Arizona looks to hand Oregon its first loss

ARIZONA WILDCATS (7-3)

Oregon knows it’s lucky to still be in the National Championship hunt after nearly losing to injury-faking Cal in its last game. Ducks sophomore RB LaMichael James, who was on crutches after the Cal game, is not listed on the injury report and will play Friday. The home team is 5-1 ATS in the past six meetings, but Oregon won in Tucson last year, 44-41 in double OT. Wildcats QB Nick Foles threw for 314 yards and four touchdowns in the loss.

Foles has played very well in his two games since returning from injury, completing 60-of-96 passes for 601 yards, 4 TD and just one interception. Star WR Juron Criner has also been tough to cover lately, with 31 catches for 431 yards and three touchdowns in his past four games. On the defensive side of the ball, Arizona has some big concerns after allowing 211 rush YPG, 446 total YPG and 33.0 PPG in its past two games against Stanford and USC. These are all big increases from the 88 rush YPG, 287 total YPG and 14.4 PPG the Wildcats posted in their first eight games this year.

Arizona will need to fill its defensive holes against James, who continues to lead the nation in rushing yards (158 YPG) and scoring (12.0 PPG, 18 TD in nine games). James, whose car swap was ruled to not be in violation of NCAA rules earlier this week, rushed for 117 yards on 19 carries in last year’s win over Arizona. His sophomore teammate QB Darron Thomas has also excelled this year with 23 TD and only 6 INT. He has just one total interception in his past five games. Since allowing 728 passing yards over a two-game stretch against Arizona State and Stanford, Oregon has really shored up its pass defense. In the Ducks past five games, they have not allowed a 300-yard passer, holding opponents to just 173 passing YPG.

Arizona is 4-1 ATS in the past five meetings, but its one loss was its previous trip to Eugene in 2008 when the ‘Cats lost 55-45. This FoxSheets trend thinks Oregon will win and cover the big spread on Friday night:

OREGON is 27-8 ATS (77.1%, +18.2 Units) in home games after outgaining opponent by 125 or more total yards in their previous game since 1992. The average score was OREGON 39.1, OPPONENT 20.2 - (Rating = 3*).
