Miami favored by 10 over Utah

        UTAH JAZZ (3-3)

        at MIAMI HEAT (5-2)

        Tip-off: Tuesday, 7:30 p.m. EDT
        Line: Miami -10, Total: 192

Utah leaves the mountains of the West behind as it heads to Miami to open its four-game Southeast road trip. The Jazz rallied to a 109-107 double-overtime win at home against the Clippers last Saturday, after a sorry 85-78 loss to the Warriors the night before. Utah played well against the East last year going 22-8 (73.3%) SU and 20-9-1 (69.0%) ATS. However, as the away underdog, the Jazz only took 8-of-27 (29.6%) SU. With the loss of Carlos Boozer in the offseason, Utah has looked to Al Jefferson to create a big presence in the paint. Jefferson is playing big minutes (39.3 per game) and averaging 9.5 rebounds per game and 18.3 PPG. Paul Millsap has also beefed up his numbers with more playing time this year. Millsap is averaging 20.3 PPG, shooting an impressive 60.7 FG Pct., and grabbing 11.2 rebounds per game. This duo will try to control the boards against a Miami team ranked second-to-last in the NBA in offensive rebounds (8.1 per game).

Miami and its all-star trio look to win its second of six straight home games after beating the Nets 101-89 this past Saturday. LeBron James, Chris Bosh, and Dwayne Wade were the only players to score double digits (20+ points each) and shot for a combined 25-of-45 (55.6%) from the field. This was only a minimal improvement from the unexpected loss in New Orleans last Friday where the trio shot 20-for-45 (44.4%) from the floor. Miami has played well against the Jazz, winning 11 of the last 13 meetings overall. The Heat are defending well for the season, holding teams to an NBA-low 86.4 PPG on 40.4 FG Pct., also tops in the NBA. Miami also has the league’s second-largest point differential at 13.2 PPG.

These FoxSheets stats expect Utah to cover the spread:

Play On - Any team (UTAH) - an explosive offensive team (>=102 PPG) against a good offensive team (98-102 PPG), after trailing in their previous game by 15 or more points at the half. (43-17 since 1996.) (71.7%, +24.3 units. Rating = 2*).

UTAH is 21-9 ATS (75.0%, +11.1 Units) in non-conference games over the last 2 seasons. The average score was UTAH 104.5, OPPONENT 95.9 - (Rating = 1*).

With Miami averaging 108.7 PPG in its three home games, this contest looks good to go Over the total. These FoxSheets stats also favor the Over:

UTAH is 26-11 OVER (70.2%, +13.9 Units) versus good teams - outscoring their opponents by 3+ points/game over the last 2 seasons. The average score was UTAH 104.4, OPPONENT 105.2 - (Rating = 2*).

MIAMI is 15-5 (75.0%) OVER (+9.5 Units) after failing to cover the spread in 2 or more consecutive games over the last 2 seasons. The average score was MIAMI 100.0, OPPONENT 95.4 - (Rating = 1*).

Jazz and Heat top Tuesday NBA betting schedule

The Utah Jazz have a 2-4 NBA spread record in their first six games, with the ‘total’ splitting at 3-3. Jerry Sloan’s squad begins a four-game road trip with Tuesday’s battle against the Miami Heat, who are 0-2 ATS in their last two games.

Utah squeaked out a 109-107 win as an 11 ½-point home favorite in Saturday’s double-overtime triumph against the Los Angeles Clippers. The Jazz erased an early 18-point deficit, outscoring Los Angeles, 52-36, in the second half to tie the game, 91-91, at the end of regulation.

Jazz guard Deron Williams piled in a season-high 30 points en route to logging a team-high seven assists. The 2010 All-Star hit 12-of-26 field buckets, playing nearly 54 minutes.

Utah’s Paul Millsap grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds and finished with 25 points. The power forward sank 7-of-9 at the foul line and added two steals.

The battle’s combined 216 points needed its 10 minutes of overtime to leap above the ‘total’ of 201 ½. Los Angeles logged 22 turnovers, while the Jazz gave up the ball 10 times.

Utah is 1-2 ATS in its first three road games, with the ‘over’ also 1-2. Millsap and Co. have put up 95.3 PPG in that span, while allowing 98 PPG.

Miami’s latest pointspread defeat came in Saturday’s 101-89 win as a 17-point home favorite against the New Jersey Nets. The Heat led by as many as 21 points in the second half before being outscored, 21-14, in the fourth quarter.

Heat guard Dwyane Wade notched 29 points and 10 rebounds for his second straight double-double. The Illinois native connected on 10-of-17 shots from the field, while draining 7-of-10 at the foul line.

Miami’s LeBron James logged a team-high nine assists en route to finishing with 23 points. The six-time All-Star added three boards and two steals.

The lopsided affair’s 190 combined points jumped above the closing ‘total’ of 189, making the ‘over’ 3-0 in Miami’s last three games.

Miami’s losing ticket brought Erik Spoelstra’s squad to 2-1 ATS in their first three home dates, with the ‘over’ also going 2-1. The Heat have scorched foes for 108.7 PPG in that stretch, while allowing a stingy 85.3 PPG.

Miami is 10-1 ATS in its last 11 meetings against the Jazz, with the ‘over’ collecting at 7-4.

Utah won the most recent matchup between the foes, 118-89, as a seven-point home favorite this past January. Williams notched a double-double for the Jazz with 23 points and 10 assists, while Wade hit 6-of-12 from the field for Miami en route to finishing with 13 points.

Tuesday’s tip is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. (PT), with NBA TV providing the national television coverage.

Utah is playing the front end of a back-to-back spot and will meet the Orlando Magic as part of Wednesday’s league slate. The Heat will have one day off before Thursday’s home game against the Boston Celtics, a rematch of the NBA season opener that saw Miami fall 88-80 defeat as a one-point road favorite.

NHL Betting Preview: Rangers host Capitals

A couple of streaks will be on the line Tuesday night when the New York Rangers host the Washington Capitals at Madison Square Garden. The Caps bring a four-game winning streak into this matchup, while the Rangers have played five straight ‘under’ contests.

The Capitals extended their winning streak to four games with Sunday’s 3-2 overtime victory against the Flyers as 175 home favorites. The combined five goals ducked ‘under’ the six-goal closing total, snapping a string of three consecutive ‘over’ games for the Caps.

Nevertheless, the ‘under’ is still 9-4-1 in Washington’s first 14 overall outings.

The victory concluded a very successful 3-0 homestand for the Caps, which saw them defeat Toronto in overtime, 5-4, and get the better of Boston, 5-3.

Though Washington defeated the Flyers by just one goal, the club completely out-played the Flyers with a 39-25 advantage in shots on goal.

The Caps, 2-for-6 on the power play against the Flyers, are now 7-for-17 with the man advantage in their last four games after going 0-for-16 in their previous five outings.

Mike Green scored the winning goal for the Caps, who are now 5-0 in overtime and 6-1 in one-goal games this season. The victory also snapped Philadelphia’s six-game winning streak.

Washington rookie netminder Braden Holtby, who was making his first NHL start, stopped 23-of-25 Flyers shots to register the victory. But Michal Neuvirth, Washington’s regular goalie is expected to get the start Tuesday against the Rangers. Neuvirth is 8-3-0-0 with a 2.41 GAA, .914 save percentage and one shutout.

Caps forward Brooks Laich missed the third period with an upper-body injury and is listed as “questionable.” Defenseman Tom Poti is also “questionable” with a lower body injury.

Washington’s offense is averaging 3.3 goals per game, which ranks second in the league. The club’s defense is rated eighth, allowing an average of 2.4 GPG. The Caps have the league’s 10th best power play, connecting on 20 percent of their opportunities.

The Rangers bring a string of five straight ‘under’ games into Tuesday’s contest thanks to some fine goaltending and shaky offense.

New York is off Sunday’s 2-0 loss against the Blues as a 130 home favorite on the NHL betting board. The ‘total’ closed at five goals. However, the Rangers had registered two shutout victories in the four games prior to Sunday’s action.

The two shutouts were recorded by Henrik Lundqvist against the Devils (3-0) and Maple Leafs (2-0). Lundqvist, who did not start in Sunday’s loss against the Blues, is now 6-4-1-0 with a 2.55 GAA and .924 save percentage.

Backup Martin Biron stopped 20-of-22 St. Louis shots in a losing effort to drop his record to 1-2. Biron has a 2.37 GAA and .901 save percentage in his three starts.

The Rangers lost despite out-shooting the Blues, 27-22. However, New York’s string of four straight games with a power play goal came to an end when the club went 0-for-4 with the man advantage.

John Tortorella’s troops are scoring and allowing an identical 2.7 goals per game. The New York offense ranks 17th, while its defense is 15th. The Rangers are also 16th on the power play, scoring on 16.7 percent of their opportunities with the man advantage.

High-scoring New York forward Marian Gaborik, missed Sunday’s game as he continues to recover from a separated left shoulder. The 28-year-old, who scored 42 goals and dished out 44 assists for the Rangers last season, is not expected to play Tuesday.

The Caps were 3-1 against the Rangers last season, with the ‘over’ going 2-1-1. All four games saw the ‘total’ close at six goals. Washington won both games at Madison Square Garden, 4-2 and 6-5.

The Rangers conclude their three-game homestand Thursday against Buffalo, while the Caps return home for a contest with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Lakers heavy NBA odds favorites vs. T-Wolves

Haven't the Minnesota Timberwolves already had it difficult enough? They are 1-6 straight up and against the NBA spread on the season and haven't even stuck within double digits of any team since the second game of the season.

Still, their season gets even tougher Tuesday night when they head to Staples Center for an NBA betting showdown with the Los Angeles Lakers, who are one of two undefeated teams left standing in the league as of Monday.

To say that the T-Wolves stand virtually no chance in this game is an understatement. Offensively, there just aren't enough stars to shine nearly bright enough to take down G Kobe Bryant and the men from Tinseltown. Minnesota is shooting just 38.7 percent as a team this year, and there is only one player shooting better than 43 percent from the floor.

On the other side of the court, things really aren't much better as there isn't a team in the NBA that is allowing more points per game than the Timberwolves. Minnesota was being scored on at the rate of 114.4 PPG going into Tuesday night.

So far this year on the road, Minnesota's losses seem to be getting progressively worse. Losing to the Memphis Grizzlies 109-89 was bad. Getting beat by the Miami Heat 129-97 was disgusting. Dropping to the Orlando Magic 128-86 was seemingly as bad as things could get. But the most recent loss, a 120-94 beating at the hands of the Houston Rockets, was notable because Houston was the only winless team left in the NBA.

Amazingly, there are just three men on this team that are averaging more than 10 PPG. Forward Kevin Love is the only one that would probably classify himself as having a "good year" withi his 16.9 PPG and 11.7 RPG on the season. Michael Beasley is at 14.3 PPG and 5.3 RPG. Rookie forward Wesley Johnson is putting up 10.6 points on the average night as well.

On the other side of the court, the Lakers just seem unstoppable right now. Los Angeles is a perfect 7-0 and has covered five of its six NBA betting lines since getting pushed to the brink by the Rockets on opening night.

LA has scored at least 107 points in all seven games and is averaging a league high 114.0 PPG.

Bryant could be on his way to yet another MVP Award averaging 22.9 PPG this season. He is doing a little bit of everything, picking up 5.7 RPG, 4.6 APG and he even has six steals. Bryant also has a triple-double to his credit against the Sacramento Kings.

However, if he is going to win the honor he might have to wrestle it away from his teammate, Pau Gasol. The big Spaniard is coming off of a triple-double of his own, having dropped 20 points, 14 boards and 10 assists on the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday. Gasol leads the Lakers in assists with 5.0 per game, and he is second in rebounding at 10.9 per game.

If there is a small silver lining in this for Minnesota, it is that the Lakers have only been favored by double digits once this season, and they failed to beat a 13 ½-point spread against the Toronto Raptors. Even though the T-Wolves are just 6-20-1 ATS in their last 27 overall, the road team has gone 7-2 ATS in the last nine meetings in this series as well.

Minnesota did get swept in all three games last year against LA, but scored covers as 15-point 'dogs twice at Staples Center. We fully expect to see the NBA odds higher than that on Tuesday night, but be sure to check back at 5Dimes for the exact line on this and all of the other pro basketball betting duels for this week.
