College football opening line report: Week 14

The Auburn Tigers sure did throw everyone for a loop last week, didn’t they? For a half vs. Alabama, they made the oddsmakers look like geniuses, the stars out in Las Vegas who made this undefeated, second-ranked club an underdog.

Auburn couldn’t do a thing right and it appeared as if the Crimson Tide would cruise.

But, then a funny thing happened along the way to a season in ruin. The Tigers woke up. They stood up. They realized the opportunity they had in front of them. And with their fierce rally that eventually broke down the mighty Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa, Ala., they maintained their position in the fight for the BCS national title game.

Wouldn’t you know it: In just a span of a few hours on Friday, the whole BCS picture became just a little more clear. Boise State was gone. But Auburn remained.

“Our whole team has an opportunity and a great challenge to improve,” Auburn coach Gene Chizik said. “That's going to be a great challenge for our whole team."

Well, so far, so good. But here comes the hard part, the next level. Here comes the primary reason why so many critics of the non-BCS schools fall back on the traditional powers when it comes to deciding just who belongs and who doesn’t in college football’s most elite class. Here you have a Top Two team, that just defeated its biggest rival, and just completed a perfect regular season in what many people believe is the nation’s toughest conference.

And what do you have to do for an encore? Oh, not much, just beat South Carolina in the SEC title game in Atlanta.

“If we're lucky enough to win the SEC Championship,” Chizik said, “then we'll be playing for (the national championship).”

Simple in words, sure. Difficult, oh so difficult, in reality.

So, knowing that, and understanding what Auburn just accomplished last week – not to mention digesting the Cam Newton Controversy along the way – just what do those Las Vegas oddsmakers think this week? What do they make of the Tigers now that they are still unbeaten, still in the mix for the title game, and still on the national radar?

“We sent out Auburn -5 vs. South Carolina," said Pete Korner of the Sports Club in Las Vegas. "They were very impressive last week."

But, keep in mind, because of the SEC title game's marquee power, there figures to be a lot of action on both sides. As strong as Auburn looked in the second half vs. Alabama, there will still be some doubters.

“It's always a big game down in Atlanta," Korner said. "We'll see what happens."

And with that, let’s take a look at some other essential Week 14 games, and the opening opinion being generated out in Las Vegas:

    Oregon (-17) at Oregon State

"This is a tough one," Korner said. "We had to go high, just look at what Oregon's done lately. So, we set it at 17. That said, we expect it to drop lower as the week goes on."

    Arizona State (+3) at Arizona

This is an underrated rivalry, to begin with, but one that has a little more juice this year, as the Sun Devils are still in the hunt for bowl eligibility. But the Wildcats, at home, will be more than hungry to make up for last week's disaster at Oregon.

    UConn (+2) at South Florida

Just goes to show you what Las Vegas thinks of the Huskies, who are one win away from securing the Big East title and a BCS berth. All that may be well and good for UConn, but the books still like the athletic Bulls, who are coming off an upset at Miami.

    Rutgers (+20) at West Virginia

Name your score here, as the Scarlet Knights -- please see Friday's no-show vs. Louisville -- have thrown in the towel on the season. The Mountaineers can still steal the Big East title, so expect West Virginia to be more than pumped for this season finale.

    Nevada (-15) at Louisiana Tech

Hangover city? Perhaps, but Nevada will have to get the benefit of the doubt … for the time being. There has to be a letdown of some sort, but one would think there is enough offense on this team to overcome the rust by game's end.

Utah State (+45) at Boise State

The Boise Bounceback? Well, the BCS may be gone, and the national publicity, as well, but the Broncos still have one last chance to make bettors happy. This one is at home, on Senior Day, and it could get real ugly, real fast.

Florida State (+6) vs. Virginia Tech

The Hokies are expected to be here, and are playing their best football of the season. The Seminoles, thanks to Maryland upsetting N.C. State, are a bit fortunate to be here, and may be hungover after whipping Florida. Interesting little tilt nonetheless, as giving a near-touchdown to a team as athletic as the Seminoles might be risky.

    Oklahoma (-4) vs. Nebraska

The Sooners are hot, and really gained some confidence the past two weeks, defeating Baylor and Oklahoma State. It's not really a surprise that Oklahoma's here, but one has to think that the tough trail to make it here -- considering their midseason slump -- may have taken too much out of the Sooners. We'll see if the Cornhuskers can take advantage.

Underdogs are 4-1-1 vs spread in last six ASU-Arizona games; ASU won three of last five visits to Tucson (dogs 4-2 vs spread in last six played here). Wildcats lost last three games, giving up 38 ppg- they covered one of last six tries as a favorite, and lost two of last three at home SU. ASU covered six of last seven games, scoring 33+ points in three of their last four; Sun Devils are 5-1-1 vs spread as underdog this year. ASU is +2 in turnovers in last four games, after being -9 in first seven. Four of last five Arizona games went over the total.

              Friday's games
Fresno State (+2) went to Champaign and upset Illinois 53-52 LY, even though they were outgained by 132 yards; Bulldogs are -5 in turnovers last four games; they're 2-2 as underdog this year, 1-0 at home. Bulldogs had Fresno by the throat here three weeks ago, but lost 35-34, game that looks a lot better now that Wolf Pack upset Boise. Illinois had bye last week, after crushing Northwestern at Wrigley Field; average total in last five Illini games is 77.8 (helped by an OT game). Illinois is 3-2 as a fave this season, but lost three of four on road, winning only at Penn State. Last five Illinois games all went over the total.

Northern Illinois won its last nine games (8-1 vs spread); they're 3-1 as road favorite this year, winning away games by 11-36-7-38-68 points. NIU scored 195 points in its last three games. Huskies didn't face Miami this year, but they won 27-22 (-11.5) in Oxford LY, running punt back for TD, which offset Miami's 75-yard edge in total yardage. Red Hawks won last four games, allowing 11.8 ppg; they're 3-3 as underdog so far this year. Keep in mind Miami held Florida Gators to 212 total yards in season opener, so they have some ability, but Northern Illinois has been killing people. Under is 6-0-1 in Miami's last seven games.

Arizona State at Arizona (-5.5, 55)

                QB SHUFFLE

When a concussion sidelined Arizona State quarterback Steven Threet early in last week’s game, things didn’t look good for the Sun Devils.

Then, backup Brock Osweiler took the field.

Osweiler and the Sun Devils travel to Arizona to renew their rivalry Thursday night. Osweiler will look to build on his remarkable relief appearance against UCLA last week.

About the only one who wasn’t shocked with Osweiler’s performance on Friday was the sophomore quarterback himself. He threw for 380 yards and four touchdowns, hitting 27 of 36 attempts as Arizona State stomped UCLA 55-34 at Tempe, Ariz.

While Threet, who suffered a minor concussion, may be cleared to play during the week, he is expected to serve as the backup.

Osweiler is a specimen. At 6-8, 242 pounds, Osweiler was one of the nation’s top recruits coming out of high school at Montana. He also ran the ball six times for 35 yards and a 15-yard touchdown. Threet had been solid during the season passing for 2,545 yards with 18 touchdowns against 16 interceptions.

Osweiler was expected to get the call before the season started but Threet won the job in the preseason. Last year Osweiler started a game against Oregon but had to leave after throwing just 14 passes with a shoulder injury.

                BOWL A NO-GO?

Despite Arizona State’s win last week, the Sun Devils were eliminated from the bowl picture. While the Pac-10 has six slots in bowl games reserved heading into the final weekend, only three teams have qualified.

Even though Arizona State (5-6, 3-5) could get to six wins with a victory over Arizona on Saturday, it has two wins against FCS schools. The Sun Devils could have still received a bowl berth with a win if it received a waiver from the NCAA but when Georgia knocked off Georgia Tech on Saturday night the Bulldogs became the 70th team to become bowl eligible.

That left Arizona State out of the picture. Although the Arizona Republic is reporting ASU has submitted a request to the NCAA Legislative Relief committee to try to gain postseason eligibility. The Pac-10, of course, is backing the Sun Devils’ request.

The Wildcats are looking at a possible Alamo Bowl or Holiday Bowl berth against a Big 12 team in the postseason. They’re also looking to snap a three-game losing skid.

                BAD AGAINST THE BEST

The Wildcats have faced the iron of the Pac-10 recently and lost games at Oregon and Stanford and were upset at home by USC.

Arizona couldn’t keep up with the top-ranked Ducks in last week’s 48-29 setback. Arizona led throughout much of the first half but when Oregon got its high-powered offense rolling the game was over. Nick Foles threw for 448 yards in the loss and three touchdowns, but the Wildcats got little from its running game which totaled just 58 yards.

"We had 500 yards of total offense," Arizona tailback Nic Grigsby said, "but we can't play against the refs and them, too."

After losing three straight in the series, Arizona has won the past two games, including a 31-10 win at home two years ago.

Arizona is ranked 32nd in the nation in scoring defense, but that number has dropped steadily since entering the most difficult part of its schedule. Foles has the Wildcats’ passing game ranked ninth in the nation.

                TRENDS

The under is 15-5 in Arizona State’s last 20 road games and Arizona is 15-7 ATS in its last 22 home games.

The Sun Devils are 4-0-1 ATS in their last five games against winning teams while the Wildcats are 8-17 ATS in their last 25 home games vs. a team with a losing road record.

Arizona is 4-2 SU and 3-3 ATS in home games this year. Despite interchanging QB's, the Wildcats are averaging 314 YPG through the air, 9th best in the nation. Northern Illinois Huskies vs. Miami (Ohio) Redhawks (+17.5, 55)

Friday Night football comes to a conclusion with the MAC Championship game at Ford Field in Detroit. MAC West Champ, Northern Illinois, is listed as a 17.5-point favorite over MAC East Champ, Miami (Ohio).

Before placing a wager on either team, here is some info that bettors need to know.

                    Why Northern Illinois will cover

The Huskies finished up MAC play with a perfect 8-0 record and they did so by blowing out the opposition by an average of 35.6 points. Northern Illinois also kept backers happy by posting a 7-0-1 ATS record during conference play.

The offense has been explosive, averaging 39.2 points per game this season and an incredible 65 points per game in their last three. All of this is aided by their star running back Chad Spann, who has rushed for 1239 yards and 20 touchdowns this year.

However, what is key for bettors is the Huskies’ defense. They rank 16th in that nation in points allowed at 18.5 per game and will be going up against a less-than-impressive offense that ranks 85th. Add that to the fact that freshman Austin Boucher will be the Redhawks’ quarterback and this game will only be his third career start.

The No. 23 ranked Huskies are another level compared to the rest of the MAC this season. They will put up points and prevent the Redhawks from getting them. Riding on the momentum from their Top-25 ranking and nine-game winning streak, head coach Jerry Kill will look for the “Kill”, before heading towards Northern Illinois’s third straight bowl game.

                    Why Miami (Ohio) will cover

If there was an NCAA comeback of the year award, the Redhawks would definitely win it after going a brutal 1-11 record in 2009.

This year, the Redhawks’ wins haven’t been pretty, but the fact remains that they have been winning. The MAC East Champs posted a decent 7-1 conference record and should put in a decent fight against Northern Illinois.

Since starting QB Zac Dysert got injured, Miami (Ohio) has been playing the possession game, averaging 35 minutes to 25 with new QB Austin Boucher at the helm. They have been utilizing running back Thomas Merriweather, who rushed for 323 total yards in those two games. Keep in mind that he has only 736 yards this season, so the change in emphasis is obvious.

This is good news for Miami (Ohio) backers. Northern Illinois will have to contend with the clock, making an 18-point victory or higher very difficult.

History also favors the Redhawks in spite of the fact that they haven’t beat Northern Illinois since 1998. Miami (Ohio) was an underdog in the last three contest, but it covered in all three, losing by just an average of four points. In last year’s matchup, Miami (Ohio) came back from a 17-point deficit and nearly pulled off an upset in a 27-22 loss.

                    The total and line movement

The total opened as low as 51.5 points at most books but has now moved up to 55. Miami has been one of the best under bets this year going 2-10 over/under while Northern Illinois games have gone over the number eight times out of 12.

Last year’s matchup between these two had a pretty accurate total, with the game going over by just four points.

The spread has actually seen significant movement, already moving 2.5 point from its opening line of 15.

Auburn Tigers vs. South Carolina Gamecocks (+5.5, 61)

The 19th renewal of the SEC Football Championship game kicks off when No. 1 ranked Auburn takes on No. 18 South Carolina at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta Saturday afternoon.

                        Free at last

He's the best player in the game today. And he'll be a deserving Heisman winner, too.

Best of all, he will be taking snaps under center Saturday.

After a month of intensive investigation by the NCAA, Auburn QB Cam Newton was cleared to play in Saturday’s SEC title game, but not without sour grapes from other top college football dignitaries around the country.

"I was always told the parent is the child," USC AD Pat Haden said. "That's what we've been telling our kids. If the parent does something inappropriate, the child suffers the consequences."

                        Home away from home

Auburn is only 100 miles up Interstate 85 from Atlanta.

The Atlanta area is a drawing card for students, alumni and potential football players. And its position as the capital of the football-crazy South means Auburn coaches make frequent trips to Atlanta and its suburbs to hunt and recruit players.

"Atlanta is so close," Auburn coach Gene Chizik told reporters. "Being able to get to Atlanta is every team's goal in this league every year. It's a huge recruiting base. It's a huge inspiration for our guys who are from that area to be able to go back."

Among the dozen scholarship players from greater Atlanta, several have starring roles on this year's team.

Newton comes from College Park, running back Mario Fannin is from Hampton and receiver Darvin Adams finished high school in Kennesaw.

On the line, Byron Isom is from Jonesboro and tight end Philip Lutzenkirchen, who caught the winning pass in the Iron Bowl, comes from Marietta. Starting defensive back Neiko Thorpe is from Tucker.

                        Second to one

While South Carolina's offense has become more and more dangerous this year with freshman running back Marcus Lattimore and wide receiver Alshon Jeffery, JR QB Stephen Garcia has provided the arm and legs to put defenses on their heels.

Garcia has come a long way since being pulled in the fourth quarter in Jordan-Hare Stadium when the Gamecocks folded like cheap tent in a 35-27 loss to the Tigers earlier this season.

After leading the Tigers 20-7 in the first half, and 27-21 to start the fourth quarter, the Gamecocks' fourth quarter went: Fumble, fumble, interception, interception. Game over.

In Garcia's next game, against then-No. 1 Alabama, he played the game of his life as South Carolina upset the Crimson Tide.

It marked the first time in 108 years SC defeated a No. 1 ranked opponent.

Garcia is expected to play despite a tender shoulder.

Do it to me one more time

Auburn's 334 rushing yards against South Carolina on September 25 accounted for nearly 30 percent of the rushing yards given up by the Gamecocks during the regular season.

South Carolina held nine of its other 11 opponents to fewer than 100 rushing yards.

Auburn leads the SEC in rushing offense at 291.2 yards per game. South Carolina leads the SEC in rushing defense at 93.2 yards per game.

                        SEC rematches

“It’s hard to beat the same teams twice in the same season”, remains a popular axiom.

There's not much historical precedent for same-season rematches.

Four of the five SEC title game rematches have led to sweeps: Alabama over Florida in 1999, Florida over Auburn in 2000, LSU over Georgia in 2003 and Auburn over Tennessee in 2004. The only split was between Tennessee and LSU in 2001.

Tigers coach Chizik understands the rematch scenario from the perspective of the 2004 season, when he was defensive coordinator and Auburn needed to beat Tennessee for a second time to preserve its unbeaten season.

Though Auburn won by 24 points in Knoxville, it had a hard-fought, 10-point win in Atlanta.

South Carolina boss Steve Spurrier has had more a little experience with rematches.

"I've had some games where, well, back in 2000 we were actually able to beat Auburn a couple of times. In '99, Alabama beat us a couple of times," Spurrier recalled. "And then we were lucky to get a rematch with FSU in the national championship there in '96 and were able to beat them the second time after losing the first. I think it can go either way. You can win both of them or split."

Spurrier went on to extol the virtues of Auburn’s undefeated season saying, "They've been - I wouldn't say the surprise team - but they've been one of the best teams in the country, if not the best team, through the course of the first 12 games.”

                        Chew on this

                        • South Carolina's only victory over Auburn was a 16-14 win in Birmingham on Dec. 2, 1933.

                        • Auburn is the only SEC opponent that South Carolina has not beaten since joining the conference in 1992.

                        • Auburn has won six SEC championships -- 1957, 1983, 1987, 1988 (shared with LSU), 1989 (shared with Alabama and Tennessee) and 2004. In each of those seasons, Auburn defeated Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi State.

                        • South Carolina is the third team to reach the SEC Championship Game with three league losses, joining LSU in 2001 and Arkansas in 2002.

                        • The higher-ranked team in the AP poll has won 12 of the 18 SEC championship games.

                        • The winner of the SEC title game has gone on to win six of the 12 BCS national championship games, including the past four.

                        • Undefeated tams in SEC title games are 5-3 straight up and 3-5 against the spread.

Nebraska Cornhuskers vs. Oklahoma Sooners (-4.5, 53)

No. 13 Nebraska and No. 9 Oklahoma square off Saturday in a Big 12 Championship Game packed with story lines.

This will be last meeting between the longtime conference rivals, who have tangled in some of college football’s most storied games. Nebraska heads to the Big Ten next season and would love nothing more than to scoop up the Big 12’s lucrative BCS bowl bid before jumping ship.

                        Odds

The line opened at -3.5 in favor of OU and was bet up to as high as -6.5 before bettors took a discounted Huskers squad, bring the spread down to its current stand.

The total opened at 54 points and has dropped a points to 53 as of Friday afternoon.

                        Falling stars

The winner of Saturday’s game at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas also moves onto the short list of possible preseason No. 1 candidates for 2011.

Unfortunately for Cornhusker and Sooner fans, they're forced to worry about injuries to their star players.

Nebraska quarterback Taylor Martinez is a game-time decision due to turf toe on his left foot and a right ankle injury. The redshirt freshman practiced Wednesday, but was seen leaving the field with a boot on his right foot.

Martinez got off to an electric start this season, but slowed down the stretch. He missed two games due to injuries, including last week’s win over Colorado. Backups Cody Green and Zac Lee have seen time in Martinez’s absence and helped the Huskers (10-2, 6-2 Big 12) finish with their best regular-season mark in nine seasons. Green has emerged lately and is expected to start if Martinez can’t go.

Oklahoma could be without leading rusher DeMarco Murray, who injured his knee in last week’s win over Oklahoma State. Coach Bob Stoops told the media this week that Murray is improving, but his status is still questionable against Nebraska. Freshman Roy Finch and senior Mossis Madu will be asked to produce on the ground if Murray can’t go.

Even if Martinez and Murray are held out, there will still be plenty of talent on the field. The Cornhuskers have a pair of game-breakers at running back. Roy Helu (1,122 yards, 10 TDs) and Rex Burkhead (822 yards, 7 TDs) lead the nation’s eighth-ranked rushing attack.

Nebraska also boasts the nation’s fifth-best defense, led by cornerback Prince Amukara, one of the top NFL draft prospects at defensive back.

                        Flyin’ Ryan

Amukara will likely be matched up against Oklahoma’s prolific receiver Ryan Broyles, also an NFL prospect. The nation’s leader in receptions per game, Broyles is quarterback Landry Jones’ favorite target and averages 115 receiving yards. Jones passed for 466 yards and four touchdowns against Oklahoma State and spearheads the nation’s fourth-best passing attack.

Defensive end Jeremy Beal, the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, leads the Sooner defense, which has been inconsistent this season. Oklahoma is giving up 152 yards rushing per game. Starting cornerback Jonathan Nelson (concussion) was a full participant in practice for the Sooners and is expected to play.

The Sooners enter the game as touchdown favorites and are shooting for their fourth Big 12 title in the last five seasons. They’ll have to perform better than they did in last season’s ugly loss to the Cornhuskers.

Jones threw five interceptions in the 10-3 loss in Lincoln, Neb.

                        Trends

                        • Home team is 6-2 ATS in their last eight meetings.
                        • Under is 5-2 in the last seven meetings.
                        • Favorite is 7-3 ATS in their last 10 meetings.

Virginia Tech Hokies vs. Florida State Seminoles (+3.5, 51.5)

Since a surprising stumble in Week 2, few teams have been as impressive as Virginia Tech, which has reeled off 10 wins a row. An old nemesis, Florida State, aims to halt a Hokies streak – again.

Virginia Tech (10-2, 8-0 ACC) and the Seminoles (9-3, 6-2) meet on Saturday in the ACC Championship Game in Charlotte with an Orange Bowl berth at stake.

                        Odds

The line opened as high as -4.5 in favor of the Hokies, but has been bet down to its current stand. The total has climbed slightly, sitting as high as 52 at some books.

                        Rematch or outmatched?

The teams faced each other in the first ACC title game in 2005 and also met in the national title game in 2000, both won by Florida State. But in recent years, Virginia Tech has become more of a national power while Florida State, after a few mediocre years and a coaching change, is now the upstart. Still, the Seminoles beat Virginia Tech in their last meeting 30-20 two seasons ago.

The No. 11 Hokies are making their fourth trip to the conference championship game. After losing in 2005, they beat Boston College in 2007 and 2008. No. 20 Florida State is making its first return trip to the title game.

Virginia Tech, which lost to Boise State in the season opener and then dropped a stunner to James Madison, has been unbeatable since. The athletic Tyrod Taylor has refined his game to become a complete quarterback, evidenced by him becoming the all-time leading passer for the Hokies. Taylor directs an offense that is averaging nearly 35 points a game.

His counterpart, Christian Ponder, also is a mobile quarterback capable of making big plays. Both have thrown 20 touchdowns on the season and for more than 2,000 yards.

Florida State averages just shy of 32 points a game. Statistically, the teams are extremely close in a number of categories, including scoring, rushing and passing, and the game could down to turnovers, where the edge has to go to the Hokies.

Under coach Frank Beamer, Virginia Tech is known for big plays via special teams and turnovers. They rank second in the nation with 20 interceptions. Taylor has been picked off only four times while Florida State has turned the ball over 20 times, with Ponder throwing eight interceptions.

                        Devil you Nole

Though the Seminoles and rookie head coach Jimbo Fisher are underdogs, they have to be feeling good entering the game. Not only has Florida State won its last three games, including convincing wins over Miami and Maryland, the ’Noles have beaten up on Beamer, who is 1-8 all-time against them.

Virginia Tech’s biggest advantage may be in the running game, where it has a wealth of weapons. Darren Evans leads the team with 748 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns and Taylor isn’t far behind with 613 yards. Sophomore David Wilson is a dangerous threat out of the backfield and on returns.

But against ACC opponents, Florida State allowed just 3.5 yards per carry and the defense has given up an average of 12 points in the last three games. Offensively, Chris Thompson leads the Seminoles’ rushing attack with 687 yards and a gaudy 6.9 average.

Virginia Tech’s 10-game winning streak is its longest since 2000 when it won 12 straight. That streak was broken by Florida State in the Sugar Bowl. The Seminoles are 4-0 against the Hokies at neutral sites.

                        Trends

                        • Seminoles are 4-1 ATS in their last five meetings.
                        • Over is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
                        • Home team is 4-1 ATS in their last five meetings.

Oregon plays for national title with win over rival Oregon State, but the Ducks lost five of last six visits to Corvallis.
