    Daily Sports Roundup: November 18

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: Washington hosts UCLA on the gridiron, college hoops hits Madison Square Garden, and the Magic look for a home win over the Suns.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

There are three college football games on the Thursday schedule, with cupcake Georgia State at No. 10 Alabama, Air Force at UNLV, and UCLA at Washington. The Bruins (4-5 SU, 4-5 ATS) are coming off a 17-14 home win over Oregon State in their last game, with Johnathan Franklin rushing for 100 yards and a touchdown. The Huskies (3-6 SU, 2-7 ATS) were throttled 53-16 on the road by Oregon last game, with QB Jake Locker on the sidelines with a rib injury. Oddsmakers have Washington pegged as a 2-point home favorite for Thursday, with the total for that matchup set at 53.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up three games on Thursday night, with the Clippers at Indiana, Denver at Portland, and Phoenix at Orlando. The Magic sit at 7-3 SU but just 3-7 ATS after beating Memphis 89-72 at home in their last game on Monday night. Vince Carter led the way for Orlando with 19 points in that victory, while Dwight Howard picked up 18 points and 14 rebounds. Jameer Nelson had 11 points in the contest. The Magic and Suns split their season series last year, with each team picking up their victory at home; Orlando won 122-100 as a 7.5-point favorite; Phoenix won 106-103 as a 3-point favorite.

As well, games involving ranked teams on the college basketball schedule for Tuesday include Coastal Carolina vs. No. 20 Georgetown, N.C. A&T vs. No. 9 Florida, Hofstra vs. No. 8 North Carolina, Jackson State vs. No. 17 Baylor, Western Illinois vs. No. 15 Missouri, Presbyterian vs. No. 3 Kansas State, No. 13 Illinois vs. Texas, and Maryland vs. No. 5 Pittsburgh. Those last two contests are part of the annual 2K Sports Classic Benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer and will be played in New York at Madison Square Garden. Those four teams are a combined 11-0 SU and also 6-3 ATS to begin the year.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are five games on tap around the National Hockey League on Thursday, with Florida at Boston, New Jersey at Toronto, Nashville at Montreal, San Jose at Dallas, and Tampa Bay at Philadelphia. The Lightning and Flyers have met once already this season, with Tampa Bay pulling out a 3-2 road win in Philadelphia back on October 14. Steve Stamkos, Dominic Moore, and Pavel Kubina provided the goals for the Lightning in that contest, while Dan Ellis stopped 24 of 26 Philly shots. Nikolay Zherdev and Danny Briere replied for the Flyers in that losing cause early in the season.

Bettors' best friend: Thursday's wagering tips

      Lines to watch

The Miami Dolphins opened as 2-point favorites at home to the Chicago Bears with the total at 39.5. Miami has dropped to -1 or -1.5 at most books with the over/under now at 40.5.

UNLV was set as a 20.5-point underdog at the open against Air Force, but is now pegged at +19.

      Weather to watch

UCLA at Washington – Temperatures in the 40s with a 50 percent chance of rain.

      Who’s hot

Miami Dolphins have covered in four of their last five games.

Under bettors have cashed in on six of the last seven Chicago Bears games.

Montreal Canadiens have won four straight games.

      Who’s not

The Washington Huskies are riding an 0-4-1 slump against the spread.

Indiana Pacers have lost four of their last six straight up and against the spread.

Orlando Magic have dropped six of seven against the number.

Boston Bruins are 3-7 in their last 10 home games.

      Key stat

33 – number of sacks the Chicago Bears have allowed this season which is more than any other team in the league. However, Jay Cutler has taken just two sacks in the team’s last two games.

      Game of the day

Chicago Bears at Miami Dolphins (-1.5, 40.5)

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Joe Berger (knee), Miami Dolphins – Berger, Miami’s starting center, is officially out for Thursday’s game against the Bears, pushing backup Cory Procter into duty. Procter worked with projected starting quarterback Tyler Thigpen over the last few days and the two are also familiar with each other from their time working with the subs.

      Notable quotable

''It's definitely a challenge, but no excuses made, no excuses accepted. We're professionals. We knew that we had a Thursday night game coming into the season and that we were going to have a short week. For myself, it's just about getting your rest at night, getting up in the morning and getting ready to work.'' - Dolpins quarterback Tyler Thigpen on playing Thursday against the Bears.

      Notes and tips

Washington Huskies quarterback Jake Locker was cleared to play Thursday against UNLV after Tuesday's practice. Locker missed his club's Nov. 6 game against Oregon with a broken rib and didn't practice for two weeks after that. He participated fully in this week's workouts and has 1678 passing yards and 253 rushing yards this season.

Orlando Magic point guard Jameer Nelson’s ankle is still bothering him. He didn’t practice Tuesday because is swelled up, but the team is hoping he’ll be able to play against the Suns as long as he takes it easy during Wednesday’s practice. Nelson's averaging 14.5 points and 5.6 assists per game.

The New Jersey Devils dropped Travis Zajac from the top line and replaced him with Dainius Zubrus, who should center Ilya Kovalchuk and Alexander Vasyunov when the Devils visit Toronto on Thursday. Zajac will play with David Clarkson and Brian Rolston. New Jersey has been shut out three times over the last six games, so the line juggling is hardly a surprise.

        Thursday's six-pack

        Random basketball observations........
-- UAlbany, my alma mater, lost by 26 at Georgia Tech last night; it was 49-19 at the half. As long as the guarantee check cleared.....

-- Back to earth for Kennesaw State; after whipping Georgia Tech by 17 last week, they lost at home to Chattanooga last night.

-- Impressive show by Iowa State, which waxed Drake 91-43. Drake had won its last two visits to Hilton Coliseum.

-- Most fun NBA game on Full Court package last night was Clippers-Minnesota. Lot of good young players on both sides......

-- Reggie Theus Jr is a 10th-grader playing at Fairfax High in LA. If he is half as good as his dad was, he's a hell of a player.

-- Tough news for Greg Oden, who needs another knee operation and will not play ball this year, either. Hope he's putting his money away.

        ******************************************

        Thursday's List of 13:

        13) Michigan State—Their coach had a heart attack an hour after a game in which they won on a fake FG in OT. Guy is back coaching. Football people are tough. I think that’s the word for it.

        12) Arkansas—Some Hog fans are concerned that when Ryan Mallett’s name is announced on Senior Day, that Coach Petrino will bolt for another job. Why would they think a thing like that?

        11) Wisconsin—Why is Bret Bielema acting like a WWE villain? Since when does Wisconsin run up scores on hapless programs? Badger AD Alvarez is a former coach; he should talk Bielema out of becoming a heel.

        10) Oklahoma State—Not sure about the rule that says a kid can become a millionaire in baseball and still be an amateur in football, but a kid who plays only football can’t take a dime from anyone. Guess that’s the way it has to be, but it doesn’t seem right.

        9) Nebraska—Passed for 323 yards in win at Oklahoma State, have thrown for total of 372 yards in three games since. Needing OT to win at Iowa State isn’t a strong statement.

        8) Ohio State—Have you seen the layout at Wrigley Field for Illinois-Northwestern game? Back of one end zone has to be within a foot of the rightfield wall, which is, um…..brick. Receivers should just love that.

        7) Alabama— About 15 years ago, there was a waitress in a bar downtown who was from Alabama. She didn’t seem to care about sports much, but I was told that EVERYONE in Alabama chose sides for the Iron Bowl. So one day when I was ordering, I just asked her, “Alabama or Auburn?” She glared at me like she was insulted and said, “Well, Auburn of course.” And stormed off. So there ya go.

        6) Stanford—They re-did Stanford Stadium few years ago, cutting capacity almost in half, but stadium still wasn’t close to being filled for Arizona game, even though both teams are really good. Will they have trouble keeping Harbaugh on The Farm?

        5) LSU—Did you know that LSU and Georgia Tech are only I-A football teams that are allowed to wear white jerseys at home?

        4) Boise State—Should the Pac-10 have added Boise instead of Utah? I often ponder questions like this, which may or may not be a good thing.

        3) TCU—One of Frogs’ assistant coaches had chest pains during game last week and was taken to hospital- he’s going to be OK, which is good news. San Diego State led in last minute at Missouri, so TCU’s 40-35 win over the Aztecs last week isn’t as bad as lot of nitwits think.

        2) Oregon—It’s an underrated odd fact that Chip Kelly and Miss State coach Mullen are both from New Hampshire. Not often you associate the Granite State with football.

        1) Auburn—Cam Newton was totally unstoppable last week. I fully expect an Alabama alum to serve him with a subpoena at the coin toss of the Iron Bowl, which would prevent him from playing. It might be the only way to stop him.

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Phoenix Suns at Orlando Magic (-9, 203)

The Orlando Magic are expected to welcome J.J. Redick back to the lineup on Thursday after an MRI revealed no structural damage in his aching back. Magic supporters are hoping that after he sat out Monday’s game and didn’t practice Tuesday that some time away from the court helped him find his jumper.

The Magic’s normally lethal outside shooter is hitting just 27 percent of his shots from the floor and only 12 percent of his trey efforts while averaging 4.4 points per game.

“I don’t think there’s any question, he’s at a very high frustration level with his shooting,” Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said. “You can physically see it when he misses open shots and things like that, but the thing's the same, just go out and play hard, and play with great energy and enthusiasm, and try to relax a little bit on the offensive end of the floor.”

It’s not just Redick. Rashard Lewis, Chris Duhon and Ryan Anderson have struggled early this year too, though Orlando has won two straight with both checking in under the posted total. However, the club is only 3-7 against the spread on the year and Phoenix putting up a bunch of points lately.

            Pick: Phoenix

Denver Nuggets at Portland Trail Blazers (-3, 203)

Brandon Roy underwent an MRI on his injured left knee today, leaving the Portland Trail Blazers holding their collective breath as they wait for the results.

Roy limped off the court during Portland’s 107-87 loss to the New Orleans Hornets over the weekend and didn’t play in Monday’s win over Memphis. However, for one night at least, the Blazers had a suitable replacement for their superstar.

            Wesley Matthews scored a career-high 30 points to lead Portland to a 100-99 as a 1-point favorite.

"I thought tonight he let the offense come to him," Blazers head coach Nate McMillan told reporters of Matthews. "I just thought he brought energy to the floor tonight. The reason for him going in that line-up was to see if he can bring that toughness on the defensive end of the floor.”

Nice game for Matthews, but can he keep it going? Probably, for one game at least against an awful Denver defense that’s giving up more than 104 points a night.

            Pick: Trail Blazers

Florida State beat Isiah Thomas' FIU team 82-62 LY; Seminoles are 3-0 this year, winning by 20-24-25 against collection of stiffs (won by 24 at NC-Greensboro. Home side won all three South Florida-Central Florida games; Bulls lost 71-63 in last visit here. USF lost by 7 at home to a good Southern Miss team last week, then was shaky in beating St Francis by 3. Knights have all five starters back from LY, have beaten couple of stiffs so far.

Arizona has four starters back from 16-15/10-8 team that started couple freshman and a soph; they won opener vs Idaho State by 48, leading by 26 at half. Wildcats won last meeting with New Mexico St. 102-87 four years ago. Aggies have three starters back 22-12/11-5 team that already has a road win, by 16 at UL-Lafayette.

Denver went 0-3 in Portland last week, losing by 16-12-11 points; they scored only 53 ppg in those games, despite having 4 starters back from 19-13/10-8 team. Virginia has six newcomers, six holdovers from Bennett's first team; he got rid of guys who didn't fit his program. Stanford has seven freshmen, no seniors, but four returning starters- the freshmen are going to take lot of the starters' minutes away, which creates chemistry issues. Cardinal won last three games vs Virginia, by 16-1-5 points.

West Virginia lost three starters from LY's Final Four team; they're going to miss Butler a lot; question is can guys who were support players last year become stars now? WVa lost 68-65 on neutral floor to Davidson two years ago, back when Wildcats had Curry. Davidson lost its opener 69-64 at Penn; they're well-coached, but physically overmatched here.

Vanderbilt lost PG and C from LY's 24-9/12-4 team, but they're deeper and will be able to play faster with Ogilvy. New PG Tinsley getting rave reviews early.

Hofstra starts three senors who return from 19-15/10-8 team; they've got star player in 6-3 G Jenkins and new coach in former BC assistant Cassara, who should be familiar with Tar Heels from days in the ACC. North Carolina lost three starters from 20-17/5-11 team; Barnes is one of highest-rated freshmen in recent years. PG play was an issue last year.

Western Kentucky won by 28 at St Joe's in its opener; Hilltoppers have three starters back from 21-13/12-6 team, plus they add Padilla, who is Oklahoma transfer. Minnesota already beat couple of decent mid-majors at home, Wofford by 14, Siena by 7; Gophers have four starters back from LY's 21-14/9-9 team.

Charlotte fired Lutz, a pretty good coach, then hired Ohio St assistant Major, who lost his opener to Gardner-Webb; 49ers have four starters back from 19-12/9-7 team. George Mason has all five starters back from 17-15/12-6 team- they won their opener, by 13 points over Harvard.

Maryland lost three starters from 24-9/13-3 team; they're already 3-0, but only beat Charleston by a point at home- they've got six new guys on this year's team. Pittsburgh returns 86% of its scoring and 91% of its rebounding from LY's team; they're also 3-0, beating pretty good Rhode Island team by 8.

Morehead State has an NBA player in senior C Faried, who was second in country in rebounding LY; they've got three starters back from 24-11 team that went 15-3 in OVC. NC-Wilmington lost by 17 at Florida, then needed OT to beat Liberty; they're rebuilding after going 9-22/5-13 and then changing coaches.

Iona has all five starters back from LY's 21-10 team, but they went 0-3 in tourney in Cleveland, allowing 75 ppg, losing games by 1-10-2 points. Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
                    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nashville Predators at Montreal Canadiens (-170, 5)

Montreal defenseman P.K. Subban is one of the Canadiens’ key blue liners now that Andrei Markov is out of the lineup indefinitely, but the youngster is already developing a bit of a reputation around the league.

Subban picked up an assist and six penalty minutes during Montreal’s 3-0 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday, the Canadiens’ fourth straight victory.

"He's (Subban) a guy that's come in the league and hasn't earned respect," Flyers captain Mike Richards told reporters. "It's just frustrating to see a young guy like that come in here and so much as think that he's better than a lot of people. Hopefully someone on their team addresses it, because, I'm not saying I'm going to do it but something might happen to him if he continues to be that cocky."

Maybe that’s true, but the Habs are counting on Subban to play with that kind of edge, because he’s a lot less effective if he backs off. As it stands, Subban has a goal and seven assists to go along with a plus-6 rating and if he can keep that up, Montreal won’t worry much about how “cocky” he is on the ice.

                    Pick: Canadiens

New Jersey Devils at Toronto Maple Leafs (-130, 5.5)

The Toronto Maple Leafs finally snapped an eight-game losing skid when they erupted for four power-play goals in the second period against the Nashville Predators to book a 5-4 victory.

It was the offensive outburst that the team desperately needed, especially after the club fell behind 3-0 midway through the first period. Kris Versteeg buried two of those goals and Clarke MacArthur added three assists in the second period to jumpstart a power play that had managed just three goals over the club’s losing streak.

“That was a long three weeks,” MacArthur told reporters following the game. “We’re really excited. We want to put a streak together now.”

They’ll have a good opportunity to do just that against the Devils. Toronto goaltender J.S. Giguere left the game late with a suspected groin injury and Jonas Gustavsson came on in relief. Giguere didn’t participate in Wednesday’s practice and Gustavsson is expected to start against New Jersey, giving Leafs supporters the change they’ve been looking for. He’ll be ready to go.

                    Pick: Leafs
