Memphis looks for 4-0 start vs. LSU

        LSU TIGERS (2-1)

        at MEMPHIS TIGERS (3-0)

Global Sports Challenge – Tupelo, MS
        Tip-off: Sunday, 5:00 p.m. EDT
        Line: TBD

It will be Tiger vs. Tiger Sunday afternoon in Tupelo, MS when undefeated Memphis takes on 2-1 LSU. Memphis is already averaging 90 PPG this season as slender swingman Wesley Witherspoon (14.3 PPG, 6.3 RPG) leads a quartet of scorers averaging double figures for Josh Pastner’s squad. Freshman guard Joe Jackson (10.7 PPG) is stepping out and into the starting guard rotation, leading his squad in assists (3.7 APG), but must learn how to protect the ball. His assist-to-turnover ratio in his first three games is about 1-to-1 (11 assists, 10 turnovers). Not a number that will endear you to your head coach. The Memphis defense started off very strong against its first two opponents, but got a little generous against Northwestern State, allowing the Demons to shoot 38% from beyond the arc and nearly 43% overall.

LSU is trying to rebuild things following a season where it finished 2-14 in SEC league play. That was in stark contrast to the 13-3 conference mark that they posted the previous season. If the 2010-11 campaign is any indication, then the bounce back is a work in progress. Both LSU and Memphis have a common opponent on this young season, that is Northwestern State. Memphis beat the Demons by 15 and never trailed in the contest. LSU trailed the Demons 38-34 before a late first-half rush got them the lead they wouldn’t relinquish en route to an eight-point victory. Following that contest, LSU was stunned at home, losing to Nicholls State 62-53. It was the first homecourt loss for LSU to an in-state rival in 82 games, when Louisiana Tech defeated LSU in December of 1988. Freshman Andre Stringer leads LSU in scoring and assists through three games (17.5 PPG, 4.0 APG), while junior forward Storm Warren has been reigning on the glass, averaging a team-best 9.0 RPG to go with his 6.0 PPG.

Memphis did not thrive in the favorite role last year, going 7-17 ATS (29%). Memphis was also a wretched 3-9 ATS in non-conference games last season. LSU went 1-17 SU as an underdog last season, but covered the spread in seven of those 18 games.

NHL Odds: Flames open trip in Detroit

The Western Conference-leading Detroit Red Wings conclude a successful six-game homestand with a Sunday matinee against a flickering Calgary Flames team that has dropped seven of its last nine contests. This will be Calgary’s first stop on a five-game road swing.

The Red Wings had their four-game winning streak snapped Friday as the Minnesota Wild handed them a 4-3 overtime setback. The Wings closed as a hefty 230 home favorites, with the combined seven goals flying ‘over’ the 5 ½-goal closing total.

The ‘over’ is now 9-8 in Detroit’s first 17 games this season and 21-7 in its last 28 home encounters dating to last season.

The Wings have collected nine of a possible 10 points on this homestand to improve their ledger at Joe Louis Arena to a sizzling 8-1-1-1.

Mike Babcock’s contingent dropped the game against Minnesota despite out-shooting the Wild, 44-27. The Wings fought off all three Minnesota power plays and rank eighth in that category by killing off 85.3 percent of the oppositions chances with the man advantage.

The Red Wings have now scored three goals or more in 13 of their first 17 contests, including the last seven in a row. The onslaught has enabled the team to rank first in offense with an average of 3.6 goals per game. The Wings are managing an average of 33.2 shots on goal per outing, which ranks second.

Keeping the puck out of their own net hasn’t been too much of a problem for the Wings either. They are allowing an average of 2.5 goals per game, which ranks seventh in the league.

Jimmy Howard has started 13 of Detroit’s 17 games and has registered a sparkling 10-1-1-1 ledger with a 2.34 GAA and 2.34 save percentage. He also has pitched one shutout.

Detroit has already defeated the Flames in the two meetings this season, including a 4-2 victory on Oct. 21 as a 185 NHL betting favorite in the lone home game. The victory lifted Detroit’s home record against the Flames to 9-3 in the last 12 encounters.

The combined six goals skipped above the 5 ½-goal closing total, enabling the ‘over’ to improve to 7-1 in the last eight series meetings with Calgary at Joe Louis Arena.

Calgary snapped a four-game losing skid Friday by blasting the defending champion Chicago Blackhawks as a 125 home underdog, 7-2. The combined nine goals soared above the 5 ½-goal closing total, leaving the ‘over’ 10-8 in Calgary’s first 18 efforts.

The Flames have scored and allowed an identical 54 goals this season. Five of Calgary’s last seven losses have been by one goal.

The Flames outshot the Blackhawks, 36-33, and notched two more power play goals in five opportunities. Though Calgary has now scored at least one goal with the man advantage in eight of its last 10 games, the club still ranks a poor 19th in that category with a 15.5 percent success rate.

Mikka Kiprusoff registered the victory against the Hawks to raise his record to 7-9-0-0. He has a 2.70 GAA, a .907 save percentage and two shutouts.

Brent Sutter’s troops rank 13th offensively with an average of 2.9 goals per game, and 21st defensively by yielding 3.0 GPG.

Calgary forward Olli Jokinen was suspended for three games without pay by the NHL for cross-checking Phoenix forward Wojtek Wolski in the head. He missed Friday’s win at Chicago and will also miss Sunday’s game at Detroit.

The Flames continue their five-game road excursion Monday with a trip to Madison Square Garden to play the New York Rangers. The Wings will head to Atlanta for a Wednesday night contest against the Thrashers.

NBA Betting: Kings host New Orleans Hornets

Southwest Division leading New Orleans (10-1 straight up, 8-2-1 against the spread) begins a four-game West Coast road trip with Sunday’s matchup versus Sacramento (4-7 SU, 3-8 ATS). Despite their early season success, the Hornets are in the midst of a five-player trade with Toronto.

Both teams have agreed in principle that would send Peja Stojakovic and Jerryd Bayless to the Raptors for Jarrett Jack, David Andersen and Marcus Banks. The only issue holding the deal back is the amount of cash New Orleans would send Toronto. Stojakovic is no longer in the Hornets’ starting rotation and he is in the last year of a pricey contract, while Bayless is a backup point guard after being acquired from Portland.

Don Best's Real-Time Odds installed New Orleans as a 5 ½-point road favorite over Sacramento, with the total set at 200 ½. However, this game is circled due to the unknown status of the potential trade.

NBA TV will provide coverage of Sunday’s matchup beginning at 3:00 p.m. PT from Sacramento’s Arco Arena.

New Orleans enters this contest riding a two-game SU winning streak after upending Cleveland Friday night as nine-point home ‘chalk,’ 108-101. The combined 209 points soared past the 193 ½-point closing total, helping the ‘over’ cash the fourth consecutive contest. The Hornets are now 0-2-1 ATS their last three games.

New Orleans took control of the contest by outscoring the Cavaliers in the second quarter, 36-15. The Hornets limited Cleveland to just 35 percent shooting, but allowed an opponent to reach triple digits in scoring for the first time this season. New Orleans finished the contest by shooting 46 percent (39-of-85) from the field.

Power forward David West had a season-high 34 points along with 11 rebounds in the victory, while shooting guard Marco Belinelli added 20 and five assists. Point guard Chris Paul contributed 15 and 10 in 34 minutes of action.

Sacramento snapped a six-game SU losing streak by beating New Jersey Friday in a low-scoring affair as a three-point home favorite, 86-81. The combined 167 points never seriously threatened the 197 ½-point closing total. The ‘under’ is now 5-1 in the Kings’ last six outings. Sacramento had failed to cover seven straight matchups before upending the Nets.

The Kings defense limited New Jersey to just 35 points in the second half, helping them prevail despite entering halftime trailing for the 11th straight time this season. Sacramento won the rebounding battle, 45-39, while shooting 43 percent (33-of-77) from the field.

Point guard Tyreke Evans paced the offense with 20 points on 8-of-21 shooting, while forward Carl Landry added 15 and six rebounds. Beno Udrih added 12 points off the bench, and guard Luther Head contributed 10 and five.

The road team has won the last three meetings in the New Orleans-Sacramento series, but this is the first matchup this season between the teams. The Kings have covered the previous nine games in this series, eight times when listed as an underdog.

New Orleans is 10-2-1 ATS its last 13 games overall. The Hornets follow this contest with road games against the Los Angeles Clippers, Utah and Portland.

Sacramento has struggled to a 1-7 ATS ledger its previous eight outings overall, and is just 9-26-1 versus the number its last 36 home endeavors. The Kings play Utah and the Los Angeles Clippers on the road following this matchup.

Early NBA betting trends home and away

The National Basketball Association’s regular season is less than a month old, but there are already some useful betting trends popping up on the pro hardwood. Most teams around the league are just 12 games into an 82-game regular-season slate that will extend all the way through mid-April.

While most people will focus on straight up wins and losses, there are some surprising numbers concerning which teams are covering or not covering against the NBA spread.

New Orleans is currently tied atop the Southwest Division standings with San Antonio, but the Hornets are a stellar 8-1-1 ATS while the Spurs are a modest 6-3-1. New Orleans maintains a solid 5-1 ATS record on its home court, while going 3-0-1 on the road.

The Hornets begin a four-game West Coast road trip starting with Sunday’s matchup with Sacramento.

Speaking of the Kings, they are a great team to fade early this season. Sacramento is languishing with a 3-7 SU record, with an even worse 2-8 ATS ledger. The Kings are a dismal 0-6 versus the number when playing at home.

Another team to fade when playing on its home hardwood is Atlanta, a squad that is currently in second place in the Southeast Division with an 8-4 SU record. The Hawks are 3-3 SU at home, but 0-6 ATS. Atlanta has a chance to garner its first ATS home triumph with upcoming games against Dallas, Boston and Washington. While the Hawks are struggling ATS at home, they sport a 5-1 ATS record when playing on the road.

Boston, atop the Atlantic Division standings, sports a 5-0 SU record at TD Garden while going just 2-3 ATS. The ‘over’ has also gone a solid 4-1 when the team is playing on its home court. The Celtics, who host Oklahoma City on Friday, have fared much better on the road concerning the number with a 5-1 ledger.

Portland appears to be another squad to keep your wagering eye on, especially when the team is playing at home. The Trail Blazers are 4-1 SU and ATS at Rose Garden, with the ‘under’ going 4-1. Portland continues a three-game homestand with games against Utah and New Orleans before embarking on a four-game East Coast road trip.

Los Angeles has two basketball teams, but while most of the focus is on the defending champion Lakers you might want to pay more attention to the Clippers at the betting window.

The Clippers are once again putting a stranglehold on the Pacific Division basement compliments of a 1-5 SU and ATS home record. This pitiful franchise has an upcoming three-game homestand against New York on Saturday followed by New Orleans and Sacramento to help pad your bankroll.

Golden State is a surprising team to back that has slid comfortably under the radar early this season. The Warriors are an unblemished 5-0 SU on their home court, and 4-1 ATS. Golden State has also been a solid play concerning totals, with the ‘under’ going 8-3 overall that includes a 5-1 road record.

Lastly, Oklahoma City is a nondescript 4-3 SU on its home court and a fade-worth 2-5 ATS. But the biggest thing when considering wagering on the Thunder has been the totals. The ‘over’ is a stellar 10-1, including a 6-1 record at Oklahoma City Arena.

Coach Scott Brooks’ team concludes a two-day, two-game road trip with Saturday’s matchup at Milwaukee before returning home to play Minnesota and Dallas.
