    Daily Sports Roundup: November 1

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The World Series stays in Texas for Game 5 of that set, while the unbeaten Blazers meet the Bulls, and the Texans and Colts battle on MNF.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

It's Houston at Indianapolis on Monday Night Football this week, with Peyton Manning and company looking to avenge their Week 1 loss to the Texans. The Colts (4-2 SU, 3-3 ATS) got past the Redskins 27-24 in Washington last time out, as Manning threw for 307 yards and two touchdowns. Joseph Addai (who will sit out on Monday night with a shoulder injury) ran for 128 yards and a score for Indianapolis in that contest. The Texans (4-2 SU, 2-3-1 ATS) beat Kansas City 35-31 at home in their most recent game, with Matt Schaub throwing for 305 yards and a pair of scores. Arian Foster also ran for two touchdowns for Houston in that win. The Colts are listed as 5.5-point home favorites for Monday night, with the total for the matchup at 51.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

San Francisco's Tim Lincecum (3-1, 2.79 ERA in the playoffs) takes on Texas' Cliff Lee (3-1, 2.51 ERA in the playoffs) in Game 5 of the World Series in Arlington on Monday night in a rematch of the set's opener. Righthander Lincecum picked up the win for the Giants in Game 1 despite surrendering four runs on eight hits over just 5 2-3 innings of work that day. Lincecum walked two and fanned three in the outing. Lefthander Lee was pounded by San Francisco's hitters in being tagged with the Game 1 loss, allowing seven runs (six earned) on eight hits over his 4 2-3 innings of work while fanning seven.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The NBA has three games on its schedule for Monday, with San Antonio at the Clippers, Toronto at Sacramento, and Portland at Chicago. The Trail Blazers (3-0 SU, 3-0 ATS) continued their unbeaten campaign with a 100-95 road win over the Knicks on Saturday night. Brandon Roy poured in a team-high 29 points for Portland in that contest, while LaMarcus Aldridge was good for 20 points and 10 rebounds. The Bulls (1-1 SU, 0-1-1 ATS) broke into the win column with a 101-91 home victory over the Pistons on Saturday. Derrick Rose exploded for a game-high 39 points for Chicago in that contest.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are three games on tap around the National Hockey League on Monday, with Chicago at the Rangers, Carolina at Philadelphia, and New Jersey at Vancouver. The 3-8-1 Devils continued to spiral in their last game on Saturday, falling 3-1 in Los Angeles and losing forward Zach Parise to a lower-body injury. Matt Taormina had the only goal for New Jersey in that contest, while Martin Brodeur stopped 20 of 23 Los Angeles shots. The 4-3-2 Canucks are coming off a 4-3 home win over Colorado, with Jeff Tambellini, Ryan Kesler, Peter Schaefer, and Mason Raymond (in overtime) providing the markers. Roberto Luongo made 36 saves for the Canucks in that victory.

Bettors' best friend: Monday's wagering tips

      Lines to watch

Sacramento Kings opened as 2.5-point favorites against Toronto and are now listed at -4.

      Who’s hot

Portland Blazers are 3-0 straight up to start the year with all three games playing under the total.

San Antonio Spurs are 8-0 ATS in their last eight meetings with the Los Angeles Clippers.

The Philadelphia Flyers have won three straight scoring six goals on the power play during the streak.

      Who’s not

The New Jersey Devils have won two of their last eight meetings with the Vancouver Canucks.

Carolina Hurricanes have won only seven of their last 35 games against the Flyers.

      Key stat

5 – The number of teams that have come back from a 3-1 series deficit to win the World Series. The last team to accomplish the feat was the Kansas City Royals in 1985.

      Injury that shouldn't be overlooked

Brian Campbell, Chicago Blackhawks – Campbell has been skating for the past few days and could return to the lineup Monday against the Vancouver Canucks. Campbell has been out of the lineup since spraining his knee during the preseason and would be a big help to Duncan Keith, who has been logging a lot of minutes without Campbell in the lineup. Chicago plans to see how Campbell does in Monday’s morning skate before making an official announcement.

      Game of the day

San Francisco Giants at Texas Rangers

      Notable quotable

"I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to stick to the script that got them the win the first game. We just want to play better than we did last time. We're going to start by stopping the run, rallying to the ball, then forcing a team to throw, then that's when we're at our best.'' – Indianapolis cornerback Kelvin Hayden told reporters about what he expects from the Houston Texans Monday night.

      Tips and notes

Philadelphia Flyers forward Daniel Briere has a 10 a.m. conference call with the league on Monday after he was assessed a five-minute major and a 10-minute misconduct for cross-checking Frans Nielsen near the end of Saturday’s 6-1 win over the Islanders. If suspended he could miss Monday’s game against the Hurricanes.

Adam Vinatieri will handle kickoffs Monday night for the Indianapolis Colts with punter/kickoff specialist Pat McAfee suspended after he was booked for a public intoxication charge during the team’s bye week. Vinatieri hasn’t been used in kickoff situations in a full year, when McAfee joined the club.

Eric Bledsoe is going to see more time in a backup role for the Los Angeles Clippers with Randy Foye out with a sprained right hamstring. Foye missed Sunday's game against Dallas and Bledsoe stepped in to back up starter Baron Davis with six points, three rebounds, two assists, one steal and four turnovers in 16 minutes of work. The club is currently saying Foye's day-to-day, but coach Vinny Del Negro said Foye could be out a "week or two." Foye is scheduled to be re-evaluated Monday. Los Angeles will be busy over the next while, playing five games in seven days.

        Monday's six-pack

-- Lee Westwood is now officially the world's #1-ranked golfer, under the goofy sliding system they use.

-- Golfer Ryuji Imada was penalized total of 26 strokes Sunday, since he didn't know the local rules for replacing the ball under lift, clean and place. Rules in Asia are different for lift, clean and place than they are in the rest of the world. Imada's 71 became a 97. Yikes.

-- You read about the West-Wafer fight in a Celtics' practice and you realize coaching in the NBA can be like running an insane asylum.

-- Four NBA games Sunday, decided by average of 21 points, with none decided by less than 16 points. They keep letting star players put together their own teams, they're going to get more of this.

-- NCAA did smart thing this week and opted not to eliminate summer recruiting in college basketball. Would've been a big mistake.

-- A week from tonight real college basketball games start. Not a day too soon. Should be a fun season.

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday..........

        13) I'm beating a dead horse here, but if I owned the Vikings, everyone would get fired-- GM, coach, anyone who enabled this ridiculous Favre situation to take place. Guy is washed up, he's a standing target to just get pounded so badly even his wife will feel bad for him, yet no one has the onions to tell him he's finished. Totally unbelievable.

        12) Denver Broncos are now 4-14 in their last 18 games after they lost to the 49ers 24-16 in London. Denver ran a punt back for what appeared to be the tying TD in the last 2:00, but it was called back by a penalty.

        11) Dallas ran the ball 22 times for 50 yards Sunday, in a horrific home loss to the Jaguars. Does Jerry Jones have someone to tell him that if he doesn't fix his offensive line, his nice new stadium will be half-empty?

        10) Washington had the ball and a 25-20 lead at Detroit with 4:40 left, but somehow lost by 12 points; in the meantime, Donovan McNabb got benched after throwing the pivotal INT, so now there is chaos again in nation's capitol. No one is quite sure why McNabb got benched. .

        9) All in all, a good day for the Giants/Eagles, who had this week off.

        8) Cool thing about football; teams sign guys off the scrap heap like the Redskins' Brandon Banks or Detroit's Stefan Logan and they become difference makers on special teams. Both are terrific return guys.

        7) It aggravates me to see Darren O'Day get lit up by the Giants, since he threw nine scoreless innings against my A's this year. Would be nice if Ron Washington would stop using him, since he's been useless against San Francisco, but thats probably asking for too much.

        6) How did the Cardinals get left hanging without a quarterback? There are very few NFL QBs I have less faith in when the 2:00 drill is on than Derek Anderson. He just radiates a lack of self-confidence.

        5) Raiders are getting better; they crushed Seattle Sunday, outgaining the Seahawks 545-162. Oakland had eight sacks, averaged 10.6 yards every time they tried to pass. Still only had one red zone TD in four tries.

        4) Jets allowed 10-9 points in their two losses.

        3) Have to feel for Buffalo fans; Bills went on road last two weeks and played their butts off, not only to lose, but to lose in dying seconds of OT. They're going to upset someone very soon. Buffalo was 11-23 on 3rd down conversions Sunday; can't remember a team having 23 plays on third down in one game before.

        2) If the playoffs started Monday morning, playoff teams would be:
        AFC: Jets-Ravens-Texans-Chiefs-Patriots-Steelers
        NFC: Giants-Packers-Falcons-Seattle-Bucs-Saints

        1) Not to get too excited, but if the Giants win in Seattle Sunday, the Rams will be in first place (via tiebreaker) with eight games left. I'm just saying, after being 6-42 the last three years, this is a lot better.

Cliff Lee, Texas Rangers vs. Tim Lincecum, San Francisco Giants

                Cliff Lee (12-9, 3.18 ERA)

So, Cliff Lee is human after all. Now we get to see whether he can bounce back after his first playoff loss as he takes the hill in Game 5 against the San Francisco Giants.

He went into Game 1 with spectacular postseason numbers. Lee was 7-0 with a 1.26 ERA in eight previous postseason appearances, but then allowed seven runs (six earned) and eight hits over 4 2/3 innings in the 11-7 loss.

However, Lee isn’t a guy that rattles easily and took the beating in stride saying that location was his biggest issue. The Giants jumped on him early in the count all night and made him throw 32 pitches in the two-run third inning. Manager Ron Washington said that inning played a factor as Lee may have tired early before San Francisco put six runs on the board in the fifth.

“I get a chance to redeem myself against the team that actually put it to me pretty good last time,” Lee told reporters Sunday. “You know, I'm looking forward to it. I've been working hard and ready for it's basically the last start of the season for me, and I want to do everything I can to help this team win the World Series.”

                Tim Lincecum (16-10, 3.43 ERA)

Now that Lincecum has his World Series jitters out of the way, it’s scary to think how good he might be in Game 5.

The right-hander admitted feeling a bit uneasy before Game 1’s start, but pitched well enough to help the Giants to a 11-7 victory. Lincecum went 5 2/3 innings allowing eight hits and four earned runs to outlast Cliff Lee. He struck out only three, which was his lowest punch-out total since he also struck out three back on Sept. 19 against the Milwaukee Brewers.

The experience of being there is the big help," Lincecum told reporters Sunday. "Going through the lineup again knowing that you're pitching in another World Series game just eases the tension."

This time around he’s looking to paint the corners a bit better after saying that he left too many hittable pitches in the strike zone during Game 1.

"I just want to be more aggressive, of course," Lincecum added. "Quality of strikes as opposed to just throwing strikes."

Lincecum is now 3-1 in postseason play, posting a 2.79 ERA and 33 strikeouts to seven walks.

                This Day in Baseball
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On November 1 in Baseball History...

1914 - Connie Mack begins cleaning house, asking waivers on Jack Coombs, Eddie Plank, and Chief Bender. Colby Jack goes to the Dodgers. Plank and Bender escape Mack's maneuvering by jumping to the Federal League. Despite the pennant, Philadelphia fans did not support the A's and the club lost $50,000.

1938 - National League batting champ Ernie Lombardi is named the Most Valuable Player by the Baseball Writers. Chicago pitcher Bill Lee is runner-up.

1942 - Larry MacPhail enters the Army. The Dodgers look to St. Louis for leadership. After two decades in St. Louis, Branch Rickey splits with owner Sam Breadon. He will sign to become General Manager at Brooklyn.

1946 - The right foot of Cleveland owner Bill Veeck is amputated, a result of a war injury in the South Pacific two years before. Veeck has had a tremendous impact on promotion in a half season of ownership. A minor but typical change is the regular posting of National League scores on the Cleveland scoreboard, a departure from the long-standing practice of both leagues.

1951 - The National League votes Brooklyn catcher Roy Campanella the league's Most Valuable Player for what will be the first of three such awards.

1960 - Baltimore shortstop Ron Hansen is voted American League Rookie of the Year, getting twenty-two of twenty-four votes. The other votes go to teammates Chuck Estrada and Jim Gentile.

1966 - Sandy Koufax becomes the first three-time winner of the Cy Young Award. He is a unanimous winner for the second-straight year. This is the last year that only one award is given for pitchers in both of the major leagues.

1968 - Thirty-game winner Denny McLain is the unanimous American League winner of the Cy Young Award.

1978 - Ron Guidry is the unanimous choice for the American League Cy Young Award. The Yankees southpaw led the league in wins, winning percentage, shutouts, and ERA.

1979 - Edward Bennett Williams buys the Orioles from Jerold Hoffberger for a reported $12.3 million.

1982 - At a meeting in Chicago, the major league owners vote not to renew Commissioner Bowie Kuhn's contract. The American League owners voted in favor of Kuhn 11-3, the National League 7-5. But his eighteen votes left him two shy of the three-fourths majority required for reelection. Kuhn will remain on the job until a successor is found.

1988 - Chris Sabo, who hit .271 with eleven home runs and forty-six stolen bases as the Reds third baseman, wins the National League Rookie of the Year award. Chicago's Mark Grace is runner-up.

Portland Trailblazers at Chicago Bulls [WGN | 8:00 PM ET]

TRAILBLAZERS: Portland is tied for the best record in the Western Conference at 3-0 SU. The Blazers have yet to lose a game ATS this year, as they are 2-0-1 ATS. Portland is playing well on the road, as they've yet to play a game at home yet this season. The Blazers played the Bulls tough last year, winning 1 game and going to OT in the other meeting. All 5 starters are averaging double figures in scoring this year, led by G Brandon Roy. Roy is averaging 25 PPG to start the season. F LaMarcus Aldridge is averaging 15.7 PPG and a team high 9.7 RPG this year. F Nicolas Batum seems to be the most improved player on the Blazers roster, as he's been amazing both offensively and defensively this season. The Trail Blazers are 17-8-2 ATS in their last 27 road games overall. Portland is 2-6-1 ATS in their last 9 games following a SU win. The Trail Blazers are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games played on 1 days rest. Portland is 9-3-1 ATS in their last 13 games against the Eastern Conference.

Trailblazers 9-4 ATS last 13 games against the NBA Central.
Under is 7-0 last 7 games overall.

Key Injuries - C Greg Oden (knee) is out.

                          Projected Score: 90

BULLS: (-1.5, O/U 190) Chicago is off to a 1-1 star, both SU and ATS this season. The Bulls lost their season opener on the road at Oklahoma City before coming home and beating Detroit by double digits. Chicago is averaging 98 PPG this year, thanks to all world G Derrick Rose. Rose is averaging 33.5 PPG to start the season. Besides his scoring prowess, Rose is also averaging 5 RPG and 6.5 APG so far this year. C Joakim Noah is 2nd on the team in scoring, averaging 16.5 PPG while shooting better than .50% from the field. Noah has been unbelievable rebounding the ball this year, averaging an astounding 18 RPG this year. F Luol Deng is in a shooting slump to start the year, as he's shooting just 30% from the field to start the season. The Bulls are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games overall. Chicago is 25-11 ATS in their last 36 games following an ATS win. The Bulls are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games playing on 1 days rest.

Portland Trail Blazers at Chicago Bulls (-1.5, 189)

Michael who? Okay, so no player is ever going to make Bulls fans forget about Michael Jordan, but point guard Derrick Rose’s play has Chicago basketball fans pumped about the present and future instead reminiscing about the glory days.

Rose was unreal in the Bulls’ come-from-behind win over the Pistons, netting 39 points to go along with seven assists and six rebounds.

Chicago outscored Detroit 34-9 in the final frame thanks in large part to Rose’s unstoppable first step. The home crowd recognized Rose’s play with chants of “M-V-P”.

"This is what I work out for," Rose told Chicago Tribune following the game. "This is why I love this game. I want to be known as a winner and not just a regular player."

Rose’s offensive outburst shadows Chicago’s glaring weakness. There isn’t much firepower on the Bulls' roster besides Rose, at least not until power forward Carlos Boozer gets back. Chicago’s offense is non-existent if Rose isn’t creating easy shots for his teammates.

Look for a deeper Portland squad to expose the Bulls’ one-dimensional attack.

                          Pick: Blazers

Toronto Raptors at Sacramento Kings (-4, 209)

Sacramento is another team blessed with a rising star in its backcourt. Tyreke Evans returned from a one-game suspension and immediately reminded people why he was selected as last season’s Rookie of the Year.

Evans missed 14 of his 20 shots from the field Friday night against the Cavaliers but he blew by primary defends almost every time he touched the ball.

"(Evans) creates a lot of attention, and so much of what we run is designed to give him a chance to get to the basket and make plays for himself and others," Kings coach Paul Westphal told the Sacramento Bee before Friday’s contest.

Evans will be a headache for the Raptors, but Toronto will have the most trouble guarding post scorers like Carl Landry and DeMarcus Cousins.

                          Pick: Kings
