    Daily Sports Roundup: November 5

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Heat look to extend their winning streak in New Orleans, while the Devils host the rival Rangers, and Central Florida takes on Houston.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

College football has two games on tap for Friday, with Western Michigan at Central Michigan (-3.5), and Central Florida (-2.5) at Houston. The Knights (6-2 SU, 6-1 ATS) got past East Carolina 49-35 at home last time out, as Jeff Godfrey threw for 159 yards with a pair of touchdowns. Ronnie Weaver ran for 180 yards and two scores for Central Florida in that contest, and Latavius Murray rushed for three touchdowns. The Cougars (5-3 SU, 3-3-1 ATS) pummelled Memphis 56-17 on the road last game, with David Piland throwing for 292 yards and five touchdowns. Michael Hayes rushed for 123 yards and a score for Houston that day. Oddsmakers have the game's total set at 61.5 points.

As well, the Canadian Football League kicks off the final week of its regular season on Friday with Calgary at Winnipeg. The Stampeders (12-5 SU, 11-6 ATS) have locked down top spot in the West Division standings, and they're 3-point road favorites against the Blue Bombers (4-13 SU, 10-7 ATS). The total for the matchup is listed at 53.5 points.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA has a busy schedule of 12 games on Friday, with Cleveland at Philadelphia, New Jersey at Orlando, Milwaukee at Indiana, Charlotte at Detroit, Washington at New York, Chicago at Boston, Atlanta at Minnesota, Memphis at Phoenix, Utah at Golden State, the Clippers at Denver, Toronto at the Lakers, and Miami at New Orleans. The Heat (4-1 SU, 4-1 ATS) ran their winning streak to four games on Tuesday night, pounding the Timberwolves by a final score of 129-97 in Miami. Dwyane Wade led the way on offense with 26 points for the Heat in that victory, while LeBron James pitched in with 20 points and 12 assists. Chris Bosh had 13 points and six rebounds on that night.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

As well, the National Hockey League's Friday slate has eight games, with Boston at Washington, Montreal at Buffalo, Carolina at Florida, Calgary at Minnesota, Phoenix at Dallas, Detroit at Edmonton, Pittsburgh at Anaheim, and the Rangers at New Jersey. The Rangers and Devils have already met once this season, with New York pulling out a 3-1 home win back on October 24. Michal Rozsival, Ryan Callahan, and Brandon Dubinsky all scored for the Rangers in that victory, while Henrik Lundqvist made 27 saves. Ilya Kovalchuk provided the lone Devils marker, and Martin Brodeur made 31 stops. New Jersey star forward Zach Parise (knee) will be out of action for three months.

Bettors' best friend: Friday's wagering tips

      Line moves

Calgary Flames at Minnesota Wild: The hosts opened at -125 but that line has since shifted to -120 with many services.

Detroit Red Wings at Edmonton Oilers: The team from North of the Border opened at +144 but that line has since shrunk to +139 with most books.

Phoenix Coyotes at Dallas Stars: The team from Texas opened at minus-140 but that line has since bulged to minus-149.

      Who’s hot

New Jersey Nets have seen the over hit it in nine of their past 12.

Indiana Pacers are 10-3-1 ATS in their past 14 home games.

Toronto Raptors are 8-2 ATS in their past 10 road games.

Boston Bruins are 7-1 SU in their past eight overall.

Edmonton Oilers have seen the over hit in seven of their past eight games.

      Who’s not

Utah Jazz are 2-5 ATS in their past seven overall.

Atlanta Hawks are 2-7 ATS in their past nine games overall.

Los Angeles Clippers are 1-4 ATS in their past five overall.

Minnesota Wild are 1-8 in their past nine games following a win.

The Florida Panthers are 0-4 in their past four games following a win.

      Key stat

3 – Wins in three home games for the Golden State Warriors. It is the most consecutive home wins to start a season for the squad from California since the Run TMC boys – Tim Hardaway, Mitch Richmond and Chris Mullin – won six straight at Oracle Arena to start the 1990 season.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Things are going to be interesting in the front court of the Atlanta Hawks. Former lottery pick Marvin Williams. Suffering from a bone bruise on his right knee that will keep him out through at least Friday, the Hawks will miss a 51 percent shooter who is averaging nearly 11 points and six rebounds per game. His backup, Maurice Evans, also is expected to miss his fifth straight game with a knee injury. Even worse, guard Jamal Crawford, who is nursing a turf toe injury, is uncertain for the game against the Timberwolves tonight.

      Game of the day

Central Florida Knights at Houston Cougars (+1.5, 62)

      Notable quotable

"He's got all the power, and that may be part of the problem. There needs to be some type of separation of power, like our government. I don't think it should be based totally on what two or three people may say that are totally away from the game. It should be some of the players that are currently playing." – Steelers safety Troy Polamalu on Commissioner Roger Goodell.

      Notes and tips

Dorell Wright is…good? The league-leader in three-pointers is 18-of-33 from beyond the arc this season and is averaging 20.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game. The increased pace of the play in Golden State has been huge for the former member of the Miami Heat who floundered last season in playing in a slow-down offense on the East Coast. Switching time zones, he is averaging nearly four more points per game and getting easy looks in transition. He adds another dimension to the Warriors – a dimension that is leading to wins.

The Detroit Pistons are fighting like a CW teenie-bopper drama. Pistons coach John Kuester benched point guard Rodney Stuckey with more than nine minutes left in the third quarter of a tight game with the Atlanta Hawks. Stuckey responded by pouting on the bench and twice ignoring the coach’s calls for him to return to the action. Stuckey’s backup, Will Bynum is out with a hamstring injury. The Pistons, at 0-5, can’t do without Stuckey if they are to get a win and contend for a playoff spot.

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck has been ruled out of Sunday's game against the New York Giants with a concussion suffered in a 33-3 loss to Oakland last week that saw the signal caller get sacked eight times. Former Clemons star Charlie Whitehurst, who has yet to attempt a pass in his NFL career, will get the start in his place.

        Friday's six-pack

Some college football trends, with Week 9 rapidly approaching

-- Marshall is 6-14 vs spread in last 20 November road games.

-- Road team is 10-4 vs spread in Arizona-Stanford series.

-- Favorite covered seven of last nine Wisconsin-Purdue games.

-- Minnesota covered seven of last nine vs Michigan State.

-- Cal Bears are 3-10 vs spread as Pac-10 road favorite.

-- Road team is 10-2-2 vs spread in Alabama-LSU series.

        *************************************

Friday's List of 13: Things I'm looking for this weekend..........

        13) Vikings should beat QB-less Arizona (starting Derek Anderson) this week, but how are players reacting to Moss getting released, after Favre has gotten every break in the book from the same coach? Bad situation.

        12) Big week for my friend Joe Jordan, whose Giants won World Series Monday. Joe Paterno is also going for his 400th win Saturday against Northwestern. Guess that means a big fantasy week for Matt Rodgers, since he is the QB on Joe's fantasy team.

        11) Chargers are 0-4 on road, despite being favored in all four games; they’ve had five punts blocked in eight games, which has to be some kind of an NFL record. San Diego is favored on the road again, playing Houston team that is on short work week after their 9th straight loss to the Colts in Indianapolis.

        10) Timberwolves just made Florida swing, and trailed two games at half by 28-33 points. This is an epically bad team, maybe the worst of all-time, especially if Michael Beasley is out for long. 76ers’ all-time worst record of 9-73 could be in danger.

        9) Baylor at Oklahoma State—Two pleasant surprises in Big 12. First team to 40 wins. Baylor beat Texas last week for first time in 13 years.

        8) Dolphins are 4-0 on the road, 0-3 at home, but visit Baltimore team that’s covered last five games as post-bye favorite, so going to be tough for Miami to get that fifth road win this week.

        7) Nick Saban was once revered at LSU; now? Not so much. He makes his second trip back to Baton Rouge this week. You know it’s a big conference game when both teams had the Saturday before this game off.

        6) Will Shawne Merriman torment Jay Cutler in his Buffalo debut? If Bills play as well this week as they did in losing OT games on road the last two Sundays, they’ll beat Chicago at home.

        5) Michigan Wolverines need a win to complete a good week for Rich Rodriguez, who got off the hook with the NCAA this week. Michigan’s lost last three games, so he’s not off the hook with Big Blue’s fans yet, and beating Illinois won’t be easy.

        4) Banged-up Colts head to Philly after Monday night divisional home revenge win; tough spot for them, especially if Michael Vick is healthy and running all over the Linc.

        3) South Carolina needs to beat explosive Arkansas if its going to have good shot at winning SEC East. Hogs scored 74 points in splitting pair of earlier road games.

        2) Chiefs-Raiders is a big game for first time in long time; there was a time when this was THE GAME in the AFC, no matter when it was played. Chargers are rooting for Oakland to pull the Chiefs back closer to the pack in the AFC West.

        1) Winner of the TCU-Utah game becomes the #1 BCS-buster for this year. Interesting game; lot of buzz about TCU being interested in going to the Big East for football only. Wouldn’t Big 12 for all sports be a better fit, with Houston or Tulsa, than going to the Big East?

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New Jersey Nets at Orlando Magic (-16, 196.5)

The Orlando Magic aren’t the best team in the NBA. They lost in the Finals two years ago to the Lakers, couldn’t get past the Celtics in the East finals last season and they were waxed by the new-look Heat in Miami’s home opener.

But one thing Dwight Howard and his mates excel at is beating the crap out of bad teams. The Magic are 2-0 against the spread as double-digit favorites this year, building on their 17-8 mark from a season ago.

Yes, coach Stan Van Gundy likes it when his fellas run up the score on the opposition. Orlando beat the Timberwolves by 42 points and the Wizards by 29.
The Nets’ best offensive weapon is Brook Lopez but he won’t find as much breathing room down low with Howard in his grill. New Jersey won’t be able to score enough points to keep this thing from getting out of hand.

                Pick: Magic

Charlotte Bobcats at Detroit Pistons (-1.5, 184.5)

Sports Illustrated reported only 11 fans showed up for a Pistons season ticket give-away contest. The hook was that the fan had to attend every one of the team’s 41 home games. That might be more of a punishment than a reward, the way the Pistons are playing.

Detroit coach John Kuester wants Taysaun Prince to step up and be more of a leader and Prince wants Kuester to step up and be a better coach.

“There’s no question, we need more from all of us,” Kuester told the Detroit News after the Pistons dropped to 0-5 on the campaign. “This is a collective thing, it’s not pointing fingers. We’re all in this together.”

This team has no set rotation and no organization or identity. The Bobcats are much better but at least you know what you’re going to get out of them: effort and defense. That’s more than what the Pistons can say these days.

                Pick: Pistons
