    Daily Sports Roundup: November 28

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Packers travel to Atlanta to play the Falcons, the Colts do battle with the Chargers in Indianapolis, and the CFL stages its Grey Cup.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

It's Green Bay (7-3 SU, 6-4 ATS) at Atlanta (8-2 SU, 6-4 ATS) in the top NFL matchup on the schedule for Sunday afternoon this week. The Packers are riding high after blasting the rival Vikings 31-3 in Minnesota last weekend. Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers threw for 301 yards with four touchdowns in that easy win over the Vikings, with Greg Jennings catching three scoring passes on the day. The Falcons doubled up on the Rams 34-17 in St. Louis last week, as Matt Ryan passed for 253 yards with a pair of touchdowns. Michael Turner ran for 131 yards and a score for Atlanta in that contest. Oddsmakers like the Falcons a little better at home in this matchup, setting them as slight 1.5-point favorites. The total for the Sunday afternoon contest sits at 47.5.

Elsewhere around the NFL on Sunday it'll be Tennessee at Houston (-6.5), Minnesota at Washington (-1), Jacksonville at the Giants (-7), Pittsburgh (-6.5) at Buffalo, Carolina at Cleveland (-10), Kansas City (-2.5) at Seattle, Miami at Oakland, Philadelphia (-3.5) at Chicago, Tampa Bay at Baltimore (-7.5), and St. Louis at Denver (-4). As well, Indianapolis hosts San Diego on Sunday Night Football. The Colts (6-4 SU, 6-4 ATS) fell 31-28 in New England last week, as Peyton Manning threw for 396 yards and four touchdowns but was picked off three times. The Chargers (5-5 SU, 5-5 ATS) are coming off a 35-14 home win over the Broncos on Monday in which Philip Rivers threw for 233 yards and four scores. Indy is pegged as a 3-point home favorite, with the total at 51.5.

Up north, the Canadian Football League plays its Grey Cup game on Sunday afternoon, with Montreal vs. Saskatchewan in a rematch of last year's championship contest. The Alouettes (12-6 SU, 8-10 ATS in the regular season) blasted Toronto 48-17 at home in the Eastern Final last week, while the Roughriders (10-8 SU, 9-9 ATS in the regular season) are coming off a 20-16 road win over Calgary in the Western Final. Oddsmakers have Montreal set as the 3.5-point favorite on the neutral Edmonton field.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

There are eight games on the NBA's Sunday slate, with Atlanta at Toronto, New York at Detroit, Utah at the Clippers, Oklahoma City at Houston, Portland at New Jersey, Phoenix at Denver, Indiana at the Lakers, and San Antonio at New Orleans. The Spurs have already played the Hornets once this season, losing to them 99-90 at home as a 9-point favorite when they met on October 30. Chris Paul led the New Orleans attack with 25 points in that contest, while David West pitched in with 18 points. Manu Ginobili scored a team-high 23 points for the Spurs, while Tim Duncan was held to seven points.

As well, games involving Top-25 teams on the college hoops schedule for Sunday include Tennessee Tech at No. 2 Michigan State, Arkansas Pine Bluff at No. 11 Missouri, Charleston at No. 25 North Carolina, and No. 16 Florida at Florida State. The Gators (4-1 SU, 0-3 ATS) beat Florida Atlantic 79-66 at home last time out behind 21 points from Kenny Boynton, while the Seminoles (5-0 SU, 2-0 ATS) topped Mercer 79-55 in their most recent game. Xavier Gibson scored 17 points for Florida State that day.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

There are then three games on the ice around the National Hockey League on Sunday, with Columbus at Detroit, Boston at Atlanta, and Carolina at Washington. The Hurricanes and Capitals met in Carolina back on Wednesday night, with Alexander Ovechkin and company picking up a 3-2 road victory. Ovechkin had three assists for the Caps in that victory, while Nicklas Backstrom (with two) and Brooks Laich provided the goals. Semyon Varlamov made 30 saves for Washington in his return to the lineup. Sergei Samsonov and Eric Staal replied for Carolina, and Justin Peters made 35 saves.

Bettors’ best friend: Sunday’s wagering tips

Lines to keep an eye on

The New York Giants opened as an 8.5-point favorite over the Jacksonville Jaguars, but the line has dropped now to 7.5 and even as low as 7 in most shops.

      Who’s hot

NCAAB: Temple is 9-2-1 ATS in their last 12 overall, while the under is 6-0 in Florida’s last six games versus the ACC, when they face Florida State. Florida and FSU have also hit the under in each of their last four meetings.
NHL: Boston is 11-1 in its last 12 games against the Atlanta Thrashers. Boston is also 8-2 in its last 10 road games.
NFL: Tampa Bay is 7-0 ATS in their last seven games as a road underdog.
NBA: The over is 6-1 in San Antonio’s last seven games against the Western Conference.

      Who’s not

NCAAB: New Mexico is just 1-7 ATS in its last eight games.
NHL: Carolina is 1-8 in its last nine games when facing a team with a winning record.
NFL: Houston is 0-4 ATS in its last four home games.
NBA: Indiana is 1-6 ATS in its last seven games against the Lakers in Los Angeles.

      Key Stat

18-1: Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan has a career record of 18-1 when playing at the Georgia Dome.

      Injuries that shouldn’t be overlooked

Jacksonville Jaguars left tackle Eugene Monroe will miss Sunday’s game against the New York Giants. He joins starting right tackle Eben Britton on the sidelines, leaving the likelihood that undrafted rookie Kevin Haslem gets to face Osi Umenyiora and Justin Tuck. Jags running back Maurice Jones-Drew is dealing with an abdominal injury – it might get ugly.

      Biggest Game on the slate

Green Bay Packers (7-3) against the Atlanta Falcons (8-2) as a potential NFC Championship preview.

      Notable Quotable

"The challenge I have before me is to make sure that we're going in the right direction and at the end of the year we're not a 3-13 team. I don't think there's anybody on our team that can stand back and say, 'You know what? I've done my part. I'm not the reason we're 3-7.' And if we have a guy like that, that guy has been a selfish individual.” – Minnesota Vikings interim head coach Leslie Frazier on his mindset before his first game after replacing Brad Childress.

      Tips and notes

The NFL fined the Denver Broncos and head coach Josh McDaniels each $50,000 for improper taping of opponent’s practices, similar to that of the New England Patriots’ 2006 “Spygate.” It’s a perfect distraction to arise one day before their matchup against the St. Louis Rams.

Washington Capitals goaltender Semyon Varlamov posted a 6-0 shutout victory over the red-hot Tampa Bay Lightning Friday. He has won both his starts since returning from a groin injury and he now has a .928 save percentage and 1.88 goals-against average in four starts this year.

New York Knicks center Ronny Turiaf left Saturday’s game against Atlanta after re-aggravating his left knee injury. The Knicks are 0-3 in games where Turiaf does not play.

        **********************************

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college sports Saturday

        13) Oklahoma State is 10-2; they scored 41 points in both losses. Last night, Oklahoma was an incredible 16-27 on 3rd down conversions. Had never seen a team have 27 third down plays in one game before.

        12) Georgia/UL-Monroe both lost rivalry games because they missed extra points when down a point in the last 5:00. They're college kids, so nothing is automatic. Just ask Boise State.

        11) If you're looking for a Cinderella team for next March, don't think Butler; the Bulldogs lost at home to Evansville Saturday. You could be thinking Richmond; the Spiders upset Purdue in Chicago Saturday.

        10) BYU frittered away their rivalry game with Utah, after leading 13-0 after three quarters; Utes won 17-16, in last game between the two as conference rivals. Next year, rivalry moves to 3rd week in September, and it'll never carry as much weight, with Utah in the Pac-10.

        9) Can you imagine what offseason conditioning workouts are going to be like at Texas, after Longhorns had their first losing season since '97?

        8) North Texas ran kick back for TD on last play of third quarter, then Kansas State ran the ensuing kick back for a TD. Doesn't happen much. K-State fell behind early, but left Denton with a 49-41 win.

        7) Vanderbilt fired their interim coach; rumor has them going for one of the Navy assistants, and employing Paul Johnson's option system with the resource-challenged Commodores. It does makes some sense, just like the service academies use an option attack to stay competitive.

        6) Tennessee was 2-6, Georgia was 1-4; both finished 6-6 and will be taking up one of the 70 bowl slots next month. Why? Because they'll being a ton of fans with them, and bowls are all about making money.

        5) Looks like Oklahoma-Nebraska will play in the last-ever Big 12 title game next week in JerryWorld; since Cornhuskers are leaving conference for the Big 11. Sooners-Huskers was a huge rivalry before it was ended by the Big 12's divisional setup; teams didn't meet this season.

        4) Michigan State capped off a hell of a season, winning at Penn State for first time since 1965. Coach Dantonio should feel like Coach of the Year no matter if he gets award or not, since he survived a heart attack the night his Spartans beat Notre Dame on a fake FG in overtime.

        3) Last Saturday night in Anchorage, Arizona State led St John's by 10 at the half in the finals of the Alaskan Shootout, but St John's rallied in the second half, using their superior quickness to pull away from the Sun Devils 67-58. Four of Red Storm's first five games were out west. Key play in the game was a forced 3-pointer St John's banked in as the shot clock expired that seemed to break Arizona State's back.

        2) So Miami Hurricanes fired Randy Shannon Saturday night; he had a 28-22 record with the 'canes, but cleaned up the program, with only one player arrested in his four years as coach. So much for that; given the choice of cleaning up the program or winning, always choose winning.

        1) If you don't believe me, think about this: Shannon got fired last night, but Bruce Pearl remains employed, after he got caught red-handed lying to the NCAA, then trying to cover it up. But he wins, so who cares? I'm not judging, I'm just saying, thats the reality of the situation.

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Atlanta Hawks at Toronto Raptors (+1, 203.5)

The new-look Toronto Raptors were able to sneak out a push against the Boston Celtics, losing 110-101 to the Celtics as 9-point road underdogs Friday.

Recent additions Peja Stojakovic and Jerryd Bayless combined for 20 points, five assists and six rebounds, however, the Raptors lost starting forward Reggie Evans to a broken foot that could keep him out of action for a while.

“I feel bad for Reggie because he’s been playing very well,” head coach Jay Triano told the Toronto Sun. “As a team, we’ve got guys who are ready.

“We’ve talked about our depth and now it’s time for the guys to step up.”

Evans, an athletic scrapper under the rim, leads Toronto in rebounds and steals per game while playing hard-nosed defense in the paint. He would have been essential to stopping Hawks forward Josh Smith, who scored 17 points and grab 10 rebounds the last time he faced Toronto.

The Raptors have gone 4-0-1 ATS in their last five games but have only covered in three of their last 10 contests with the Hawks.

                        Pick: Atlanta

Indiana Pacers at Los Angeles Lakers (-8.5, 199)

The Pacers are running the gauntlet of NBA superstars in recent games.

Indiana took down Dwight Howard and the Orlando Magic last weekend, beat LeBron James and the Miami Heat Monday, fell in overtime to Kevin Durant and the Oklahoma City Thunder Friday and now head to Los Angeles to face Kobe Bryant and the World Champion Lakers.

Indiana has managed to bring a 4-1 ATS mark out of its last five games, with wins and covers over the hapless Cavaliers and Clippers in that stretch. Defense is getting the job done for the Pacers. They’ve held their last five opponents to an average of just over 89 points and would have played under in all five of those outings if not for Friday’s overtime.

“We’re actually focusing on it now,” forward Danny Granger told reporters of the team’s defense. “We’re not scoring like we have in the past as far as points a game, but we’re putting a lot of work in on the defensive end. We’re stepping up, we’re rebounding well and doing things we haven’t done in the past.”

Indiana is just 2-2 ATS in its last four meeting with Los Angeles, but its new dedication to defensive should keep the covers coming from Pacers backers.

                        Pick: Indiana

                            College Basketball Knowledge
LSU is 3-2, losing by 9 to Memphis on neutral court; they also lost at home to Nicholls State, a red flag- this is first road game of year for club with four starters back from LY's 11-20 debacle. South Alabama is 1-2 vs D-I teams, losing by 35-24 points. SEC single digit road favorites are 3-2 vs spread. Sun Belt home underdogs are 1-2-1.

Home side won six of last seven Florida-Florida State games, as Gators lost last three visits here by 2-4-13 points. First road game for Florida team that is 4-1, beating four stiffs, losing by 18 to Ohio State. State is 5-0, with two easy road wins. ACC home favorites are 8-5 against the spread. SEC single digit road underdogs are 6-3 against the number.

3-0 Northwestern hasn't played in nine days; they also haven't beaten anyone good yet. Wildcats are playing this game to spruce up what has been a perenially weak non-league schdule- they've got four starters back from LY's 20-14 team. Crieghton is 4-1, losing only road game at Iowa State on 3-pointer at buzzer. MVC single digit road underdogs are 6-5.

Quick turnaround for Siena after winning first conference game Friday at Rider; Saints are 3-2 with both wins on road. Princeton lost three of last four games, with two losses other than the Duke blowout by total of 3 points. Tigers have three starters back from 22-9 team. MAAC favorites are 5-5, 1-1 on road. Ivy League underdogs are 6-8, 1-1 at home.

North Carolina was 11-3 last year before losing 82-79 at Charleston in OT; they went on to stumble to 9-14 finish, and are still struggling at 3-2 this year, losing to Vandy/Minnesota. Charleston is 4-2, losing by point at Maryland, by 9 to Rhode Island. Southern Conference road underdogs are surprising 16-7 vs spread so far this year.

Orlando tournament- Teams in this tournament and the Anaheim event played Thursday/Friday but had yesterday off.

Temple is 3-1, allowing only 55 ppg; both their games here were won by 7 points. Other than Randall's 4-6 effort Friday, Owls are 4-27 behind the arc in this event. Texas A&M is 4-1, losing to BC by bucket in first round. Returning starting G Harris is 0-7 from floor this weekend. A-14 teams are 3-6 if spread is less than 4. Big 12 teams are 1-3.

Cal held Temple to 50 points in 1st round, then was down 21-5 at half in 57-44 loss to Notre Dame Friday; Bears lost their top four scorers on LY's team, so they're rebuilding. Boston College nipped A&M by hoop in 1st round, then lost by 10 to Wisconsin- they've got four starters back from LY, but have very little depth. Home loss to Yale is red flag.

Manhattan is awful, scoring total of 80 points in losing first two games here by 15-29 points, shooting 29-31% from floor- they also lost by 11 to LIU. Not good. Georgia is working injured star Tompkins back into lineup; they lost 1st round game here in double OT, then lost to Temple by 7. MAAC road underdogs are 9-12 against the spread.

Wisconsin is 4-1, with four wins by 10+ points, allowing 53.2 ppg; only loss was by 3 at good UNLV team. Badgers have only 11 turnovers in two games this weekend, but are just 8-37 from arc, very un-Badger like. Notre Dame is better defensively this year without lumbering Harangoty in middle; they held Cal to five points in first half of 57-44 win Friday.

                            Anaheim tournament
DePaul was down 24 at half to Northridge (middle of road in Big West) Friday; they're 5-35 from arc in two games here, losing by 4-24. Young Stanford (7 freshmen, 0 seniors) scored 52-53 points in losing first two games here; they've got four starters back from LY, but miss departed star Fields. Pac-10 road favorites are 4-6 against the spread.

Tulsa is 3-2, allowing 68 or less points in wins, 89-80 in losses; day of practice helped them prepare for Northridge's pressure defense. CSUN's explosion (up 24 at half) vs DePaul makes them 1-3 vs D-I opponents; they shot 76% in first half, 61% for game. Matadors lost three starters from LY's 11-21 team, but new kids are improving.

Veteran Murray State team (3 starters back from 31-5 team) is 3-2, with losses by 16 at Ole Miss, 14 to UNLV; Racers are scoring just 55.3 ppg in four games vs D-I opponents. Oklahoma State led most of way before losing by 5 to Va Tech Friday; Cowboys are 4-23 from arc this weekend their three starting Gs are a combined 2-25 from floor in the two games.

UNLV is 5-0, beating Wisconsin by 3, Tulsa by 9, Murray State by 14; Rebels have 4 starters back from LY's 25-9 team- they've made 15-29 on arc in two games here. Veteran Virginia Tech held first two foes here to 29-33% from floor, beating Northridge by 16, Oklahoma St. by 5. This could just as easily be a first-round game in NCAAs come March.
