    Daily Sports Roundup: November 2

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: Middle Tennessee meets Arkansas State on the gridiron, while the Blue Jackets host the Habs, and the T-Wolves take the court in Miami.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

The lone college football matchup for Tuesday is a Sun Belt matchup featuring Middle Tennessee (3-4 SU, 2-4 ATS) at Arkansas State (3-5 SU, 6-2 ATS). The Blue Raiders thumped Louisiana-Monroe 38-10 at home last time out, as Dwight Dasher threw for 219 yards and two touchdowns (along with one interception). Phillip Tanner ran for 73 yards and a score for Middle Tennessee in that win. The Red Wolves are coming off a 37-16 home win over Florida Atlantic, putting up 28 points in the fourth quarter in that comeback victory. Ryan Aplin threw for 230 yards and one TD for Arkansas State that day. Oddsmakers have Middle Tennessee pegged as the 1.5-point favorite for Tuesday.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA offers up seven games for Tuesday, with Atlanta at Cleveland, Philadelphia at Washington, Boston at Detroit, Orlando at New York, Portland at Milwaukee, Memphis at the Lakers, and Minnesota at Miami. The Timberwolves (1-2 SU, 1-2 ATS) were pounded 109-89 in Memphis in their last game, with Wayne Ellington scoring a team-high 15 points. Kevin Love picked up 14 points and 13 rebounds in that contest. The Heat (3-1 SU, 3-1 ATS) beat the Nets 101-78 in New Jersey on Sunday for their third straight win. LeBron James scored 20 points for Miami in that contest to go along with seven rebounds and seven assists. Chris Bosh was good for 18 points in that matchup.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are four games on the National Hockey League schedule for Tuesday, with Ottawa at Toronto, San Jose at Minnesota, Vancouver at Edmonton, and Montreal at Columbus. The 7-3-1 Canadiens fell 3-1 at home to Florida in their last game on Saturday night, with Mathieu Darche providing the team's lone marker. Carey Price stopped 28 of the 31 Panthers shot in that contest, and sits with a 2.38 GAA and a .912 save percentage on the season. The 6-4-0 Blue Jackets will be looking to bounce back from a 5-1 road loss to Colorado in their last game on Saturday, with starting netminder Steve Mason getting yanked after he surrendered four goals on just 19 Avalanche shots.

Bettors' best friend: Tuesday's wagering tips

      Lines to watch

Minnesota Timberwolves at Miami Heat – total has dropped from 193.5 at the open to 190.

The New York Knicks opened as 5.5-point underdogs at home to the Magic but now sit at +6.5.

      Weather to watch

Middle Tennessee St. at Arkansas State – 30 percent chance of rain with 14 mph winds out of the Northeast.

      Who’s hot

Middle Tennessee St. has covered in six of its last seven meetings with Arkansas State.

Washington Wizards have won three straight meetings with Philadelphia, covering in two of those games.

Miami Heat have won and covered three games in a row after dropping their opener. All four games played under the total.

Boston Celtics have covered in nine of their last 11 games in Detroit.

San Jose Sharks have won eight of their last nine games in Minnesota.

      Who’s not

Minnesota Timberwolves have covered in only seven of their last 26 games dating back to last season.

The New York Knicks have covered in six of their last 19 games against the Orlando Magic.

Ottawa Senators have dropped five straight against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

      Key stat

122 minutes and 24 seconds – amount of game time the Toronto Maple Leafs have been held without a goal. Toronto has been shut out against the Bruins and Rangers and have only one win in their last six games, five of which played under the total. The Leafs have managed three goals only once over that stretch.

      Injuries that shouldn’t be overlooked

Shaquille O’Neal, Jermaine O’Neal, Boston Celtics – Shaq, who has missed the last two practices with a knee bruise, made the trip with the team to Detroit, but isn’t expected to play Tuesday against the Pistons. Jermaine O’Neal, also battling a sore knee lately, should be fit to fill in for Shaq at center after participating fully in Boston’s last two practices.

      Game of the day

Middle Tennessee St. at Arkansas State (1.5, 58.5)

      Notable quotable

“We lost seven starters from last year’s defense, three who are in the NFL now, and we played four of the top offenses in the country. Statistically, I don’t know if the improvement has shown up, but we’ve played a lot of new guys in a lot of new positions and you can see the improvement we’ve made.” - Arkansas State coach Steve Roberts on his defense heading into Tuesday's game with Middle Tennessee.

      Notes and tips

The Minnesota Timberwolves may be shuffling their starting lineup already. Wolves beat writer Jerry Zgoda says Darko Milicic could be benched for Tuesday’s game against Miami. Milicic is averaging 4.7 points and 5.3 rebounds this year while Minnesota is off to a 1-2 SU, ATS start. Kevin Love is expected to take his spot in the starting lineup. The Timberwolves opened as 17-point underdogs against Miami but are now at +16.

The Detroit Pistons may have as few as nine players available for Tuesday’s game against the Celtics. Richard Hamilton (foot) and Charlie Villanueva (ankle) were both hurt in Saturday’s loss to the Bulls. Villanueva is a game-time decision and Hamilton is questionable. Meanwhile, Will Bynum is out and Chris Wilcox is doubtful as they both battle hamstring ailments.

The Toronto Maple Leafs drastically changed their lines in Sunday’s practice after being shutout in two straight games. Rookie Luca Caputi will likely play with top scorer Phil Kessel and centre Tyler Bozak on the first line Tuesday against Ottawa, while Mikhail Grabovski and Nikolai Kulemin will play with Clarke MacArthur on the left wing. Mike Brown was also promoted from the fourth line to form a brand new unit with Kris Versteeg and Tim Brent.

        Tuesday's six-pack

-- Whatever the Colts pay Peyton Manning, he earns it. Not so sure about their offensive coordinator, who probably does less on game day than any offensive coordinator in the NFL.

-- Lucas Oil Stadium is 60th stadium to host Monday Night Football.

-- Fourth game of the season, and Baron Davis already missed with an injured knee. Why would anyone sign this guy?

-- Congrats to my friends Big Dawg and jkj11, lifelong SF Giant fans.

-- FOX executives can't be real happy with a lackluster World Series that ended in five uninteresting games.

-- Vikings cut Randy Moss; interesting to see if anyone else will get suckered into signing him. No way I want him on my team.

Tuesday's List of 13: Our NFL List of 13:

        13) Texans-- Not the best nights for state of Texas; Houston is now 0-9 in Indianapolis, 2-16 overall against the Colts.

        12) Chiefs—Big game in Oakland Sunday. Just like the old days.

        11) Eagles—Play Colts/Giants in primetime the next two weeks.

        10) Titans—I’m guessing there’s a lot more than we know going on behind the scenes with Vince Young. As in, you play in the NFL with a sprained ankle, or at least you try.

        9) Colts-- Road game on short work week after a divisional revenge win at home, perfect spot for Eagles to hand Indy a loss this Sunday night.

        8) Falcons—Hope they come off their bye better than the Jets did.

        7) Jets—They’ve allowed 10-9 points in their two losses; how long before Rex punches Brian Schottenheimer on the sidelines?

        6) Packers—Does anyone doubt that getting rid of Favre was the right move now?

        5) Saints— Heavy is the head that wears the crown. They looked good Sunday night, playing with some desperation.

        4) Patriots—Game at Cleveland this week reminds us that Belichick’s career coaching record in games not started by Tom Brady is under .500.

        3) Ravens—Wonder if they still think Marc Bulger is better than Troy Smith?

        2) Steelers—Will Big Ben be fresher down stretch because his season has been shorter? I'm not saying yes, just asking.

        1) Giants— Whats so great about the NFC East? The other three teams all have QB issues. If Giant backup QB Sage Rosenfels was on either the Cowboys or Redskins, he'd be starting for them.

Orlando Magic at New York Knicks [ESPN | 7:35 PM ET]

MAGIC: (-6.5, O/U 201) The Magic come in to Tuesday’s game with three days of rest under their belt. Orlando has won 8 of their last 13 games when getting 3 days of rest or more. So far this year, Orlando has played well defensively, giving up just 89.5 points per game. However, they’ve struggled to find much chemistry on the offensive end. Orlando won, SU and ATS, in all three games against the Knicks last season. All three of those games went over the total. Aside from Dwight Howard, who leads the team in points, steals, rebounds, and blocks, the Magic come limping in without much confidence from their 26-point loss to Miami in their last game. In order for Orlando to beat the Knicks, they’ll have to receive contributions from role players that were among the best in the NBA last season.

Orlando is 6-1 SU in its last 7 games when playing New York.
The total has gone UNDER in 5 of Orlando's last 6 games on the road.

Key Injuries - Daniel Orton (Knee) is out indefinitely.

Projected Score: 105 (Side Play of The Day)

Knicks: The Knicks come into Tuesday’s game having lost two of their three contests to start the season. However, each of those three games has been decided by five points or fewer. The addition of Amare Stoudemire during the offseason was highly publicized, and Amare hasn’t disappointed offering up 21.3 point and 7.7 rebounds per game thus far. In order for New York to gain some revenge off of last year’s losses (3) to Orlando, they’ll have to find some production from three-point range. So far this season, New York is just 29% from beyond the arc, and just 68% from the free throw stripe.

New York is 3-7 ATS in its last 10 games when playing at home against Orlando.
The total has gone UNDER in 6 of New York's last 9 games at home

Key Injuries - Kelenna Azubuike (Knee) is out indefinitely.

                Projected Score: 96

Minnesota Timberwolves at Miami Heat (-16, 192)

When LeBron James finally unveiled The Decision and he and Chris Bosh joined Dwyane Wade in Miami, everybody was thinking about no-look passes and 360 dunks. Not defense.

But Miami heads into its fifth game of the year having played under the total in each of their first four games, holding the club’s opposition to 80.8 points per game on 38.9 percent shooting from the floor.

"Right now the most important thing is the guys understand, one, our identity is the defensive side of the floor," Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra said. "Secondly, get to know each other what we're trying to do offensively. That will take some time."

Minnesota isn’t what you’d consider an offensive juggernaut. The Timberwolves have been held under 80 points in two of their three games this season.

This game opened with Miami favored by 17 with the total at 193.5, but both have come down since.

                Pick: Under

Philadelphia 76ers at Washington Wizards (N/A)

This is a head-to-head matchup of No. 1 and No. 2 overall draft picks John Wall and Evan Turner, both of whom are being counted on to their respective franchises on the right track.

Wall has started both games this year and is playing 38.5 minutes per game while Turner is coming off the bench playing close to 28 minutes a game. Wall scored 28 points and had 10 of those in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s 99-95 loss to Atlanta as 9-point underdogs.

"He's worked a lot on his shot and it paid off," coach Flip Saunders told reporters. "He made a couple shots and got his confidence going. He had overall a pretty nice floor game and made a lot of improvements from Game 1 [when he shot 6 of 19 from the floor]."

Expect some points on the board in this one. Washington is allowing 105.5 points per night while Philadelphia checks in at 100 per game.

                Pick: Over

Vancouver Canucks at Edmonton Oilers (135, 5.5)

The Vancouver Canucks are in serious need of a boost to get them going on the road. That’s what Alex Burrows’ return to the lineup should do for them Tuesday night.

Burrows had major shoulder surgery in the offseason after leading the Canucks with 35 goals, despite reporting problems with the shoulder as early as last February.

“It's been a long time since I played a game [May 11] so obviously I'm really looking forward to it,” Burrows told reporters Monday. “I haven't been involved in any kind of game or scrimmage, or that kind of stuff, in a long time. It will be pretty nice to get back in the lineup and try to help the team win.”

The Canucks head into Tuesday’s game 0-3-1 away from the Rogers Arena and have been outscored 15-7 on the road so Burrows’ addition to the lineup will be welcomed. However, there still isn’t any word as to who he’ll be skating with, though you couldn’t rule out him sliding alongside the Sedin twins where he did most of his damage over the last two years.

                        Pick: Canucks

San Jose Sharks at Minnesota Wild (120, 5.5)

The Minnesota Wild are still livid about a hit Los Angeles Kings forward Dustin Brown delivered on Antti Miettinen last Monday. Brown was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct, but the league decided not to discipline him further. Meanwhile, Miettinen hasn’t played since while he deals with a concussion symptoms.

The Wild could use him too. He had 20 goals and 60 points last season and had two goals and four assists in eight games leading up to the hit.

Minnesota may also be without forward Guillaume Latendresse and defenseman Cam Barker. Both have groin injuries and are listed as questionable. Latendresse has missed the last two games while Barker has sat out three straight.

                        Pick: Sharks
