Bettors' best friend: Wednesday's wagering tips

    Lines to watch

Akron opened as a 13.5-point underdog at home to Miami (Ohio) but now sits at +10.

    Weather to watch

Miami (Ohio) at Akron – Winds at 21 mph are expected with a 40 percent chance of precipitation.

Bowling Green at Toledo – Winds at 15 mph are expected with a 40 percent chance of precipitation.

    Who’s hot

Boston Celtics have covered in four straight.

Minnesota Timberwolves have covered in five consecutive games.

The New Orleans Hornets still haven’t lost against the spread this year, taking a push in their first loss of the season against Dallas to sit at 8-0-1 ATS.

    Who’s not

Miami Heat have dropped five straight against the spread.

Sacramento Kings have lost six straight against the number.

Buffalo Sabres have won four of five and 17 of their last 25 meetings with the Washington Capitals.

New York Islanders have lost 10 straight games.

Edmonton Oilers have lost the first five games of their current road trip.

    Key stat

7.8 - the average yards per carry the Toledo Rockets gave up last week in a 65-30 loss to Northern Illinois, which rumbled for 422 yards on 54 carries. Luckily for Rockets bettors, Toledo faces a Bowling Green team that is only averaging 60 rushing yards per game on Wednesday.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Andre Iguodala (Achilles), Philadelphia 76ers – Iguodala played Sunday night, but couldn’t make it through Monday’s practice, leaving to receive treatment on his right Achilles. Iguodala didn’t play Tuesday night at Cleveland and is questionable for Wednesday’s game against Toronto. Philly’s small forward is averaging 12.0 points, 5.6 rebounds and five assists.

    Game of the day

Dallas Mavericks at New Orleans Hornets

    Notable quotable

“Hallelujah, boys, is that great or what? … How cool is that? Now, they could still turn it around and win out for all that matters, but you’re starting to see some of the problems. Any team with a strong, big guy that can score, they’re getting abused by. They just don’t have size to battle. They have the fewest points in the paint of any team and that’s tough.” – Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban on ESPN Radio talking about the Miami Heat’s struggles.

    Notes and tips

Toledo heads into Wednesday’s game against Bowling Green with some serious problems at the center position. Both Ben Bojicic and Scott Lewis are banged up and coach Dave Clawson says he’s just hoping the pair are able to split time to get through Wednesday’s game. Toledo is down to just five offensive linemen right now and the Blades are set as 10-point favorites.

The Los Angeles Lakers are dangerously thin up front now that center Theo Ratliff is out for at least a month after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery on Tuesday. Andrew Bynum still isn’t ready to go and Lamar Odom is hurting too, so Pau Gasol will have to log a lot of minutes for the next while. The Lakers play their second game in as many nights on Wednesday when they visit Detroit after a date with the Bucks on Tuesday.

The New York Islanders play their first game under Jack Capuano on Wednesday after Scott Gordon was canned. The Islanders head into the matchup with the Tampa Bay Lightning having lost 10 straight games. Capuano is preaching that his club has to “put the past behind” them and considering their record, that’s understandable.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dallas Mavericks at New Orleans Hornets (-4.5, 192.5)

Every good thing must come to an end. The Hornets had their undefeated streaked snapped by the Dallas Mavericks Monday night, but won’t have to wait long to avenge that 98-95 defeat.

Dallas is in New Orleans Wednesday in the second half of this home-and-home series. The Hornets have lost 14 of their last 15 road games to the Mavericks but have been better in the Big Easy, taking the last five home contests versus Dallas while going 4-1 against the spread.

A big problem Monday was the disappearance of star point guard Chris Paul. He scored 22 points in the game but failed to find the basket in crunch time, going scoreless in the final 20 minutes of the second half. Paul was also limited after picking up four personal fouls.

"You can't do nothing on the bench," Paul told the media. "That's my fault. I felt like the fouls were here or there, that's my fault. I can't expect the ref not to call it."

Bettors can expect a smarter effort from New Orleans Wednesday. The Hornets are still a perfect 5-0 ATS at home and have a 6-3-1 ATS mark in their last 10 head-to-head meetings with Dallas. On top of those promising numbers, the home team is 5-1-2 ATS in the last eight games between these Western rivals.

        Pick: New Orleans

Phoenix Suns at Miami Heat (-8.5, 208)

Phoenix has relied on its outside play to top opponents this season but, with the Miami Heat up next, the Suns will be without their biggest edge for Wednesday’s battle in South Beach.

Phoenix lost starting center Robin Lopez for the next few weeks after the Stanford product sprained two ligaments in his left knee against the Los Angeles Lakers Sunday night. Lopez, who was scoring over five points and grabbing four rebounds per game, would have been key against a weak Miami interior that has struggled against opposing centers.

"We could play small, but the wiser course would be to try to reinforce what we can do with the (big men) and get another player in here who can help us," Suns President of Basketball Operations Lon Babby told the Arizona Republic. "We were considering doing this anyway."

Channing Frye started in place of Lopez against the Denver Nuggets Monday night. While Frye is a great perimeter threat that can stretch the defense, he’s not the physical presence in the paint Phoenix needs to exploit the Heat’s frontcourt.

The Suns were out-rebounded 52-43 and gave up 56 points in the paint to Denver, but managed to hang on for a 100-94 win as 2-point home favorites.

        Pick: Miami

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Northwestern St. Demons at Memphis Tigers (N/A)

It may not have been pretty, but the Memphis Tigers survived a scare from the Miami Hurricanes the last time they took the floor.

Memphis was down by a bucket with less than two minutes to play, but freshman guard Chris Crawford hit a big trey down the stretch and the Tigers pulled out a 72-68 win. It wasn’t enough to get Tigers bettors a payday though with the club set as a 6.5-point favorite.

"The reason we were able to win was because of our defense," Memphis coach Josh Pastner told reporters. "We held them to low percentages and we made our free throws. Big 3 by Chris Crawford. He had missed a bunch, but I told him, 'Hey, keep shooting.' The guy is one of our best shooters and he made a big shot to give us a 1-point lead."

Still, Pastner can’t be happy with his club shooting only 33.9 percent from the floor and a terrible 18.2 percent from downtown. Sometimes a tough win like this is just what a team needs early in the season, but look for the Tigers to start slow after playing two games in 48 hours.

Northwestern St. was a handful for LSU and had a second-half lead before eventually losing 87-78.

            Pick: Demons

Alcorn St. Braves at Purdue Boilermakers (N/A)

When senior forward Robbie Hummel went down with a season-ending knee injury earlier this month, the Boilermakers knew they’d need some guys to step up. Hummel was the club’s second-leading scorer and rebounder last season.

So far, seniors JaJuan Johnson and E'Twaun Moore seem up to the task. Moore booked 16 points and Johnson added 10 points, 12 boards and five blocks in Purdue’s 76-40 blowout of Howard on Sunday.

Without Hummel, the club has recommitted to defense and held Howard to just 24.6 percent shooting from the floor.

"I think us playing good team defense will help us win a lot of ball games," Moore told reporters. "We have a lot of players who played last year, so they kind of know what's going on the defensive end. We just have to keep putting it all together."

Wednesday’s game with Alcorn State marks the first ever meeting between the two clubs. The Demons were 2-29 last season and have lost their last nine games against ranked opponents.

This seems like a good opportunity for Purdue to get everything together.

            Pick: Boilermakers

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
                --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Phoenix Coyotes at Calgary Flames (-145, 5.5)

Jarome Iginla has long been the face of the Calgary Flames. The hard-working forward sets the tone for the franchise with his hustle and great two-way play.

However, that hasn’t translated into points for Iginla this season, leaving him with just 10 total points and a ton of criticism heading into Wednesday’s home tilt with the Coyotes.

"It's no secret my game hasn't been very good to start this year," Iginla told reporters.

Iginla leads the team with 49 shots but has scored only three goals this year, one coming in his most recent outing – a 4-3 loss to the San Jose Sharks. He is currently minus-6 on the season and has found himself on the bench in the closing minutes of tight games.

"You know what?" he said. "Last game, I went in trying to focus on some of the simpler things. Last game felt a lot more normal. I'll say it. So I'm going to build on that."

The Flames have won just once in their last seven games, including a 5-4 loss to Phoenix last Friday. Calgary is 1-3 in the past four head-to-head meetings with the Coyotes and Iginla has only one assist and a plus/minus rating of -3 during that span.

                Pick: Phoenix

Vancouver Canucks at Pittsburgh Penguins (-135, 5.5)

The Vancouver Canucks knew they would have to fill the net if they wanted to come out on top of their current five-game road swing.

That anxious offense has produced, scoring 14 total goals in the past three games heading into the final game of the trip in Pittsburgh Wednesday night. It’s also pushed the final score over the total in those three contests, improving the Canucks to 6-4 over/under on the road.

Vancouver battled back from a 2-0 deficit against the Buffalo Sabres to force overtime, but lost 4-3 in the extra period Monday night – playing over the 5.5-goal total. The last time the Canucks and Penguins met, they topped the 5.5-goal number with a 6-2 Vancouver win on January 16.

                Pick: Over

                    Daily Sports Roundup: November 17

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Sharks and Avalanche meet on the ice in Colorado, Bowling Green battles Toledo, and the Suns look for a victory over in Miami.

                    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

Wednesday offers up a pair of college football games, with Miami-Ohio (-10.5) at winless Akron, and Bowling Green at Toledo (-10). The Falcons (2-8 SU, 6-4 ATS) were beaten 24-21 at home by Miami-Ohio last time out, with Matt Schilz throwing for 176 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions for Bowling Green in that game. The Rockets (6-4 SU, 5-5 ATS) are coming off an ugly 65-30 road loss to Northern Illinois in which Terrance Owens passed for 186 yards with two touchdowns and one INT, and Adonis Thomas ran for 152 yards and two scores. The total for that game is listed at 54.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA has 10 games on tap on Wednesday, with Toronto at Philadelphia, Washington at Boston, the Lakers at Detroit, the Clippers at Minnesota, Dallas at New Orleans, Houston at Oklahoma City, New Jersey at Utah, Chicago at San Antonio, New York at Sacramento, and Phoenix at Miami. The Suns (6-4 SU, 5-5 ATS) are riding a three-game winning streak, beating Denver 100-94 at home in their last game on Monday night. Hakim Warrick led the way with 21 points off the bench for Phoenix in that win. The Heat (6-4 SU, 4-6 ATS) are coming off a 109-100 home win over Toronto on Saturday, with Dwyane Wade scoring 31 points and LeBron James adding 23 points.

As well, the college basketball schedule offers up more Preseason NIT contests on Wednesday, along with three standalone game involving ranked teams: Alcorn State at No. 14 Purdue, Northwestern State at No. 19 Memphis, and Utah State at No. 23 BYU. Utah State (1-0 SU, 0-1 ATS) beat Weber State 77-65 at home in their first game of the year, while BYU (1-0 SU, 0-0 ATS) is coming off an 83-56 home win over Fresno State.

                    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there a dozen games on the NHL's schedule for Wednesday, with Boston at the Rangers, Florida at Atlanta, Ottawa at Carolina, Buffalo at Washington, Tampa Bay at the Islanders, Vancouver at Pittsburgh, St. Louis at Detroit, Anaheim at Minnesota, Chicago at Edmonton, Phoenix at Calgary, Columbus at Los Angeles, and San Jose at Colorado. The 9-5-2 Sharks are coming off a 6-3 home win over the Kings on Monday night, with Patrick Marleau picking up a goal and two assists and Antero Niittymaki making 32 saves. The 9-7-1 Avalanche beat St. Louis 6-3 at home in their last game on Monday, but they fell 4-2 at home to the Sharks when the teams met October 21. Joe Pavelski scored twice for San Jose that game; Chris Stewart had two assists for the Avs.

                      Wednesday's six-pack

-- Braves acquired Dan Uggla from Florida, who will be free agent after next season. Not sure how the Marlins will replace his offense. Sad to see a team that is being gifted with a new stadium dumping salary.

-- Browns waived QB Brett Ratliff, who looked good in summer but hasn't gotten any action in regular season. Someone should pick the guy up (Miami?) and see if he can play. I think he can.

-- Magic-Knick game that was postponed because of stuff falling from the roof at Madison Square Garden will now be played March 28. It will be interesting to see if Carmelo Anthony is a Knick by then.

-- Charles Barkley/Kenny Smith will do studio analysis for the NCAA tournament, which will be broadcast on four different networks for the first time next March. Marv Albert will call some of the games.

-- Back to reality for Butler, which lost 88-73 in the opener of the new arena in Louisville. Bulldogs are still the best team in the Horizon, but no way are they still a player nationally.

-- I generally like Dick Vitale, but he has to stop whining about games taking too long to play. He's getting paid a small fortune, just sit there and talk until the game is over. Its not that difficult.

                      **************************************************

Wednesday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind.........

                      13) Picked a good day to have the flu, laid in a blanket and watched ball most of the last 24 hours. Most of the games were pretty good, which is harder than it sounds, creating good made-for-TV matchups. Just wish I felt well enough to stuff my face while watching the games.

                      12) So far in less than a week, Wake Forest lost to Stetson, Auburn lost in OT to NC-Asheville, Iowa lost to South Dakota State, Georgia Tech lost by 17 at Kennesaw State. November losses put coaches in the hot seat. You pay a team to come and play you, and then they win.

                      11) Kudos to Memphis-Miami, Butler-Louisville for playing good clubs in their season openers. Memphis-Miami was really fun game to watch. You have to play good opponents to help your strength of schedule. Its one huge reason why college hoop is better than college football, where you can't afford non-league losses. Just wish more teams did this.

                      10) St John's hasn't been in the NCAAs since 2002; with ten seniors on this year's squad, you'd think they have a shot this year, but unless they find a couple of dependable shooters, its going to be tough. Shooting was a main reason for their tough 76-71 loss at St Mary's late last night.

                      9) Watched LaSalle lose to Baylor; 20 years ago, Explorers were kings of the MAAC, but their eyes got bigger than their stomachs, and they went up to the Atlantic 14, where they've fallen off the face of the earth as a part of the A-14's second division. They're a small fish in a big pond.

Its a cautionary tale for some of the Siena fans, who want the Saints to move up to a better league; being a big fish in a small pond can be a lot more fun, since winning is more fun than losing. I'm just saying.......

                      8) Rice wouldn't hire Josh Pastner as its head coach, but Memphis did, which helps explain why Memphis wins and Rice doesn't. Hell, the kid is from Houston. Rice people should know he's a terrific coach.

                      7) Switching to the NFL, Denver-KC game Sunday was first time NFL history the two punters in a game (Colquitts) were brothers.

                      6) Vikings are just 8 for 32 on 3rd down in last three games, are minus-6 in turnovers over their last four games. Can't win that way.

                      5) 49 different QBs have started at least one NFL game this season.

                      4) Lions are 0-25 in last 25 road games, worst stretch over last 30 years. Second worst streak? Lions went 0-24 from 2001-3. Houston Oilers are third on the list, going 0-24 from 1981-84.

                      3) Randy Moss has played two games against Miami this year; his total production? One catch for 26 yards.

                      2) What Jason Garrett is going through now with Dallas is same thing Jim Haslett went through two years ago with the Rams; Haslett upset a couple superior teams right off the bat, then almost upset the Patriots, but then things went back to ugly and he never got another win. Making the coaching change was solely a quick fix aimed at silencing the media.

                      1) Sam Bradford has thrown 100+ passes since last throwing an INT; it wouldn't be the worst thing if he threw one now and then, since it would mean he's actually trying riskier things. Think St Louis coaches are doing their best to coddle him, which is fine, except he's one of the Rams' best players. He can handle more of the workload. Let the young guy play.

                              College Basketball Knowledge
St John's lost 76-71 at St Mary's late Monday, didn't get back to NYC until Tuesday night, now play Columbia team they beat 76-70 in the last series meeting, four years ago. Lions are 1-1, losing by 11 to LaSalle in the opener. Red Storm had only six assists on 22 hoops Monday; lot of individual play.

Home side won six of last seven Indiana State-Ball State games, as the Sycamores lost last three visits here, by 3-6-8 points. Only one of those seven games was decided by more than 8 points. Fourth game in 6 nites for Indiana State, which lost two of three at Loyola event. Ball State has four starters back from LY; they won their first game by 31.

Cornell has only one starter back from LY and he's hurt; Big Red split its first two games. Delaware lost its opener by 19 at Ohio; they've got all five starters back from LY's 7-24/3-15 team (is that a good thing?) Hens beat Penn by 3 LY, their only game vs Ivy League team last five years.

South Alabama won two of last three games vs Southern Miss; visitor won last two years, with USA winning 76-73 in OT in last visit here two years ago. USM opened season with good win at So Florida; they've got all five starters back from 20-14/8-8 team. Jaguars have four starters back from 17-15/8-10 club- they're deeper this year.

Marquette was down 41-33 at half to Bucknell at home Sunday, rallied to win by 11, but its a small red flag; Eagles have two starters back from 22-12/11-7 team- they've haven't played Green Bay in last eight years, so you know this is bigger game for Phoenix of Horizon League, which has new coach and lost three starters from LY's 22-13/11-7 team.

Drake won three of last four games vs Iowa State, upsetting Cyclones in last two visits to Ames by total of five points; Bulldogs have 3 starters back from LY's 14-19/7-11 team. State won its first two games, by 14-27 points; they've got three new starters and new coach after 15-17/4-12 team LY. Iowa State plays against its former coach in its next game.

Louisiana Tech won 99-94 at Houston LY; Tech lost three starters from LY's 24-11/9-7 team that was ravaged by injuries down stretch. This is a young team. Houston has new coach and three new starters; they'll play defense under Dickey and won't chuck/duck like they did with Penders as coach, but this year, Houston's talent level is a little down.

Middle Tennessee lost 65-64 at former Sun Belt rival UAB LY, first time two teams played in years; Blue Raiders have only one double digit scorer back this year, are rebuilding after 19-14/13-5 season. UAB lost three of its starters from disappointing 25-9/11-5 team that fell short of making to NCAAs. Blazers won their first game this year by 22.

Bradley had tough 66-63 win over Northern Illinois last night, now face an improved LMU team that hasn't played since Sunday- they've got four starters back from 18-16/7-7 team, but they lost opener to Morgan State at home. Braves have four starters (top three scorers) back from LY's 16-15/9-9 team that turned down bid to consolation tourney.

Utah State has four starters back from 27-8/14-2 that won WAC regular season title last three years, but they'll have new PG; home side won six of last seven series games with BYU- Aggies are 5-3 overall in last eight games vs Cougars. BYU has three starters back from 30-6/13-3 team, but their explosive backup PG transferred, which hurts their depth.

Home side won San Francisco-San Jose games last two years, with Dons losing 82-76 in last visit here. USF lost three starters from LY's 12-18/7-7 team; all six of its recruits are freshmen, so this is young USF squad. San Jose won its opener by 7; they've got good senior guards, are very young/thin up front- they've got 2 starters back from 14-17/6-10 team.

Wisc-Milwaukee was 1-2 out in Oregon over weekend, now has trip to western NY to face Niagara squad playing season opener. Panthers gave up 75.7 ppg out in Portland. Niagara lost four starters from LY's 18-15/ 9-9 team that beat UWM 85-79 in Bracket Buster game last winter- they have good point guard, but lot of young kids around him.

Penn has all five starters back from 6-22/5-9 team- they upset Davidson 69-64 in opener Saturday. Manhattan beat NJIT 75-70 in its opener; Jaspers lost five of their top six scorers from LY, albeit from 11-20/4-14 team. Penn gets senior G Bernardini back after missed all but one game LY with a foot injury.
