    Daily Sports Roundup: November 6

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: Top-ranked Oregon plays host to Washington, while TCU takes on Utah, and the Rockets look to break into the win column in San Antonio.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

A battle of unbeaten teams is one of five ranked matchups on the college football schedule for Saturday, as No. 6 Utah (8-0 SU, 6-1-1 ATS) plays host to No. 4 TCU (9-0 SU, 4-4 ATS). The Utes kept their perfect record intact with a 28-23 road win over Air Force last week, as Jordan Wynn threw for 148 yards with one touchdown and one interception. The Horned Frogs romped past UNLV 48-6 on the road last time out, as Andy Dalton was good for 252 yards and two scores through the air. Oddsmakers have TCU pegged as the 5-point favorite for Saturday, with the total for that matchup at 51.5.

No. 5 Alabama (-6.5) plays at No. 12 LSU in one of the other four ranked matchups on tap for Saturday, while it's also No. 22 Baylor at No. 19 Oklahoma State (-7.5), No. 17 Arkansas at No. 18 South Carolina (-4), and No.13 Arizona at No. 10 Stanford (-9.5). Elsewhere around the Top 25 it'll be No. 23 N.C. State at Clemson (-3.5), No. 7 Wisconsin (-20) at Purdue, Minnesota at No. 16 Michigan State (-24.5), No. 15 Iowa (-17.5) at Indiana, Chattanooga at No. 3 Auburn, Hawaii at No. 2 Boise State (-21), North Carolina at No. 24 Florida State (-10.5), No. 9 Nebraska (-19) at Iowa State, No. 25 Nevada (-11.5) at Idaho, No. 11 Oklahoma (-3) at Texas A&M, No. 14 Missouri (-4) at Texas Tech, and Washington at No. 1 Oregon, which is a whopping 35.5-point favorite.

As well, there are two games on the Canadian Football League schedule for Saturday, with B.C. at Hamilton and Edmonton at Saskatchewan. The Lions (7-10 SU, 7-10 ATS) are pegged as 3.5-point road favorites against the Tiger-Cats (9-8 SU, 9-8 ATS) on Saturday, while the Eskimos (7-10 SU, 7-10 ATS) are 1-point road underdogs against the Roughriders (9-8 SU, 8-9 ATS) in the day's second game. The Lions and Eskimos are tied for third in the West heading into their finales, but Edmonton has the tiebreaker.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA has nine games on its Saturday schedule, with Cleveland at Washington, Orlando at Charlotte, New Jersey at Miami, New Orleans at Milwaukee, Denver at Dallas, the Clippers at Utah, Toronto at Portland, Memphis at Sacramento, and Houston at San Antonio. The Rockets (0-4 SU, 1-3 ATS) remained winless on the season by falling 107-99 at home to New Orleans on Wednesday night. Kevin Martin and Aaron Brooks were both good for 18 points for Houston in that loss, while Yao Ming picked up 15 points on the night. The Spurs (3-1 SU, 3-1 ATS) knocked off the Suns 112-110 in Phoenix in their last outing, as Tim Duncan scored 25 points to go along with 17 boards.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, the NHL has a dozen games on its schedule for Saturday, with St. Louis at Boston, Chicago at Atlanta, Buffalo at Toronto, Minnesota at Columbus, Philadelphia at the Islanders, Ottawa at Montreal, Florida at Carolina, Dallas at Colorado, Pittsburgh at Phoenix, Detroit at Vancouver, Tampa Bay at San Jose, and Nashville at Los Angeles. The Predators fell to 5-3-3 on the season with a 4-3 loss in Phoenix on Wednesday night, the team's third straight defeat. Pekka Rinne gave up four goals on 28 shots between the pipes for Nashville in that game, while Francis Bouillon, Sergei Kostitsyn, and Patric Hornqvist provided markers. The Kings got some welcome news this week when star defenseman Drew Doughty (concussion) was cleared to return to the lineup.

South Carolina opened at -3 against Arkansas, but the line is now at -4.5.

UCLA was getting 6.5 points against Oregon State when the line opened, but it now sits at 4.5.

      Weather to watch

Nebraska at Iowa State: There is a 10 percent chance of rain and a 17 mph wind is expected.

Northwestern at Penn State: There is a 20 percent chance of rain.

      Who’s hot

The St. Louis Blues are 5-0 in their last five overall.

The Philadelphia Flyers are 5-0 in their last five overall.

The Boston Bruins are 7-1 in their last eight overall.

The New Orleans Hornets are 6-0 ATS in their last six overall.

The Miami Heat are 4-0 ATS in their last four overall.

The Utah Utes are 9-1-1 ATS in their last 11 overall.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers are 4-0 ATS in their last four road games.

      Who’s not

The New York Islanders are 0-6 in their last six overall.

The Phoenix Coyotes are 0-5 in their last five against the Eastern Conference.

The San Jose Sharks are 1-6 in their last seven against teams with winning records.

The Michigan Wolverines are 0-4 ATS in their last four overall.

The Boston College Eagles are 2-10 ATS in their last 12 overall and 2-8 ATS in their last 10 road games.

      Key stat

119.0, 217.3 – Passing yards per game and total yards per game allowed by TCU this season, which blows away the rest of college football in both categories. The Horned Frogs are going up against a Utah team that is scoring 45.3 points per game, third in the entire FBS. The Utes have eclipsed the 50-point mark four times.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Miami quarterback Jacory Harris has been ruled out of Saturday’s game against Maryland due to a concussion he sustained last week against Virginia. A source told the Associated Press on Friday that Harris needs at least two weeks to recover, which would also sideline him for next week’s visit to Georgia Tech. That’s bad news for the Hurricanes, who threw five interceptions in their loss to Virginia—four after Harris departed.

      Biggest games on the slate

      Alabama at LSU (6.5, 44)

      TCU at Utah (4.5, 51)

      Notable quotable

“Our passing game looks like we're throwing the football better in practice on a regular basis. The need is to translate that to the game. I'm pretty confident we'll be able to throw and catch it. I felt that way before. I suspect it will come to fruition Saturday.” – LSU coach Les Miles, whose team hosts Alabama on Saturday. Miles added that his two-man quarterback rotation will stay the same, with Jordan Jefferson starting and Jarrett Lee coming in for the third offensive series.

And then this gem from Limestone County (Alabama) Sheriff Mike Blakely on Election Day: “Alabama Coach Nick Saban running on the Democratic ticket could not have beaten a one-legged child molester running as a Republican.”

      Tips and notes

The Orlando Magic have been tinkering with lineup changes and the result was a brief shouting match between Mickael Pietrus and coach Stan Van Gundy on Wednesday night. Van Gundy said he would toy with bigger lineups (already with playoff matchups in mind) and he benched Pietrus in the fourth quarter of a blowout win over Minnesota. “MP was unhappy about when he went into the game and he was unhappy about me telling him to play defense,” Van Gundy said. “He didn't like what I was saying and I didn't like his response, so I took him out of the game.”

The Vancouver Canucks have won five in a row and they are 5-0-1 at home heading into Saturday’s showdown with Detroit. “We're not happy in here by any means," assured Henrik Sedin. “We still have to keep winning games and five in a row doesn't mean anything. Obviously, it's (only) 12 games into the season, it doesn't matter that we have won five. We are a confident group and are building confidence off those five wins in a row. But at the same time we need to keep building and getting better as a team.” Goalie Cory Schneider is 3-0 in his last three starts, the Canucks were 3-for-4 on the power play on Thursday, and their penalty-kill has been perfect for six straight games.

Arkansas has some issues at the receiver position heading into Saturday’s showdown at South Carolina. Leading receiver Greg Childs (46 catches, 659 yards, 6 TDs) is out for the season and Joe Adams (30, 544, 4) likely won’t be 100 percent due to an ankle injury even though he is expected to play. That means Jarius Wright (25, 425, 2) will have an increased role in the offense. The Razorbacks are second in the nation in passing offense at 360.3 yards per game and South Carolina ranks a dismal 105th in passing defense at 259.9 yards allowed per contest.

        Saturday's six-pack

Some pro football trends, with Week 9 rapidly approaching

-- Seattle's backup QB Charlie Whitehurst is in his 5th NFL season, but will start for first time Sunday against the Giants. He still hasn't thrown a pass in game that counted, appearing in three games.

-- Chicago-Buffalo game is at Rogers Centre in Toronto, the annual game for Bills to showcase the NFL for Canadian fans.

        -- Packers covered 10 of last 14 non-divisional games.

-- Chiefs covered seven of last nine as a road underdog.

-- Bengals covered one of their last five home games.

-- Dallas is 3-7 vs spread in non-divisional road games.

Saturday's List of 13: Random thoughts on a chilly fall night

        13) Watching the Lakers play early this season, they seem to have more urgency about them, almost like the Miami team is always in the back of their minds. In other years LA has seemed bored early on, but not so far this season.

        12) Lot of good stuff on NBA Full court; I enjoy watching Steve Nash play whenever possible, try to catch all the Warriors’ home games.

        11) We’ll find out Sunday if Seattle was justified trading 3rd-round pick to San Diego for backup QB Charlie Whitehurst, who never threw a pass in his first four NFL seasons, but gets the start this week against the Giants, who already knocked out five QB’s in their first seven games.

        10) Would be interesting to know how much help, if any, the weeknight ESPN games are to MAC/Sun Belt teams, in terms of recruiting. Middle Tennessee will never have a home game on ESPN on a Saturday, but when they play on a Tuesday or Wednesday, recruits can see them on their home field, in a winnable game. It has to help, at least a little.

        9) Giants’ GM Brian Sabean doesn’t get much time to celebrate the World Series win; he has to start building next year’s team, and like most teams, the Giants have some interesting questions to answer.

        8) All in all, there are 168 free agents out there, looking for a job/pay increase. Not all of them are going to get one.

        7) Connie Mack won 3,731 games as a manager, 968 more than anyone else in baseball history. Didn’t hurt that he owned the team he managed.

        6) Mike Quade, Ron Roenicke, John Farrell and Edwin Rodriguez all just got big league managing jobs, while Bobby Valentine/Joe Torre did not. Teams are cutting corners on manager/coaches’ salaries now.

        5) Starting QB’s in the Clemson-NC State football game tomorrow are both Colorado Rockies’ farmhands; Wolfpack’s Russell Wilson played 2B in the low minors this year. Kyle Parker was a high draft pick by Colorado and is expected to play minor league ball starting next summer.

        4) I’m baffled by the whole clock ahead/clock back thing. Why do we do this? Who likes it when it gets dark at 5:00?

        3) Underrated way to save money: throw your spare change into a bank every day. It adds up. Picked up $380 this week when my extra change was added up; that takes care of the cable bill most of the winter.

        2) Golfer YE Yang had a rough finish to his round in China Friday; hit tee shots on both 17 and 18 into the water, then hit another shot into the hazard on 18, but chipped out of there to save his par. Not good.

        1) Big weekend for CBS College Sports, which has the TCU-Utah game, biggest game on this week’s schedule. ESPN GameDay is broadcasting from Salt Lake Saturday morning, which will help promote the game.

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Denver Nuggets at Dallas Mavericks

The Nuggets and Mavericks just faced each other in Denver on Wednesday, with Dallas prevailing 102-101. Denver was without its three best big men in Nene, Kenyon Martin, and Chris "Birdman" Andersen.

Dirk Nowitzki exploited his opponents' lack of size by going for 35 points and 12 rebounds. The Mavericks did not exactly dominate on the boards, but they at least managed to win the rebounding battle 45-39.

Nene could return this weekend, but Martin and Andersen (both out with knee injuries) are not coming back until early January and early December, respectively.

Little-used forward Gary Forbes not only started, but guarded Nowitzki and racked up 23 minutes of playing time. "He's outworked some guys in practice," Denver coach George Karl said of Forbes. "We knew we had to play somebody some minutes that probably would be unorthodox. He's earned it by his hard work and his commitment to practice and getting better."

The Nuggets are 2-10-1 ATS in their last 13 road games. They also have though task of playing two games in two days, as the L.A. Clippers paid a visit to Denver on Friday. Dallas, by contrast, has been resting since its win over Denver on Wednesday.

              Pick: Mavericks

              Memphis Grizzlies at Sacramento Kings

The young Kings are off to a solid 3-2 start and are fourth in the NBA in scoring at 107 points per game.

A big reason is second-year guard Tyreke Evans, who is averaging more than 20 points and five assists in four games (he missed one due to suspension, stemming for a high-speed foray down the interstate). Evans tweaked his ankle against the Lakers on Wednesday, but coach Paul Westphal said on Thursday that his electric guard will be fine.

The Grizzlies are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 road games. They are approaching the end of a four-game road trip that featured back-to-back games on Tuesday and Wednesday against the Lakers and Warriors and now back-to-back games against the Suns (on Friday) and the Kings.

Sacramento has not played since its Wednesday loss to the Lakers.

              Pick: Kings

Hockey Night in Canada: NHL betting preview
                    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ottawa Senators at Montreal Canadiens (-116, 5.5)

These Northeast Division rivals collide in Montreal Saturday night. The Habs, who lead the division heading into Friday’s game in Buffalo, have won the last two meetings with the Sens but are just 3-7 in their last 10 contests with Ottawa.

                    Starting to make Sens

After a troubling start to the season, things are beginning to shape up in Canada’s capital. Ottawa has won back-to-back games and is 4-1 in its last five games. The Senators picked up win No. 6 on the year with a 4-1 victory over the New York Islanders at home Thursday night.

Star forward Jason Spezza, who missed time with a groin injury last week, collected four points against the Isles – scoring once and assisting on three other goals. Spezza has nine points in eight games and is sparking the Senators with his playmaking.

"It's nice to get on the board a little bit and tonight's the first night I felt really good skating-wise," Spezza told the CBC following Thursday’s win. "Usually when I skate well it's the strength of my game so I felt good tonight."

Spezza connected with defensemen David Hale and Sergei Gonchar for goals versus New York. Those talented two-way blueliners along with defenseman Erik Karlsson have also given Ottawa a scoring pop from the point this season. The Senators' defensive corps has totaled seven goals on the year, which is 21 percent of the team’s total scoring.

"We recognized we’re not shooting the puck enough," Gonchar, who is tied for second on the team in points, told reporters. "So having two guys shooting one-timers, it gives you more chances and more opportunities. It worked out well, so now we just have to make sure we’re doing it again and again."

                    Offense in need of re-Habs

Dropping back-to-back outings was enough for Canadiens coach Jacques Martin to shuffle his forward lines heading into Friday’s date with the Sabres.

Montreal has moved top scorer Andrei Kostitsyn on the wing with second-line forwards Scott Gomez and captain Brian Gionta, while placing Lars Eller with top-line forwards Tomas Plekanec and Michael Cammalleri.

The Habs are hoping these changes can jump start the offense, which has scored just once in the last two outings. Their most recent loss was a 3-0 shutout to the Columbus Blue Jackets in Ohio Tuesday.

“We made that change at the end of the last game and started to have some chances,” Gionta told the Montreal Gazette. “Obviously, losing two in a row and then being shut out ... you’re looking for a different spark and (Martin) did it by shuffling lines today.”

Detroit Red Wings at Vancouver Canucks (-145, 5.5)

The Canucks could be the hottest club in hockey, winning five straight games heading into this home stand with the Red Wings. Detroit is no slouch either, winning five of its last six games heading into Friday’s contest with the Edmonton Oilers.

Vancouver was 1-3 versus Detroit last season and owns a 4-6 mark against the Red Wings in their last 10 meetings.

                    Puck stops here

Canucks backers are learning to love backup goaltender Cory Schneider. With No. 1 Roberto Luongo on the bench, Schneider has stepped up his game.

He was stellar in Vancouver’s 3-1 road win against the Colorado Avalanche Thursday night, stopping 33 shots and just missing out on his first career shutout by less than four minutes. Even more impressive was the fact that this was Schneider’s first start in almost two weeks.

“At first you're a little rusty, but you feel the puck and you make that big save early and that helps boost your confidence,” he told the media about the long layoff. “But I've been working hard in practice and keeping my conditioning up.”

Goaltending has played a huge hand in the Canucks’ recent success. They have given up one or fewer goals in three of those five wins while getting solid work from Luongo and Schneider, who have helped make Vancouver the fourth-best defensive club in the NHL, allowing just 2.2 goals per game.

The Canucks have also got great production on special teams, ranking first on the power play (28.3 percent efficiency) and ninth on the penalty kill (86.4). They haven’t allowed a power-play goal during this winning run, blanking opposing special teams on 20 total chances.

“I don’t think we’ve changed anything specific in our penalty killing but I think our guys are making better reads and that permits them to be a little more assertive, whether on loose pucks or putting pressure,” head coach Alain Vigneault told reporters earlier this week. “Obviously, when you get the timely save at the right time you’re in good shape.”

                    Be like Mike

Many hockey fans cringed when long-time Dallas Stars forward Mike Modano pushed retirement off for another year and joined the Red Wings this summer.

Modano is still proving effective, scoring the tying goal in Detroit’s 2-1 victory over the Calgary Flames Wednesday night. It was just his second of the season but it gave new life to the Red Wings’ third line, which also got a goal from Justin Abdelkader in the win.

"Overdue," Modano told the media when asked about his line's production. "We've been playing better as a line, doing better things. We've been around the puck a little more and been more patient."

Detroit is struggling to get goals from all four lines this season. It is averaging 3.2 goals a night (third in the NHL) with most of the scoring coming from Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik Zetterberg and Johan Franzen, who have netted a collective 15 of the team’s 32 total goals (47 percent).

"It was a good win, we had four lines playing," coach Mike Babcock told the Detroit News following the win over the Flames. "Worked out well. We had the puck tonight, came in here with a plan to have the puck, and played hard. We were prepared for them."

                    Chicago Blackhawks at Atlanta Thrashers

It will be a reunion of sorts when the Blackhawks and the Thrashers go head-to-head for the first time this season. In one of the offseason's blockbuster trades, of course, the defending Stanley Cup champions sent Dustin Byfuglien, Andrew Ladd, Ben Eager, and Brent Sopel to Atlanta.

"It will be different to see them dressed up in their uniforms," Chicago forward Patrick Sharp said of his former teammates. "I've watched a lot of their games this year. They seem to be doing well and playing a lot of minutes and being effective."

The Thrashers as a whole are doing OK, but they have gone eight straight games giving up at least three goals.

That could be the recipe Conn Smythe Trophy winner Jonathan Toews (just three goals this season) needs to get back on track. "I feel like I'm one of those guys who is getting a lot of chances," he said. "It's always a good sign. But I'm just wondering when it's going to go in. I'm trying not to put any added pressure on myself."

                    Pick: Blackhawks

Minnesota Wild at Columbus Blue Jackets

The Blue Jackets are off to an impressive 8-4 start, tied for first with Detroit in the Central Division and tied for second in the entire Western Conference. They have won two in a row, five of their last six, and seven of their last nine.

Team play on the offensive end and stellar work in the net attribute to the hot streak. "We were really fresh, still moving and doing the right things (in the third period)," coach Scott Arniel said after a 3-0 road shutout of Atlanta on Thursday. "We played together as a group. It was little things: blocking shots, getting pucks out, knowing when to get them in. That was a solid 60 minutes."

Speaking of solid, Mathieu Garon has wrested the goalie job--at least for the moment--from Steve Mason. Garon is 4-0 this season, has two straight shutouts, has allowed only three goals in four games, and boasts a .966 save percentage.

One can only assume that Garon will be back in the net on Saturday. Mason certainly thinks so. "You don't want to sit on the bench," Mason explained. "But Matty deserves it. He's played great. He's given us a chance to win every night, and I'm happy for him."

                    Pick: Blue Jackets
