Bettors’ best friend: Sunday’s wagering tips

Lines to keep an eye on

The Chiefs opened as 9-point favorites against the Bills at some shops, but the line is down to -7.5.

The Bengals opened as 2.5-point favorites against the Dolphins, but the line is down to -1.

The Lions opened as 1-point favorites against the Redskins, but the line is up to -2.5.

The 49ers opened as 1-point underdogs against the Broncos, but they are now 1-point favorites.

The Pittsburgh-New Orleans line opened at even or with the Steelers as 1-point favorites, but now the Saints are 1-point favorites.

    Weather to watch

Giants at Rangers: Skies should be clear and a 13 mph wind is expected to blow in from right field toward the third base line.

Packers at Jets: Skies will be sunny but a 15 mph wind is expected.

Vikings at Patriots: There is just a 10 percent chance of rain and a 16 mph wind is expected.

Seahawks at Raiders: There is just a 10 percent chance of rain.

    Who’s hot

The Jets are 5-0 ATS in their last five overall.

The Bucs are 4-0 ATS in their last four road games.

The Chiefs are 7-1 ATS in their last eight overall.

The under is 6-1-1 in Golden State's last eight road games.

    Who’s not

The Saints are 1-5 ATS in their last six overall.

The Vikings are 1-6 ATS in their last seven home games.

The Seahawks are 2-10 ATS in their last 12 road games.

The Utah Jazz are 0-5 ATS in their last five overall.

    Key stat

176.5, 174.5 – Rushing yards per game for the Kansas City Chiefs this year and rushing yards per game allowed by the Buffalo Bills this year, respectively. Kansas City's total is good for No. 1 in the NFL, more than 17 yards ahead of the New York Jets. At the other end of the spectrum, Buffalo's mark puts the team at dead last in the league in defending the run. In fact, the Bills are so bad defending the run that they are giving up almost 17 yards more per game than 31st-ranked Tampa Bay.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Stephen Curry, Golden State's leading score through two games (both wins), re-injured his ankle on Friday against the Clippers. "It's more rehab, that's all that means," the Sporting News reported Curry as saying. "Just got to be smart about it now and try to get it back to 100 percent and get it stronger so that even if I do step on somebody's foot I can recover. We'll find out tomorrow and see how it reacts." The Warriors need Curry to be ready by Sunday because they are paying a visit to the 2-0 Lakers.

    Biggest game on the slate

San Francisco Giants at Texas Rangers

Pittsburgh Steelers at New Orleans Saints (-1, 44)

    Notable quotable

"I wouldn't put anything past me, to be honest with you." -- Brett Favre to reporters on the possibility of him playing through a broken ankle on Sunday against the Patriots. Favre's streak of 291 consecutive games played is in jeopardy and he is still questionable as of Saturday evening. Reports say Favre expects to play, although other reports suggest that the Vikings are prepared to sit their veteran quarterback.

    Tips and notes

Detroit's Matthew Stafford has not played since Week 1 due to a shoulder injury, but he is back for Sunday's game against the Redskins. Still, offensive coordinator Scott Linehan said there will be no change in the gameplan despite a different look. "We didn't limit our offense at all when Shaun (Hill) was in there," Linehan told the Detroit News. "There will definitely be a noticeable difference. Matt has the ability to attack all parts of the field with his arm, but hopefully he's going to do the same things we asked him to do coming into the season. Take what the defense gives him while still being aggressive with our attack." Meanwhile, the Lions should also benefit from a well-rested Jahvid Best. Thanks to a bye week, Best has now had two full weeks of rest to nurse a turf-toe injury that he suffered in Week 3.

The Texans are coming off a bye week heading into their Monday night game, when they will try to make it a clean sweep of Indianapolis this season. “We’re healthier than we’ve been in a while, so that’s exciting,” Gary Kubiak said after Saturday's practice. “We’ve had good preparation. We’ve got a lot of time between now and game time. We just need to lock-in in what we’re doing. We’ve got a big challenge ahead of us, but boy, we are looking forward to it.” Kubiak noted that guard Mike Brisiel (questionable) has been looking good and that DT Malcolm Sheppard and DE Mark Anderson are about to see increased playing time.

The young and exciting Oklahoma City are Thunder are off to a 2-0 start, building on last season's run to the playoffs. Jeff Green, who scored 21 points in each of the team's two victories, has been a big reason. "He's really developing a nice low post (game) on the left block," said head coach Scott Brooks said. "He has strength. He's a strong, strong kid. He puts pressure on the defense. You put a smaller guy on him and he can post them up and a bigger guy he can shoot out on the 3-point line. He's been good for us and we want him to work on those parts of his game."

Payoff Pitch: Today's Best Mound Matchup
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Madison Bumgarner, San Francisco Giants vs. Tommy Hunter, Texas Rangers

      Madison Bumgarner (7-6, 3.00 ERA)

Bumgarner has been a pleasant surprise for a young San Francisco pitching staff. The 21-year-old rookie southpaw compiled a 7-6 record with a stellar 3.00 ERA in 111 innings of work during the regular season. He had pitched just 10 innings with one start prior to this year.

Bumgarner has been similarly solid in the postseason. In Game 4 at Atlanta, he went six innings and gave up just two runs on six hits, good enough to get the win in the series-clincher. Bumgarner lasted just 4 2/3 innings in his lone NLCS start against the Phillies, but he bounced back for two innings of shutout relief work to help clinch Game 6 at Philadelphia.

Interestingly, Bumgarner was much better on the road than he was at home during the regular season. He was just 1-3 with a 4.60 ERA at AT&T Park, but he went 6-3 with a meager 1.91 ERA in 10 road starts. That appears to be good news for the Giants heading into Game 4.

      Tommy Hunter (13-4, 3.73 ERA)

Not to be outdone by a pitcher three years his junior, Hunter was outstanding for Texas during the regular season. He rolled to an impressive 13-4 record thanks to a 3.73 ERA, no small feat especially in the American League. The righty improved in just about every statistical category from his first year to his second, including a drop in WHIP from 1.30 to 1.24.

Hunter’s first foray into the postseason has not gone as smoothly as it has for Bumgarner. In a potential Game 4 clincher against Tampa Bay, Hunter lasted just four innings and gave up three runs (two earned) on six hits while taking the loss. He exited after a mere 3 1/3 innings in Game 4 against the Yankees, but the Rangers’ bats erupted for a 10-3 win.

Something will have to give on Sunday because while Bumgarner is awesome on the road, Hunter is scary good at home. He compiled a perfect 7-0 record in 11 starts at the Ballpark in Arlington and boasted a 3.06 ERA.

Derek Holland, who has been a force in long relief work, was a contender for the Game 4 start admits Hunter’s postseason struggles. Manager Ron Washington had a decision to make. “It's a decision we have to wait and see, and see what they do,” Hunter told the Dallas Morning News last weekend. “Holland's been great in the bullpen, and a lot of things will factor into it. I really hope I get the ball, but if I don't, I understand.”

To Hunter’s delight, he will get the ball.

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Francisco Giants at Texas Rangers

The Rangers did not have much going for them during the first two games of the regular, but they have plenty going for them at home. Texas went 51-30 at the Ballpark in Arlington during the regular season; fourth best in the American League. San Francisco, meanwhile, was a solid but unspectacular 43-38 on the road.

Perhaps even more encouragingly, the Rangers are sending Tommy Hunter to the mound on Sunday. Hunter was 6-4 with a 4.48 ERA on the road during the regular season. OK numbers, right? Well, not compared to his home marks: 7-0, 3.06 ERA.

Furthermore, Texas gets to use the DH at home and it will likely be Vladimir Guerrero vs. Pablo Sandoval. Advantage: Rangers. "We've got a guy who was one of the best DHs in the league all year, and they don't," said Rangers OF Jeff Francoeur. "Hopefully we can use that advantage in our favor."

A word of caution to bettors who were watching Fox's coverage of Game 2, when Eric Karros said that the Rangers have not lost to a left-handed starter at home since August 29: they have only faced three left-handed starters since. That said, they are faring better against lefties than righties in the postseason. The Rangers are hitting .306 against lefties, .259 against righties.

      Pick: Rangers

Pick 'n' Roll: Today's best NBA bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miami Heat at New Jersey Nets

The Miami Heat proved they were for real with a convincing 96-70 win over the Orlando Magic Friday night. The Heat held the Magic to just 30 percent shooting and played under the total for the third straight game.

"Thirty percent? Every game?" LeBron James told the media, when asked about the defensive expectations for the team. "We just covered for each other. Surprised? When you can see the potential, I can say I'm a little surprised how well we played on both ends of the floor."

Through three games, the Heat have allowed an average of just under 82 points on 40 percent shooting. They’ve also done a good job blocking shots and cleaning the glass, outrebounding Orlando 51-40 Friday and swatting a total of 17 shots in their first three contests.

"Defense," Miami guard Dwyane Wade told reporters, "is where it starts for us."

          Pick: Under

Golden State Warriors at Los Angeles Lakers

The Golden State Warriors always have a puncher’s chance when it comes to covering the spread. Their shoot-first, play-defense-later approach can provide some fireworks but the team will be without one of its brightest sparks Sunday night.

Shooting guard Stephen Curry suffered a sprained ankle in the Warriors’ win over the Los Angeles Clippers Friday. He left midway through the third quarter after injuring his foot while setting a pick. He finished the game with 16 points and six assists.

"Maybe that would be a smart thing to miss Sunday and have almost a full week and get it right before our long road trip,” Curry told the media, referring to the team’s five-game eastern road trip which begins in Detroit November 7.

Curry, who scored 25 points and dished out 11 assists in the season opener versus the Houston Rockets, was already playing on a tender wheel which he hurt in the preseason.

In his last appearance against the Lakers, Curry scored 29 points, including five 3-pointers, in a 124-121 loss to L.A. as 8.5-point home underdogs. He is listed as doubtful for this weekend’s action.

          Pick: Los Angeles

                Daily Sports Roundup: October 31

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Steelers hit the road to battle the Saints, the Broncos take on the Niners in England, and the World Series stages Game 4 in Texas.

                Colliding on the gridiron . . .

The Saints will be looking to bounce back from an ugly loss on Sunday night when they play host to the Steelers to cap off a day of action around the National Football League. New Orleans (4-3 SU, 1-6 ATS) was beaten 30-17 at home by lowly Cleveland last week, as Drew Brees went 37 of 56 for 356 yards and two touchdowns through the air but was picked off four times. Pittsburgh (5-1 SU, 4-2 ATS) edged Miami 23-22 on the road last week, with Ben Roethlisberger throwing for 302 yards and a pair of scores. Oddsmakers have the Saints as 1-point favorites for Sunday, with the total pegged at 44.

Rounding out the NFL's Week 8 slate for Sunday: Buffalo at Kansas City (-7.5), Carolina at St. Louis (-3), Washington at Detroit (-2.5), Green Bay at the Jets (-6), Miami at Cincinnati (-1.5), Jacksonville at Dallas (-6.5), Tennessee at San Diego (-3.5), Tampa Bay at Arizona (-3), Minnesota at New England (-5), Seattle at Oakland (-2.5), and Denver vs. San Francisco (-1). The Broncos (2-5 SU, 2-5 ATS) and Niners (1-6 SU, 3-4 ATS) will be playing at London's Wembley Stadium on Sunday afternoon, with both teams looking to turn around brutal starts to the season.
