College football opening line report: Week 13

It’s a new feeling for Alabama football, so you can forgive the Crimson Tide if they’re still getting used to it. After all, they’ve been in the thick of the national title hunt for two seasons and, now that they’re not, they have to find other ways to motivate themselves.

Has it worked? Well, sometimes yes this season, and sometimes no. Let’s face it, not even the most critical Alabama fan would tell you they expected two losses this season, much less to LSU and South Carolina, but they can make it all go away this week, by defeating Auburn.

They can truly get used to the spoiler role, once and for all, by ruining the perfect season of their most bitter rival. It’s a golden opportunity for the Crimson Tide, and now that the overall disappointment of the season has sunk in for the national champions, perhaps it’s time to get down to business.

“The preparation is going to be intense because, right now, this is our big game,” Alabama linebacker Dont’a Hightower said. “We have to go in and get ready. The guys have to give the tapes a good look, as far as offense, defense, and special teams. They’re a real good team. But hopefully we’ll come in, and play real hard on Friday.”

That’s all well and good that Hightower thinks the Tide will show up for the Iron Bowl. But what about the pros in Las Vegas?

“Alabama is still the superior team here," said Pete Korner of the Sports Club in Las Vegas. "And our power ratings were even higher than we thought. We could have gone as high as 7 or 7.5."

As it was, though, considering Auburn's place in the national title race, Korner made Alabama a 4.5-point favorite. But make no mistake: He and all of Las Vegas understand what the Crimson Tide are capable of.

"But you have to respect the fact that it could be a close game," Korner said. "A big rivalry, with so much on the line for Auburn, you cannot forget about that here. But Alabama is still the favorite."

Alabama has outscored its competition by a combined 93-17 in winning two games since the loss to LSU.

“In the last couple of games, we have shown a little more maturity in the way we have prepared and practiced," Alabama coach Nick Saban said. "I think we have played better because of it.”

But does that mean the money will come in on the Tide?

“Very interested to see where this line goes," Korner said. "There may be good money on both teams coming in. We'll see."

And with that, let’s take a look at some other marquee games during Rivalry Week, and the opening opinion circulating out of the desert:

    Texas A&M (-4.5) at Texas

“Very strange to see in this matchup,” Korner said. “A road favorite with Texas A&M. If this game was to be played five weeks ago, it would’ve been much different, would’ve been unheard of. But that’s where these two programs are right now.”

    Arizona (+22) at Oregon

“Even though Oregon has had some weeks where they did not get it done, people are still betting Oregon,” Korner said. “So, we just had to give it the highest number we could. Oregon is going to draw big money, no matter what.”

    Boise State (-14.5) at Nevada

“Interesting, depending on where you are,” Korner said. “In Las Vegas, this line may go up, and people may play Boise hard. But we expect strong Nevada action in Reno (the Wolfpack’s home), so we want to respect that. Should be a great game.”

    West Virginia (+3.5) at Pitt

“Really wanted to keep this off of a field goal line,” Korner said. “May well come down to a field goal. This is a tight series, and a big rivalry, with plenty on the line. We’ll see how the line closes, but we’d really like to keep it off the field goal.”

    Michigan (+19) at Ohio State

“In the betting world, this is not much of a rivalry anymore,” Korner said. “Michigan doesn’t have much left, and Ohio State has plenty at stake. More talent, more motivation, this is going to be a blowout.”

    Northwestern (+23) at Wisconsin

“Same deal here,” Korner said. “Wisconsin is rolling, and can really see the finish line now. Nothing more you can say really, we set it high, and it’ll probably come down to a late touchdown on either side.”

    Oklahoma (-2) at Oklahoma State

“Lot of discussion here for this one, a great game for this state. It should be fun,” Korner said. “But we went with the road favorite, and we expect to draw Oklahoma money throughout the week.”

    LSU (+4.5) at Arkansas

“Should be a very good, tight SEC game, typical of the end of the year in that conference,” Korner said. “With the game being in Little Rock, we went Arkansas and could’ve gone higher. They’re a very explosive team, and they’re showing it lately.”

    Florida (Pick) at Florida State

“Should be a super competitive game, which is rare in this series of late,” Korner said. “There was some discussion as to who should be the favorite, and in the end, we just put it at a Pick. I think Florida wins this game, though.”

Michigan State (-2) at Penn State

“Another road favorite in the Big Ten, late in the year,” Korner said. “But it’s a big game for Michigan State, and they have a chance to close out a great year.”

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Temple Owls at Miami Of Ohio Redhawks [ESPN2 | 7:00 PM ET]

OWLS: (-6, O/U 44) Temple has been considered the class of the MAC, but they are coming off a shocking home loss to Ohio. How will the Owls respond after being eliminated from MAC supremacy? Temple is 8-3 SU and 7-4 ATS this season. The Owls are 3-2 SU and 4-1 ATS on the road this season. Temple is also 3-1 ATS as a single digit favorite this year. The Owls had been outstanding on defense recently, until they allowed 31 PTS to Ohio. Despite that poor showing, the Owls are only allowing 18.7 PPG, 14th best in the nation. Temple continues to be a running based offense, as they have 2 RB's that have rushed for 700 YDS each. RB's Bernard Pierce and Matt Brown have combined for 1,500 rushing YDS and 17 TD's this year. The Owls are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games following an ATS loss. Temple is 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games after accumulating less than 100 yards rushing in their previous game. The Owls are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 road games against a team with a winning home record.

Owls are 9-2 ATS last 11 road games overall.
Over is 4-0 last 4 games following a SU loss.

Key Injuries - RB Bernard Pierce (hamstring) is questionable.

                Projected Score: 21

REDHAWKS: Miami of Ohio has had a tremendous season, as they are bowl eligible at 7-4 SU. Making matters even better is the fact that they are still in contention for a conference championship. The Redhawks were expected to be one of the worst teams in the nation, just like last season. Instead, they've been the biggest surprise in the entire nation. The Redhawks are 3-1 SU at home this year, and are playing their final game of the year at home tonight. Despite injuries and no established star, this Redhawks offense keeps moving along. Defensively, the Redhawks have held their each of their past 3 opponents to 21 PTS or fewer. Revenge is certainly on the minds of Miami of Ohio, as they've lost the past 3 meetings against Temple. The Redhawks are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following an ATS loss. Miami of Ohio is 3-9 ATS in their last 12 games played in November. The Redhawks are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following a SU win.

Redhawks are 4-1 ATS last 5 games after scoring less than 20 points in their previous game.
Under is 5-0 last 5 home games against a team with a winning road record.

Key Injuries - WR Luke Swift (ankle) is questionable.

Projected Score: 20 (SIDE of the Day)

Temple at Miami Ohio (+6.5, NA)

Temple travels to Oxford to Miami in the regular season finale for both teams Tuesday night.

                  Wait And See

The RedHawks are calling it the biggest game at Yager Stadium since the Big Ben era and a national television audience will be on hand to see it when they host the Owls on ESPN2.

Miami is tied atop the MAC East Division with Ohio, with Temple one game back. The RedHawks do not control their own destiny because of their loss to the Bobcats earlier this season.

Besides having to beat Temple, Miami needs Kent State to top OU this Friday.

                  Most Improved Team

Regardless of tonight’s outcome, MU is bowl eligible and is also the nation’s most improved team this season.

Miami has six more victories than it recorded in 2009.

Coach Michael Haywood attributes this year’s turnaround to the seniors on the team.

“We’ve made great strides, but we still have a long way to go,” said Haywood, who has transformed a program that went 1-11 in 2008 and 2-10 in 2009 into a bona fide bowl contender.

“The seniors on this team are the bridge builders,” he said. “They’re doing a tremendous job of building this bridge for the young guys who are going to follow behind them, taking Miami football back to the traditional Miami football of winning championships and playing in bowl games.”

Haywood noted that the nucleus of the team consists of freshmen and sophomores, who made up 47 of the 65 spots on Miami’s most recent travel roster.

Miami’s ability to win close games has been huge. In games decided by seven or fewer points this season, Miami is a perfect 5-0.

A win tonight would leave Miami with its best MAC record since 2004 when MU won the East Division title with a 7-1 record.

                  Hoot toots

Residing in third place in the MAC East Division, Temple is bowl eligible for the second consecutive year and just the fifth time in school history.

Sophomore RB Matt Brown leads all rushers with 774 yards and seven touchdowns on 148 carries. Senior WR Michael Campbell is the top receiver with 700 yards and six touchdowns on 42 receptions.

In four starts, red-shirt sophomore QB Mike Gerardi is 82-of-129 for 1,182 yards and 10 touchdowns.

On the defensive front, Senior LB Elijah “Peanut” Joseph leads the defense with 71 tackles, while junior DT Muhammad Wilkerson leads the team with 8.5 sacks.

                  Battered And Bruised

For the second year in a row, Ohio delivered a bitter blow to the Owls.

Temple’s 31-23 loss to the Bobcats last Tuesday means the Owls once again will not go to the MAC title game.

"I'm not going to lie to you, it's a heartbroken team right now," head coach Al Golden said. "The coaches, too. We didn't take advantage of this opportunity, so that's disappointing.

“We have to finish. We have a long way to go. As a program we have a long way to go. We’re competing two years in a row for a chance to play in a championship game,” said Golden about his Owls this season.

“When I came here that’s what I said I want us to do, to be in the upper third of the conference every year. We’re going to keep moving the program forward.”

Adding to Temple woes was the loss of RB Bernard Pierce in last week’s game. On the first snap, Pierce took the ball off left tackle, found a bunch of open field and picked up 67 yards to the Ohio 15.

Pierce limped off the field, favoring his left hamstring and never returned.

                  Losing Pierce hurt.

"It's difficult," Golden said. "Obviously, you can tell it changed things. But they did a better job than we did, especially in that kind of weather. That's not why we lost. What we didn't do, we have to get that fixed."

The sophomore has carried the ball more than any other Owl this year but ranks second in rushing yards at this point. If he is unable to go, expect Brown to add to his team-leading rushing total.

Making matters worse, leading tackler Joseph was carted off the field with a leg injury.

Both Pierce and Joseph are listed as questionable for tonight’s game.

                  Pick Me

With the total amount of bowl games set at a record 35 this season, there is fear that not enough teams will reach the six-win plateau needed to make ‘bowl-eligibility’.

In all likelihood it may mean waiving the six-win criteria (seven wins for teams that own two wins against non-FBS schools) in order to fill enough slots.

Doing their share to help ease the conundrum, the Mid American Conference could find as many as six teams hitting the bowling alleys this campaign.

Included are Miami Ohio, Northern Illinois, Ohio U, Temple and Toledo - all bowl-eligible heading into Thanksgiving week. A victory by Western Michigan at Bowling Green Friday would give the loop a six-pack of qualifiers.

                  The Database Says

                  • The Owls are 2-13 straight up and 3-11-1 against the spread in games after a straight up loss as a favorite.

                  • Under Golden, Temple is: 3-0 straight up and 2-1 against the spread versus Miami, and 10-3 against the number versus an opponent they defeated in their most recent meeting. Golden is 0-4 straight up and 0-3-1 against the spread in final road games.

                  • Miami is 1-4 straight up and 0-4-1 against the spread in its last five home games.

                  • Under Haywood, the RedHawks are 5-1 straight up and against the spread in games against opponents off a loss of more than seven points.

                    Texas A&M at Texas (+3.5, 47.5)

The Texas A&M offense has gotten plenty of headlines this season. But maybe it’s the defense that should have Texas worried.

The No. 18 Aggies will be looking to extend their winning streak to six games and keep their slim hopes of a spot in the Big 12 title game alive when they visit the rival Longhorns on Thursday.

                    Catch And Release

It looked like another mediocre season in College Station when a 3-0 start just as quickly turned into 3-3 after a home loss to Missouri on October 16. But those three losses came with Jerrod Johnson at quarterback and each came against strong competition, with Missouri the only true home game in a stretch with losses at Oklahoma State and in Arlington against Arkansas.

The turning point came in a 45-10 drubbing of Kansas on October 23, when Johnson started and broke the Texas A&M (8-3, 5-2 Big 12) career record for total yardage before yielding in the second quarter to Ryan Tannehill, who had taken just 12 snaps previously and had been used mostly as a wide receiver during his first three years.

But Tannehill looked right at home under center against the Jayhawks, throwing for three touchdowns. He turned that success into a more wins, dialing up the competition in home victories over Texas Tech and Oklahoma and a victory at Baylor on November 13. Tannehill led the Aggies to at least 33 points in each of those wins.

No. 8 Nebraska proved to be the biggest test, as Tannehill relied on running back Cyrus Gray and guided the Aggies to a 9-6 victory on national television. Gray rushed for 137 yards on 26 carries while Tannehill threw for 172 yards and did not turn the ball over. Randy Bullock kicked a 19-yard field goal with 3:02 left to seal the win.

It was the defense that stood out, forcing a pair of turnovers and holding Cornhuskers’ duel-threat quarterback Taylor Martinez to 17 yards rushing and 107 yards passing.

Texas A&M has won five straight Big 12 games for the first time since 1998 and still has a very slim chance to sneak into the Big 12 title game if Oklahoma tops Oklahoma State on Saturday and the Aggies somehow managed to vault the Sooners in the BCS standings.

                    Upside Down

For one team to rise, another has to fall, and that has been Texas (5-6, 2-5) this season. The perennial power has taken a big step back, falling to last place in the Big 12 South. The Longhorns, who played for the national championship last season, need a win this weekend just to become bowl eligible.

Texas stepped away from conference play last weekend and managed to snap a four-game slide with a 51-17 victory over Florida Atlantic. Garrett Gilbert threw a pair of touchdown passes and Cody Johnson rushed for 128 yards and a score.

Coach Mack Brown has not suffered a losing season since 1989 when he was at North Carolina. The Longhorns are 9-3 against Texas A&M in the Brown era and own a 75-36-5 edge in the series history.

                    Trends

The Aggies are 5-0 ATS in their last five conference games and 6-2 ATS in their last eight games as favorites.

Texas is 7-3 ATS in its last 10 games as an underdogs but just 2-9 ATS in its last 11 games against teams with winning records.

Underdogs covered four of last five LSU-Arkansas games (all decided by 5 or less points). LSU is +8 in turnovers in last three games; their only loss this year was 24-17 at unbeaten Auburn. Arkansas won/covered last five games, scoring 44.8 ppg; they're 3-1 as home fave this year. Last six Arkansas games went over total. SEC home favorites of 6 or less points are 8-2 vs spread this season. LSU won LY's game 33-30 in OT.

                          What Bettors Need to Know
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Arizona Wildcats at Oregon Ducks (-19, 63)

Two more teams stand between Oregon and a chance at its first national championship. Neither will be easy.

Oregon hosts No. 20 Arizona in a Pac-10 contest Friday night. The Ducks are ranked No. 1 in the nation and are on top the crucial BCS standings.

                          Odds

Books opened with the Ducks set as 17.5-point favorites. That number climbed to its current standing while the total has also risen from 61.5 to 63.

Oregon is 6-3-1 ATS with a 7-3 over/under record. Arizona boasts a 5-5 ATS mark with a 6-4 ATS record.

                          Duck and cover

Oregon also knows all that could fall apart with a loss on Friday.

The Ducks survived a bit of a scare in their last outing when California shut down the nation’s top-ranked offense in a 15-13 nail-biter.

Cal took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on Shane Vereen’s 1-yard run. While falling behind is nothing new to Oregon, failing to respond in a heartbeat surely was.

Oregon took an 8-7 lead late in the second quarter when Cliff Harris returned a Cal punt 64 yards for a touchdown. The Ducks opted for the two-point conversion and got one on a run by Dion Jordan.

It appeared the rout was on but the Ducks’ star-studded backfield of LaMichael James and Darron Thomas never got on track. James finished with 91 yards on 29 carries and Thomas, the sleek quarterback finished 15 of 29 passing for 155 yards.

James is listed as probable for Friday’s game with a nagging leg injury.

He did throw a crucial touchdown pass to Jeffrey Maehl in the third quarter. The 29-yard strike was the last score of the game for Oregon, which actually put the ball in the freeze at the end of the game.

Cal got a fumble recovery in the end zone to cut the lead to 15-13 and went for the tying conversion but a pass failed.

While many figured the Ducks were due for a lethargic performance, the close call didn’t hurt them in the polls or the BCS standings.

Oregon (10-0 7-0 Pac-10) can rest assured that if it runs the table it will earn a berth in the BCS championship game even though there are four undefeated teams in the country.

                          Cat scratch fever

Arizona (7-3, 4-3) has slipped from its once lofty perch in the Pac-10. After moving into the top 10 in the national polls with a suffocating defense, the Wildcats were humbled by Stanford 42-17 before losing to USC 24-21 at home.

Arizona is currently projected to meet Texas A&M in the Holiday Bowl if it can maintain its third spot in the Pac-10. That won’t be easy as the Wildcats will be tested Friday and again in its season finale against a desperate Arizona State team.

The Wildcats hope to have running back Nic Grigsby back in the lineup. Grigsby missed last game will an ankle injury. Backup quarterback Matt Scott is out with a wrist injury.

Arizona has won the last two meetings between the two teams in high-scoring affairs, including a 44-41 victory last year.

                          Trends

                          - Home team is 5-1 ATS in their last six meetings.

                          - Wildcats are 4-1 ATS in their last five meetings.

                          - Underdog is 4-1 ATS in their last five meetings.

                          Weather

The forecast is calling for showers at Autzen Stadium with a 70 percent chance of rain. Game-time temperatures will be in the mid 40s with wind blowing across the field (SSW) at speeds of up to 20 mph.

Boise State Broncos at Nevada Wolf Pack (+13.5, 68)

All the fuss being made about whether or not Boise State will end up in a BCS bowl overlooks one important element.

The Broncos haven’t even clinched the Western Athletic Conference title yet.

No. 3 Boise State will get the chance to wrap up the WAC crown on Friday night when it visits No. 19 Nevada in a pivotal conference contest at Mackay Stadium in Reno.

                          Odds

This spread opened at 14.5 point but has been bet down past two touchdowns to its current standing. As for the total, the number has stayed put at its original post.

                          Cry Wolf

The Broncos (10-0, 6-0 WAC, 8-2 ATS) are looking for their 25th consecutive victory but could receive a test from the Wolf Pack (10-1, 5-1, 5-6 ATS), whose only blemish is a close loss at Hawaii in mid-October.

If not for that stumble, the meeting that has been highly anticipated by Nevada and its fans would be between two unbeaten squads.

The Wolf Pack, who have lost 10 straight contests to Boise State, are just as loaded on offense as Boise State. The problem is that the Broncos’ defense is superior to Nevada’s unit.

                          Score more

Both Boise State and Nevada have scored 51 or more points on five occasions this season. But while the Broncos rank second nationally in both scoring defense (11.5 points per game) and total defense (229.2 yards per game), Nevada is 38th in scoring defense (21.7) and 67th in total defense (374.6) nationally.

Nevada’s bread-and-butter is the running game with its diverse Pistol offense. The Wolf Pack are fourth nationally with an average of 304.4 rushing yards per game. But Boise State excels at stopping the run, leading the nation at 72.3 yards per outing.

Nevada’s Vai Taua leads the WAC with 1,241 yards and quarterback Colin Kaepernick has rushed for 984 yards. Both players have rushed for 16 touchdowns.

Taua has 24 career 100-yard rushing games while Kaepernick has thrown for 2,412 yards and 19 touchdowns this season. The Nevada quarterback has been intercepted six times.

Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore is a better passer than Kaepernick and gets to go up against Nevada’s shaky pass defense, which ranks 103th nationally at 249.9 yards per game.

Moore leads the nation in passing efficiency and has thrown 28 touchdown passes against just five interceptions. Moore’s favorite target is Titus Young, who has caught 55 passes for 988 yards.

Boise State ranks second in the nation in scoring offense at 47.9 points per game.

                          News and notes

The Broncos are coming off an impressive 51-0 beat-down of Fresno State in which they allowed just 125 yards. The shutout was Boise State’s third of the season.

Nevada defeated New Mexico State 52-6 last week to notch a 10-win season for the first time since joining the major college ranks in 1992.

Wolf Pack defensive end Dontay Moch is having a big season with 19.5 tackles for loss, including eight sacks. Moch has 60.5 career tackles for loss.

                          Trends

                          - The Broncos are 7-2 ATS in their last nine meetings with the Wolf Pack.

                          - Road team is 4-0 ATS in their last four meetings.

                          - Wolf Pack are 6-1 ATS in their last seven games in November.

                          - Broncos are 19-7 ATS in their last 26 road games.

                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Game of the day: Auburn at Alabama
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Auburn Tigers at Alabama Crimson Tide (-4, 59)

For the second year in a row, the Iron Bowl has implications that go way beyond instate bragging rights.

In 2009, Auburn failed to play spoiler on Alabama’s road to the national championship. This year, their roles are reversed with the Crimson Tide aiming to ruin Auburn’s dream season. It’s safe to say that this is one of the more important games of the college football season.

                            Why Auburn will cover

This isn’t something you hear too often from the No. 2 team in the nation, but Auburn has been undervalued all season and having it listed as a 4-point dog is an early Christmas gift. The Tigers are 6-1 ATS in SEC play this season and have been covering spreads by an average of 8.5 points.

In recent years, they have done well against the spread versus Alabama, covering in four of the last five Iron Bowls. This includes last year’s 26-21 loss to the eventual National Champions, but they still managed to beat the 10-point spread.

Add those stats in with the Cam Newton / Gus Malzahn factor. It’s been a match made in heaven between the junior QB and the second-year offensive coordinator, who have the team scoring 42.8 points per game.

Newton has already proved he can win under pressure, going through a tough SEC schedule with no losses and staying focused in his last game against Georgia considering all the off-field drama that the program was dealing with.

Expect the drama to escalate even further with the hype surrounding the Iron Bowl, but Malzahn will ensure that his QB and the rest of his guys on offense maintain their focus and keep up their up-tempo pace that has frustrated opponents all season long.

In other Tigers news, Auburn DL Mike Blanc and DE Michael Goggans will only be suspended for the first half.

                            Why Alabama will cover

Believe it or not, ruining Auburn’s shot at a national title would, for some Crimson Tide fans, eclipse their win over Texas last year. That is how much Alabama hates Auburn.

One important factor to keep in mind is that the Iron Bowl is in Tuscaloosa. Alabama is simply a different team at home, with both of its losses coming on the road. In fact, the last time the Crimson Tide hosted Auburn at Bryant Denney they blew them out 36-0.

Auburn has also seemed vulnerable when dealing with tough defenses. Louisiana State did a good job of keeping the Tigers well below their season scoring average. Alabama’s defense is just as talented, (if not better) than LSU’s.

The key will be to contain Newton, and the Tide have done well against two teams that had similar offenses in Mississippi State and Ole Miss. Mind you, their talent is not on par with Auburn, but they got live game-time reps and the schemes were perfectly executed, holding both teams to 10 points each. Also remember that they did a good job against Tim Tebow in last year’s SEC title game.

The Crimson Tide are favorites for a reason and they have the experience and motivation to not only make their fans happy, but make fans in Boise Idaho happy as well.

                            Notes on the total

The total opened at 58 and has moved to 59 at most books. Auburn has been a good over bet this season going 7-4 on totals and it is currently riding a three-game over streak.

However, if you are expecting a close contest, keep in mind that Auburn games that have been decided by a touchdown or less have gone under three out of five times. Also, the over hasn’t hit in the Iron Bowl since 2005.

Consensus opinion is pretty much split on the total, meaning that oddsmakers have done their job.

                            Weather

Chilly and wet is what players will have to deal with. Highs of 50 are expected with northwest winds around 10 to 15 mph. There is a 70 percent chance of rain by kickoff.

                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
