    Daily Sports Roundup: November 8

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The college hoops season begins on four fronts, while the Suns take on the Grizzlies again, and the Bengals host the Steelers on MNF.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

It's Pittsburgh at Cincinnati on Monday Night Football this week, with the Bengals (2-5 SU, 2-5 ATS) looking to snap a four-game losing streak. Cincinnati was beaten 22-14 at home by Miami last game, as Carson Palmer threw for just 156 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. The Steelers (5-2 SU, 4-3 ATS) fell 20-10 in New Orleans last time out, as Ben Roethlisberger passed for 295 yards with zero touchdowns and one interception. Rashard Mendenhall ran for 71 yards and a score for Pittsburgh in that contest. Oddsmakers have the Steelers listed as 5-point road favorites for Monday night's game, while the total for the matchup has been pegged at 41 points.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

There are six games on tap around the NBA on Monday, with Atlanta at Orlando, Golden State at Toronto, San Antonio at Charlotte, Denver at Chicago, Boston at Dallas, and Phoenix at Memphis. The Suns played host to the Grizzlies on Friday night and came away with a 128-118 victory in double overtime. Jason Richardson led the way for Phoenix in that game with 38 points and eight rebounds, while Steve Nash picked up 25 points and nine assists. Hedo Turkoglu had 18 points on the night. Marc Gasol and Rudy Gay each scored 26 points in the loss for Memphis, and O.J. Mayo had 23 points.

As well, the college basketball season gets underway on Monday with regional action in the annual 2k Sports Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer. The first night of games has Rhode Island at No. 5 Pittsburgh, UC Irvine at No. 13 Illinois, Seattle at Maryland, and Navy at Texas. The championship round of the tournament (featuring Pittsburgh, Illinois, Maryland, and Texas) will get going on November 18 at Madison Square Garden.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there's just one game on the National Hockey League schedule for Monday, with Phoenix at Detroit. The Coyotes and Red Wings met in Detroit on October 28, with Phoenix pulling out a 4-2 road victory. Lauri Korpikoski scored twice for the Coyotes in that victory, while Radim Vrbata and Keith Yandle had one goal apiece. Ilya Bryzgalov was the game's First Star with a 43-save performance. Johan Franzen and Tomas Holmstrom replied for the Wings, while Chris Osgood stopped 32 of 35 Coyotes shots.

Bettors' best friend: Monday's wagering tips

      Lines to watch

The Cincinnati Bengals opened as 3.5-point underdogs at home to the Pittsburgh Steelers but are now listed at +5.5.

      Who’s hot

San Antonio Spurs are 8-3-1 ATS in their last 12 meetings with the Charlotte Bobcats.

Golden State Warriors have covered in each of their four wins this season.

Denver Nuggets have covered in 10 of their last 14 games against the Chicago Bulls.

      Who’s not

Phoenix Coyotes have two wins in their last eight games.

The Toronto Raptors have covered in only four of their last 17 home games.

Boston Celtics have won four straight but covered in just one of those victories.

      Key stat

38 – Number of wins the Pittsburgh Steelers have playing in MNF, second best in NFL history. The Steelers are also 12-4 playing in prime time games since Mike Tomlin took over coaching duties four years ago and have outscored opponents 115-43 in winning their last five games on Monday night.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Jameer Nelson (ankle) Orlando Magic – Orlando coach Stan Van Gundy said he was “hopeful” Nelson would be fit to start Monday against the Atlanta Hawks. Chris Duhon started in Nelson’s place Saturday against Charlotte, scoring four points and posting nine assists in 34 minutes of work.

      Game of the day

Pittsburgh Steelers at Cincinnati Bengals (+5.5, 41)

      Notable quotable

“The expectations were set so high and guys just kind of felt with all the good weapons we have that it would just fall into place, but even that takes work. That’s what we played with (an edge) and that’s how we played. We played like we had something to prove every game versus coming in this year with a lot of hype.” – Cincinnati Bengals right guard Bobbie Williams on the Bengals’ 2-5 start to the season.

      Tips and notes

The Phoenix Suns are getting some serious production from their bench, which is chipping in about 40 points per game so far this season. Goran Dragic scored 13 points in 18 minutes of work backing up Steve Nash in the 123-118 overtime win over Memphis, while Channing Frye and Jared Dudley were both strong with pressuring defense. When Phoenix handed Atlanta its first loss of the year as a 5.5-point underdog on Sunday, Dudley scored 15 with six rebounds in 20 minutes of floor time and Josh Childress banked 11 points and six rebounds in 22 minutes.

The Phoenix Coyotes will be without captain Shane Doan for a while after he suffered a lower-body injury on Friday. The team isn’t talking about the injury but lists Doan as week-to-week. He said he felt a “tweak” following a collision with Dallas defenseman Nicklas Grossman. Doan has struggled with only three points in nine games this year.

Playing against a Denver club that was without three of its main big men, Dallas’ center duo of Brendan Haywood and Tyson Chandler managed just one field goal in the 103-92 loss on Saturday night. The Mavericks may have to rethink this center strategy sooner rather than later. Chandler is averaging just 6.2 points per game, while Haywood checks in with 2.8.

        Monday's six-pack

-- Was totally amazed Friday when a woman solved a 6-word puzzle on Wheel of Fortune when she only had one letter to work with. It might have been the best solve in program history, and that goes back all the way to 1975.

-- I'VE GOT A GOOD FEELING ABOUT THIS.........that was the puzzle, and all that was showing was the L in feeling. Totally amazing that she solved it that quickly, and I sincerely mean that.

-- Denny Hamlin won the NASCAR race in Texas and now leads the Chase for the Sprint Cup with two races left to go this season.

-- I had no idea TV commentators weren't allowed to contribute to any political candidates; MSNBC's Keith Olbermann was suspended for giving $2,400 each to three candidates this fall.

-- Anyone remember why Sparky Anderson left the Reds? He led the team for nine years; his only losing season was in Year 2. Less than a year after leaving Cincinnati, he was managing the Tigers.

-- Francesco Molinari won the World Golf Tour event in China and pockets a cool $1.2 million. Lee Westwood finished second.

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday........

        13) NFL has to change this rule about receivers in the end zone having to keep the ball even after the fall to the ground; it makes no freakin' sense. It cost Detroit a win in Week 1, and it cost Houston a TD Sunday, and it is stupid-- check out the replay of Arian Foster's catch in the last minute of the first half Sunday. Common sense says thats a touchdown!!!!

        12) Chiefs had to be kicking themselves all the way home from Oakland after their OT loss to the Raiders. KC led 10-0 late in first half, had easy FG in their sights, but Cassel threw an end zone INT, half ended with Chiefs leading only 10-0, then Oakland ran the second half kickoff back for a TD and the game became a tight one when it shouldn't have been.

        11) Oakland won despite playing the last 44:31 of the game without any replay challenges. Coach Cable tried a unsuccessful fake punt and also challenged two plays, all in the first 15:29. Game had 27 penalties, most in any NFL game this season, with Oakland penalized for 140 yards.

        10) Chargers finally won a road game, but not before they got another punt blocked. San Diego averaged 12.1 yards/pass attempt, despite most of their receivers being out injured. Philip Rivers is really, really good.

        9) Buffalo lost by three points for third week in a row. Watched this game in a bar where there were several Buffalo fans; at the risk of being Captain Obvious, I'll say this-- losing ain't fun.

        8) Brett Favre's 446 passing yards gave him his first 400+-yard passing day since 1993; thats a long time to go in between the biggest days in his career. Sunday was also Favre's 17th career overtime game (9-8).

        7) Why was Drew Brees still passing with 9:07 left and Sants leading the hapless Panthers 27-3? If Brees goes down, down go the Saints. Would be smart to be a little more protective of their meal ticket. By the way, former Missouri QB Chase Daniel is Brees'backup.

        6) Saints scored a defensive TD in the last minute of the 3rd quarter at Carolina Sunday; it was their first defensive TD this season, Last year at this time, New Orleans had already scored seven TDs on defense.

        5) People can call for Wade Phillips' head all they want, but even if he gets fired, the main problem remains-- a flawed roster with a lousy OL and a GM (owner Jones) who is overmatched in the position. He's good as an owner-- he needs a top-flight personnel man to fortify his roster.

        4) Speaking of which, Seattle made 12 personnel moves last week, most in the NFL. Seahawks lost last two games by combined score of 74-10. They're banged-up on both lines and got booed at home Sunday.

        3) Lions kicker Hanson got hurt, so rookie DT Suh attempted PAT after the second Detroit TD; he clanked it off the right upright, leaving score at 13-10. Hanson came back to kick the next PAT for Detroit. Lions also screwed up clock management when they threw the ball in last 2:00 in a game they led 20-17 and with Jets out of timeouts. Jets got ball back, kicked typing FG at the gun and won it in OT. Bitter loss for the Lions.

        2) Andy Reid has now won his last 12 post-bye games, covering nine of last eleven, with the two non-covers by a point and half a point.

        1) With great pleasure, I am listing the eight NFL playoff teams, if they began on Monday morning........
        AFC: Jets-Ravens-Titans-Chiefs......Wild Cards Patriots/Steelers.
        NFC: Giants-Packers-Falcons-Rams....Wild Cards: Saints/Eagles

Denver Nuggets at Chicago Bulls [8:00 PM ET]

NUGGETS: Denver is off to a 4-2 SU start in the brutally difficult Northwest division. It's vital that Denver gets off to a quick start this year considering all the trade rumors surrounding both F Carmelo Anthony and G Chauncey Billups. Denver has scored more than 100 PTS in 5 of their 6 games this season. The Nuggets are averaging 104.5 PPG this season, led by Anthony. Anthony is averaging 24.7 PPG this season, while shooting better than 51% from the field. F Al Harrington is earning his keeps for the Nuggets as well, as he's 2nd on the team in scoring at 16.2 PPG. Harrington is averaging 2.3 three pointers made per game this season. The Nuggets have won 2 of their 3 games outright as the listed underdog this year. The Nuggets are 6-17-1 ATS in their last 24 games against the Central division. The Nuggets are 3-10-1 ATS in their last 14 road games overall. Denver is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games after scoring 100 points or more in their previous game. The Nuggets are 1-9-1 ATS in their last 11 road games against a team with a winning home record.

Nuggets are 0-7-1 ATS last 8 games against the Eastern Conference.
Under is 10-3 last 13 games following a SU win.

Key Injuries - C Nene (groin) is questionable.

                Projected Score: 105

BULLS: (-2.5, O/U 207) Chicago is 2-3 SU to start this season, and are riding a 2 game losing streak entering tonight. The Bulls are expected to contend for a top seed this year in the Eastern Conference. Chicago isn't playing defense like they are accustomed to this year, as they have allowed at least 100 PTS in each of their losses this year. Through 5 games, the Bulls are allowing 105 PPG this year. PG Derrick Rose is again the focal point of this offense. Rose is averaging 25 PPG and nearly 10 APG for the Bulls as the unquestioned team leader. Rose is making a point to prove that he should be considered MVP of the NBA this year. The Bulls lost both games against Denver last year, so there is a revenge factor heading into this contest tonight. The Bulls are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games after allowing 100 points or more in their previous game. The Bulls are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games against a team with a winning percentage above .600%. Chicago is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games against a team with a winning SU record. The Bulls are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games against the Northwest division. Chicago is 26-12 ATS in their last 38 games following an ATS win.

Bulls are 12-1 ATS last 13 games following a SU loss.
Over is 5-1 last 6 games against a team with a winning percentage above .600%.

Key Injuries - F Carlos Boozer (hand) is out.

Projected Score: 109 (OVER-Total of the Day)

Atlanta Hawks at Orlando Magic (N/A)

These two teams haven’t played since last year’s playoff series. The Magic abused the Hawks back in May, sweeping them out of the postseason and covering in each game. Atlanta should be looking for some redemption here and things should be a bit easier for them because of Orlando’s injury problems.

Starting guards Jameer Nelson and Vince Carter are both banged up and questionable heading into Monday’s game against the undefeated Hawks. Nelson missed Sunday’s game with a sprained ankle while Carter injured himself slipping on a wet spot on the floor Saturday against the Bobcats.

Orlando coach Stan Van Gundy has been trying a bunch of different starting lineups so far, jumping back and forth from big and smaller units.

"Guys are going to have to get used to it," Van Gundy told the Orlando Sentinel. "I'm going to use our entire roster. And they've got to stay ready and perform. I'll be honest. I'll give more leeway to Jameer, Vince, Rashard (Lewis) and Dwight (Howard). But the other guys are not going to get a ton of leeway, especially in terms of their energy.

"I'll live with guys missing shots, but if I don't see the energy I think I need to see, I'll try to find somebody else."

Atlanta has its ducks in a row and should be looking for blood in this contest

                Pick: Hawks

San Antonio Spurs at Charlotte Bobcats (+3, 188.5)

Who said San Antonio is an old, slow boring team? The Spurs are off to a 4-1 start and much of the credit belongs to the club’s surprisingly effective offense.

Last year point guard Tony Parker missed 25 games because of injuries and small forward Richard Jefferson seemed confused out on the court. It’s been a different story this season.

Parker is back to his lightning quick self and Jefferson is more confident with his role on this team.

The result has been a charged San Antonio offensive attack. The Spurs are averaging 109 points per game and shooting 48 percent from the field.

Charlotte won’t be able to keep up with the Spurs on Monday.

                Pick: Spurs

College hoop season starts tonight-- log on every day for information and selections from now until the Final Four in April. Enjoy the ride.

Rhode Island is pretty good, but lost two of top three scorers from LY; they're more of a running team, while Pitt relies on sturdy defense. Pitt is picked to win Big East this year, with four starters back from LY and is fashionable choice to get to Final Four.

Maryland lost three starters from LY's team that was 13-3 in ACC, but they'll be more athletic, better on defense and lot less experienced. Hard to believe this is Gary Williams' 22nd year coaching the Terps. Seattle was 17-14 as a independent LY, beating Oregon State, Fresno State and Utah- they also lost to Oklahoma State by 22, Washington by 47- they played at 2nd-highest tempo in America LY, so this will be fast game.

Illinois has all five starters back from LY's 21-15/10-8 team; they're #4 pick in Big 11, #9 team in country. Big things are expected. Cal-Irvine is coached by former NBA assistant Turner, who inherits three starters from LY's 14-18/6-10 in weak Big West. Illini hasn't played as well at home in recent years.

Texas lost four starters from LY's chemistry-challenged 24-10/9-7 team that underachieved; they're picked #4 in Big 12, #19 in country. Navy is was 13-17/7-7 in Patriot League LY; they've got one really good scorer, a 6-3 wing who was 4th in Patriot in scoring LY. Middies are picked for 7th place in Patriot League this season.
