        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New Jersey Devils at Vancouver Canucks (-160, 5.5)

The New Jersey Devils just can’t catch a break right now.

Already mired in a slump that has seen the club lose six of its last eight games, the club now heads into Monday’s matchup in Vancouver while their sniper Zach Parise undergoes tests back in New Jersey on what is rumored to be a knee injury that he picked up during Saturday’s 3-1 loss to the Los Angeles Kings. Parise, who led the team with 38 goals last season, didn’t come out for the third period.

That’s terrible news for a New Jersey club that’s averaging only 1.7 goals a game with a league-worst power play that is converting on only 7.7 percent of its chances this season.

In this situation, you’d hope that Ilya Kovalchuk would step up to shoulder the scoring load, but he has only one point in his last six games and was benched last week for being late for a team meeting.

"Who cares how many shots we put on net?" Kovalchuk said after the Devils fired 39 shots at Los Angeles’ Jonathan Quick. "It's only one goal, and you're not going to win a lot of games with one goal. We have to find a way to be better. It's a five-man unit. The way the 'Ds' helped us in the third period, I think that made a big difference. We created a lot of chances and we played almost all 20 minutes in their zone."

New Jersey has just two wins in its last eight meetings with the Canucks.

        Pick: Canucks

Chicago Blackhawks at New York Rangers (-120, 5.5)

With Chris Drury, Marian Gaborik on the shelf with injuries, the New York Rangers were probably just hoping to keep their heads above water until the injury bug let up.

That’s exactly what they’ve managed to do going 4-3 since Drury and Gaborik went on the shelf.

Rangers coach John Tortorella has been juggling most of his lines on a weekly basis, but one constant that has remained is his top line of Artem Anisimov, Brandon Dubinsky, and Ryan Callahan.

Callahan scored New York’s second goal on a penalty shot in Saturday’s 2-0 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs and now leads the club with 11 points in 10 games while riding a six-game points streak. Dubinsky is second in team scoring with five goals and nine points, while Anisimov checks in third with seven points.

“They continue to be our best and most consistent line night after night,” Rangers head coach John Tortorella told reporters after Friday’s 4-3 loss to the Hurricanes. “I liked a lot of what I saw from our team. There are things we have to fix, but there are a lot of good things there.”

        Pick: Over

        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pucking the trends: Weekly NHL betting notes
        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        Hot Team: Philadelphia Flyers

Flyers coach Peter Laviolette is nothing, if not motivational. After all, despite winning a Stanley Cup as the coach in Carolina, Laviolette's best career coaching performance may just be him leading the Flyers out of a daunting 0-3 hole vs. the Bruins last year in the second round of the playoffs.

You know the story, of course. Laviolette lit a fire under his club, they won four straight vs. the Bruins, and two weeks later, they found themselves in the Stanley Cup Finals ... as a No. 7 seed out of the Eastern Conference. Not bad for the resume.

Well, he's at it again. After a lackluster 2-1 loss at Columbus last Monday, he laid into his troops. They may not be a great team this year, but they are certainly better than one that had lost four out of five games, concluding with the defeat to the Blue Jackets. And he knew it.

The result of the tirade? Three straight wins in which they combined for 15 goals. What's more impressive is that they pulled off the rare back-to-back sweep, defeating the Penguins and Islanders for four points in a span of 24 hours.

Surging Philadelphia plays four games in a span of seven days, starting Monday vs. Carolina.

        Cold Team: New York Islanders

One of the teams the Flyers disposed of was the shorthanded Islanders, who are starting to show signs of fatigue and inexperience.

The Islanders have lost four in a row now, and in the last two, they could not score more than one goal. They've been outscored, 9-2, in the last six periods. Not good.

They take to the road this week -- at Carolina and at Ottawa -- on back-to-back nights, Wednesday and Thursday. .

        Over Play: Nashville Predators

The surprising Predators have three games on the road this week -- at Phoenix, at Los Angeles, at Anaheim -- and you may be wise to look at their totals when they draw near.

After all, Nashville, in its last two road games, has seen a total of 14 goals -- for and against -- hit the nets. An average clip of seven goals -- for and against -- on the road is a recipe for an over at any point in the season, no matter who you are.

        Under Play: Carolina Hurricanes

The Hurricanes waited three weeks to have a home game, and they may want to wait even longer next time. After all, they cannot score in Raleigh, for some strange reason.

Granted, they played two quality teams at home, in Washington and Pittsburgh last week, but a pair of 3-0 shutout losses? Not a good opening, folks.

But for those who follow the trends, keep this in mind this week: The Hurricanes play host to the Islanders on Wednesday, and the Panthers on Saturday. Will they score a goal? Stay tuned. Until then, it’s under city.

        Surveying the schedule:

*** Look for the Flames to make the most of their home date vs. the Red Wings on Wednesday. After that game they embark on a four-game road trip that will not be easy: at Minnesota, Colorado, Phoenix and San Jose.

*** Continue to monitor the decline of the Devils. They have two more West Coast road games, after going just 1-3 on the trip so far. New Jersey plays at Vancouver on Monday and at Chicago on Wednesday. New Jersey has just three wins -- period -- all season.
