  • Why is it..........

That Phil Steele is like an offensive lineman?? You never hear about him unless he does something bad. That clever little marketer just hung up a second consecutive 3-0 day in the NFL.

I agree with you, Phil. I have been a NCS follower for years, however, and this year is the first year that I have been a little bothered by his use of statistics to cover up his poor year in college football.

He seems to have turned it around, however, and I look forward to a lucrative bowl season. Also hope his pro plays continue to do well!

Thanks for posting, Phil. Much appreciated.

    GL to you.

OK-Since I am one of the folks who in a goodnatured way likes to poke fun at Phil Steele, I want to point out what I personally find irritating about his ways:
First, believe it or not I do have a great deal of respect for his selections and always consider them when deciding on who to bet;I call his comp. line every day as a matter of fact both during football season and in basketball and baseball.
I find the most irritating thing about him are his long 4-5 minute speeches/soliloquies daily extolling his newsletter, his late phone service, the discounted rates for each, blah, blah, blah.
It is like a broken record and he overdoes it;I just leave the phone for 4 minutes or so and come back to to get the freebie;even if I wanted to pay, I would not as I find this practice irritating.
Then, when/if he loses you get another boring taped message which he has said a zillion times before-"You know us here at northcoast-I tell you about the winning days, and unlike those other(evil) services out there, I am right up here telling you when we lose."
In short, it is not what he says but how he says it and repeats
        himself that is irritating.
Then as someone stated we hear about his 10 year record to
cover up any deficiencies he may have in his record this year.
What I personally find most laughable is that when he talks about such items as "bargain" rates of $3500 for his Executive Club and $84 for next year's PowerSweep and then later in season even big discounts, doesn't he realize he is living in a fantasy world?
All of his Powersweep picks, late phone picks, executive service, etc. are available for NOTHING on many sites on the internet,
In my mind in a couple of years when more and more gamblers have computers and learn that his picks as well as every other service's picks are available for free, it won't matter what price he charges, because most services including his will go out of business.
The last thing is more of a comment than criticism, but Phil blabs a lot about all of the information crammed in PowerSweep;some of it is useful but some of it has no bearing on what happens on the field in a given game.
I assure you the big betting syndicates, which have a much better record over time than he does, could give a rat's ass over what third string center fumbled the ball is last year;s game between teams A and B or which player had the flu two years ago, etc.
The syndicates rely on contacts, relevant information and intangibles which are occurring now not in the past.
Phil and his newsletter have no feel for that, and that is where he and lot of services fall short.
I could go on but for sake of brevity let above serve as an indication of my feelings.

          He is outrageously expensive....

...but his newsletter prices are great (Power Sweep).

And he is having a great year in the NFL. And the info is valuable in Power Sweep and his college football preview because you learn how things happened. It does give you some insight. I hear what you're saying about some info being worthless to most, but it does help.

Great job Phil (both Sr and Jr) :D
Please don't question my record or I will leave!!!!

Northcoast's College Preview Magazine is the best one out there that I know of. The Pro Mag is great also.

I would be willing to bet that the most successful gamblers in the world do not need anywhere near the amount of information contained in PowerSweep, some useful and some not, to hit at a very high rate;intuition based on years of gambling, watching the money moves, knowing when the moves mean something and when they do not, etc. are what count.
Surely all the trends, systems, etc. mean something, but in a given weekend as many of those trends will fail as will succeed;the sharp gambler knows how to combine those things cited above with his own knowledge or in may cases actually override them based on the present situation, timing. and overall gut feeling for the game)s) at hand.

His preview issue may be great, but I wonder what relevance it has to the gambler on a given Saturday or Sunday as the season progresses.
Also, it was cited PowerSweep is a bargain, but an even better bargain is for nothing as it is essentially free on the internet;not trying to be sarcastic just realistic.

                  always the same

Easy to remember the losers in anything but forget the winners...
Get beat on a good poker hand and remember forever, but win on a river card and don't remember that..

Thanks for the info, win or lose I appreciate it.

                    Syndicate Plays

                    Savage 1:

I am new to the forum and unfamiliar with the syndicate groups. Could you please explain more about these groups to me? Where did you find out about them and how do they handicap the games? Are their selections available to others? If you could give me any insight it would be great.

I have always thought Phil Steele was a good handicapper. As far as all services going out of business, I doubt that will happen. Even if the old guard (Phil Steele, Marc Lawrence, etc) was to go out of business, people that are now giving away picks for free on forums would start to sell their picks. As much as I like the concept of sharing, nobody is going to give you something for free if others will buy it--and people will always pay if they think it gives them a better chance to win.

Dogpick-you might want to contact your local mafioso for more information about the syndicates. Just kidding.
From my understanding syndicates are groups/individuals betting large amounts of money based on information (don't try to pin me down further as to what this smart info is but some of it is intangible), and most importantly these groups/individuals have been very successful in the past.
You might want to contact Brian Mac(comp. line 513-7842741 or go to www.brianmac.com), as his service is based on following the big syndicate moves;he has been very successful also especially this year.
I sort of disagree with your statement, in that most of people here and at such places
as www.gamblerstalk.com enjoy posting for nothing to help others and to show they are every bit as good if not better than the guys who charge.
I stand by my statement that in next few years that a lot of paid services will go under.
Northcoast over time is alright, but as stated,,Phil Steele excels in marketing and psychology skills, and from his point of view knows how to get the most from his advertising( people like me who can see through the smokescreen not withstanding).

Phil Steele has his NFL GOY this Sunday. His GOY picks in the NFL are 3-1 the last 4 years but his last 17 GOY's are 15-2. He has 4 of these each year (NFL, college, playoff, bowl) and his NFL GOM plays are 8-0 as he did get lucky with Tenn. -6.5 over Atlanta, as the Titans won by 7.

His college picks this year were bad (phone plays and newsletters) but he should be someone to focus on in Nov, Dec. and Jan.

I would agree about listening to his toll free lines and his "spinning instead of winning". If you think he is bad, wait till he has his top assistant on the phone line during basketball season and he mentions the website 5 or 6 times and rambles on about credit card convenience.
NSA's NBA Game Of The Year was on Dallas -4.5 on March 31. Orlando won 108-99. It was a cloudy day for Sonny LaFouchi.

I will admit that if you play Northcoast's big plays only(GOYS), you will do well.

                              Savage:

Thanks for the information. It seems a little odd to me that anyone would be part of a betting syndicate. I mean, obviously there is somebody who is doing the handicapping or analyzing the information and making the final call on the selection for the syndicate. Thus, that person or those persons must effectively either be employed by the syndicates or are selling their selections to the syndicates. I am not sure what the difference would be between them and a service such as Phil Steele. By your description, it sort of sounds like the person that does the handicapping or analyzing of the information for the syndicates is a "service for the mafioso." Is there something that I am missing?

Is there anywhere that I could find Brian Mac's record? If I followed a service I would like to make sure that they win over time and not just have one good season. I didn't see Brian Mac's record on his site, and he does not mention that he is monitored by an independent monitor such as Trackpicks or one of the several other monitors. Brian has some things pertaining to the syndicates on his site, but he does not get into specifics. Do you know how he has an "in" to get the syndicate selections. I would imagine that it would cost a fortune (even more than Northcoast) if they were that good. Additionally, I would think that the syndicates would not take too kindly to him selling the selections over the internet. Just some thoughts. Thanks for the info.
