    Who’s hot

The Hornets are 10-1 ATS in their past 11 overall.

The over is 14-4 in the Avalanches past 18 road games.

The Blackhawks are 16-6 in their past 22 road games.

    Who’s not

The under is 12-4 in the Bulls past 16 games as a favorite.

The under is 10-3 in the Trail Blazers past 13 overall.

The Bruins are 2-6 in their past eight home games.

    Key stat

36 – Losses in the past 62 games for a team in the Big Ten coming off a bye week. Who says a rested team plays better? Penn State beat Minnesota coming off a bye, Michigan coming off a bye and now must face a rested Ohio State team that has had an extra week to prepare for the suddenly resurgent Nittany Lions. The Buckeyes are listed at minus-18 and the home team is 9-3 ATS in the past 12 meetings between the rivals. No rest for the weary.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

The receiver situation is getting a little murky for the Baltimore Ravens. Anquan Boldin is the team’s clear No. 1 threat, but the rest of the rotation is much more clouded. Donte’ Stallworth has returned from an injury but is far from the deep threat and kick-return specialist he was earlier in his career. Former first-down machine T.J. Houshmandzadeh has gotten a fierce case of the dropsies and now possession receiver Derrick Mason has again broken his surgically repaired right pinky. He injured the digit during a 26-21 loss to Atlanta on Thursday night. His status for the upcoming weeks is unknown and if he misses time, it could greatly impact the team’s ability to move the chains and score points.

    Game of the day

Georgia Bulldogs at Auburn Tigers (-7, 62.5)

    Notable quotable

"I don't know how many wins it's going to take, but we'll be there at the end. Any minute now, we're going to put it all together.” – Dolphins receiver Brandon Marshall on guaranteeing a playoff berth this year.

    Notes and tips

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra knows he has a tough situation on his hands with a team loaded with superstars. Well, after another loss to the defending Eastern Conference champion Boston Celtics, his own players began complaining about their playing time. But this time, it was the fact they were seeing too much of the court and not enough of the reserves. "For myself, 44 minutes is too much," LeBron James told reporters. "I think Coach Spo knows that. Forty minutes for D-Wade is too much. We have to have as much energy as we can to finish games out." Good luck trailing this team.

Chicago Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville is again sending messages to his team to cutting the ice time of his stars. Earlier it was Patrick Kane. Now, it’s stud defenseman Duncan Keith. After some sloppy play by the Norris Trophy winner in a 2-1 loss to the Coyotes, Quenneville benched his star for about the final four minutes of the second period. These antics could get old quick for the defending Stanley Cup champions, who appear much less hungry to defend their title than when they won it last year.

So who is starting at quarterback for the Tennessee Titans? Good luck trying to figure that one out. Coach Jeff Fisher says Vince Young will be a “game time” decision, and backup Kerry Collins took the majority of the first-team reps in practice this week. Young, who is nursing an ankle injury, will definitely be less than 100 percent. Receiver Kenny Britt also remains sidelined, but Randy Moss is likely to make his debut on Sunday for the Titans. The real question, however, is who will throw him the ball?

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Portland Trail Blazers at New Orleans Hornets

New Orleans can’t wait to trot out it’s fantastic new defense against its Western Conference foe. The Hornets might lack sting on offense, but are the top team in the league defensively, with no team giving up fewer than its 90.1 points per game.

But it doesn’t stop there. Opponents also are shooting a meager 42.5 percent from the floor and a horrid 29.8 percent beyond the arc against the teal and gold. The team has employed a new defensive system this season that emphasizes stopping penetration into the paint and protecting the rim at all costs from every position. Heavy rotation from the wings has sometimes left opponents open for three, but thus far no team has been able to capitalize on the open triples.

The result? The Hornets are undefeated, tout several solid wins, a great bench and the under has hit six times in the team’s seven games.

And don’t expect Portland to change a lot of these trends. The Trail Blazers shoot just 32.5 percent beyond the arc – the sixth-lowest mark in the league – and are coming off a tiring game in Oklahoma City on Friday night. Sounds like bad jump shots and tired legs.

        Pick: Under

Washington Wizards at Chicago Bulls (-11, 202)

The Wizards are pretty good at a certain magic trick: disappearing on the road.
Washington is 0-3 away from The District this year, losing all three games in enemy gyms by an average of 18 points. Even worse, the Wizards are surrendering about 18 points per night when the team has to take the bus to the arena. The team also is just 2-4 ATS on the young season and has won just once in its past three games.

Chicago, on the other hand, has been fantastic at home.

The Bulls are 4-1 on their own hardwood and averaging more than 107 points per game there. The team is shooting a phenomenal 48.8 percent from the floor this season – the third-best mark in the league – and also is draining a solid 34.9 percent of its triples.

"We're at our best when we're moving up and down the court," Chicago guard Keith Bogans said. "Once Derrick [Rose] gets the ball in transition off a steal, our chances of scoring are very high."

And don’t expect them to take their foot of the gas in this one.

        Pick: Bulls and over

What bettors need to know: Hockey Night in Canada
              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vancouver Canucks at Toronto Maple Leafs

The Leafs try to snap a seven-game winless streak on Saturday night but it won’t be easy hosting the surging Canucks. Vancouver is 7-1 over its last eight games and 3-1 in its last four road games.

Goals hard to come by for Leafs

Toronto is 1-10 in its last 11 games and most of that has to do with the team’s inability to light the lamp. The Buds are averaging fewer than 1.5 goals per game over the cold spell and their power play is just 4 for 43 over the same period.

Right now, the Leafs will take goals anyway they can get them.

“It could be a breakaway, it could be a pretty goal, it doesn’t matter,” coach Ron Wilson told the Toronto Sun. “But if it’s an ugly one, that would kind of reinforce what the coaches are saying. We’re overpassing, overhandling in situations around the front of the net. An ugly goal would really go a long way.”

Not surprising, the under has cashed in seven of the Leafs’ last eight games.

              Spreading the Wealth

While the Leafs struggle to find goal production, the Canucks are getting offensive firepower from all lines. Mario Bliznak, fresh off his recall from the minors, centered the Canucks’ fourth line against Ottawa this week and netted his first goal of the season in the 6-2 romp.

"I was just driving to the net and the puck went in the air and it was a lucky play," Bliznak told the Vancouver Province after the game. "It feels good to get the first one and hopefully I can continue.”

Vancouver has scored three or more goals in all but one of its last eight contests.

              Notes and Trends

This will be the fifth game for the Leafs since captain and star defenseman Dion Phaneuf went down with a leg injury. He isn’t expected back in the lineup for at least another month. Toronto is 0-4 and has allowed four goals in three of those games.

The over is 15-6 in the last 21 meetings between these two teams.

Vancouver is 6-0 in its last six games against the Maple Leafs.

Calgary Flames at San Jose Sharks

San Jose looks to avenge a 4-0 loss to the Flames a few weeks back. This time, it’ll be the Sharks who have the home-ice advantage and are working with some rest.

              Baby Steps

Flames coach Brent Sutter made a small adjustment to his lineup Tuesday night against the Avalanche and was immediately rewarded for the change. Sutter bumped winger Curtis Glencross to the second line in place of Niklas Hagman.

Glencross repaid his coach for the promotion by tallying two goals in the 4-2 win over Colorado.

“You know, as a player, what’s going on,” Glencross told the Calgary Herald after the game. “It’s something where they feel you’re doing your job right and they’re going to reward you. If you keep doing your job right, you’ll keep getting rewarded.”

Glencross will remain on the second line with Rene Bourque and Olli Jokinen for Friday’s game against the Coyotes.

              Shark-bitten

San Jose continues to struggle in an area it normally excels at – scoring. The same team that finished inside the top seven in league scoring last two seasons has only 37 markers in 14 games and just 21 of those have come at even strength.

The Sharks scored one goal in their 2-1 shootout win against the slumping Islanders and that came off a 5-on-3 power play.

“Five on three – we’ve got to score there, especially when it’s another one of those nights when we’re not scoring five on five,” Sharks defenseman Dan Boyle, who scored the lone SJ goal, told the San Jose Mercury News.

              Notes and Trends

The Flames scratched forward Brett Sutter, nephew of coach Brent Sutter and son of GM Darryl, who allegedly threw a punch late Thursday night in a Scottsdale, Arizona bar. No word on if charges will be pressed.

This will be Sharks center Joe Thornton’s second game back since his two-game suspension.

The under is 4-1 in the Sharks’ last five games and 5-2 in their last seven games against the Flames.

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ottawa Senators at Boston Bruins (-166, 5)

There should be a ticker-tape parade in Boston, because it appears that goalie Tim Thomas is finally coming back down to earth. Thomas is 8-0 with an absurd 1.39 goals-against average and a sparkling .959 save percentage, but he has finally shown some cracks in his three most recent starts. Against Pittsburgh,
Washington and Buffalo, he combined to give up nine goals even though he picked up a pair of victories.

Against Washington, he was benched after giving up three goals through two periods.

"I understand," Thomas said. "Coach came and talked to me after the second period and told me what his thoughts were. And I said I understand and I agree."

But then again, he likely will return to orbit against Ottawa. Over the past three seasons he is 8-2 against the Senators with a sub-2.20 goals-against average. Included in those wins is a 4-0 win over Ottawa in Canada last month. In the victory he stopped 29 shots as the Senators squandered three power plays.

"The effort in front of me was great," Thomas said. "Our 'D' is doing an incredible job blocking shots when needed, clearing rebounds when needed. They're making life easy for me right now."

              Pick: Bruins

New York Islanders at Los Angeles Kings (-251, 5.5)

The Kings are doing one of the hardest things in the game for a young team – buying into defense and back-checking.

Los Angeles is embracing the less glamorous side of the game as the team is tops in the NHL in goals against (1.9) and No. 1 in penalty kill (91.5). At home, the unit is even better, killing off all 26 enemy power plays and is the only team not to give up a tally down a man on home ice. The team’s ability to stifle opponents with the man advantage has allowed it to turn a mediocre attack into a potent one that can counter-attack at any time.

Substantial depth has helped this aggressive defensive approach, as no fewer than nine forwards saw at least 10 minutes of ice team in the team’s most recent game. On the blueline, six players registered at least 12 minutes off the bench.

"You can't back down in this league," defenseman Matt Greene. "We can't shy away if we want to get points and win in the playoffs."

They should get another two points against New York.

              Pick: Kings

Antawn Jamison had 14 points off the bench that game. The Pacers made some noise back in their Tuesday outing with a 54-point third quarter in a 144-113 home win over the Nuggets. Mike Dunleavy poured in 31 points for Indiana in that contest, while Darren Collison was good for 29 points in the Tuesday win.

As well, there are five ranked teams in action on the college basketball schedule for Saturday, with Marian at No. 17 Butler, McNeese State at No. 18 Washington, No. 25 San Diego State at Long Beach State, Southern Illinois at No. 13 Illinois, and North Florida at No. 5 Pittsburgh. The Panthers have already played twice this week, knocking off Rhode Island 83-75 on Monday night and Illinois-Chicago 97-54 on Wednesday night. Ashton Gibbs led the way with 24 points for Pittsburgh in that Wednesday victory.

                  Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are 11 games on the NHL's schedule for Saturday, with Ottawa at Boston, Vancouver at Toronto, Florida at Philadelphia, Carolina at Montreal, Colorado at Detroit, Washington at Buffalo, Pittsburgh at Atlanta, St. Louis at Phoenix, Calgary at San Jose, the Islanders at Los Angeles, and Chicago at Nashville. The Blackhawks fell to 8-9-1 on the season with a 2-1 home loss to Phoenix in their last game on Wednesday night. Bryan Bickell had the lone Chicago goal in that contest, while Marty Turco stopped 20 of 22 Phoenix shots. The Blackhawks and Predators met in Chicago on October 13, with Nashville grabbing a 3-2 road win. Joel Ward provided the winner for the Preds that day.

                    ************************************************** *******

Saturday's List of 13: Random thoughts on a busy night.......

                    13) My 84-year old dad was looking forward to watching the Raven-Falcon game Thursday night; felt bad telling him that it was an NFL Network game, and OUR CABLE SYSTEM IS TOO GREEDY TO HAVE AN AGREEMENT TO CARRY THIS CHANNEL. So thanks, NFL and Time-Warner for being such greedy bastards that my dad couldn’t watch the game Thursday night.

                    12) My dad did watch the 5-4 Miami Heat lose to the Celtics again. That ringing you hear is Pat Riley calling his secretary to have her clear his schedule for the first six months of 2011, since he’ll be busy coaching the Heat.

                    11) Right now, Boston is clearly better than the Heat, but Miami will develop chemistry as time goes on, and we’ll see where the teams stand in May. Anyone who thought the Heat was just going to breeze through the NBA and go 72-10 is delusional. Team sports require teamwork, and that doesn’t happen overnight.

                    10) Did you know there are 34 different facial muscles? Me either.

                    9) One of the reasons the Raiders are winning more this season is that they’ve recovered 26 of the 37 (70.3%) fumbles in their games. Laws of probability and luck suggest that number will go down as the season goes on, which will hurt the Raiders.

                    8) UConn went for it on 4th-and-1 from their own 29 with roughly 2:30 left Thursday night, while leading 30-28!!!! If they don’t make it, pitt is already in position to win with a field goal, but Huskies made it. Very gutty call by Randy Edsall.

                    7) Phil Jackson is unusual in that he doesn’t like to call timeouts to stop opponents’ runs, he prefers to see how his players react to adversity, and let them work their way out of it. Probably costs him a couple of games short-term, and probably has also won him a championship or two. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that he usually has the best player in the game on his side.

                    6) Spurs’ owner Peter Holt saw heavy duty as an infantryman in the Tet Offensive during the Vietnam War.

                    5) Six different teams have won the Grey Cup (CFL title) in last six years; there are only eight teams in the league, so that’s pretty good balance.

                    4) Thought A’s made a good deal, getting one year of David DeJesus, for basically nothing. They need offense, and DeJesus is much better than what Oakland had in CF last season.

                    3) Three best defenses in NFL at forcing opponents to go 3/out:
                    1) Bears 46-98 (.469) 2) Giants 42-92 (.442) 3) Chargers 37-94 (.394) three worst teams:
                    32) Falcons 16-80 (.200), 31) Texans 18-80 (.225) 30) Jaguars 19-80 (.238).

                    2) Have to get to the M Casino on my next visit to Las Vegas; they’ve got some different forms of wagering, such as in-game betting, which resembles trading in the financial world. Sounds interesting.

                    1) There is a Mexican restaurant in Salt Lake City called the Blue Iguana. Thought you’d like to know, in case you’re ever craving Mexican food while in Utah. Hey, you never know.
