    Daily Sports Roundup: November 11

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Heat get a rematch with the Celtics in Miami, Pittsburgh looks for a win in Connecticut, and the Ravens and Falcons battle in Atlanta.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

The National Football League has a marquee matchup on tap for Thursday night, with the Ravens (6-2 SU, 4-3-1 ATS) on the road to play the Falcons (6-2 SU, 4-4 ATS). Baltimore coasted past the Dolphins in their game over the weekend, holding Miami scoreless in the second half of the 26-10 home victory. Joe Flacco threw for 266 yards for Baltimore that day with two touchdowns, while Ray Rice ran for 83 yards on 22 carries. Atlanta got past division-rival Tampa Bay 27-21 at home in their most recent outing, as Matt Ryan passed for 235 yards and one score. Michael Turner rushed for 107 yards and two touchdowns against the Bucs. Oddsmakers have Atlanta pegged as a slim 1-point favorite for Thursday night's game, with the total for the contest set at 43.

As well, there are two college football games on the Thursday schedule, with East Carolina at UAB (-1.5), and Pittsburgh (-5.5) at Connecticut. The Panthers (5-3 SU, 4-1-2 ATS) are riding a three-game winning streak, beating Louisville 20-3 at home last time out. Dion Lewis and Ray Graham rushed for touchdowns for Pittsburgh in that contest. The Huskies (4-4 SU, 3-4 ATS) are coming off a 16-13 overtime home win over West Virginia in which Jordan Todman ran for 113 yards and a score. Dave Teggart booted three field goals for UConn that day. The total for the Panthers/Huskies game is at 46.5.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up a trio of games on Thursday, with Golden State at Chicago, the Lakers at Denver, and Boston at Miami. The Celtics fell to 6-2 overall (and 4-4 against-the-spread) with an 89-87 loss in Dallas in their last game on Monday night. Paul Pierce led the way with 24 points for Boston in that losing cause, while Kevin Garnett was good for 18 points and 15 rebounds. The Celtics, though, knocked off the hyped Heat 88-80 in Boston when those two teams met on the opening night of the season. Ray Allen poured in a team-high 20 points for Boston on that night, while Pierce had 19 points. LeBron James began his South Beach career with 31 points for the Heat in that defeat, with Dwyane Wade scoring 13 points in the game, and Chris Bosh adding eight points.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are 10 games on the National Hockey League's schedule for Thursday, with Montreal at Boston, Tampa Bay at Washington, Minnesota at Atlanta, Buffalo at the Rangers, Philadelphia at Carolina, Edmonton at Detroit, Vancouver at Ottawa, Nashville at St. Louis, the Islanders at San Jose, and Dallas at Los Angeles. The 8-5-0 Stars will be looking to bounce back from a 5-0 road loss to Colorado in their last game on Saturday night. Backup netminder Andrew Raycroft made 40 saves for Dallas in that defeat. The 10-3-0 Kings are 6-0-0 at home so far this season, beating Nashville 4-1 last time out. However, Los Angeles will have to make due without both defenseman Willie Mitchell (broken wrist) and forward Alexei Ponikarovsky (broken finger) indefinitely.

Bettors' best friend: Thursday's wagering tips

      Lines to watch

UConn opened as a 6.5-point underdog against Pitt, but is now listed at +5.5.

      Weather to watch

Pittsburgh at Connecticut - 13 mph winds blowing sideline-to-sideline expected.

      Who’s hot

Golden State Warriors are off to a 5-2 start against the spread.

Boston Celtics have covered in eight of their last 10 trips to Miami.

Minnesota Wild have won six of their last eight meetings with Atlanta.

      Who’s not

Eastern Carolina Pirates are 5-13 against the spread in their last 18 road games.

Tampa Bay Lightning are 5-17 in their last 22 meetings with Washington.

Edmonton Oilers have won only eight of their last 26 games in Detroit.

      Key stat

106-38 – The points for/points against breakdown for the Pitt Panthers during their first three games of Big East play. The 106 points for is most in the conference so far while the meager 38 points they have allowed is the fewest. Pitt is set as a 5.5-point favorite visiting UConn on Thursday.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Roddy White (knee) Atlanta Falcons - White has promised to play all week, but is still listed as questionable for Thursday's game against the Ravens. The NFC's leading receiving didn't practice on Monday or Tuesday and was limited in Wednesday's walkthrough. He should play, but he's likely not close to 100 percent.

      Game of the day

Baltimore Ravens at Atlanta Falcons (-1, 43.5)

      Notable quotable

"It goes back to the (proposed) 18-game schedule. You have to ask yourself a real question when you schedule games like this: Who does it help? Because it doesn't help the players. That turnaround is just too quick. You go from playing a physical game on Sunday and you have less than four days before you have to physically get back up again. It takes a week for guys to really heal." – Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis on playing Thursday games.

      Notes and tips

New York Rangers winger Marian Gaborik will reportedly make his return to the lineup Thursday against the Buffalo Sabres after missing 12 games with a separated shoulder. The Rangers’ official Twitter feed reported that Gaborik said he was ready to go after he participated fully in Wednesday’s practice.

Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers wouldn't shed any light on the whether Shaquille and/or Jermaine O’Neal would be able to play Thursday night against the Miami Heat. Rivers originally said neither would play, but then backed off that statement and said both could play. We should have a better idea of who's in and who's out Thursday morning. The Celtics are set as 6.5-point underdogs.

Ottawa Senators goaltender Brian Elliott missed Wednesday's practice with an undisclosed injury. The team wouldn't comment on the situation following the workout, but this might turn into Pascal Leclaire's chance to finally get back in the net on Thursday against Vancouver. With Eliott playing so well, Leclaire hasn't started since coming back from a groin injury.

        Thursday's six-pack

NFL trends with Week 10 approaching.......

-- Falcons are 12-6 in last 18 non-divisional home games.

-- Miami is 2-9 in last 11 non-divisional home games.

-- Buffalo is 3-12-1 vs spread in last 16 home games.

-- Vikings are 0-6-1 vs spread in last seven home games.

-- Browns covered nine of last 12 games as an underdog.

-- Arizona is 3-6 in last nine games as a home favorite.

        ********************************

Thursday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

        13) Did you know General Motors now sells more cars in China than America? They just finished their best quarter in 11 years (made $1.96B) and could have their first annual profit in six years. Go figure.

        12) Jason Garrett had the Cowboys in full pads for his first practice as head coach Wednesday; see how long that lasts, but it could have a positive short-term effect. Players won’t want to be in pads again next Wednesday.

        11) If I was a Miami fan, wouldn’t be too thrilled that 34-year old Chad Pennington is getting the starting nod against Tennessee this week. So much for developing your QB of the future. When you’re 0-3 at home, changes get made.

        10) SI.com posted its projection for the college basketball Field of 68, which is interesting, since a total of four regular season games have been played, but it beats college football, where they talk about who is going to win the Heisman Trophy before Labor Day. At least they didn’t have who the last four teams left on the bubble were.

        9) Patriots put their kicker on the IR and signed Shayne Graham, who could be NFL’s version of Bengie Molina if Giants-Patriots meet in the Super Bowl. He kicked in one game for the Giants last month.

        8) Why would the Big East even consider adding TCU for football only? The only thing about that says “east” about Texas Christian University is that it is located in east Texas.

        7) Mets’ new assistant GM (former Dodger GM) Paul DePodesta is still only 37; he once had a bit part as a policeman on the TV show Homicide. His first job in sports was in the front office of the Baltimore Stallions of the CFL. Yes, Baltimore had a CFL team before the Ravens came to town. Don’t ask.

        6) The more you read, the more it looks like Terry Collins will be the next manager of the Mets. He has some experience at the big league level and is known for player development. Collins used to be the manager of both the Astros and Angels, and also managed in Japan.

        5) Nice moment as T'wolves-Kings game in Sacramento last night; at the end of third quarter, a soldier is chosen from crowd to shoot a halfcourt shot for a car. He misses, but the Kings' owner tells him to go shoot one foul shot for the car. He makes it, gets the car, crowd goes wild.

        4) Some of the better European golfers (Westwood-McIlroy-Kaymer) are making their own schedules, and won’t be holding a PGA Tour card next year, which means they won’t have to play in 15 events in this country. All three of them qualified for the four majors, and they’ll be in the World Tour events, but other than that, they’re doing what they damn well please.

        3) Must be nice to have so much money that they don’t care about qualifiying for Fed Ex Cup playoffs, which are only open to members of the US Tour.

        2) Sides for the NHL All-Star Game might actually be chosen in a live fantasy draft on TV All-Star weekend. Its like being a kid on the playground again. Interesting to see who the last All-Star taken will be. As usual, the NHL has better ideas than the NBA.

        1) How cool would it be if the NBA chose sides for its All-Star Game? Let Lebron and Kobe be captains, they shoot fingers for first pick, and then start drafting guys, live on national TV? How awesome would that be?

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Celtics at Miami Heat (-6.5, 183.5)

After the Big Three came together in South Beach, lots of talking heads wondered whether the Heat could contest the best regular-season record in NBA history that the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls set with 72 wins. That speculation was probably premature but at any rate, Miami wasn’t supposed to lose many games this season.

Especially not games in which they were up by 21 points in the third quarter while pegged as 9-point favorites. But that’s exactly what happened to the Heat Tuesday night when they dropped a 116-114 decision in overtime to the Utah Jazz.

"It hurts. It hurts to take time. No one wants to go through the process,” Dwyane Wade told reporters. “But it's life. Everyone has to go through the process. No question, we understand that we're a very good defensive team. We understand that our offense is coming along. And sometimes you take those things for granted."

Don’t count on that happening two games in a row, especially against the Boston Celtics who took the first meeting between the two clubs 88-80. Look for Miami to make a statement here.

                Pick: Heat

Los Angeles Lakers at Denver Nuggets (+3, 211)

Much like the Heat, the Los Angeles Lakers are also looking to bounce back from a disappointing effort in their last game.

The only difference here is that the Lakers were able to pull out a 99-94 win over the terrible Minnesota Timberwolves as 16.5-point favorites to improve to 8-0 straight up on the year. Los Angeles was outrebounded 54-42 by Minnesota and shot 44.9 percent from the floor while turning the ball over 18 times.

"The way we played tonight was irresponsible and it was reckless and it was disrespectful," point guard Derek Fisher told reporters Tuesday. "I can't get any clearer than that. There was an air of complacency, of arrogance, of 'We don't have to play as hard as the other team to win' that I didn't like tonight."

The Lakers have dropped two of their last three against the spread and Tuesday’s effort isn’t good news for the Denver Nuggets, who have lost two straight and four of their last five games against the number.

Kobe Bryant downplayed Tuesday’s close call the next day at practice, but you have to expect a much better showing from Los Angeles against Denver. This is also the shortest line the Lakers have seen all season.

                Pick: Lakers

                      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
                      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Montreal Canadiens at Boston Bruins (-150, 5.5)

The Montreal Canadiens may have some wrinkles to iron out yet, but goaltender Carey Price is making up for a lot of the mistakes in front of him.

Price improved to 8-5-1 on the year with his second shutout of the season, an impressive 2-0 win over the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday night. Price made 34 saves and was at his best when the Canucks made a push in the third period, firing 19 shots his way in the final frame. Price now owns a 2.28 goals-against average and a .918 save percentage.

“Carey made huge saves the whole game and he deserves the most credit, but everyone battled and that’s the way we have to play,” Roman Hamrlik told reporters. “Lately, we haven’t played our best, but tonight everyone brought their ‘A’ game.”

They’ll need a similar effort against a Bruins team that will be playing the second half of a back-to-back. Boston ranks eighth in the league averaging three goals a game and has enjoyed a spectacular start from veteran goalie Tim Thomas.

Look for this one to be a tight-checking affair.

                      Pick: Under

Tampa Bay Lightning at Washington Capitals (-205, 6)

The NHL’s top two scorers face off Thursday night as Steven Stamkos’ Tampa Bay Lightning visits Alexander Ovechkin’s Washington Capitals.

Stamkos sniped two more goals in Tuesday’s 4-0 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs and now tops the league with 13 goals and 24 points.

“It’s pretty surreal,” Stamkos told reporters of his hot start. “It’s my third year already and it just seems that time flies. When you look up and see the likes of Ovechkin and Crosby and then yourself, it’s pretty cool. At the same time, I’m doing everything I can to help this team win.”

Not to be outdone, Alexander Ovechkin chipped in a pair of assists to help the Capitals to a 5-3 win over the Rangers on Tuesday to extend his points streak to seven games. Ovie has four goals and 12 points over that span to sit just behind Stamkos with 20 points heading into Wednesday’s action.

At this price you either have to take a shot with the underdog Lightning or play over the 6-goal total. We’ll roll the dice with Tampa Bay to end Washington’s five-game winning streak.

                      Pick: Lightning
