Bettors' best friend: Thursday's wagering tips

    Lines to watch

The Miami Dolphins opened as 2-point favorites at home to the Chicago Bears with the total at 39.5. Miami has dropped to -1 or -1.5 at most books with the over/under now at 40.5.

UNLV was set as a 20.5-point underdog at the open against Air Force, but is now pegged at +19.

    Weather to watch

UCLA at Washington – Temperatures in the 40s with a 50 percent chance of rain.

    Who’s hot

Miami Dolphins have covered in four of their last five games.

Under bettors have cashed in on six of the last seven Chicago Bears games.

Montreal Canadiens have won four straight games.

    Who’s not

The Washington Huskies are riding an 0-4-1 slump against the spread.

Indiana Pacers have lost four of their last six straight up and against the spread.

Orlando Magic have dropped six of seven against the number.

Boston Bruins are 3-7 in their last 10 home games.

    Key stat

33 – number of sacks the Chicago Bears have allowed this season which is more than any other team in the league. However, Jay Cutler has taken just two sacks in the team’s last two games.

    Game of the day

Chicago Bears at Miami Dolphins (-1.5, 40.5)

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Joe Berger (knee), Miami Dolphins – Berger, Miami’s starting center, is officially out for Thursday’s game against the Bears, pushing backup Cory Procter into duty. Procter worked with projected starting quarterback Tyler Thigpen over the last few days and the two are also familiar with each other from their time working with the subs.

    Notable quotable

''It's definitely a challenge, but no excuses made, no excuses accepted. We're professionals. We knew that we had a Thursday night game coming into the season and that we were going to have a short week. For myself, it's just about getting your rest at night, getting up in the morning and getting ready to work.'' - Dolpins quarterback Tyler Thigpen on playing Thursday against the Bears.

    Notes and tips

Washington Huskies quarterback Jake Locker was cleared to play Thursday against UCLA after Tuesday's practice. Locker missed his club's Nov. 6 game against Oregon with a broken rib and didn't practice for two weeks after that. He participated fully in this week's workouts and has 1678 passing yards and 253 rushing yards this season.

Orlando Magic point guard Jameer Nelson’s ankle is still bothering him. He didn’t practice Tuesday because is swelled up, but the team is hoping he’ll be able to play against the Suns as long as he takes it easy during Wednesday’s practice. Nelson's averaging 14.5 points and 5.6 assists per game.

The New Jersey Devils dropped Travis Zajac from the top line and replaced him with Dainius Zubrus, who should center Ilya Kovalchuk and Alexander Vasyunov when the Devils visit Toronto on Thursday. Zajac will play with David Clarkson and Brian Rolston. New Jersey has been shut out three times over the last six games, so the line juggling is hardly a surprise.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Phoenix Suns at Orlando Magic (-9, 203)

The Orlando Magic are expected to welcome J.J. Redick back to the lineup on Thursday after an MRI revealed no structural damage in his aching back. Magic supporters are hoping that after he sat out Monday’s game and didn’t practice Tuesday that some time away from the court helped him find his jumper.

The Magic’s normally lethal outside shooter is hitting just 27 percent of his shots from the floor and only 12 percent of his trey efforts while averaging 4.4 points per game.

“I don’t think there’s any question, he’s at a very high frustration level with his shooting,” Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said. “You can physically see it when he misses open shots and things like that, but the thing's the same, just go out and play hard, and play with great energy and enthusiasm, and try to relax a little bit on the offensive end of the floor.”

It’s not just Redick. Rashard Lewis, Chris Duhon and Ryan Anderson have struggled early this year too, though Orlando has won two straight with both checking in under the posted total. However, the club is only 3-7 against the spread on the year and Phoenix putting up a bunch of points lately.

      Pick: Phoenix

Denver Nuggets at Portland Trail Blazers (-3, 203)

Brandon Roy underwent an MRI on his injured left knee today, leaving the Portland Trail Blazers holding their collective breath as they wait for the results.

Roy limped off the court during Portland’s 107-87 loss to the New Orleans Hornets over the weekend and didn’t play in Monday’s win over Memphis. However, for one night at least, the Blazers had a suitable replacement for their superstar.

      Wesley Matthews scored a career-high 30 points to lead Portland to a 100-99 as a 1-point favorite.

"I thought tonight he let the offense come to him," Blazers head coach Nate McMillan told reporters of Matthews. "I just thought he brought energy to the floor tonight. The reason for him going in that line-up was to see if he can bring that toughness on the defensive end of the floor.”

Nice game for Matthews, but can he keep it going? Probably, for one game at least against an awful Denver defense that’s giving up more than 104 points a night.

      Pick: Trail Blazers

            Friday, November 19

            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
            --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nashville Predators at Montreal Canadiens (-170, 5)

Montreal defenseman P.K. Subban is one of the Canadiens’ key blue liners now that Andrei Markov is out of the lineup indefinitely, but the youngster is already developing a bit of a reputation around the league.

Subban picked up an assist and six penalty minutes during Montreal’s 3-0 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday, the Canadiens’ fourth straight victory.

"He's (Subban) a guy that's come in the league and hasn't earned respect," Flyers captain Mike Richards told reporters. "It's just frustrating to see a young guy like that come in here and so much as think that he's better than a lot of people. Hopefully someone on their team addresses it, because, I'm not saying I'm going to do it but something might happen to him if he continues to be that cocky."

Maybe that’s true, but the Habs are counting on Subban to play with that kind of edge, because he’s a lot less effective if he backs off. As it stands, Subban has a goal and seven assists to go along with a plus-6 rating and if he can keep that up, Montreal won’t worry much about how “cocky” he is on the ice.

            Pick: Canadiens

New Jersey Devils at Toronto Maple Leafs (-130, 5.5)

The Toronto Maple Leafs finally snapped an eight-game losing skid when they erupted for four power-play goals in the second period against the Nashville Predators to book a 5-4 victory.

It was the offensive outburst that the team desperately needed, especially after the club fell behind 3-0 midway through the first period. Kris Versteeg buried two of those goals and Clarke MacArthur added three assists in the second period to jumpstart a power play that had managed just three goals over the club’s losing streak.

“That was a long three weeks,” MacArthur told reporters following the game. “We’re really excited. We want to put a streak together now.”

They’ll have a good opportunity to do just that against the Devils. Toronto goaltender J.S. Giguere left the game late with a suspected groin injury and Jonas Gustavsson came on in relief. Giguere didn’t participate in Wednesday’s practice and Gustavsson is expected to start against New Jersey, giving Leafs supporters the change they’ve been looking for. He’ll be ready to go.

            Pick: Leafs

                Friday's six-pack

                NFL trends for Week 11.........
-- Raiders are 0-7 vs spread in game after their last seven byes.

-- Rams covered last five non-divisional home games.

-- Seahawks are 2-11 in last 13 games as a road underdog.

-- Browns covered seven of their last ten road games.

-- Colts covered five of last six as an underdog.

-- Packers are 5-2 vs spread in game after their last seven byes.

                *****************************************

Friday's List of 13: What we're looking for this weekend........

                13) This Saturday used to be Rivalry Saturday, the best college football day of the year. But the season has been stretched out now, making next week Rivalry Saturday. Stanford-Cal and North Carolina-NC State are the only rivalry games I can find that are still being played this weekend.

                12) Favre Bowl IV could be the last one, as Green Bay tries to pound the last nails into the Purple Coffin. Coming off a bye, Packers would seem to have the edge.

                11) Why would Indiana sell off a home football game with Penn State, and let it be played in Maryland? That is an admission that your program is second-rate.

                10) Houston Texans had one of the more painful losses in recent memory Sunday, letting Jaguars go 64 yards in two plays covering 0:08; QB Schaub missed Wednesday’s practice with a bursitis problem in his knee. Beating the Jets in the Swamp ain’t going to be easy, and if they lose, 4-6 ain’t going to look too good for coach Kubiak.

                9) Northwestern-Illinois was shaping up as good game in Wrigley Field, but Wildcat QB Persa blew out his Achilles tendon last week. Do they have an adequate backup?

                8) Seems like every year the Colt-Patriot game is in Week 10. Its at 4:15 this year, not at night. Colts are awful banged-up, while Patriots seem to be getting better.

                7) Looking forward to some of the first holiday basketball tournaments, seeing what teams emerge as better/worse than we thought.

                6) Utah got waxed by TCU, then got hammered again by 5-5 Notre Dame, now they visit 7-3 San Diego State. Utes need a win to avoid going to the Poinsettia Bowl, not that San Diego is a bad place to be in September.

                5) Oakland Raiders are tied for first place; it’ll seem like old teams when they visit Pittsburgh Sunday. Steelers’ OL is messed up. This could be a surprisingly good game.

                4) Ohio State is one of two Big 11 teams with a winning record against Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz (Northwestern is other). Buckeyes-Hawkeyes is one of the better games this Saturday.

                3) Todd Haley’s Chiefs host the Cardinals, the team that made Todd Haley a head coaching candidate. Arizona isn’t good on the road. Chiefs lost their last two games, but are still tied atop AFC West. Interesting.

                2) Texas A&M is very hot right now, winning their last four games. Nebraska visits Kyle Field Saturday. Do Huskers have enough balance to win a tough road game?

                1) Michael Vick has a legit shot at being MVP of the NFL this season. No matter what you think of the guy, he is playing better than he ever has, and its turning into an amazing story. Eagles-Giants will be fun to watch Sunday night.

Maryland had only 8 turnovers in 79-70 loss to Pitt last night, but made just 14-30 from line, 2-14 from arc, as their inexperience showed. Terps had four starters play 30+ minutes, but they got about three more hours of rest than Illinois ater Illini lost in OT to Texas, when they put Horns on line 44 times (Illini took 29). Would be bitter pill for the senior-laden Illini to leave New York with two losses.

Texas freshman Thompson proved to be quality shotblocker; Texas was just 25-44 from line, 3-12 from arc, but they outhustled Illinois in an OT upset win. Pitt was lucky Maryland couldn't shoot last night; only one starter on Pitt played more than 28 minutes. Panthers feel at home being in Manhattan since they recruit NYC area heavily.

Davidson missed first 19 treys yesterday, was still down by just 10 in second half to West Virginia yesterday, before losing by 2; Wildcats put West Viginia on line 49 times in 84-70 loss. Big game for Nebraska club that was 0-10 from arc, 13-23 from line in dismal offensive effort- they cannot go 0-3 in this event, or heat on coach Sadler will get worse.

Hofstra got crushed by 44 yesterday, and their starters still logged lot of minutes; now they run into Western Kentucky team that lost last night to Minnesota by 18, but that also won by 28 at St Joe's last week. CAA underdogs are 6-5 against spread so far this season. Sun Belt favorites are 2-4 against the spread.

West Virginia had three players foul out in 84-70 win over well-coached Davidson team that couldn't shoot straight (2-22 from arc); WVa needs a star to emerge to pull it thru tight spots. Vanderbilt held Nebraska to 35% from floor in 59-49 win Thursday; they've got three starters back from LY's 34-9 team that lost in first round of NCAAs.

North Carolina shot 56% from floor, made 12-17 treys in easy jog over Hofstra; Carolina missed 31 shots from floor, had 20 offensive boards; they'll get much stiffer test from Minnesota club that hung 95 last nite, shooting 62% from floor, making 8-15 treys vs good WKU team. ACC favorites are 5-1 against the spread away from home.
