the Hokies in scoring with 21.3 PPG, and will face a major challenge on both ends of the floor from E’Twaun Moore, who leads Purdue in scoring at 20.8 PPG. Virginia Tech did not have trouble in its last game shooting the basketball, as it hit nearly 49% of its shots from the floor. It was the defense that buried the Hokies, as they allowed UNLV to shoot 53.4% from the field en route to a 71-59 victory over Seth Greenberg’s squad. Throw in 18 turnovers, and a 9-for-21 performance from the FT line and you have a performance worthy of burning the game tapes. Look for the Hokies to embrace an opportunity to bounce back playing in the friendly confines of Cassell Coliseum.

The highly rated FoxSheets like Virginia Tech to cover the spread in a tight contest.

Play Against - Road teams where the line is +3 to -3 (PURDUE) - excellent team - shooting >=45% with a defense of <=42% on the season against opponent after a game where a team made 50% of their 3 point shots or better.

Magic try to stay warm in Chicago

        ORLANDO MAGIC (13-4)

        at CHICAGO BULLS (9-6)

        Tip-off: Wednesday, 8:00 p.m. EDT
        Line: Chicago -1.5, Total: 194

The Magic are feeling good having won eight of the past nine games as they head to Chicago for the first of three Eastern Conference road games. Orlando welcomed back the return of Vince Carter, who missed three consecutive games with a knee injury, as he dropped 13 points in the 90-79 win over Detroit Tuesday night. Jameer Nelson, averaging 14.6 PPG and 6.8 APG, will have a tough defensive matchup against the fresh-legged Derrick Rose. Rose has played beautifully in the past six contests (DNP against Denver, sore neck), with 30.5 PPG to raise his season scoring average to 26.6 (third in NBA). Rose is also eighth in the league in assists with 8.2 APG.

Orlando is 4-2 SU on the road but has not been making bettors happy with a 0-6 ATS road record. Tired legs could be an issue for the Magic Wednesday night in Chicago, where the Bulls are 5-1 SU (3-3 ATS) and have three days of rest under their belt. After a two-week, seven-game road trip (4-3 SU, 6-1 ATS), the Bulls return to United Center where they are 5-1 SU (3-3 ATS). Chicago ended its road trip (due to the circus in town) with a 96-85 win in Sacramento. Wednesday’s matchup will be a fun one in the paint as the second-highest rebounder, Joakim Noah (13.2 RPG) faces the reigning Defensive Player of the Year and fourth-best rebounder, Dwight Howard (12.1 RPG).

Orlando crushed the Bulls by 20 in the last meeting in Chicago, but the series is an even 2-2 (SU and ATS) in Chicago over the past three seasons. Even though the Magic have won five of the last seven overall, the well-rested Bulls look good to win one at home.

        This FoxSheets stat favors Chicago:

Play On - Home teams (CHICAGO) - after successfully covering the spread in 4 or more consecutive games, in a game involving two good teams (60% to 75%). (30-10 over the last 5 seasons.) (75%, +19 units. Rating = 2*).

Just curious-if one adds up all of your plays, wins and losses for the entire season in all sports, are you ahead or behind and by how much if you don't mind my asking?
Hopefully for all your work you can show a profit.

Streaking Celtics look to add to Portland's woes

            PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS (8-9)

            at BOSTON CELTICS (13-4)

            Tip-off: Wednesday, 7:30 p.m. EDT
            Line: Boston -7, Total: 186

Portland has been struggling offensively in the past four games, and Tuesday night was no exception as the Blazers shot a dismal 37 FG Pct. in their 88-79 loss in Philadelphia. With a current four-game losing skid (SU and ATS), Portland is only averaging 86.8 points on 39% FG in the four contests. It will be tough to win with these numbers against the Celtics, who are fourth in the league with 92.9 points allowed. Point guard Andre Miller will have his hands full against the young and quick Rajon Rondo, who is leading the league with 14.1 APG and posted a season-high 23 points, 12 assists, and five boards in their win over the Cavs Tuesday night.

The Blazers have a 4-6 SU away record (2-5-3 ATS) as they try to get a couple wins on the current four-game road trip that wraps up Friday in Washington. Meanwhile, the Celtics are rocking a four-game win streak after a dominating 106-87 victory in Cleveland. Boston has held its last four opponents to 86.8 PPG -- the same offensive average for Portland over the past four contests. Two of the Celtics’ losses were the second meetings of back-to-back games. However, with a 7-1 SU home record (2-5-1 ATS) and averaging 100.8 PPG overall, Boston looks favorable to extend its streak to five against the struggling Blazers.

Boston has won three of the last four meetings, but is only 2-2 ATS against Portland in the past three seasons. The Blazers are 0-6 SU in their past six trips to Beantown.

This FoxSheets stat also favors Boston:

Play Against - Road teams (PORTLAND) - extremely well rested team - playing 3 or less games in 10 days against opponent extremely well rested team - playing only their 2nd game in 7 days. (64-31 over the last 5 seasons.) (67.4%, +29.9 units. Rating = 2*).

No. 1 Duke battles No. 6 Michigan State

              MICHIGAN STATE SPARTANS (5-1)

              at DUKE BLUE DEVILS (6-0)

              ACC/Big Ten Challenge
              Tip-off: Wednesday, 9:30 p.m. EDT
              Line: Duke -11.5

It's impossible not to expect fans to view tonight’s contest between Duke and Michigan State as the coming attraction trailer to the big blockbuster rematch that could take place in April in Houston, host city for the Final Four. But given the way that Duke has looked through its first six games, winning by an average of 28 PPG, scoring an amazing 91.3 PPG, holding opponents to under 39% shooting from the field, if Mike Krzyzewski’s team is playing this well in March, the Lakers may not be able to take them out.

Michigan State certainly got a wake up call last week in the Maui Invitational when then-unranked Connecticut rose up to shock the Spartans en route to winning that tournament. A lackluster 73-55 victory over Tennessee Tech last Sunday did little to ease the ills of Spartans coach Tom Izzo. His eyes were on the stat sheet, which showed the Spartans committing 17 turnovers, and outrebounding its opponent by only a 38-33 margin. If it’s a close game, Michigan State’s paltry 64.7 FT% as a team does not bode well for a squad hoping to pull off the upset at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Duke has won 16 straight games overall dating back to last season, and has won 80 straight games on its home court versus non-conference opponents.

Keep an eye on the backcourt matchup between Duke’s Nolan Smith and Kyrie Irving (31.3 PPG combined) vs. Michigan State’s Kalin Lucas and Durrell Summers (32.7 PPG combined). It may be the best backcourt either combo will face all year. Forward Draymond Green (14.0 PPG, 9.5 RPG, 4.2 APG) is undersized against Duke’s Mason Plumlee (11 PPG, 8.5 RPG), but rest assured, no two big men will be working harder on that floor tonight from start to finish than Green and Plumlee.

This highly-rated FoxSheets trend likes Michigan State to cover the double-digit point spread.

Play On - Underdogs of 10 or more points (MICHIGAN ST) - off a home win against opponent off a road win scoring 85 or more points. (50-16 over the last 5 seasons.) (75.8%, +32.4 units. Rating = 4*).

UNLV looks for 7-0 start at Illinois State

                UNLV REBELS (6-0)

                at ILLINOIS STATE (5-1)

                Mountain West/Missouri Valley Challenge
                Tip-off: Wednesday, 8:00 p.m. EDT
                Line: UNLV -9.5

UNLV opened last season with seven straight victories. The No. 23 Rebels can duplicate that feat on Wednesday night against an Illinois State team that has won three straight games.

UNLV returns its top three scorers from last season's NCAA Tournament team in Tre'Von Willis, Chace Stanback and Oscar Bellfield. Willis led the team with 17.2 PPG last season, but is only averaging 8.5 PPG this year after a tumultuous offseason marred by a domestic incident and subsequent two-game suspension. However, he did have his best game of the young season with 14 points on Sunday in a 71-59 win against Virginia Tech in the 76 Classic tournament title game. Stanback won the tourney’s most outstanding player after scoring 17 points and adding eight rebounds in the final game. He is averaging 17.2 PPG and 4.2 RPG for the season. The Rebels have outscored their opponents by 19.7 PPG this season. UNLV ranks third in the nation in shooting (55.1% FG) and is also among the nation’s stingiest defenses, allowing just 34.9% FG.

Illinois State defeated Jacksonville State, 60-47, on Sunday to win the Global Sports Roundball Classic. Unlike UNLV, the Redbirds lost their top three scorers from last season's 22-11 squad. Jackie Carmichael is the top returning scorer. He averaged 6.8 PPG last season, but has increased his average to an 11.8 PPG clip this season. However, he failed to score in 19 minutes against Jacksonville State. Carmichael and Austin Hill (10.5 PPG, 2.2 RPG, 2.2 APG) are the only two players on the team who are in double-digits in scoring. Despite its 5-1 SU record, Illinois State is just 1-4 ATS.

If the Redbirds are to pull off the upset, they’ll have to do something they haven’t done in 23 seasons: beat a ranked opponent. Illinois State has lost 20 straight to ranked teams, with its last win coming against No. 14 Iowa on Dec. 29, 1987.

UNLV is 2-1 all-time against the Redbirds, but the teams’ most recent meeting came in 1978 in Las Vegas. The Rebels lost their only visit to Normal, Ill. in 1977, 88-84.

This FoxSheets trend likes UNLV to win and cover the spread:

Play Against - Home underdogs of 3.5 to 9.5 points (ILLINOIS ST) - after failing to cover 3 of their last 4 against the spread against opponent after having covered 2 of their last 3 against the spread. (107-60 over the last 5 seasons.) (64.1%, +41 units. Rating = 2*).

SDSU looks for payback against Saint Mary's

                  SAINT MARY’S (CA) GAELS (6-1)

at SAN DIEGO STATE AZTECS (6-0)

                  Tip-off: Wednesday, 10:30 p.m. EDT
                  Line: San Diego State -6

San Diego State is closing in on the best start in school history (8-0 in 2006-07), but to continue on that path, the Aztecs will need to beat the team that handled them with ease last season.

SDSU already has one win against an elite WCC team in Gonzaga. It will look for another when it hosts Saint Mary’s on Wednesday night. The Gaels hope for a repeat of last season’s success when they crushed the Aztecs at home, 80-58. San Diego State was held to a season-worst 35.7 percent shooting in that matchup.

Kawhi Leonard leads the Aztecs in points (18.0) and rebounds (10.5), but he was limited to only four points in the loss to Saint Mary’s. Leonard had 14 points and six rebounds in a season-low 23 minutes in a win over NAIA opponent San Diego Christian 88-69 Friday. Malcolm Thomas (8.3 PPG, 6.3 RPG) was one of three Aztecs who scored in double-digits at Saint Mary’s last season (D.J. Gay and Billy White -- with 10 points each – were the others). Thomas finished that game with 14 points and eight rebounds. SDSU is near the top of the nation in field-goal shooting at an impressive 53.6% this season.

The Gaels won their first six games by an average margin of 34.2 points, but they lost to BYU in the South Padre Island Invitational championship game 74-73 on Saturday, when Cougars star Jimmer Fredette hit a game-winning three-pointer with 10 seconds left. Saint Mary’s had 17 turnovers and just eight assists while allowing the Cougars to shoot 53.8% from the field.

Saint Mary’s features a balanced offensive lineup, led by Mickey McConnell‘s 14.4 PPG. He is one of five players who is averaging double-digit scoring for the Gaels. Rob Jones (13 PPG, 6.0 RPG), Tim Williams (12.6 PPG, 7.6 RPG), Matthew Dellavedova (11.4 PPG, 6.1 APG) and Clint Steindl (10.3 PPG, 3.7 RPG) are the others. Like SDSU, Saint Mary’s is also shooting at a blistering rate from the floor this year (52.1%), and is outrebounding opponents by 11.0 RPG.

McConnell scored a team-best 24 points against San Diego State last season.

Will there be an encore from last season? The Aztecs will be plenty motivated, so expect another close game between the two rivals.

This FoxSheets five-star trend likes Saint Mary’s to cover the spread:

ST MARYS-CA is 14-1 ATS (+12.9 Units) after 3 consecutive non-conference games over the last 2 seasons. The average score was ST MARYS-CA 85.8, OPPONENT 62.8 - (Rating = 5*).

NBA betting slate finds Bobcats at Hornets

The Charlotte Bobcats might be missing their top two scorers when they travel to New Orleans for a Wednesday night matchup against the Hornets.

Starting forward Gerald Wallace, who leads the team in rebounding and is second in scoring, is “questionable” with shoulder injury. Leading scorer Stephen Jackson was tossed out of the club's last game and could be facing a suspension.

Wallace, an all-star last season, was hurt while getting fouled on a drive to the basket as Charlotte trailed by two points with 7.1 seconds left in their last game against the Milwaukee Bucks. Wallace couldn't continue, and the Bucks chose Kwame Brown to come off the bench and take the foul shots. He missed the first attempt to preserve Milwaukee's lead.

The Bobcats eventually suffered a 104-101 setback, but did manage to cover as 3 ½-point road underdogs. The loss was Charlotte’s third in the last four games and lowered the club’s record to 6-11. However, the Bobcats did improve to 8-7-2 against the NBA spread.

The combined 205 points sailed well above the 182 ½-point closing total. That enabled the ‘over’ to improve to 6-3 in the Bobcats’ first nine road encounters and 10-7 in their first 17 overall outings.

The Bobcats played most of the game without Jackson (18.1 PPG), who was tossed out of the contest for arguing with referee Eli Roe with 7:31 remaining in the first quarter.

Larry Brown’s Bobcats are 23rd offensively (96.6 PPG) and 11th defensively (97.5 PPG). They are fifth in field goal percentage (47.2 percent) and first in defensive rebounding (37.1 per game).

New Orleans is off Monday's 95-89 setback at Oklahoma City as 3 ½-point road underdogs. The loss and non-cover lowered the club's ledger to 12-5 SU and 9-7-1 ATS. However, the Hornets are just 2-7-1 ATS in their last 10 outings after starting the season by covering their first five matches. They have also dropped four of their last five after starting the season with a sparkling 11-1 SU ledger.

The combined 184 points slithered below the 200 ½-point closing total, leaving the 'under' 2-7-1 in the Hornets' last 10 encounters. New Orleans has failed to reach triple-digits in eight of those last 10 contests.

The scoring slump has left the Hornets a dismal 26th in the league offensively, averaging just 96.1 points per game. However, they are third in the league from beyond the three-point line by shooting 38.2 percent. The Hornets are also a poor 24th in rebounding, hauling down just 40.3 boards per contest.

Luckily, the squad's defense has more than picked up the slack. The Hornets own the league's top-rated defense, allowing just 92.4 points per game. They have not allowed more than 100 points in 15 of their first 17 games and have yielded less than 90 points on six occasions.

David West led the Hornets in Monday's loss with 20 points and seven rebounds, while point guard Chris Paul added 17 points and 14 assists. Emeka Okafor contributed 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Returning home will be a good thing for the Hornets, as they are 7-1 SU and 5-3 ATS in their first eight home encounters. The 'over' has also cashed in their last four home contests.

The Hornets are a sizzling 10-2 ATS in the last 12 series matchups against the Bobcats, including 6-0 ATS in the last six meetings in New Orleans. The 'over' is 8-2 in the last 10 overall meetings.

The Hornets will head back to Charlotte for a Friday contest against the New Jersey Nets, while New Orleans will stay home for a Friday tussle with the New York Knicks.

NHL betting battle brings Bruins to Philadelphia

The Boston Bruins and Philadelphia Flyers are have been battling each other for 44 years now. The two will meet in NHL betting action for the first time this season in the City of Brotherly Love on Wednesday night (4 p.m. PT).

The B's are slumping, having lost four of their last five overall. The distance between them and the Montreal Canadiens is starting to get a bit wider than they bargained for. Boston is five points back in the standings at this point, and with 26 points in 22 games, would just barely be in the playoffs in the Eastern Conference if the second season started today.

Tim Thomas has been fantastic in net all season long, posting an 11-2-1 record with a 1.56 GAA and .951 save percentage, but he badly needs some help from the men in front of him. The Bruins have only netted one goal in their last two games, and have had nine bagels in periods put on the board over the last four games, something that clearly will not cut it to beat the Flyers on Wednesday.

Both David Krejci and Jordan Caron are dealing with the flu right now and might be out of action all week. If that's the case, it will mean even more pressure on me like Milan Lucic and Nathan Horton, who are first and second on the team respectively in points at 19 and 18.

The pessimist would say that the Flyers have lost two games in a row and have let the Pittsburgh Penguins back into a tie in the Atlantic Division after holding a commanding lead just a few weeks ago. The optimist would say that the only reason that happened is because the Pens have won seven straight and have played more games in that stretch than Philly has, and there is nothing to worry about for the Flyers, as they have taken at least one point from five in a row.

Though the offense sputtered over these last two games against the Calgary Flames and New Jersey Devils, the unit has largely done its job since getting shut out by the Canadiens back on November 16. Even with scoring just three goals in these two shootout losses, the Flyers are averaging an even 4.0 GPG since that point.

Brad Richards, the captain of the team, leads Philadelphia with 25 points, but he has been held to just one assist in his last three games without a goal. There aren't many teams that can say that they have three players in double digits for goals already this year, especially when you consider the fact that Richards isn't one of them.

Claude Giroux, Jeff Carter and Daniel Briere are all on pace for over 40 strikes this year, as they all have at least 11 goals on the season.

The Flyers have some great NHL trends in their corner in this one. They are 12-2 in their last 14 tries against teams from the Northeast Division, and they are 20-7 in their last 27 played at Wells Fargo Arena.

Last season, these two met in the playoffs, and that's when the Bruins collapsed after going up 3-0 in the series, only to lose in seven games thanks to three one goal losses. In fact, six of the seven games in that series were determined by a goal or fewer, and it would be a sin to think that there would be any other result than another very close encounter in this hockey betting bash on Wednesdsay.
