    Daily Sports Roundup: November 15

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: Kansas hosts Valparaiso, while the Hornets look to stay perfect on the season, and the Eagles travel to Washington to meet the Redskins.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

The Eagles (5-3 SU, 3-5 ATS) will be in Washington on Monday night to take on the Redskins (4-4 SU, 5-2-1 ATS). Philadelphia held on for a big 26-24 home win over Indianapolis in their last game, as Michael Vick threw for 218 yards and a touchdown while also running for a score. LeSean McCoy rushed for 95 yards for the Eagles in that contest. Washington was thumped 37-25 in Detroit in their last outing, as Donovan McNabb threw for 210 yards with one touchdown and one interception. McNabb is listed as questionable for the Monday nighter with a hamstring injury, and oddsmakers have the Eagles pegged as 3-point road favorites. The total for the matchup is at 42.5 points.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

There are seven games on tap in the NBA on Monday, with Memphis at Orlando, Minnesota at Charlotte, Denver at Phoenix, Oklahoma City at Utah, Detroit at Golden State, New Jersey at the Clippers, and New Orleans at Dallas. The Hornets (8-0 SU, 8-0 ATS) remained undefeated with a 107-87 home win over Portland on Saturday night, with Chris Paul providing 11 points and 13 assists. David West and Marco Belinelli each scored 18 points for New Orleans in that win. The Mavericks (6-2 SU, 3-4-1 ATS) are coming off a 99-90 home win over Philadelphia, with Jose Juan Barea pouring in a team-high 19 points off the bench. Dirk Nowitzki had 16 points for Dallas in that victory.

As well, there are three ranked teams in action around college basketball on Monday, with Tulane at No. 20 Georgetown, Miami at No. 19 Memphis, and Valparaiso at No. 7 Kansas. The Crusaders (1-0 SU, 0-0 ATS) beat Indiana-Northwest 111-64 in their first game of the season, with Brandon Wood leading the Valparaiso offense with 20 points. The Jayhawks (1-0 SU, 0-0 ATS) blasted Longwood 113-75 to open their season. Marcus Morris had 18 points for Kansas in that win, and Markieff Morris had 14 boards.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are six games on the National Hockey League schedule for Monday, with New Jersey at Boston, Vancouver at Buffalo, Ottawa at Philadelphia, the Rangers at Pittsburgh, St. Louis at Colorado, and Los Angeles at San Jose. The 12-3-0 Kings blasted the Islanders 5-1 at home in their last game on Saturday night. Anze Kopitar (two), Justin Williams, Dustin Brown, and Drew Doughty scored for Los Angeles in that win, while Jon Quick made 18 saves. The 8-5-2 Sharks slipped past the Flames 4-3 on Saturday, with Joe Thornton, Ryane Clowe, Joe Pavelski, and Logan Couture providing the markers for San Jose. Antti Niemi stopped 28 of 31 Calgary shots in Saturday's win.

Bettors' best friend: Monday's wagering tips

      Lines to watch

Eagles at Redskins – Over/under opened at 41.5, but has moved up to 42.5 or 43.

      Who’s hot

Memphis Grizzlies have covered in 12 of their last 16 meetings with the Orlando Magic.

New Orleans Hornets have covered in 11 of their last 12 games overall.

Detroit Pistons have covered in eight of their last 10 road games.

Philadelphia Flyers have won eight of their last nine games.

Vancouver Canucks have also won eight of nine.

      Who’s not

Philadelphia Eagles are 3-8 against the spread in their last 11 overall.

Minnesota Timberwolves have covered in just two of their last eight road games.

Denver Nuggets have covered in just one of their last eight trips to Phoenix.

New York Rangers have won just one of their last nine meetings with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

      Key stat

25 – number of rushing yards Mike Vick needs against Washington to move past Steve Young (4239 rushing yards) into second place on the all-time list. Vick ran for 74 yards and a touchdown last week against the Colts and has 261 rushing yards this season.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Clinton Portis (groin), Washington Redskins - Portis is still considered questionable for Monday’s game against Philadelphia, but it seems more likely that he’ll have to take another week off. The running back was limited in Saturday’s workouts. Meanwhile, Ryan Torain, who has filled in for Portis since the veteran went down, seems to be ready to go after he picked up a hamstring injury before the club’s bye week.

      Game of the day

Philadelphia Eagles at Washington Redskins (+3, 43.5)

      Notable quotable

“It’s been quite entertaining, I should say, from the talks to the reactions, to things of that nature. I’ve been getting some pretty good support from some of the ex-players and commentators, and I thank them for that. But for me at this point, it’s really just an opportunity for me to move on.” – Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb on the aftermath of his benching two weeks ago.

      Notes and tips

Dallas Mavericks forward Caron Butler is questionable for Monday’s game. Butler did take part in the team’s practice on Sunday, but in a limited capacity. Coach John Carlisle says that he isn’t sure if Butler will be ready to play against the Hornets and that the club would see how Butler looked during Monday’s shootaround.

Boston Bruins head coach is shaking up his lines to see if some shuffling will get Boston’s offense going. Michael Ryder will likely be demoted to the fourth line against the New Jersey Devils and Shawn Thornton is in line to take his spot playing with Tyler Seguin and Daniel Paille. Boston has just one win in its last five games and only managed a single goal in back-to-back losses to Montreal and Ottawa.

Minnesota Timberwolves forward Kevin Love is riding a crazy hot streak right now. He followed up a 31-point, 31-rebound performance against the New York Knicks by scoring 22 points and grabbing 17 rebounds against the Atlanta Hawks on Sunday. He’s now averaging 20 points and 19.4 rebounds per game over his last five outings.

        Monday's six-pack

-- Minnesota Twins' players want fences moved in at Target Field, at least the hitters do, but the team says they'll stay where they are.

-- Pittsburgh Pirates hired Clint Hurdle as manager; wonder what the difference in money is, since I'm guessing being hitting coach of the Rangers is more fun than managing the Pirates will be.

-- Its cool walking into a **** and the first song you hear on the PA is Silver Bells.....even if it was November 13. Little early, but still cool.

-- The US Postal Service lost $12.3B the last two years. Yikes.

-- Did you know that the Pentagon budget eats up around 80% of the individual income tax revenue in this country?

-- Anheuser-Busch is suing Major League Baseball, a major red flag, since the brewery spends tens of millions of dollars advertising with 26 of the 30 major league clubs.

        ************************************************** ****************

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday......

        13) Rough day for QBs in Miami, as three of the six QBs got knocked out of the game; we wound up with Tyler Thigpen under center for the Fish-- four different Miami players threw a pass (WR Marshall threw one). As for Tennessee, I learned that Rusty Smith is their 3rd QB, but he was the only QB who didn't get into the game.

Dolphins play Chicago on Thursday night this week; they're up a creek with QBs, and will bring in Patrick Ramsey/Chris Simms to try out this week. If you bring Chris Simms in for a tryout, you're hurtin'

        12) Six of 12 winners this week had a 10+-yard edge in field position; it is underrated how important just getting first downs is, to improve the field position and at least lengthen the field the other team has to travel to score. This is where 3rd down conversions can be big, to give your D a rest on the bench while also moving the ball for your team.

        11) Colts were a whopping +5 in turnovers Sunday; since 2005, teams with a +5 or better turnover ratio are 42-1, but Cincinnati had the ball with a chance to take the lead in the last 2:30 Sunday. Red flag for Indy.

        10) I'm totally convinced that the three best QB/leaders I've ever seen are John Elway-Roger Staubach and Tom Brady.

        9) Is it possible that the Carolina Panthers' best QB is a WR playing on special teams? Armanti Edwards played QB at Appalachian State, back when they upset Michigan in Ann Arbor.

        8) Last year, the Lions lost to 0-7 St Louis. Sunday, the Lions lost to the 0-8 Bills. Not exactly the kind of progress they're looking for.

        7) Cowboys averaged 14.1 yards per pass attempt in Swamp Stadium, and that was with some of the lights out for much of the game in the new stadium. I guess $1.6B doesn't buy as much as it used to; either that, or they just don't have enough money left over to pay the electric bill. .

        6) Minnesota converted 1-9 on 3rd down, Chicago 11-19, which is a big part of why the Bears dominated field position (14-yard edge in starting field position) and handed the Vikings yet another road loss.

        5) Speaking of the Vikings, Joe Kapp has a son on Cal's football team-- kid wears number 22. Kapp played on Cal's 1959 Rose Bowl team, so he has to be pushing 70 years old. And he has a kid in college. Cool.

        4) Memo to Baltimore Ravens; Troy Smith is better than Marc Bulger, and it ain't close, brother. Bulger beat Smith out for the backup QB job with the Ravens this summer. How, I'm not sure.

        3) New Jersey Jets are the first-ever NFL team to win OT games on the road in consecutive weeks.

        2) By my count, over is 10-2-1 this week, going into the Monday night game in Washington; that makes over 85-57-1 so far this year. The NFL has created this by making the rules incredibly offense-friendly.

        1) If you bet on Houston and/or Cleveland Sunday, my condolences, as they were two of the worst beats I've seen in a while.

NUGGETS: Denver is coming off their best performance of the year, as they gave the Lakers their 1st loss of the season. Denver beat Los Angeles 118-112 thanks to a strong final quarter, something the players hope is a sign of things to come. The Nuggets are 5-4 SU and 4-4-1 ATS overall this year. The Nuggets are 2-3 SU and 2-2-1 ATS on the road this year. Denver is 3-1-1 ATS as the listed underdog this year. Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New Orleans Hornets at Dallas Mavericks (-8.5, 200)

The New Orleans Hornets are earning their supporters a fortune early in the season. The Hornets are a perfect 8-0 straight up and against the spread as they head into Monday’s game with the Mavericks.

They aren’t doing it with smoke and mirrors either, instead leaning heavily on a suffocating defense that is allowing fewer than 90 points a night.
New Orleans is coming off a 107-87 blowout of the Portland Trailblazers as 4-point favorites.

"It's good to get a win and play our style of basketball," New Orleans forward Trevor Ariza told reporters after the win. "It's defense every night. It's been the key for us. We're all supposed to be one unit and that's what we try to display out there on the defensive end."

That’s exactly what under bettors like to hear. Saturday’s game played over the 188-point total, but it was just the second time New Orleans has topped a total this season. The Hornets have held all eight of their opponents to fewer than 100 points.

                Pick: Under

Memphis Grizzlies at Orlando Magic (N/A)

Casual Orlando Magic fans probably can manage to be patient about the club’s 6-3 start out of the gate, but the club’s wagering supporters are singing a completely different tune.

The Magic have dropped six straight against the spread and have banked only a pair of paydays through their first eight games. Orlando lost outright to the Utah Jazz and the Toronto Raptors last week despite being favored by 10.5 points against Utah and 14.5 points against the Raptors.

"We're glad it's early in the season," Dwight Howard told reporters. "We're gonna make mistakes and we're gonna lose games here and there. But I think they just outplayed us and they played harder than us. It has nothing to do with defense or offense. They just outworked us."

The Magic rebounded to squeak by the New Jersey Nets 91-90 the last time they took the court, but dropped the cash as 7.5-point favorites. It comes down to the basics for Orlando. Over the last five games, the club is allowing more than 96 points a night while shooting only 63 percent from the free-throw line.

                Pick: Grizzlies

                        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Kings at San Jose Sharks (-135, 5.5)

We knew good things were in store for the Kings after their surprising playoff appearance a year ago, but did anyone think they’d be this good this fast? Los Angeles improved to 8-0 on home ice following Saturday’s win over the Islanders.

"I'm just proud of the way we're performing right now," Kings forward Anze Kopitar told the Los Angeles Daily News. "Yeah, we can talk about numbers, but it's the team that's making it happen pretty consistently on a nightly basis. That's the thing we were all looking forward to coming into this season this is just the start that we wanted."

The part we’re most impressed about the Kings is their defense. They’ve killed 22 straight penalties and they’ve allowed just four goals in their last five games.

That’s bad news for a San Jose side that’s really been struggling to score at even strength.

                        Pick: Under

Ottawa Senators at Philadelphia Flyers (-175, 5.5)

It didn’t take long for the Sens to rebound from that beatdown Vancouver handed them on Thursday. Ottawa bounced back with a shutout win at Boston, improving the club’s record to 7-2 over its last nine games.

Ottawa dedicated the win to assistant coach Luke Richardson, whose daughter committed suicide earlier in the week.

“I don’t think anyone can imagine what it feels like unless you’ve experienced it, but you can imagine and it’s probably even worse than what you can imagine,” Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson told the Ottawa Citizen.

Expect an emotional letdown in this spot for Ottawa. The Flyers are one of the hottest teams in the league and have won six straight at home.

                        Pick: Flyers

Every week we update you on who's hot, who's not and situational betting spots in the National Hockey League.

                        HOT TEAM: Buffalo Sabres

The words flowing out of the Buffalo Sabres locker room Saturday night were about as expected:

                        "We were overdue."

                        "It's about time."

"We felt like we owed our fans."

All true, of course. The Sabres were speaking about their season-long home woes fresh off a 3-2 overtime win over the Washington Capitals. It was their first home win of the season -- yep, only the first -- and they were the league's last team, going into the night, to not have a victory on home ice. Hard to believe.

But now that the skid is over -- and all of its subsequent talk -- perhaps now we can move onto more important things. Like the Sabres, who were flat-out awful to start the year, have turned a corner over the past seven days. And bettors should take notice.

Granted, most of it was on the road, but the Sabres won three of the last four games heading into Monday night's clash with the Canucks in Buffalo. And in the past four games before the Vancouver meeting, they had registered at least one point. Not bad. Thomas Vanek is starting to score again, potting two Saturday vs. Washington, and goaltender Ryan Miller has returned to full health.

We bring all this up, because while there is still a talent differential between the Sabres and many of the league's elite teams, you may be able to get some real good prices this week on a team that is fighting and scrapping to get back in the Northeast Division race.

Again, though, the competition is fierce. This week alone, they play the aforementioned Canucks, Capitals, Kings and Lightning. That's a tough slate. But, understand that the Sabres are now playing their best hockey of the season, and that alone, might be enough to make them a "go on" team this week.

                        COLD TEAM: Dallas Stars

The long, winding, Western Conference road simply wore down the Stars last week. An up-and-down team to begin with, Dallas took it on the chin on a three-game swing, losing to Avalanche, Kings and Ducks. The scores were ugly, too. They were outscored 12-4 in that span.

If you're looking for a silver lining, however, the Stars return home for three games this week, where they are 5-3. They welcome Anaheim, San Jose and Colorado. It would be wise for Dallas to make some hay on this homestand, despite the degree of difficulty, considering their opponents.

After all, the Stars are in the ultra-competitive Pacific Division, and this little funk has them in last place. Until they prove they can score three goals a game on a consistent basis, consider Dallas -- even with Brad Richards on the rebound this season -- a "go against" for awhile.

                        OVER PLAY: Phoenix Coyotes

OK, so next to nobody is in the stands to watch them at home. And even when they're on the road, no one -- in a national sense -- is tuning in to watch them. But the Coyotes have been lighting the lamp these days, and their defensive deficiencies have been returning the favor, as well. For totals players, that's all that really matters, right?

It all adds up to a solid "over play" for the foreseeable future, as the Coyotes have been involved in games of seven or more goals, for and against, in five of their last seven contests. In a league short on offense, that's a pretty consistent clip.

In their last two games alone, there have been 17 goals scored. Wow. Over, anyone?

Continue to monitor this Coyotes run. They play at Calgary on Wednesday.

                        UNDER PLAY: Boston Bruins

The Bruins, perhaps eager to erase the memories of blowing a 3-0 series lead to Philadelphia in last year's second round, opened up with some fire to start the year, but have surprisingly cooled off in a hurry.

Leading into Monday's game against the Devils, Boston had dropped four of five. And more importantly for totals players, the Bruins had scored one goal or less in their four games leading into the New Jersey tilt.

Listen, there's too much talent up front on this team -- Nathan Horton, Milan Lucic, David Krejci -- to believe this funk will last forever. But let's face it, they are squeezing the sticks a little tightly right now, and with goaltender Tim Thomas playing the way he's playing -- he took a 1.45 goals against average into Monday's action -- it's tough not to consider this team a quality "under play" for a good bit here.

                        Surveying the schedule:

-The Edmonton Oilers on Sunday finished a grueling five-game road trip, but there isn't much time for this young club to recharge itself. On Wednesday, they have to play host to the Stanley Cup champions, and two days after the Blackhawks leave town, the Coyotes come knocking. Again, this is an inexperienced team in Edmonton that is not prepared for the long grind. And that Phoenix contest will conclude an eight-game stretch in which Edmonton did not have more than two days off in between any of those tilts.

-No one's been able to slow the Flyers these days, but maybe the schedule will get to them this week. They have four games this week and a total of five in eight days. Keep in mind, the defending Eastern Conference champions have played more than three games in a week just once this season, and the year is almost two months old. You may be able to get some good prices going against this team this week, as the public always loves a winner.

-Speaking of four-game weeks, the Blues are about to enter their second straight such stretch. What's more, they will carry a three-game losing streak into the run. Keep an eye on this young St. Louis team, especially when the weekend hits. They have a dreaded back-to-back stretch, two games in 24 hours: vs. Ottawa Friday, and vs. New Jersey Saturday
