The St. Louis Rams will be welcoming the San Diego Chargers to their hometown for the second time this season. The Chargers beat the Rams 31-10 on August 22nd, which was a preseason game.
In San Diego’s last game they were thoroughly beaten by the New York Jets 44-13 at Qualcomm stadium. The Chargers surrendered 31 pts in the first half of the game to the Jets a team that had not scored more than 25 pts in any of its previous 6 games.
San Diego’s defense also allowed the Jets loser of 5 of their first 7 games to rush for 165 nets yards. San Diego had came into this game as having the third best rush defenses, but they just didn’t show up for this game as Jets running back Lamont Jordan accounted for 107 yards on 13 carries.
Offensively the Chargers played one of their worst games of the season too. They set season lows for plays (51), third down efficiency (11 percent), total net yards (243), net yards rushing (73), and time of possession (22 minutes 54 seconds).
Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson the NFL’s second leading rushing (845 yards and 9 td’s) only carried the ball 12 times for 60 yards as the Chargers were trying to play catch up the whole game to the Jets. Quarterback Drew Brees finished 22-of-35 for 192 yards and a touchdown, but he also had 2 interceptions.
The St. Louis Rams meanwhile opened their season at an astonishing 0-5 mark. Team Quarterback Kurt Warner broke his pinkie finger and the realms were given over to third string quarterback Marc Bulger over the course of the last 3 games. In those 3 games St. Louis has managed to go on a 3-0 winning spree. Bulger is completing 62.2 percent of his passes while throwing for 6 tds with 3 interceptions. Bulger a West Virginia college product also has a hefty 94.5 passing rating in the 3 games since Warner’s injury departure.
In the Rams last 3 games since quarterback Marc Bulger took over they have outscored their opponents 92-47. The Rams are 14-4 against AFC teams, which includes a 1-1 mark this year.
In the Rams last game they managed to beat the Arizona Cardinals 27-14. Rams running back Marshall Faulk managed to carry the ball 27 times for 178 yards and a touchdown despite having leg cramps from the flu. Marshall Faulk has now rushed for more than 150 yards in 3 straight games and needs to do it again against the Chargers to tie Hall of Fame running back Earl Campbell for accomplishing this feat in 4 straight games.
Quarterback Marc Bulger completed 20-29 passes for 245 yards and 2 touchdowns with 2 interceptions against the Cardinals.
Defensively the Rams held the Cardinals to only 14 pts and a total of 257 yards. The Rams defense which ranks as one of the best in NFL against the rush held the Cardinals to a measly 64 yards on 17 carries.
Chargers Keys Factors:
San Diego’s running back LaDainian Tomlinson who is second in the NFL in rushing yards needs to be able to get out of the gate early for the Chargers to have success against the Rams. Tomlinson will need to get the ball at least 20 carries this time around instead of a measly 12 times that he had last week against the Jets.
Chargers Wide receiver Curtis Conway (623 receiving yards 5 tds) will need to get open for quarterback Drew Brees, which will also help Tomlinson against the Rams rushing defense.
Defensive tackle Raylee Johnson who comes into this game leading the Chargers with 5.5 sacks will need to apply pressure to Rams quarterback Marc Bulger.
Rams Key Factors:
St. Louis running back Marshall Faulk who is 4th in the NFL in rushing yards with 780 and 10 touchdowns will need to get past the 100 yard mark against the Chargers in order for the Rams to win this game.
Wide receiver Tory Holt (620 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns) will need to get open for Quarterback Marc Bulger. Remember Bulger is a 3rd string quarterback that has never taken a professional NFL snap prior to 3 games ago. So veterans like Holt and Faulk will have to continue to step up as they have did the last 3 games to help out Bulger.
Defensive tackle Leonard Little who comes into this game with 7 sacks will need to apply pressure on Drew Brees.
Matchups:
Chargers offense averages 5.3 yards per play and 331.8 total yards per game
Rams defense gives up 5.5 yards per play and 316.2 total yards per game.

Chargers defense gives up 5.2 yards per play and 324.6 total yards per game.
Chargers offense averages 4.8 yards per carry and 150.6 total yards running per game.
Rams defense gives up 4.0 yards per carry and 93.8 total yards running per game.
Rams offense averages 4.7 yards per carry and 120.2 total yards running per game.
Chargers defense gives up 3.9 yards per carry and 89.5 total yards running per game.
Chargers offense averages 181.1 yards passing per game and completing 62.3% passes.
Rams defense gives up 222.5 yards passing per game and 65.6% completion rate.
Rams offense averages 246.1 yards passing per game and completing 65.1% passes.
Charges defense gives up 235.1 yards passing per game and 62.5% completion rate.
As you can see on paper these 2 teams look very identical in their respective numbers. However the Rams have been playing much better the past 3 games. The Chargers however, just got spanked last week.
My opinion on this game is to take the Chargers plus the 6 points, as I believe this game will be a close one. I personally think the Chargers were looking past the Jets last week and thinking that it would be a walk in the park victory. I also believe that the Chargers will be hungry this game and will bounce back with possibly winning this game straight up.
As for the total both teams combined are 10-6 ATS using a total of 44. Meanwhile the Chargers are 3-1 ATS on the road with a total of 44. The Rams are 2-2 ATS at home with a total of 44. My opinion on the total would be to take the under 44 pts.
