College football opening line report: Week 11

Listen, there are important games all over the slate this weekend in college football. It is, after all, mid-November, and the stakes -- as a result -- have been raised in the conference as well as the BCS races.

But you're going to have a tough time finding two programs that need a win more -- all things considered -- than the two who will meet in South Bend, Ind., on Saturday.

Utah, fresh off a humiliation at home to TCU, needs to regain some national respect. Notre Dame, well, the Irish they just need something, anything positive to happen in what has become another nightmare of a season.

So, knowing all of that, just who does Las Vegas think needs this victory more this weekend? The angry Utes? Or the disheartened Irish?

"We expect Utah to rebound," said Pete Korner of the Sports Club in Las Vegas. "When teams of that level see their season end because of a loss, everyone gives up on them and bettors may go the other way. But the fact that bowls will start to look the other way, and all the attention will be gone, well, that might just motivate this team."

Korner made Utah a 4-point road favorite.

The Utes want to get to as big a bowl as they can, especially after their big-time, BCS dreams were smashed by the Horned Frogs in Salt Lake City. For the Irish, it's about making a bowl, period. They went without one last season, and the year before, they settled for the Hawaii Bowl. Not exactly waking up the echoes, right?

"They're at home, and anything can happen," Korner said. "But there's a lot going on at Notre Dame right now, and we just expect Utah to be more focused."

And with that, let's take a look at some of the other marquee games in Week 11, and the opening opinion circulating around in Las Vegas:

Pitt (-4.5) at UConn

"Big game in the Big East on a Thursday night," Korner said. "But there are a lot of injuries at play for UConn and we really like the way Pitt has rebounded. I can see this line going higher."

Iowa (-12) at Northwestern

"We see no reason to bet Northwestern here," Korner said. "Iowa is still very much in the mix for a big bowl game and to get there, they're really going to have to run up scores."

Penn State (+18) at Ohio State

"We don't see too much of a game here, either," Korner said. "Ohio State will come out quickly, and we'll just have to see what the score is around garbage time. Any time it's around 20, it usually comes down to garbage time."

Georgia (+8.5) at Auburn

"Georgia's going to be fighting for their coach, and that helps," Korner said. "But I think this line is right where it should be. I don't see an upset, but Georgia can hang around."

South Carolina (+7) at Florida

"South Carolina can win this one, but Florida's coming around finally," Korner said. "I had a bad power rating on Florida early in the year, but they're maturing now. They've looked good."

Mississippi State (+16) at Alabama

"Anyone's guess on Alabama now that they have two losses," Korner said. "They could rebound, or they may not care anymore. Tough to say. But we went high here, see if the Alabama money slows a little. It could be a take for Mississippi State. Let's see where the number goes."

Toledo Rockets at Northern Illinois Huskies (-11)

The leaders in the MAC West Division meet for top honors in the conference Tuesday night. Let’s take a look at how they match up.

Destiny calls

The winner of Tuesday’s game will be in control of its own destiny in the MAC West Division race.

It is the most anticipated league game for UT since the conclusion of the 2005 season when Rockets went 9-3, finishing up the campaign with a 45-13 win over UTEP in the GMAC Bowl.

“With the emotions riding high and intensity soaring through the locker room, it's time for the Rockets to take flight and go to war with the Huskies,” said UT offensive tackle John Morookain.

“This game is the biggest game of the year, and maybe of our lives to this point.”

Rocketing up the charts

The Rockets are 5-0 in the MAC for the first time since the 2004 campaign. Toledo also began that season 5-0 before winning the West Division with a 7-1 conference record and going on to win the MAC Championship Game.

Toledo, who hasn't had a winning record since 2005, was picked to finish fourth in the MAC West in the preseason media MAC poll.

Second-year head coach Tim Beckman inherited a team that went 3-9 in 2008. Beckman led UT to a 5-7 mark in his rookie campaign and now has the Rockets bowl-eligible and in the thick of the MAC Championship race.

Toledo has won three straight games, most recently a convincing 42-7 win at Eastern Michigan on October 30. Redshirt-freshman quarterback Terrance Owens stepped in for the injured Austin Dantin to throw for 234 yards and four touchdowns.

Dantin, who injured his shoulder on the second drive of the game, will not play versus NIU and could miss the remainder of the regular season.

Hot dogs

Northern Illinois is the hottest team in the Mid-American Conference, winners of six straight games, including an exciting 28-21 win at Western Michigan that wasn't settled until an interception with 39 seconds to play.

NIU's only two losses this year have been on the road at Iowa State (27-10) and Illinois (28-22).

In addition, Northern Illinois defensive end Jake Coffman was named the Mid-American Conference West Division Defensive Player of the Week after recording four tackles and an interception in NIU's victory over Western Michigan.

Harnish racing

The Huskies are led by the one-two rushing punch of senior running back Chad Spann and junior quarterback Chandler Harnish.

Harnish became the first quarterback in Northern Illinois history to pick up back-to-back MAC West weekly honors after earning MAC West Offensive Player of the Week recognition following the Akron and Temple games.

Spann leads the MAC with 1000 yards and tops the conference with 12 touchdowns. Harnish has 559 yards rushing and leads the MAC with 5.9 yards per carry.

In eight starts at quarterback for the Huskies this season, Harnish ranks sixth in the MAC in rushing and owns the highest average per carry of any back in the league's Top 10. The fleet-footed quarterback has four runs of 37 yards or longer.

With 117 yards on 11 carries at Illinois, Harnish passed the 1,000-yard mark for his career. He now has 1,327 yards on 302 attempts with four career 100-yard games. He is only the third Huskies quarterback to gain 1,000 rushing yards.

Deja vu

The last time a Northern Illinois team won five (or more) straight games to open a Mid-American Conference season was 2004. The similarities between that year and 2010 are a little eerie, right down to the dates on the calendar.

In 2004, NIU started the year 1-2 with a home win in the second game and road losses at Maryland and Iowa State. Joe Novak's Huskies then won six straight MAC games between September 24 and October 30 to improve their record to 7-2 overall, 6-0 in the MAC.

That lead into a Tuesday, November 9 ESPN2 showdown for the MAC West, versus a Toledo team that was 5-1 in the league and 6-3 overall.

The Rockets emerged victorious in that game, 31-17, and went on to play in the MAC Championship game.

As Yogi Berra would say, could this be “deja vu all over again?”

Back in time

• The Huskies have won 10 of their last 11 and seven straight league home games. NIU's only home league loss over the last three seasons came in overtime to Central Michigan in 2008.

• Under Jerry Kill, Northern Illinois is 13-3 on Brigham Field, including a 5-1 record last year and a 4-0 mark so far in 2010.

• In three seasons under Kill, the Huskies are a perfect 19-0 when they rush for 200 or more yards in a game, including a 7-0 mark in 2010. On the other hand, when opponents have held NIU below 200 yards rushing, Northern Illinois' record is 1-15.

• This will be the 38th meeting between Toledo and Northern Illinois, with UT leading the series, 29-8. Toledo has won 14 of the last 16 meetings and holds an 11-6 record in DeKalb.

• The Rockets are 5-1 straight up and against the spread as underdogs in this series.

Miami (Ohio) Redhawks at Bowling Green Falcons (+2.5, 50)

For the second night in a row, the Mid-American Conference has the college football world all to itself.

Bowling Green is just playing out the string at 2-7 overall and 1-4 in the MAC, but the RedHawks still are in contention for the East Division title at 4-1 in the conference (5-4 overall). If Miami (Ohio) can win this game and then at Akron next week, the season finale against Temple could be for a spot in the conference title game.

Miami (Ohio) has alternated wins and losses in the past six games. It beat Buffalo 21-9 behind 231 yards passing and two touchdowns from quarterback Zac Dysert on October 30. Miami (Ohio), which has won its past two on the road, needs just one win to become bowl eligible for the first time since 2005.

The Falcons had lost five in a row before surprising Central Michigan, 17-14, on October 30, thanks to a one-yard touchdown run by Jordan Hopgood with 21 seconds remaining.

Miami (Ohio) leads the all-time series with Bowling Green 41-20-5, including going 19-9-4 on the road. It has won nine of the past 11 meetings but did lose, 35-14, last year. But it has won five straight at Doyt Perry Stadium.

Team matchups

Bowling Green receiver Kamar Jorden certainly will be a focus of the Miami (Ohio) defense. Jordan has 76 catches in the first nine games and with an average of 8.44 receptions per game, he leads the MAC and is third nationally. His 825 yards receiving are good for 91.67 yards per game, which is 14th nationally.

Falcons quarterback Matt Schilz has completed 163 of 270 passes for 1,546 yards and five touchdowns. Leading that last-second win against CMU was the first fourth-quarter comeback of his career. The ground game is led by Willie Geter, who has 566 yards and four touchdowns. But that unit ranks last in the MAC and nationally at just 62.3 yards per game.

Defensively, the Falcons are allowing 33.9 points and 425.3 yards per game, ranking 11th and 10th in the conference. Bowling Green is second in the conference with 25 takeaways.

Miami receiver Nick Harwell has been on a roll of his own with 33 catches for 475 yards over the past four games. He had only two catches before this recent run. Dysert has 2,185 passing yards in 2010, including 320.7 per game over the last three games. There’s only one team worse in the nation this season than Miami (Ohio) on the ground (62.8 ypg) and that’s Bowling Green.

On defense, five of Miami (Ohio)’s nine opponents have been held to less than 100 yards rushing, including the Florida Gators. The Redhawks defense has caused 20 turnovers, which is tied for 11th in the country.

Injury report

Bowling Green coach Dave Clawson says he expects safety Keith Morgan to return this week. Morgan did not play at Central Michigan after suffering a concussion the previous week. Clawson also said junior center Ben Bojicic has been practicing but remains questionable. Cornerback Cameron Truss also remains questionable.

Miami (Ohio) expects left offensive tackle Matt Kennedy, who has missed five starts with an ankle injury, and defensive end Mwanza Wamulumba, who has been out four weeks with a sprained ankle, to return. Safety Dante Taylor, who saw action in six of the first seven games, has missed the last two due to injury and also should play. Linebacker Ryan Kennedy, one of the top tacklers in the Mid-American Conference after four games, hasn’t played since and is questionable.

- With a 5-4 record, Miami (Ohio) now has four more victories than it recorded in all of 2009 (1-11). That ties Maryland for the best improvement in the country so far this season.

Pittsburgh Panthers at Connecticut Huskies (+5.5, 46.5)

Pittsburgh looks to strengthen its hold on the top spot in the Big East Conference when it visits Connecticut on Thursday night.

Odds

Books opened with the Huskies listed as 6.5-point home underdogs Thursday. That number has been bet down as low as +5, forcing action on the other side and settling the spread at +5.5 as of Wednesday afternoon.

The total opened at 47 points and has since been moved to as low as 46 points with action on the under.

The Big finish

Pitt (5-3, 3-0 Big East, 4-2-2 ATS) has a comfortable lead atop the Big East standings. While the Panthers are perfect in conference play, each of the other seven teams have two conference losses.

That includes Connecticut (4-4, 1-2, 4-4 ATS), which once was considered a contender for the Big East crown and the automatic BCS bowl bid that comes along with it. Now the Huskies are playing for their bowl lives, needing two victories in their final four games just to become bowl eligible.

Pitt is it

At the beginning of the season, this game would likely have been circled as a matchup between the league’s top teams, but only the Panthers have held up their end of the bargain.

Pittsburgh has won four straight and looks to be the class of the conference with a balanced offense and strong defense.

The Panthers are coming off a 20-3 victory over Louisville on Oct. 30 and are trying to improve to 4-0 in Big East play for the second straight season.

Pitt boasts a strong running game with Dion Lewis and Ray Graham sharing the duties in the backfield, but it has been the improved play of sophomore quarterback Tino Sunseri that has made the Panthers a more complete team.

Sunseri has completed 68.4 percent of his passes for 983 yards and eight touchdowns with just a pair of interceptions in Pitt’s last four games. He completed 63 percent of his passes for 689 yards and had four touchdowns and two interceptions as Pitt split its first four games.

Thanks in part to Sunseri’s improvement, Pitt has outscored its opponents 106 to 38 during its current three-game win streak.

The Pittsburgh defense ranks first in the Big East and eighth in the country against the run, allowing 93.75 yards per game. The Panthers will be tested by UConn running back Jordan Todman.

UConn do it!

Todman is fourth in the country in rushing at 136.3 yards per game. He has found it tougher going lately, though. Opposing defenses have begun to key on him, while trying to make the Huskies move the ball through the air. Todman has rushed for 80 and 113 yards in his last two games against Louisville and West Virginia.

History

The series is tied 3-3 with Pitt having won last season, 24-21 at Heinz Field. The Panthers are 1-2 at Connecticut but might be more concerned about playing a game on a Thursday night.

Pittsburgh has a 6-10 record on Thursday and has dropped nine of its last 11, including a 31-3 loss to Miami on Sept. 23.
