Knicks go for sixth straight win on Saturday

    ATLANTA HAWKS (9-7)

    at NEW YORK KNICKS (8-8)

    Tip-off: Saturday, 1:00 p.m. EDT
Line: New York -1.5, Total: 210

The Knicks look to continue their winning streak with a matinee at Madison Square Garden on Saturday against the Hawks. New York has won five straight games (all against sub-.500 teams with a combined 20-43 record) and will be aiming for six in a row for the first time since January 2006. Meanwhile, Atlanta snapped a three-game losing skid on Thanksgiving with a 116-96 rout of Washington.

Amar’e Stoudemire has led the way for the Knicks with 25.8 points, 8.6 rebounds and 3.0 blocks during the streak. Raymond Felton scored 23 points (his sixth 20-point effort of the season) to go along with a season-high 13 assists in New York's 99-95 win over Charlotte on Wednesday. Those two are big reasons why the Knicks' offense is averaging 106.7 points per game, fourth best in the NBA.

The defense hasn't been nearly as impressive, surrendering 107.1 PPG on 47.8% shooting (third worst in NBA). That could be a problem against an Atlanta team that's shooting 49.3% from the field and 39.6% from three-point range on the road.

Leading scorer Joe Johnson finally shot well in the Hawks' win over Washington. Johnson, who was averaging 12.2 PPG on 31.8% shooting in the previous five games, broke out with a team-high 21 points on 8-for-16 shooting against the Wizards. Johnson averaged 24.5 points, 6.8 rebounds and 5.8 assists last season against the Knicks, but Atlanta still lost three of four meetings. Keep an eye on Al Horford, who loves playing the Knicks in MSG. He's averaged 18 points and 11 rebounds in five career games in New York.

The Hawks are 5-2 (SU and ATS) on the road this season, while New York has struggled to a 2-4 home record (2-3 ATS). The Knicks are 6-1 ATS in their past seven meetings with Atlanta and this FoxSheets trend also expects New York to continue its winning streak:

Play Against - Road underdogs (ATLANTA) - off a home win against a division rival, winning between 51% and 60% of their games on the season. (143-87 since 1996.) (62.2%, +47.3 units. Rating = 2*).

Kansas-Arizona meet in Las Vegas final

      ARIZONA WILDCATS (5-0)

      vs. KANSAS JAYHAWKS (5-0)

      Las Vegas Invitational – Championship
Saturday, 10:30 p.m. EDT – Orleans Arena – Las Vegas, NV
      Line: TBD

An intriguing early-season matchup takes place on Saturday night as two storied hoops programs, Kansas and Arizona, face each other in the Las Vegas Invitational Championship. Expect a high-scoring affair as both teams haven't had a problem putting the ball in the basket this season.

In their five wins, the Jayhawks have scored at least 93 points three times, including Friday's 98-41 rout of Ohio. KU is averaging an impressive 92.5 points in its five victories, while giving up only 52.2 points. The Jayhawks lead the nation shooting at 58.5% FG. Meanwhile, in their five wins, including an 82-59 blowout of Santa Clara on Friday, the Wildcats are averaging 85.2 PPG and surrendering 54.6 points for a +30.6 scoring margin.

Forward Marcus Morris has been the key to the Jayhawks' early success, averaging 19.6 points on 70.2% FG plus 5.8 rebounds per game. He matched his career high with 26 points and added eight rebounds versus Ohio, and his frontcourt battle with super sophomore Derrick Williams (19.8 PPG, 7.2 RPG, 66% FG) will be one to watch on Saturday. Williams had 22 points in just 21 minutes in the win over Santa Clara.

Kansas is 7-0 all-time at the Las Vegas Invitational. The Jayhawks won the tournament in 2006, defeating eventual national champion Florida in the title game.

These teams have split six meetings since 2001, with Arizona taking the last meeting 84-67 in 2008. Arizona will be motivated to prove that they once again belong among the nation's best, but look for Morris and KU's backcourt to be the difference.

Miami Heat up next for Dallas Mavericks

When the Miami Heat walked off the court of the Amway Center in Orlando on Wednesday night, they knew that something really had to change or they wouldn't be able to win the NBA Championship this year, just as virtually every pundit in the world had picked at the outset of the season. Sporting one of the worst ATS records in the game, the Heat will travel to Big D on Saturday night for a heated NBA betting affair against the Dallas Mavericks.

Miami has a stop at home against the Philadelphia 76ers to contend with on Friday night before flying out to the Lone Star State. It is expected that this will be a game used to "get better" for the Heat, as they are 11-point favorites against one of the worst teams in the Eastern Conference.

Regardless of whether Miami enters this one at 9-7 or 8-8, expectations clearly haven't been met. The Heat are still dying to find that prototypical role player to help out the three big stars on the squad. It's nice to see that LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh are combining to score 62.3 PPG, but there isn't another player on the active roster right now that is even at 8.0 PPG.

Probably the best contributor to the bunch has been Zydrunas Ilgauskas, who is being called upon for more minutes with the injury that might keep Udonis Haslem out for the season. The former Cleveland Cavalier has averaged 6.9 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. Unfortunately, he is averaging over four fouls per game as well.

To help out inside the Heat have brought in Erick Dampier, a former member of the Mavericks, and he is expected to make his debut for Miami either Friday at home against Philly, or on Saturday in Dallas.

The Mavericks have a significantly tougher tussle to deal with on Friday night, as they are traveling to take on the team with the best record in the NBA, the San Antonio Spurs.

Dallas had won three in a row going into Friday night, but the NBA odds haven't always been in its favor. The Mavs are just 1-5-2 ATS in eight home games with a 5-3 SU mark in thos contests.

Unlike years past, this is a Dallas team that prides itself on defense and isn't afraid to get down and dirty with the grittiest teams that the NBA has to offer. The Mavs are holding teams to just 92.4 PPG and a 43.8 shooting percentage.

Dirk Nowitzki is playing like an All Star once again, as he is averaging 26.4 PPG and 8.4 RPG to lead the team. Unlike the "Big Three" in Miami, Nowitzki is getting a bunch of help, though.

The combination of Jason Kidd and Jason Terry in the backcourt has been huge this year. Though Kidd is only averaging 7.9 PPG, he already has 133 assists in 14 games against just 33 turnovers. Terry is second on the squad in scoring at 17.4 PPG.

The key to beating the Heat all season long has been getting in the paint and trying to do damage there. We don't know how Dampier is going to help out there, but until he gets accustomed to playing with his new teammates, we aren't so sure that the Heat have what it takes to come on the road and take out one of the better teams that the league has to offer.

Expect the NBA odds to be tight in this one, as these two teams look very evenly matched on paper.

          Weekend college basketball betting action

While the shopping sheep head to the retail slaughter at the malls on Black Friday and through the weekend, there's plenty of college basketball action to follow for those of us smart enough to do our shopping on-line. The bulk of Friday's action involves several tournaments, including the finals of the NIT Season Tip-Off at Madison Square Garden.

Villanova will meet Tennessee in that matchup, Friday's only contest pitting two ranked schools. The Wildcats, No. 7 in the latest AP poll, reached the finals with an 82-70 win over UCLA on Wednesday. 'Nova was a 5½-point favorite in the win that left Jay Wright's club 5-0 on the season, 3-0 against the spread.

The Volunteers moved to 4-0 with a 77-72 triumph against Virginia Commonwealth. No. 24 Tennessee was favored by three to sit 2-2 versus the number on the season.

College basketball oddsmakers opened Villanova as four-point chalk against the Vols, a number that has been bet up to 5½ at Bookmaker.com. The contest tips at 2 p.m. PT on ESPN.

Friday's schedule also includes tournament action in Florida with the Old Spice Classic, this Chicago Invitation Challenge, Atlantic City's Legends Classic and the 76 Classic in Anaheim.

Duke returns to the court on Saturday (1 p.m. PT) when the top-ranked Blue Devils travel to Portland to meet the Oregon Ducks. The defending champs are fresh off a convincing 82-68 win this past Tuesday over No. 4 Kansas State, easily covering the 5½-point spread in winning the O'Reilly Auto Parts CBS Classic. Duke has now covered three of its first four lined games.

Oregon (4-1 SU, 1-3 ATS) topped Texas Southern that same day, 75-52, in an game that never made the college basketball odds board.

Saturday's slate also has the continuation of the Las Vegas Invitational at the Orleans Arena with No. 6 Kansas hosting unranked Arizona in a late-night ESPN2 telecast (7:30 p.m. PT). The Jayhawks (4-0 SU, 2-0 ATS) open that tournament against the Ohio Bobcats on Friday while the Wildcats (4-0, 3-0) started with Santa Clara.

This will be the seventh meeting between KU and Arizona in the last 10 years with the previous six split down the middle at three wins apiece. The most recent battle was played in Tucson with the Wildcats taking an 84-67 win at home on Dec. 23, 2008, as slight two-point favorites.

Georgetown looks to improve to 6-0 when it hosts North Carolina-Asheville on Saturday. The No. 16 Hoyas will be taking the floor for the first time since Sunday's 82-67 triumph over North Carolina State in the Charleston Classic. It was the third consecutive cover for John Thompson III's squad, a five-point favorite against the Wolfpack. It also marked the second straight 'over' for the Hoyas.

Sunday's schedule has Michigan State hosting Tennessee Tech. The Spartans are returning home after a somewhat disappointing trip to Hawaii for the Maui Classic. State started that tournament ranked second in both polls but dropped its opener to UConn, 70-67, as six-point chalk. The straight up loss was the third straight game Tom Izzo's crew failed to cover the spread.

The Spartans bounced back to beat Washington, 76-71, as one-point underdogs to snap the skid at the window. Connecticut no doubt the best story of the young college hoops schedule, went on to win the Maui tournament with an 84-67 triumph over Kentucky as a 5½-point 'dog. That leaves the Huskies 5-0 straight up and 3-0 against the spread.

Sunday's slate also includes a great regional rivalry in Tallahassee where the Florida State Seminoles host No. 16 Florida. DonBest's Michael Robinson will preview that matchup that finds the Gators seeking for their first ATS win of the campaign.

NHL betting slate reaches quarter pole

Horse racing bettors certainly are aware that a nag taking the lead at the quarter pole doesn’t necessarily guarantee a winning ticket. When the 2010-11 NHL season reaches its quarter pole this weekend, there will be some surprise teams sitting with the big boys near the top of the standings.

The Phoenix Coyotes were the league’s most surprising team last season, leaping from the bottom of the Western Conference in 2008-09 to the No.2 seed and home ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

That metamorphosis has continued early this season, as the Coyotes enter weekend action riding a league-high seven-game winning streak. The surge has the club sitting atop the Pacific Division with 27 points thanks to an 11-5-4-1 ledger.

The Coyotes have scored three goals or more in each of their last six games and have allowed two goals or less four times during the winning streak.

Though Phoenix doesn’t have impressive statistics in any specific category, the club is getting it done with consistent play in all areas. In fact, the Coyotes entered weekend action outscoring the opposition by just three goals (62-59).

Coach Dave Tippett has his Coyotes scoring an average of 2.9 goals per game (13th) and allowing 2.8 GPG (15th). Additionally, special teams really haven’t been that special. The Coyotes rank 14th on the power play with a 17.1 percent success rate and 23rd in penalty killing (79.2 percent).

Phoenix will be hosting the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday in a game that pits a first place team against a cellar dweller. However, there are just four points separating the two squads in the Pacific Division.

Additionally, the Ducks have already defeated the Coyotes once this season after going 2-4 against them last year.

The Ducks registered a 3-2 victory against the Coyotes on Oct.17 as 140 NHL odds favorites. The combined five goals dipped below the 5 ½-goal closing total, enabling the ‘under’ to cash for the third straight meeting.

The Columbus Blue Jackets will get a chance to see if their early season success can continue when they play the Detroit Red Wings twice this weekend. The clubs are tied for the Central Division lead with 28 points, but have navigated there in different ways.

The offensive-minded Wings own the league’s best home ledger at 9-1-1, while the defensively efficient Jackets possess the best road record at 8-1-0-0.

Detroit ranks second on offense by scoring 3.5 goals per game, but is 14th defensively with a 2.7 goals-against average. Columbus ranks third defensively by allowing just 2.4 goals per game, but is 15th on offense with a 2.9 GPG average.

The two squads will meet Friday night in Columbus before traveling to the Motor City for a Sunday matinee at Joe Louis Arena.

Though the Wings were 5-1 in the six series meetings against the Jackets last season, five of the outings were decided by one goal and two went past regulation time. The ‘under’ cashed on four occasions, while two games ended with a 1-0 result.

The Montreal Canadiens enter weekend action sitting atop the Northeast Division with 29 points and a 14-7-1-0 ledger. Most of that success has been the direct result of the squad allowing a league-low 43 goals. Montreal’s 2.0 goals-against average ranks second in the league, its four shutouts rank third and its 90 percent success rate on the penalty kill ranks second.

The Canadiens are 6-2 in their last eight games, with the ‘under’ cashing in each of their last five efforts. In fact, the ‘under’ is a league-leading 17-4-1 in their first 22 overall outings and a perfect 9-0 in their first nine road encounters.

Carey Price, who has started between the pipes in 21 of Montreal’s first 22 games this season, is 13-7-1-0 with a 2.00 GAA and a sparkling .933 save percentage. He also has pitched four shutouts.

Jacques Martin’s troops will be playing back-to-back contests this weekend. They will travel to Atlanta for a Friday outing against the Thrashers before returning home for a Saturday meeting against the Buffalo Sabres.

                5-0 Dayton visits 4-0 Cincinnati

                DAYTON FLYERS (5-0)

                at CINCINNATI BEARCATS (4-0)

                Tip-off: Saturday, 7:00 p.m. EDT
                Line: Cincinnati -1, Total: 133

This will be a bruising battle of unbeaten Ohio schools when Dayton visits Cincinnati. The rival universities have already played three common opponents this year -- Mount St. Mary’s, Florida A&M and Savannah State. Both teams won by double-digits against the first two, but struggled both struggled with Savannah State. Dayton only beat the Tigers by two points and Cincinnati shot just 34 percent against them, winning 54-41.

The Flyers are manhandling their opponents so far this season, with a 12.8 average rebounding margin in their first five games. Despite shooting just 37% from the field, Dayton still won by seven points at Ole Miss (the only big conference school it has faced) last Saturday. Senior Chris Wright leads Dayton in scoring (13.8 PPG) and rebounding (8.4 RPG), but there are four other Flyers contributing at least eight points per night. Junior Paul Williams has been the team’s best three-point shooter (7-for-14) while freshman Juwan Staten has done a great job manning the point with 7.2 APG.

Cincinnati has been much less impressive in the early season, scoring less than 70 points in three of its four games, all against small-conference schools. Junior forward Yancy Gates leads the team with 12.8 PPG and 9.3 RPG as the only Bearcats player averaging over 30 minutes. Cashmere Wright is the only other player scoring in double figures (10.0 PPG) and also leads the team in assists (4.8 APG) and steals (2.5 SPG).

These teams have split the past six meetings, with Dayton winning last year’s contest 81-66. Cincy was 3-10 ATS as a favorite and 2-8 ATS as a home favorite last season, while Dayton was 4-1 ATS as a road underdog in 2009-10. These two FoxSheets trends also side with Dayton to win Saturday night.

Play Against - All teams where the line is +3 to -3 (CINCINNATI) - excellent defensive team - allowing <=57 points/game on the season, after a combined score of 110 points or less.(49-19 over the last 5 seasons.) (72.1%, +28.1 units. Rating = 3*).

Play On - All teams where the line is +3 to -3 (DAYTON) - average offensive team (67-74 PPG) against a poor offensive team (63-67 PPG), after allowing 60 points or less 2 straight games. (64-31 since 1997.) (67.4%, +29.9 units. Rating = 2*).

The past three meetings have all finished Over the Total, and this FoxSheets trend expects the Over to occur again.

DAYTON is 55-26 OVER (67.9%, +26.4 Units) in road games when playing against a team with a winning record since 1997. The average score was DAYTON 65.1, OPPONENT 70.7 - (Rating = 2*).

Dallas looks to continue dominance over Miami

                  MIAMI HEAT (9-7)

                  at DALLAS MAVERICKS (11-4)

                  Tip-off: Saturday, 8:30 p.m. EDT
                  Line: Dallas -2, Total: 189

Miami will try to snap two long losing skids against Dallas on Saturday night. The Heat have lost 12 straight regular-season games to the Mavericks and dropped eight in a row at American Airlines Center.

Miami, which is 1-10 ATS in its past 11 games, snapped a three-game SU losing skid Friday night with a 99-90 home win over Philadelphia as the Big Three of Wade, James and Bosh combined for 61 points, 23 rebounds and 16 assists. Unlike Dwyane Wade, who is 1-13 against Dallas in his career, LeBron James has had great success against the Mavs, especially in their arena. He has averaged 28.6 PPG on 49% FG in seven trips to American Airlines Center.

Speaking of the AAC, Dallas has been a terrible bet at home over the past two seasons. The Mavs were 10-29 (25.6%) ATS at home in 2009-10 and are 1-5 ATS in Dallas so far this season. The Mavericks have been on a roll lately, winning four straight games including two straight impressive road wins at Oklahoma City Wednesday and San Antonio Friday night. Dallas shot 53 percent from the floor and outrebounded the Spurs 49 to 37 in ending San Antonio’s 12-game winning streak. Dirk Nowitzki is second in the NBA in scoring (26.3 PPG), thanks to 102 points on 65.4% FG (34-for-52) in his past three games. Center Brendan Haywood should return to the court Saturday night after missing the San Antonio game for violating team rules. Haywood had three double-doubles against Miami last season.

The Mavericks were 1-5 ATS last season when playing a home game one day after a road contest. These two FoxSheets trends also side with Miami to end its losing streak to Dallas:

DALLAS is 1-13 ATS (-13.3 Units) in home games versus poor passing teams, averaging <=20 assists/game over the last 2 seasons. The average score was DALLAS 99.6, OPPONENT 97.6 - (Rating = 3*).

Play On - Underdogs (MIAMI) - after failing to cover the spread in 5 or more consecutive games, a marginal winning team (51% to 60%) playing a winning team. (38-14 since 1996.) (73.1%, +22.6 units. Rating = 2*).
