    Daily Sports Roundup: November 7

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Colts look for a win over the Eagles, the Packers meet the Cowboys, and the drivers of the Sprint Cup Series compete in Texas.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

The Colts (5-2 SU, 4-3 ATS) will be looking to run their winning streak to four games on Sunday when they play on the road against the Eagles (4-3 SU, 3-4 ATS) and returning quarterback Michael Vick. Indianapolis is coming off a 30-17 home win over Houston on Monday night, with Peyton Manning throwing for 268 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Reggie Wayne and Jacob Tamme had the TD catches for the Colts in that game. Philadelphia is coming off its bye week, most recently falling 37-19 on the road to Tennessee back on October 24. Kevin Kolb threw for 231 yards with one TD and two interceptions that day. Oddsmakers have the Eagles set as 3-point favorites for Sunday.

Also on the NFL slate for Sunday: San Diego (-3) at Houston, Arizona at Minnesota (-8), New Orleans (-6.5) at Carolina, New England (-4.5) at Cleveland, Tampa Bay at Atlanta (-8.5), Chicago (-3) at Buffalo, Miami at Baltimore (-5), the Jets (-4) at Detroit, the Giants (-7) at Seattle, and Kansas City at Oakland (-2.5). As well, Green Bay hosts Dallas in the Sunday night matchup. The Packers (5-3 SU, 4-4 ATS) blanked the Jets 9-0 on the road in their last game, with Mason Crosby booting three field goals for the game's only points. The Cowboys (1-6 SU, 1-6 ATS) are coming off their fourth straight loss, falling 35-17 at home to Jacksonville. Green Bay is pegged as a 7.5-point favorite in that game.

The Canadian Football League then closes out its regular season on Sunday with Toronto (8-9 SU, 8-9 ATS) at Montreal (12-5 SU, 8-9 ATS). The Argos and Als are already locked into their playoff positions, with Toronto finishing third in the East and Montreal holding down top spot in that division. The Als are 6-point favorites for Sunday.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

There are six games on the NBA's slate for Sunday, with Philadelphia at New York, Phoenix at Atlanta, Golden State at Detroit, Minnesota at Houston, Portland at the Lakers, and Boston at Oklahoma City. The Thunder improved to 3-2 SU and 2-3 ATS with a slim 107-106 road win over the Trail Blazers in their last game on Thursday night. Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook each picked up 28 points and 11 rebounds for Oklahoma City in that matchup, while Jeff Green was good for 19 points in that victory.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The National Hockey League has four games on the schedule for Sunday, with Philadelphia at Washington, Edmonton at Chicago, Nashville at Anaheim, and St. Louis at the Rangers. New York blanked the rival Devils 3-0 on the road in their last game on Friday night, as Henrik Lundqvist stopped all 33 New Jersey shots. Brandon Dubinsky had two goals for the Rangers in that contest, and Artem Anisimov had a pair of assists.

    Roaring around the track . . .

The Sprint Cup Series takes on Texas Motor Speedway on Sunday afternoon at the AAA Texas 500. Denny Hamlin, who won the Samsung Mobile 500 on the track back in April, is high on the oddsmakers' list at 11/2 heading into Sunday's event, with points leader Jimmie Johnson just ahead of him at 4/1. Johnson has a 14-point lead on Hamlin in the driver standings with just three races left in the season, with Kevin Harvick 38 points behind in third place. Oddsmakers have Harvick at 10/1 odds to grab the victory.

Meanwhile, the drivers of Formula 1 will be in South America on Sunday for the Brazilian Grand Prix. Fernando Alonso, who sits atop the drivers championship, is listed at 10/3 odds to pick up the win on Sunday, with Red Bull teammates Mark Webber (5/2) and Sebastian Vettel (15/8) also high on the odds list. Lewis Hamilton rounds out the day's contenders at 5/1. Oddsmakers also have Alonso set at -167 to win the drivers championship this season, with Webber at +225, and both Hamilton and Vettel at +1200.

Bettors' best friend: Sunday's wagering tips

Lines to keep an eye on

The Thunder opened as 2.5-point favorites against the Celtics, but the line is down to -1.5.

The Blackhawks opened at -220 against the Oilers, but the line has moved to -212.

      Who’s hot

The Philadelphia Flyers are 5-0 in their last five overall.

The St. Louis Blues are 5-0 in their last five overall.

The under is 7-0 in the Atlanta Hawks’ last seven home games.

The Tampa Bay Bucs are 5-0 ATS in their last five road games.

The New York Jets are 8-1 ATS in their last nine road games.

      Who’s not

The New York Rangers are 1-4 in their last five against the Western Conference.

The Minnesota Timberwolves are 0-5 ATS in their last five road games.

The Houston Rockets are 1-4 ATS in their last five overall.

The Dallas Cowboys are 0-4 ATS in their last four overall.

The San Diego Chargers are 0-4 ATS in their last four road games.

      Key stat

331.1 – Passing yards per game averaged by San Diego quarterback Philip Rivers so far this season. On Sunday, the Chargers' top-ranked passing offense is going up against the worst passing defense in the league in the Houston Texans. Houston is allowing 299.4 yards through the air per game, 17 more than any other team.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

San Diego tight end Antonio Gates is listed as doubtful for Sunday’s game against the Texans after spraining the plantar fascia in his right foot during last week’s win over Tennessee. Gates is not ruling himself out, but no player listed as doubtful has played in the following game so far this season for the Chargers. “Sunday morning may be an understatement this time,” Gates said of determining his status. “It might be an hour before the game. I know it's going to be tougher (to make a decision) than it was last week.”

      Biggest games on the slate

Tampa Bay Bucs at Atlanta Falcons (-9, 45.5)

Indianapolis Colts at Philadelphia Eagles (-3, 47)

      Notable quotable

“We’re the best team in the NFC. Yeah, I said it.” – Tampa Bay Bucs head coach Raheem Morris after his team beat Arizona last week to improve to 5-2, tied for the best record in the NFC.

“Best team in NFC? C'mon. We're going to go out and try to make a statement about the best team in the NFC.” – Falcons receiver Roddy White in response to Morris’ comments.

      Tips and notes

The Indianapolis Colts placed wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez on injured reserve on Saturday, ending his season. That’s been the story of the year for the injury-plagued Colts, who have still salvaged a 5-2 record heading into Sunday’s game at Philadelphia. But the problems go way beyond Gonzalez. With running backs Joseph Addai and Mike Hart not even making the trip, Indianapolis has only three healthy running backs for Sunday; Donald Brown, undrafted rookie Javarris James, and Andre Brown, fresh off the practice squad.

Golden State’s Stephen Curry returned from an ankle injury to score nine points in the final 2:35 in a comeback win over the Utah Jazz on Friday. The surprising Warriors are 4-1 this season heading into Sunday’s game at 1-5 Detroit. Defense and toughness seem to be turning things around for the previously woeful warriors. "We have a saying: DTW -- defense travels well," coach Keith Smart said after the win over Utah. "If you can lock into your defense, that's what they've done and that kept us in the game." Added Monta Ellis in comparing this team to last year’s squad: "We would have given up and lost by 20."

The Edmonton Oilers are struggling at 3-6-2, but they think a five-game road trip and a flurry of games in succession will help turn things around. They play 14 games and fly 13 times in the next 26 days, starting with Sunday's trip to Chicago. "It’ll be a big challenge, and a big opportunity for us, too," said forward Jordan Eberle. "The schedule has kind of been light so far. As a player you want to play and play and play. It’s good to practice, but everybody in this room is excited for this. It’s a good opportunity to get some wins." Chicago, meanwhile, has no rest day after winning in a shootout at Atlanta on Saturday night.

        Sunday's six-pack

Some pro football knowledge, thanks to espn.com, with Week 9 here.

-- Larry Fitzgerald is playing in his hometown for second time as a pro; in the first game, he caught 11 passes for 172 yards. Minnesota's defense hasn't sacked the QB in its last three games.

-- 10 individual NFL players have more sacks than the Bengals (6).

-- Chiefs are 6-11 on 4th down conversions this season.

-- With the Bills playing in Toronto Sunday, it means they'll go 35 days in between games on their actual home field in Orchard Park.

-- Giants' Hakeem Nicks has caught eight passes in red zone this year, with six of the eight going for touchdowns.

-- Kudos to DD Lohaus, on a strong Breeders' Cup this weekend. In Delaware, he's known as Lorilyn's husband, but on this website, he is a horse handicapper worth following. Here's his Fri/Sat numbers.......

        *************************************

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college football Saturday.......

        13) Penn State looked dead in water when Northwestern went up 21-0 with 0:58 left in first half, but Nittany Lions scored before the half, then held Wildcats scoreless rest of way to win 35-21 and get Joe Paterno his 400th career win, the most of any I-A football coach. Good for him.

        12) Say what you want about Les Miles, but he has the onions to make an out-of-the-box call; reverses on 4th-and-1, fake punts; he's winning in a season when his QB play is subpar, and he's winning in dramatic style. Jordan Jefferson did play much better against Alabama than he did for most of this season. He should start the rest of the year.

Its very big in Baton Rouge for Miles to beat Nick Saban, the coach who bolted LSU for the NFL, only to resurface in the SEC West two years later. With the NCAA taking it easy on Rich Rodriguez at Michigan, it looks like Miles could be at LSU for the forseeable future.

        11) Utah was ranked 5th in country, but TCU went to Salt Lake City and eviscerated the Utes, 47-7. Hard for me to visualize a national title game this season without the Horned Frogs in it.

        10) USC is 6-3; in four of their nine games, the losing team scored more than 30 points. Last night's game with Arizona State was truly bizarre, as Trojans won mainly because they blocked a Sun Devil PAT and ran it all the way back for two points, cutting the ASU lead to two, and setting up the winning field goal which gave Trojans the 34-33 win.

        9) Kansas State led Texas 39-0 at one point Saturday; Wildcats handed Mack Brown his fifth loss in six games despite throwing four passes in the entire game. Gilbert threw five INTs as things get worse in Austin. Yes, Texas threw more INTs than Kansas State threw passes.

        8) Brady Hoke is a rising coaching star; his San Diego State Aztecs are now 7-2 after beating Colorado State; two years ago, Hoke had Ball State undefeated until very late in the season. Apparently, he's very good at what he does, which might make him attractive to Minnesota or another bigger $$$ school that will be coach-hunting this winter (Arizona St?)

        7) Miami, FL may have found a QB by accident; freshman QB Stephen Morris passed for 286 yards as Hurricanes rallied in the last minute to beat Maryland 26-20. Not only did Jacory Harris and his backup have to get hurt for Morris to play, then he had to beat out the 3rd-string QB, who happens to be the offensive coordinator's son. Consider that done.

        6) Say goodbye to Colorado coach Dan Hawkins after Bufflaoes lost at Kansas 52-45. Colorado led 35-10 at the half, 45-17 with 13:00 left, but managed to smatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Yikes.

        5) Air Force won the Commander-in-Chief trophy for first time in eight years when it won 42-22 at West Point. Thats a very big deal for them.

        4) Illinois scored 65 points Saturday. Virginia scored 48. Colorado 45. Florida State/East Carolina 35. Louisiana Tech 34. Wyoming 31. What do these teams all have in common? They all lost.

        3) New Mexico upset Wyoming Saturday night, leaving Akron as only winless I-A team; Zips lost in OT Saturday, at Ball State.

        2) Horrendous try by Iowa State Saturday; trailing 31-24 in OT, ISU scores a TD, then tries a fake PAT. Kid who threw the pass threw just a pathetic, soft pass to the receiver, and it got broken up, depriving ISU of a chance to beat Nebraska two years in a row. When you're a 17-point underdog, you extend the game as long as possible, because the pressure is all on the other team. Just an incredibly knuckleheaded call that could easily cost the Cyclones a bowl bid.

        1) Biggest upset of week was North Carolina winning in Tallahassee, as Florida State's kicker missed a 40-yard FG with 0:02 left, giving UNC a 37-35 win. There were three OT games Saturday; favorite won all three.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Celtics at Oklahoma City Thunder (-1.5, 197)

Boston center Shaquille O’Neal has missed three straight games due to a knee injury and he is doubtful for Sunday’s showdown at Oklahoma City. In fact, O’Neal could sit out an entire four-game road trip this week.

The good news for the Celtics is that they have Glen Davis and Jermaine O’Neal to pick up the slack down low. O’Neal (Jermaine version) scored 12 points in two of the three games without Shaq, and Davis is averaging 13.7 ppg and 14.7 rpg this season.

The Celtics are 3-0 in the three games without Shaq and they have won their past two in overtime; on Wednesday against Milwaukee and on Friday against Chicago. In a clash with the up-and-coming Thunder (3-2), knowing how to win close games will likely be a factor.

“This is going to be big for us,” Kevin Garnett said of the road trip. “I think (the win over the Bulls) was important from a momentum standpoint of trying to carry the momentum over to this road trip. You don’t ever want to start a road trip with a loss. It’s a huge road trip for us.”

                Pick: Celtics

Phoenix Suns at Atlanta Hawks (-6, 207.5)

After a humiliating four-game playoff drubbing at the hands of Orlando last season, the Hawks could not have been expected to be the Eastern Conference’s last undefeated team one season later. But that is exactly the case for 6-0 Atlanta.

Marvin Williams and Mo Evans are still out for the Hawks, but they also missed Friday’s game at Minnesota and the visitors still prevailed. That’s what happens when you have a bench (even minus Evans) that can contribute 47 points a night, as Atlanta’s reserves did on Friday.

Jamal Crawford, who won last season’s Sixth Man Award, scored 22. “He gives us exactly what we need,” head coach Larry Drew said of Crawford. “He plays his role coming off the bench better than anybody I’ve seen.”

The Hawks’ schedule has not been daunting so far, but neither is a home matchup with Phoenix. “Last year we gave up games like this to teams that didn’t make the playoffs,” Al Horford noted after beating the Timberwolves. “We are heading in the right direction, and it’s good to see.”

                Pick: Hawks

St. Louis Blues at New York Rangers

St. Louis extended its surprising record to 8-1-2 with a shootout win over Boston on Saturday night.

The Blues are doing it with youth following the departures of Keith Tkachuk and Paul Kariya during the offseason, and the youth has given rise to a wave of momentum.

“Everyone has a voice now,” said defenseman Erik Johnson, 22. (Tkachuk and Kariya) were such key veterans and they had been around, so we would just let them do all the talking and if we were down a couple of goals we expected them to pick up the slack. Now it's been turned over to the younger group."

A big part of that group is goalie Jaroslav Halak, 25. Halak is 8-2 this season and has not lost a game in regulation. He made 33 saves while allowing just one goal in Saturday’s win over the Bruins.

                        Pick: Blues

Philadelphia Flyers at Washington Capitals (-155, 6)

Something has to give when the Flyers visit the Capitals on Sunday. Philadelphia (9-4-1) is 5-0 in its last five and Washington (9-4-0) is 6-1 at home this season.

Despite their impressive record, the Capitals made recent news in the goaltending department. Michal Neuvirth was pulled with 10 minutes to go in Friday’s 5-3 win over Boston after he gave up a 3-0 lead. Coach Bruce Boudreau, however, assured that Neuvirth will be back in the net against Philly.

"He's been so good for us," Boudreau said.. "We wouldn't have the record we have right now if it wasn't for him. I said, 'Don't worry about it.'"

"He's like the Chris Pronger in net," added defenseman Karl Alzner. "He gets things done and he makes it look effortless that's pretty tough to do as a goaltender."

                        Neuvirth is 8-3 with a 2.41 GAA and a .914 save percentage in 2010.

                        Pick: Capitals
