#1 Duke and #3 Kansas State meet in CBE Final

        DUKE BLUE DEVILS (4-0)

        vs. KANSAS STATE WILDCATS (4-0)

        CBE Classic Championship – Finals
        Tip-off: Monday, 10:00 p.m. EDT – Sprint Center – Kansas City, MO
        Line: TBD

Its Number 1 versus Number 3, two days before Thanksgiving with a championship trophy and pride on the line. Only in college basketball. Does it get any better than this?

The top-ranked Duke Blue Devils advanced to the championship game of the CBE Classic with an impressive victory over a resilient Marquette Golden Eagles squad 82-77. The Blue Devils had to kick it into the next gear after blowing a nine-point halftime advantage. With the game tied at 57, junior center Mason Plumlee took over, scoring 14 of his team-high 25 points in the game’s final 10 plus minutes of action. Plumlee also added 12 rebounds and five blocks to go along with his offensive output. On a night when Duke’s highly touted backcourt of Nolan Smith and Kyrie Irving were a bit sloppy, accounting for 11 of the team’s 19 turnovers, Plumlee’s domination in the paint was a necessity. The Blue Devils thwarted an upset bid by the Golden Eagles, who were led by Jimmy Butler’s 22 points, but doomed by its long range shooting attack. Marquette shot only 4-of-20 from beyond the arc.

Duke will take on coach Frank Martin and his Kansas State Wildcats, 81-64 victors over a Gonzaga team that has now lost two straight. Coming off of a lackluster nine-point victory over Presbyterian, Martin was looking for a pronounced improvement in his team’s defensive intensity and got it. Kansas State forced Gonzaga into shooting 33% from the floor, and out rebounded the ‘Zags by a 37-24 margin. The Wildcats were led by Jacob Pullen who totaled 18 points on 6-of-12 shooting. If the Blue Devils are to avoid the upset, they must once again be stellar defensively from the three-point line. Gonzaga was not, as the Bulldogs allowed Kansas State to shoot 12-of-26 (46.2%) from beyond the arc. Consequently K-State must find an answer in the paint for Mason Plumlee, who displayed the type of quickness and versatility in the pivot that has many people believing that this Duke team is even deeper than the one that cut down the nets in Indianapolis last April.

Michigan State-UConn meet in Maui semifinals

          CONNECICUT HUSKIES (3-0)

          vs. MICHIGAN STATE SPARTANS (3-0)

          Maui Classic – Semifinals
          Tip-off: Tuesday, 7:00 p.m. EDT
          Line: TBD

In the first meeting between these schools since the 2009 Final Four, two of the game’s most dominant programs in the last 15 years will meet in Maui, and just like last time, a championship game appearance will be on the line.

Michigan State and Connecticut may still be counting their blessings that they even made it into this game. The Spartans needed a 20-3 run to start the second half to pull away from a Chaminade team that was stirring up the ghosts from upsets past, specifically December 23, 1982, when the tiny school defeated then No. 1 ranked Virginia and Ralph Sampson 77-72. The Spartans and the Silver Swords were tied at 39 at the half, but Kalin Lucas’ game-high 28 points helped them grit out a tough 82-74 victory. The Spartans shot nearly 52% from the field, and 57% from beyond the arc, but will be hard pressed to duplicate that offensive performance against a Connecticut team that is holding its opponents to 40.4% shooting through its first three games.

Tonight’s showdown between State’s Kalin Lucas and Connecticut’s Kemba Walker will be worth a watch all by itself. Walker is coming off a game in which he torched the Wichita State Shockers for 29 second-half points (31 for the game) as the Huskies came back in a game in which they trailed the Shockers by as many as nine with under 10 minutes to play in regulation. Amazingly Walker’s 31 points came in only 23 minutes of play, as he sat for most of the first half in foul trouble. Coach Jim Calhoun’s team also got a big boost from freshmen Shabazz Napier and Roscoe Smith (10 points apiece). The Shockers were superior on the boards, outrebounding the Huskies 33-29 (12-8 on the offensive glass), a stat that Tom Izzo’s No. 2 ranked Spartans will be looking to exploit, as they are consistently one of the most tenacious rebounding squads in the country.

In the 2009 Final Four, Walker was overwhelmed on the big stage, and looked like a freshman as he totaled only five points that night. Tuesday, he is leading the nation with 30.0 PPG and is leading this young Connecticut team (six freshmen players) with confidence. If they can pull the upset, the Huskies will likely jump back into the top 25, and words like “rebuilding” may be used less and less to describe this year’s team.

Mavs are big favorites over Pistons

            DETROIT PISTONS (5-8)

            at DALLAS MAVERICKS (8-4)

            Tip-off: Tuesday, 8:30 p.m. EDT
            Line: Dallas -9.5, Total: 190

Detroit hits the road for back-to-back Western Conference games starting in Dallas Tuesday night. The Pistons ended a two-game losing streak Sunday with a 115-110 overtime win at The Palace against the John Wall-less Wizards. Expect this small boost of confidence to be short-lived as Detroit is only 2-5 SU on the road and has no wins against teams currently over .500 this season. The Mavs will have to earn this win at home as Detroit’s bench is contributing 41.3 PPG led by power forward Charlie Villanueva, who is averaging 15.2 PPG. The Pistons only lost by five points in each of their two games against Dallas last season and have kept games close on the road this year going 5-2 ATS.

The Mavericks return home after ending a two-game losing streak in a 98-93 win over Atlanta Sunday night. Dallas scored a season-low 83 points in its loss against the Bulls last Friday in the American Airlines Center, where it is 4-3 SU and a dismal 1-4-2 ATS. Only three Dallas players -- Dirk Nowitzki, Jason Terry and Caron Butler -- are averaging double-digit points at home, led by Nowitzki’s 25.7 PPG (58.0 FG Pct.). The Pistons defense is allowing opponents to shoot 47.2 FG Pct for an average of 100.9 points. If the Mavs can achieve and maintain an offensive rhythm Tuesday night, they will have no problem dropping buckets to snag a win at home.

In the past three seasons, Dallas is 4-0 SU (2-2 ATS) against Detroit and all four games went Over the total. The Mavericks will need to use their energy wisely against the Pistons, while not looking too far ahead, as they play in Oklahoma City Wednesday night and in San Antonio on Friday.

This five-star FoxSheets stat favors Detroit to cover the spread:

DALLAS is 1-16 ATS (-16.6 Units) in home games when playing against a team with a losing record over the last 2 seasons. The average score was DALLAS 101.8, OPPONENT 99.6 - (Rating = 5*).

This FoxSheets stat favors the Over:

DALLAS is 96-69 OVER (58.2%, +20.1 Units) against Central division opponents since 1996. The average score was DALLAS 99.4, OPPONENT 96.7 - (Rating = 0*).

Lakers seek 5th straight win Tuesday night

              CHICAGO BULLS (7-4)

              at LOS ANGELES LAKERS (12-2)

              Tip-off: Tuesday, 10:30 p.m. EDT
Line: Los Angeles -8.5, Total: 203

Chicago heads west for the final four games of its seven-game road trip against Western Conference teams. In their 88-83 win over the Mavs Friday night, the Bulls held Dallas to a season-low 83 points and had a 63-39 rebounding advantage. In the past six games, Chicago has only allowed 92.7 points per contest. Defense will be crucial Tuesday night against the top-scoring Lakers, who are averaging 112.5 PPG. With three full days of rest over the weekend, look for the Bulls to charge strong out of the gate as they’re led by Derrick Rose, who is averaging 25.2 PPG and 8.5 APG.

After losing two games in a row, the Lakers have annihilated their last four opponents by an average of 17.3 points. Pau Gasol went a perfect 10-for-10 from the floor for 28 points in a dominating 28-point win over Golden State on Sunday. Gasol, who is third in the league with 12.1 RPG, will have a physical matchup in the paint against Joakim Noah, who is second in the NBA with 13.3 RPG. Head coach Phil Jackson didn’t play any of his starters more than Gasol’s 30 minutes in the Warriors blowout in preparation for Tuesday’s matchup against his former Bulls. This will be a physical game with both teams well-rested as the Lakers look to give Chicago its fifth straight loss in Los Angeles.

Los Angeles has taken the past six meetings with Chicago, averaging 107.7 points in those six games and going 4-2 ATS. L.A. is 7-1 SU in the Staples Center but only 4-4 ATS.

This FoxSheets stat favors Chicago to cover the spread:

CHICAGO is 12-2 ATS (+9.8 Units) after 2 straight games with 19 or less assists over the last 2 seasons The average score was CHICAGO 98.5, OPPONENT 94.7 - (Rating = 2*).

Despite three of the past four meetings going Over the total, the previous nine meetings all went Under. This FoxSheets stat also favors the Under:

Play Under - Home teams where the total is 200 to 209.5 (LA LAKERS) - after going under the total by 30 or more points total in their last three games, with a winning record on the season playing another winning team. (64-28 since 1996.) (69.6%, +33.2 units). - Rating = 3*).

Coyotes seek 6th straight win Tuesday night

                EDMONTON OILERS (5-10-4, 14 pts)

at PHOENIX COYOTES (10-5-5, 25 pts)

Puck drops: Tuesday, 9:00 p.m. EDT
                Line: Phoenix -220, Edmonton +180 Total: 6

Only one game is one the NHL schedule Tuesday as the Edmonton Oilers travel to Phoenix to take on the Coyotes. This is the second time in the last four days that these two teams have played each other. Last Friday in Edmonton, Phoenix won 4-3 in a shootout.

Edmonton enters with the fewest points in the Western Conference and tied with New Jersey for the second-fewest (14) in the NHL. Only the lowly Islanders (12) have fewer points than the Oilers do, entering Tuesday. After winning their first two games of the season, the Oilers have gone 3-10-4 in their past 17 games. Nikolai Khabibulin won a Stanley Cup with Tampa Bay back in 2004, but he has been the main culprit for the Oilers struggles this season. Khabibulin ranks last among goaltenders with 56 goals allowed, a 4.07 GAA and only Rick DiPietro of the Islanders has a worse save percentage than Khabibulin’s .879. Khabibulin injured his groin against the Blackhawks on November 17 and is expected to remain on injured reserve until late November. In his place, backup Devan Dubnyk has yet to lose in regulation, going 1-0-3 in his four starts. On offense, Ryan Whitney leads the Oilers with 17 points, but has yet to score a goal. Ales Hemsky has a goal and assist in each of his past two games.

Life is good in the desert, where Phoenix has much to be thankful for entering the holiday week. First and foremost, the Coyotes have won six in a row to surge up the Pacific Division standings. They're back home again after sweeping a trip through Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver for the first time since the franchise relocated in 1996. And they welcomed captain Shane Doan back to the lineup against the Canucks. Goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov is 6-0-2 this month for the Coyotes and has a .924 save percentage during his current five-game winning streak.

Along with Khabibulin (groin), defenseman Ladislav Smid (concussion) is on injured reserve for Edmonton. Phoenix forward Kyle Turris (upper body) is day-to-day, while defenseman Kurt Sauer (concussion) is on injured reserve.

The Oilers seemed to have developed confidence in Dubnyk as their zero regulation losses in his four starts point out. The Coyotes have played outstanding of late, but nothing really stands out about this team that would make you think they are a lock to win. I’m going with Edmonton to pull the upset since the payoff is just not worth it with the Coyotes at -220.

                FoxSheets says:

EDMONTON is 125-114 ATS (+252.1 Units) after having lost 3 of their last 4 games since 1996. The average score was EDMONTON 2.9, OPPONENT 2.7 - (Rating = 0*).

                  Road-weary Governors visit Purdue

The No. 9 team in the nation will be back in NCAA basketball betting action on Tuesday night at home, as the Purdue Boilermakers will look to improve to 4-0 on the season at the expense of the Austin Peay Governors.

The Govs have had an atrocious time this season on the road, as they have yet to open up their home arena. They got off to a flying start against the St. Louis Billikens and the Tennessee-Chattanooga Mocs, but they have since suffered a relatively inexcusable loss in OT to the Lipscomb Bison and a solid defeat at the Southern Illinois Salukis 72-65.

Needless to say though, this is the challenge of all challenges for Austin Peay, as this is likely the most difficult matchup it will face all season long.

Defense is a major bone of contention for one of the traditional Ohio Valley Conference powers. The Governors are allowing 76.2 PPG on the campaign, which ranks just No. 291 in the nation coming into play on Monday night.

On the other end of the court, this is clearly a three-man show right now in terms of scoring. Tyshwan Edmondson, Anthony Campbell and Josh Terry are all averaging double digits per game in scoring at 17.8, 13.2, and 12.8 PPG respectively.

The problem has been keeping control of the basketball. In just three games this year, Austin Peay has already turned the rock over 55 times. The biggest problem has been the 18 turnovers of Caleb Brown, though he does lead the team with 5.0 APG.

Life after Robbie Hummel (knee injury) continues to go relatively well for the Boilermakers, though they know that they have some major issues to contend with still going into Big Ten play this year without one of their bona fide stars.

So far, so good in 2010, though. Purdue ranks No. 17 in the land in scoring at 87.0 PPG and No. 4 in defense at 51.7 PPG. The closest game on the season was an 82-67 win over the Oakland Golden Grizzlies. Unfortunately for college basketball bettors though, that was the only game with a NCAA hoops spread on it all season long, and the 15-point win wasn't enough to cover the 16-point line.

As always, when you're talking about Purdue basketball, you're talking about E'Twaun Moore and JaJuan Johnson. Once again, Johnson is the grinder of the bunch, as he is averaging 15.7 PPG, 9.0 RPB, and 2.6 BPG. He also leads the squad with five steals. Moore is the scorer and distributor when he isn't putting the rock in the air. He is averaging 20.3 PPG and has 14 assists.

The key to this season is going to be trying to find a third scorer. So far this year, the best candidate is John Hart. The sophomore has come off of the bench to account for 13.0 PPG while averaging slightly less than 15 minutes per game.

However, this is nothing new for head coach Matt Painter who is deploying a ton of bodies at this point early in the season. Moore and Johnson are the only two averaging more than 25 minutes per game, but there are nine others that have averaged playing more than 13 minutes but fewer than 20 minutes per game.

The Boilermakers are only 2-8-1 ATS in their last 11 games overall and just 2-5-1 ATS in their last eight played at Mackey Arena. This is going to be the first meeting of these teams on the collegiate hardwood in their respective school histories.

Wizards, Sixers on Tuesday NBA odds board
                    .
Some NBA teams have enough depth to overcome injuries to their star players, at least in the short term. However, Washington and Philadelphia are not among those squads.

The Wizards and 76ers will meet Tuesday in Washington for the second time this season, with Washington hoping to get John Wall back in the lineup and Philly eager for the return of Andre Iguodala. Both players are listed as “questionable” in the Don Best injury report.

The visiting Sixers haven’t played since last Friday when they snapped a five-game losing skid by mauling Milwaukee as 4 ½-point home underdogs, 90-79. The win raised Philadelphia’s ledger to 3-10 straight up and 6-6-1 against the NBA spread.

The combined 169 points dipped well below the 188 ½-point closing total. That left the ‘under’ 8-5 in Philadelphia’s first 13 outings, including the last three in a row.

The Sixers have not scored more than 93 points in any of their last five games, which isn’t surprising with Iguodala’s 12.8 PGF and 5 APG missing in action. The star 6-foot-6 small forward, who averaged 17.1 PPG last season, has played in just eight of the club’s first 13 games because of a nagging Achilles heel injury.

Thaddeus Young scored a season-high 23 points in Iguodala’s absence to lead the Sixers past Milwaukee. Lou Williams added 19 markers and Andres Nocioni contributed 12 points to give the Sixers just their second home win of the season.

Elton Brand, who leads the team in scoring this season with a 15.9 PPG average, scored just four points. Brand also leads the team in rebounds, hauling down 7.8 boards per contest.

Though Philadelphia is just 1-6 SU in its first seven road dates, the club is 3-3-1 ATS. Doug Collins has his troops averaging 97.5 PPG (21st), and allowing 100.6 PPG (15th).

Washington is off Sunday’s 115-110 overtime loss at Detroit as 4 ½-point road underdogs. It was the Wizards’ fourth straight game without point guard John Wall, and lowered their record to 4-8 SU and 5-7 ATS.

Despite the combined 225 points soaring ‘over’ the 195-point closing total, the ‘under’ is still 7-5 in Washington’s first 12 encounters.

Wall, the first overall selection in last year’s draft, missed his fourth consecutive game because of a sprained left foot. The former Kentucky All-America point guard is averaging 18.1 points per game and 9.8 assists per contest in his first eight games as a pro.

Javale McGee and Andray Blatche each collected 20 points in the overtime loss at Detroit, while Gilbert Arenas chipped in with 19 points and a game-high 16 assists. Arenas, who averaged 22.6 points in just 32 games for the Wizards last season, is averaging 15.9 points in nine games this year.

These two Eastern Conference foes have already met once this season (Nov.2), with the Wizards edging the Sixers in overtime, 116-115. Washington did not cover the spread as a three-point home favorite, allowing the Sixers to improve to 5-2-1 ATS in the last eight series meetings.

The combined 231 points sailed above the 192-point closing total, enabling the ‘over’ to improve to 13-3 in the last 16 series meetings.

However, that game was not going at an ‘over’ pace until the teams combined for 74 points in the fourth quarter. The game was tied at 106 in regulation.

Lou Williams came off the bench to lead the Sixers with a game-high 30 points, while Iguodala added 12 points and nine assists.

Philadelphia lost the game despite shooting a sizzling 55 percent from the field, collecting 10 more assists than the Wizards and outscoring the home team in the paint, 50-36.

However, Washington used its home court advantage to go 36-of-43 from the charity stripe compared to 23-of-29 for the visiting Sixers. The Wizards also out-rebounded the 76ers, 47-43.

Wall was an integral part of the victory, leading the Wizards with 29 points, 13 assists and a dazzling nine steals. Blatche added 23 points and eight rebounds, while Nick Young stepped off the bench to add 20 points.

The Wizards are averaging just 96.4 points per game, which ranks 26th. They aren’t any better defensively, allowing 103.4 PPG (24th).

Washington hits the road for a Thanksgiving Day contest at Atlanta to play the Hawks. The Sixers play the second half of a back-to-back road trip Wednesday at Toronto against the Raptors.

Gonzaga, Kansas St lead Monday's board

Somebody is about to be asked to play an incredibly tough back-to-back this early on the college basketball schedule. The winner of Monday's Kansas State, Gonzaga matchup at Kansas City's Spring Center is most likely going to be playing defending champ and current No. 1 Duke on Tuesday. It's all part of the close to the O'Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic that started last week on the home courts of the four finalist.

Duke will battle Marquette in Monday's opener (4:30 p.m. PT, ESPN 2) with the Wildcats and Bulldogs tipping about 25-20 minutes after the conclusion of that game. DSI, like most offshore sites, listed the Blue Devils as 12-point favorites with Kansas State holding a minus five-point line. Game totals had yet to be released.

Gonzaga (2-1, 1-1) entered last week 11th in the AP rankings, the top slot among the mid-majors. The Bulldogs might lose that honor when the ne polls come out later Monday after dropping a 79-76 decision the last time they took the court (Nov. 16). There shouldn't be much shame in Gonzaga dropping a close game like that to the Aztecs who were No. 25 according to the writers, even at home as a six-point favorite. Still, the defeat will likely push the Bulldogs down a tad towards Butler (formerly No. 16) and maybe below Mountain West unbeatens BYU and SDSU who are sort of 'senior mid-majors,' if that's possible.

The Bulldogs opened their O'Reilly Classic schedule with an 86-56 skate past IUPUI on Nov. 14 as 15-point chalk.

Kansas State (3-0, 1-1) was third in the AP a week ago and also could drop a tad despite winning three games to open the campaign. Frank Martin's group stopped both James Madison and Virginia Tech as hosts to get the tournament rolling. The Wildcats fell short of covering a 19-point line versus the Dukes in a 75-61 win before blasting the Hokies by a 73-57 count as seven-point chalk.

The Wildcats then felt Martin's wrath in a 76-67 win against Presbyterian this past Thursday (Nov. 18), a nine-point victory over an unlined opponent. If K-State plays like that against Gonzaga, the Bulldogs will run the Wildcats out of the gym. No offense to Presbyterian intended.

Monday's meeting is only the second time Gonzaga and KSU have squared off, the first over 16 years ago in the old NIT tournament. K-State won a close duel, 66-64, to reach the final eight in that 32-team field. The Wildcats eventually lost to Vanderbilt, 82-76, in the semifinals of the postseason tourney and lost the consolation battle with Siena, 92-79.

Whoever wins will, er, should be giving Duke its first real test of the season on Tuesday. Marquette is a middling team in the Big East and perfectly capable of upsetting the Blue Devils on Monday. The Golden Eagles haven't had a lot of luck against ranked teams, just 39-95 in their history versus top-10 opponents, but they have scratched out a 2-5 all-time mark versus Duke. One of those wins came in the 2006 championship of this very tournament.

Monday's winner in the Wildcats, Bulldogs battle will be the team most focused on the game at hand and not thinking about the previous or next games. I like for it to be a very close, competitive game and that means I like Gonzaga and the points.

Following Tuesday's games, the Kansas State heads home to Bramlage Coliseum for a Friday matchup with Texas Southern. Mark Few and the Bulldogs also go home to Seattle, take the rest of the holiday week off and return to their floor on Tuesday, Nov. 30, versus Eastern Washington.
