Bettors' best friend: Tuesday's wagering tips

    Lines to watch
Northern Illinois opened as a 12-point favorite over Toledo but is now set around -10.5.

    Who’s hot
Toledo Rockets are 9-2-1 ATS in their last 13 meetings with the Northern Illinois Huskies.

New Orleans Hornets have covered in eight straight dating back to last season.

Vancouver Canucks have won six straight games and are 11-2-1 in their last 14 meetings with the Montreal Canadiens.

The Washington Capitals have scored 20 goals over a four-game win streak.

    Who’s not
Utah Jazz have covered in just one of their last 11 meetings with the Miami Heat.

Detroit Pistons are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 meetings with Portland.

Minnesota Timberwolves are off to a 1-6 start straight up and against the spread.

Toronto Maple Leafs have dropped five consecutive games.

    Key stat
Zero – number of teams that have scored more than one second-half touchdown against the Northern Illinois Huskies this season. The Huskies have outscored their last five opponents 98-14 in the second half.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked
Luke Ridnour (hamstring) Minnesota Timberwolves – Ridnour missed Monday’s practice with a hamstring injury and is now considered questionable for Tuesday’s game against the Lakers. If he can’t go, Sebastian Telfair would step in for Minnesota, which is set as a big 17-point underdog in the game.

    Game of the day
Toledo at Northern Illinois (-10.5, 50)

    Notable quotable
“The coaches keep us focused on the game plan and keep us going about our business. But I have a strong dislike for Toledo. They’re our rivals. The past has helped create my dislike for them, no doubt.” – Jake Coffman, Northern Illinois defensive end, told reporters.

    Notes and tips
Northern Illinois has 21 seniors playing in their last game at Huskie Stadium against Toledo on Tuesday and 15 of those seniors are Illinois natives. Of the 21 seniors, 13 are regular starters.

Utah Jazz point guard Deron Williams was only able to practice at half speed on Monday as he deals with a bruised hip and a sore back. Willams, who guided the Jazz to a double-overtime win over the Clippers on Saturday night with 30 points, seven assists and eight rebounds, is not expected to miss any game action even though he’s banged up. Utah is up against the Miami Heat Tuesday as a 10-point underdog.

Chris Mason will be back in goal Tuesday night for the Atlanta Thrashers against the Ottawa Senators. The team gave him two games off after he made 53 stops in a 4-3 win over the Florida Panthers. Mason has won his last three starts, but still has a lofty 3.45 goals-against average this year while his Thrashers allow 37.8 shots per game.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Detroit Pistons at Portland Trail Blazers (-10.5, 188.5)

Brandon Roy just didn’t look right in Portland’s 121-96 blowout loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday night and people are noticing.

Roy was only 1-for-6 from the floor and finished with eight points in 31 minutes of work.
"I've played against Brandon Roy a lot of times," Los Angeles’ Ron Artest, who matched up against Roy on Sunday night, told the Orange County Register. "He wasn't himself."

The rumor running around is that Roy is still hurting again. He had left knee surgery before the 2008-09 season and then came back from a meniscus tear in the same knee early to play in the first round of last year’s playoffs. Right now nobody in the Portland organization is talking about the speculation and Roy is expected to play Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Detroit has been playing tough lately. The Pistons have won two straight and covered in each of their last three, the latest of which was a 102-97 win over the Golden State Warriors on Sunday.

      Pick: Pistons

Utah Jazz at Miami Heat (-10, 192)

It’s only early, but Chris Bosh isn’t going to sit around at the offensive end of the court all year watching Dwyane Wade and LeBron James go off.

Bosh and James had a conversation on the plane after the Heat dropped a 96-93 decision at New Orleans on Friday night, talking about how Bosh fits into the offensive game plan. Bosh had 15 points and one rebound in that game while Hornets forward Emeka Okafor dominated him with 26 points and 13 rebounds.

"We have a system but at the same time when the game is happening so fast, sometimes I just get lost," Bosh told the Miami Herald. "I don't know whether to cut, whether to go, whether to get back and playing with those two talented guys . . . it happens real fast. So, I just let [James] know that.''

The talk seemed to do Bosh a world of good. He put up a season-high 21 points and added five rebounds in Saturday night’s 101-89 win over New Jersey.

      Pick: Over

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Atlanta Thrashers at Ottawa Senators (-160, 5.5)

Just as the Ottawa Senators’ offense is finding its way with 20 goals over its last five games, the club welcomes another sniper back to the lineup.

Winger Milan Michalek, who missed the last four games with tendonitis in his left knee following offseason surgery, has been practicing on a line with Mike Fisher and Daniel Alfredsson and is expected to play Tuesday night.

Michalek had 22 goals in 66 games last year and had four goals in 10 games before hitting the shelf. At 6-foot-2, 225 pounds, Michalek will be a welcome addition to a club that’s looking to establish its offense down low and along the boards.

Meanwhile, Alex Kovalev is heating up again. The 37-year-old has fit in well on a line with Jason Spezza and Peter Regin and scored twice while leading the team with six shots in a 3-2 win over Montreal. Kovalev now has five goals in his last six games and is three points away from cracking the 1000-point plateau.

        Pick: Senators

Vancouver Canucks at Montreal Canadiens (+105, 5.5)

The Montreal media is infamous for getting on the home team when things aren’t going well. Captain Brian Gionta and Scott Gomez know all about it.

Gomez is the highest-paid player on the Canadiens at $8-million per year, but has managed only one goal and three assists in 14 games so far this year.

Gionta just snapped an eight-game goal drought with only his second of the year after he put 28 on the board last season, while Montreal has dropped three of its last four with just six goals for over that span.

"We worked hard, but at the same time you have to do it in a smart context of the game," Gionta told reporters after losing to Ottawa. "You can't be running out of position. (With) guys diving down, we gave up too many odd-man rushes.

"The intention is there, you mean well, but at some point you've got to cut your losses, say the play is broken, and sit back and wait for your next chance."

Vancouver meanwhile, is coming off an impressive 6-4 win over the Detroit Red Wings.

        Pick: Canucks

        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pucking the Trends: Detroit Red Wings are still Stanley Cup contenders
        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We scan the league every week to try and figure ways to make money betting the NHL. We call it Pucking the Trends.

        HOT TEAM: Detroit Red Wings

The preseason questions are always the same, right? Are the Red Wings too old? Has their Stanley Cup window closed? Is there a new team – perhaps these days, the Chicago Blackhawks qualify – to take the torch and carry it for the Western Conference for the long term?

Well, the latter is still up for discussion. The high-flying Blackhawks, salary-cap casualties not withstanding, can still easily become the league’s next dynasty. But for now – and that’s what bettors truly care about, the now – the Red Wings have made an early-season statement:

They’re still around. They’re still winning. And they don’t really have any intentions of going away anytime soon.

The Red Wings dropped a classic, run-and-gun, Western Conference tilt in Vancouver Saturday night, 6-4, to the Canucks, but are still 6-3-1 in their last 10 games, and have won six of their last eight headed into Monday night’s game vs. Phoenix.

There was a lot of talk in the offseason, and preseason for that matter, about the acquisition of Mike Modano, the ageless American forward who keeps on ticking and kicking. And he’s been OK, make no mistake. With two goals headed into Monday’s action, there really shouldn’t be much more expected from him.

But the resurgence – and the rebound from last year’s Detroit disappointment – has clearly been about Pavel Datsyuk and Johan Franzen, who have each netted six goals each, and have struck fear – once again – in Western Conference goalies.

Still very much a veteran team, it’ll be interesting to see how the Red Wings respond Monday night, coming off a road swing, in which they went 2-1. Some teams suffer a letdown when they return to familiar surroundings. Others thrive.

        COLD TEAM: Nashville Predators
It all started so well for the Predators, didn’t it? While some of the Western Conference giants stumbled out of the gates early on, Nashville pounced to the tune of three straight wins to open the season, and recorded points – amazingly enough – in their first eight games.

Well, that ended, folks. Nashville closed October with consecutive losses to conclude that point streak, and have opened November with three more losses. All told, the Predators have allowed 21 goals in the five-game skid.

There’s still plenty of time for Nashville to bounce back, certainly. But it should be noted that the Central Division has no cupcakes, and any prolonged slump could doom the Predators, or any other team in that patch of real estate.

Remember, you’re talking about the Blackhawks, Red Wings and St. Louis Blues – for starters – and the Columbus Blue Jackets have a little jump in their skates early on, as well. That division is shaping up to be a monster.

The Predators might be best to shake off this rust … and soon.

        OVER PLAY: Washington Capitals
Alex Ovechkin and the Capitals are up to their normal, regular-season tricks again. Washington, in its last four games, has been involved 31 goals, for and against.

The Capitals see the highest totals of any team in the NHL but their shaky goaltending continues to make them a strong play for the over. The under cashed in eight of their first 10 games but the over is 3-1 over their last four.

Jump on the over any time you see oddsmakers putting out 5.5 totals on the Capitals.

        UNDER PLAY: Columbus Blue Jackets
The Blue Jackets, as we mentioned, are off to a surprising start. Their new coach, Scott Arniel, has installed a defense-first attitude, and that combined with some timely offense, has worked in Ohio.

But remember, we said timely offense, not terrific offense.

Keep Columbus – perhaps a forgotten team in Las Vegas – in your back pocket when looking for under plays. In their last seven games they have only reached six goals for and against – the magic number in hockey totals – once.

And in three of those games, they only reached three. Not a bad little trend for those who like defense, goalies and cashing in on offensive futility.

        Surveying the schedule:
** Monitor these Coyotes, who have four games in six days this week, and conclude the stretch with back-to-back home games Friday and Saturday, vs. Calgary and St. Louis, respectively. Might be some tired legs in the desert by then.

** At least the Buffalo Sabres, who perhaps turned a corner with a 3-2 shootout win at Toronto Saturday night, have a few days to prepare for what could be a difficult four-day stretch this week. Buffalo, still with just four wins on the season, have to play three games in a 96-hour span, beginning Wednesday. They play at New Jersey that night, at the New York Rangers the following night, then rush home to face Ovechkin and Washington on Saturday.

            Daily Sports Roundup: November 9

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Jazz travel to Miami to take on the Heat, while the Lightning play host to the Maple Leafs, and Toledo does battle with Northern Illinois.

            Colliding on the gridiron . . .

Week 11 of the college football season gets underway on Tuesday night with a Mid-American conference clash between Toledo and Northern Illinois. The Rockets (6-3 SU, 5-4 ATS) bounced Eastern Michigan 42-7 on the road last time out, with Terrance Owens throwing for 234 yards and four touchdowns for Toledo that day. The Huskies (7-2 SU, 6-2 ATS) are coming off a 28-21 road win over Western Michigan in which Chandler Harnish threw for 214 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Both Toledo and Northern Illinois are 5-0 in Mid-American conference play so far this season.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up seven games on Tuesday, with Denver at Indiana, Cleveland at New Jersey, the Clippers at New Orleans, New York at Milwaukee, Detroit at Portland, Minnesota at the Lakers, and Utah at Miami. The Jazz (3-3 SU, 2-4 ATS) slipped past the Clippers 109-107 in double overtime at home in their last game on Saturday, as Deron Williams led the way with a team-high 30 points. Paul Millsap picked up 25 points and 13 rebounds for Utah in that contest. The Heat (5-2 SU, 4-3 ATS) got past New Jersey 101-89 at home in their last game on Saturday. Dwyane Wade had 29 points for Miami in that contest, while LeBron James had 23 points, and Chris Bosh had 21 points.

            Taking a trip around the rink . . .

As well, there are seven games on tap around the National Hockey League on Tuesday, with Edmonton at Carolina, Vancouver at Montreal, Washington at the Rangers, Atlanta at Ottawa, Calgary at Colorado, Anaheim at San Jose, and Toronto at Tampa Bay. The 5-5-3 Maple Leafs have been tagged with a loss in each of their last five games, falling 3-2 in a shootout to the Sabres in their last game on Saturday night. Mikhail Grabovski and Nikolai Kulemin scored for Toronto in that defeat, while J-S Giguere stopped 29 of 31 Buffalo shots. The 7-4-2 Lightning were beaten 5-2 in San Jose in their last game on Saturday, with Martin St. Louis and Steve Stamkos scoring goals for Tampa in that loss.

              Tuesday's six-pack

-- ESPN changed its Sunday Night baseball announcers; Joe Morgan is mercifully gone; for some reason, they also let Jon Miller go. They had been on Sunday nights together for the last twenty years.

-- Robert Downey Jr will be the first-ever voice of Mr Peanut in new line of Planters peanut commercials. Mr Peanut has been around since 1916. Its about time he came out of his shell........hehe

-- World Series of Poker is down to two players as I type this; ESPN starts broadcasting final table action Tuesday night. Whoever wins is going to get a check for $8.9M. Nice. The last two guys are 23, 24.

-- Pitt held off spunky Rhode Island in first college hoop game of year on TV; if URI plays that way all year, they're an NCAA team.

-- There are 120 I-A college football teams; weird that Michigan is the 106th-ranked defensive team. Just doesn't seem normal.

-- Mike Tirico used the word "fiasco" in the first half-hour of the game Monday night; not a good sign for the 2-6 Bengals.

              *************************************

Tuesday's List of 13: Our NFL List of 13.........

              13) Chiefs—Have to be sick by how they lost at Oakland. Should have been up at least 13-0 at half, then they let Jacoby Ford run amok in the second half, on a soggy field.

              12) Buccaneers—Freeman is pretty good QB; how about him, McCoy and Bradford, all Big 12 alumni in last couple years?

              11) Eagles—I’d like to see a stat on Michael Vick’s yards per rush in 4th quarter of games; when the defenders get tired, he looks like an Olympic sprinter when he takes off.

              10) Titans—Jeff Fisher is latest coach to take a whack at coaching Randy Moss. Good luck.

              9) Patriots— Browns ran ball for 220 yards against them Sunday. This is the stretch of games where they’ll miss Moss’ deep threat.

              8) Falcons—Wasn’t impressed by how they let Tampa Bay back in game once they got up 14-0. Good game with Ravens Thursday.

              7) Ravens—You watch all the games at once Sunday, and Baltimore’s defenders just looked faster and meaner than most everyone else.

              6) Jets—Limped through two weeks of NFC North competition, but came through when it counted in Motor City.

              5) Packers—Clay Matthews is your 2010 NFL Defensive MVP.

              4) Saints—Should get healthier after bye week; can champs generate a running game?

              3) Colts—Hard to believe that at 7:15 Sunday, with Raiders/Colts both in 2:00 drill, that Jason Campbell would be the one to produce the winning points for his team, and not #18. .

              2) Steelers-- Hung on at end Monday night, after almost blowing 27-7 lead. Took some injury hits on OL last night.

              1) Giants—Dominating teams right now. Hard to believe they trailed Carolina at halftime at home in Week 1.
