    Daily Sports Roundup: October 29

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Flyers and Penguins meet on the ice, while West Virginia takes on Connecticut, and the Lakers head to Phoenix to battle the Suns.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

There's one game on the college football schedule for Friday, with West Virginia at Connecticut. The Mountaineers (5-2 SU, 4-2 ATS) will be looking to bounce back from an ugly 19-14 home loss to Syracuse last time out, as QB Geno Smith threw for just 178 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions. The Huskies (3-4 SU, 3-3 ATS) were blanked 26-0 on the road by Louisville in their last game, as Zach Frazer and Michael Box combined for just 87 yards and an INT through the air. Oddsmakers have West Virginia listed as a 6.5-point road favorite for Friday, with the contest's total at 45.5.

As well, there are two Canadian Football League games on tap for Friday, with Montreal (11-5 SU, 7-9 ATS) at Toronto (8-8 SU, 8-8 ATS), and Hamilton (9-7 SU, 9-7 ATS) at Calgary (11-5 SU, 10-6 ATS). The Alouettes are 4-point road favorites in that first matchup, with the total listed at 49 points. The Stampeders are then 4-point home favorites in Friday's late game, and the oddsmakers have that total pegged at 54 points.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

A busy NBA schedule for Friday offers up a dozen games: Indiana at Charlotte, Cleveland at Toronto, Atlanta at Philadelphia, Sacramento at New Jersey, New York at Boston, Orlando at Miami, Oklahoma City at Detroit, Denver at New Orleans, Milwaukee at Minnesota, Memphis at Dallas, the Clippers at Golden State, and the Lakers at Phoenix. The Lakers began the defense of their championship with a 112-110 home win over the Rockets on Tuesday night. Pau Gasol scored a team-high 29 points for Los Angeles in that game to go along with 11 rebounds, while Kobe Bryant was good for 27 points on just 8-of-20 shooting. Lamar Odom picked up 14 points and 10 boards.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are six games on the National Hockey League's schedule for Friday, with Montreal at the Islanders, Carolina at the Rangers, Buffalo at Atlanta, Edmonton at Chicago, New Jersey at Anaheim, and Philadelphia at Pittsburgh. The Flyers improved to 4-4-1 on the season with a 6-3 home win over Buffalo on Tuesday night. Jeff Carter picked up a goal and two assists for Philadelphia in that win, while Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 32 of the 35 Buffalo shots. The Flyers and Penguins have met twice already this season, while Philadelphia winning 3-2 on the road on October 7 and losing 5-1 at home on October 16. Sidney Crosby scored twice for the Penguins in that last matchup.

Bettors' best friend: Friday's wagering tips

      Line to watch

West Virginia at Connecticut: The home team opened as a 7-point underdog, but that line has since shrunk to 6-points with most services.

Lakers at Suns: The total opened at 212 but that figure has since shrunk to 210.

      Who’s hot

The over is 14-3 in Connecticut’s past 17 home games.

The Islanders are 8-3 in their past 11 home games.

The over is 18-5 in the Oilers past 23 road games.

The over is 8-2 in the Thunders past 10 road games.

      Who’s not

The Devils are 2-11 in their past 13 games.

The Sabres are 2-7 in their past nine.

The under is 7-1 in the Timberwolves past eight against the Eastern Conference.

The Magic is 7-2 ATS in its past nine road games.

      Key stat

4 – Teams last year to win at least 50 games in the Northwest Division, the most of any division in the NBA. The Jazz, Thunder, Nuggets, Trailblazers and Timberwolves are a combined 4-2 to start the season, with one loss coming in the division.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Chicago Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said on Thursday that winger Marian Hossa will be out "likely up to a couple of weeks" after suffering an upper-body injury, according to the Chicago Tribune. Hossa left Wednesday's game against the Los Angeles Kings in the second period with an apparent arm or shoulder injury in the second period. Quenneville said the injury was "not of a serious nature" but refused to give specifics. Hossa was the team's second-leading scorer with 11 points.

      Game of the day

West Virginia Mountaineers at Connecticut Huskies (-6, 45)

      Notable quotable

"I think sometimes our expectations are so high for ourselves that if things don't go perfect then you have a lot of stuff to gripe about. But at the end of the day, we won by plenty of points." -- Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore on his team’s lackluster, 49-20 win over Louisiana Tech.

      Notes and tips

New York Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni has named rookie Landry Fields the team’s starter at shooting guard. Fields, a rookie out of Stanford, dropped 11 points and snagged four caroms in 30 minutes in a season-opening win over Toronto. This is a surprise move as veteran swingman, Wilson Chandler, who scored 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds in 29 minutes, was relegated to the bench and appears be taking a role as the team’s sixth man.

Don’t look now, but the St. Louis Blues might start singing their namesake very soon. The team is off to a strong, 4-1-2 start, but must continue its hot streak without defenseman Roman Polak. The 24-year-old Eastern European skater notched one goal and was plus-2 with six PIM through seven games, but more importantly was averaging nearly 20 minutes of ice time per game. However, Polak will require surgery on his injured wrist and will be out indefinitely, leaving St. Louis shorthanded on the blue line.

At least one player is happy to see Mathias Kiwanuka remain sidelined for the rest of the season. Since the hybrid linebacker-defensive end was injured earlier this year, end Osi Umenyiora has been a pass rushing fiend, amassing seven sacks and six forced fumbles. Also since going down with his injury, the Giants defense has been streaking, holding the Bears to only three points, but giving up 35 to the Cowboys. Overall, the team is 4-0 SU since the Kiwanuka injury.

        Friday's six-pack

Some college football trends to ponder as Week 8 approaches........
-- Michigan covered two of last nine Big 11 road games.

-- Home side covered six of last seven Arizona-UCLA games.

-- Florida Atlantic won, covered last four games against FIU; schools are about 50 miles apart in Miami area.

-- TCU covered seven of last eight games against UNLV.

-- San Jose State covered last five visits to New Mexico State.

-- Air Force covered eight of last ten games against Utah.

        ***********************************

Friday's List of 13: Things I'm looking for this weekend......

        13) Jon Kitna gets the start at QB for Dallas, against a wobbly Jacksonville squad that has already lost four games by 22+ points. Short work week for Dallas, which is 1-5 and in serious trouble.

        12) Michigan State/Missouri are both undefeated road underdogs this week; Spartans are actually an underrated story, twice using fake kicks to spark game-winning drives this season.

        11) Chargers are 2-5, Tennessee 5-2, but San Diego has beaten the Titans seven times in a row. Hard to imagine Kerry Collins outdueling Philip Rivers—Titans need Vince Young back in lineup.

        10) Georgia won its last three games, Florida lost its three, but Gators are 10-2 in last 12 games in this neutral field rivalry. Both teams having down years, which makes this a bigger game, in some ways. Loser is headed to the Independence or Music City Bowl.

        9) 49ers are really starting Troy Smith at QB in London this week? Starting to wonder if Mike Singletary has lost it.

        8) Baylor has been crushed by Texas Longhorns 12 years in a row, with none of the last 11 even close, but last time the series spread was single digits, Bears upset Texas. Baylor became eligible for a bowl last week, now every win gets them to a better bowl game.

        7) If you're a San Francisco Giant fan, you've got to be really excited, as your first World Series title in 56 years is only two games away. If you root for the Rangers, you're glad to have the DH the next three games.

        6) Miami Heat has their home opener, after 1-1 road swing to start season. Feel bad for people in St Pete who lost 20,000-seat sellout for Miami-Orlando exhibition game, because of condensation coming up from hockey rink under the basketball floor. That had to cost them over a million bucks in lost revenue.

        5) Rams are favored for first time since 2007; if they beat Carolina, they get to their bye week 4-4, after being 6-42 the last three years. Big game.

        4) Clippers are going to be worth watching on NBA League Pass because Blake Griffin is a beast. Thing worth watching is whether any of his teammates will play as hard as he does.

        3) Will defending champ Saints get back on track with the hot Steelers coming to town? Reggie Bush's return should help balance the offense.

        2) Oregon is at USC, Auburn at Ole Miss. Is the top of the college football rankings jinxed this year? Last three weeks, the #1 team has lost on the road.

        1) First NFL rematch this year has Texans visiting Indianapolis Monday night, where they’ve never won (0-8). No Dallas Clark is going to hurt the Colts' offense a lot.

Los Angeles Lakers at Phoenix Suns [ESPN | 10:30 PM ET]

LAKERS: (-4.5, O/U 210) Los Angeles opened up defense of their past 2 NBA Championships with a hard earned come from behind win over the Houston Rockets. The Lakers showed off their depth in ultimately winning 112-110 in a high scoring affair. The common theme of the Lakers will be of winning games SU, but not covering from an ATS standpoint. C Pau Gasol looked like the best player in basketball in the season opener, scoring 29 PTS and grabbing 11 rebounds. F Lamar Odom had 14 PTS and 10 rebounds in his own right, proving how this Lakers team can't be considered soft anymore. G Kobe Bryant was his typical brilliant self, scoring 27 PTS and dishing out 7 assists in victory. Los Angeles has won 7 of their past 10 games against the Suns, including their playoff series last season. The Lakers are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games as the listed favorite. Los Angeles is 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games against the Western Conference. The Lakers are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games against a team with a losing SU record.

Lakers are 2-8-1 ATS last 11 games as a road favorite up to 4.5 points.
Under is 4-0 last 4 road games overall.

Key Injuries - F Luke Walton (hamstring) is questionable.

Projected Score: 110 (SIDE of the Day)

SUNS: Phoenix will be playing their 3rd game in 4 days tonight. Luckily for them, they will be able play on adrenaline since this is their season home opener tonight. The Suns are a different team this year without the service of F A'mare Stoudemire, so it's important that the Suns play well in their first opportunity in front of their home fans. PG Steve Nash will likely play limited minutes tonight, considering this is the Suns 1st time playing the back end of consecutive nights. In addition to their home opener, Phoenix will be playing with revenge on their minds. The Suns were eliminated from the playoffs last year to the Lakers in 6 games of the Western Conference Finals. The Suns will need their bench to play well if they are to beat the Lakers tonight. Another great performance from F Hakim Warrick just might do the trick. Warrick had a great double double just last night against the Jazz. The Suns are 9-3 ATS in their last 12 games against a team with a winning SU record. The Suns are 18-7-1 ATS in their last 26 Friday games overall. Phoenix is 23-9 ATS in their last 32 games against a team with a winning percentage above .600%. The Suns are 14-6 ATS in their last 20 games against the Western Conference.

Suns are 19-6-1 ATS in their last 26 home games.
Under is 7-3 in Suns last 10 games as a home underdog.

                    Key Injuries - None Reported.

                    Projected Score: 99

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sacramento Kings at New Jersey Nets (-2, 199)

Don’t look now, but the Kings frontcourt is … good?

Sacramento was minus-1 in rebounding differential in a season-opening 117-116 win over the Timberwolves, but grabbed a very strong 45 rebounds. The team received a balance efforts from its big man, getting 11 boards from Carl Landry, eight from rookie DeMarcus Cousins, seven from Donte Greene, six from Jason Thompson and four from Omri Casspi.

And the unit should only get more deep on Friday when center Samuel Dalembert is expected to make his debut for the Kings.

This group also should improve greatly on its 40 points in the paint in its second game against the Nets as guard Tyreke Evans also will make his season debut. Evans missed the team’s win over Minnesota due to a one-game suspension.

Meantime, the Nets are coming off a miraculous comeback against the Pistons that saw them finish on a 13-3 run. New Jersey struggled to contain the Pistons forwards and despite posting a 44-37 edge on the boards, tout a suspect front line of Brook Lopez, Joe Smith, Travis Outlaw, Kris Humphries, Terrance Williams, Damion James and Derrick Favors.

                    Pick: Kings

Orlando Magic at Miami Heat (-3.5, 185)

It’s this simple for the Miami Heat -- when they hit jump shots, they win.

In a season-opening loss to the Celtics, the Heat made a meager 6-of-22 spot-up jump shots -- good for a meager 27.3 percent -- and notched just 17 points via the set J. On catch-and-shoot opportunities in a 10-point win over the Sixers one night later, the team was nearly twice as good with their stroke, banging 11-of-21 attempts -- a clip of 54.4 percent -- to finish with 30 points from set shots.

Just as important was the outside shooting of James Jones. After burying a pair of triples to give his team life late against Boston, Jones was 6-of-9 from distance against the Sixers and finished with a surprising 20 points.

"When we have our long ball going like that, it's unlimited what we can do offensively," James told the Associated Press.

Further down the court, the Magic should be tired after opening their new arena in front of a raucous crowd against the Wizards. Combine that with the Heat keeping their hot shooting for their home opener, and you get a smoking victory.

                    Pick: Heat

Buffalo Sabres at Atlanta Thrashers (+101, 5.5)

The Sabres have little to fear in Atlanta.

Buffalo has won three of five road games this season and already won in Atlanta once this year, 4-1. The key to that victory on Oct. 20 was capitalizing on even-strength chances.

The team got 5-on-5 goals from Tyler Ennis, Thomas Vanek and Cody McCormick. Coupled with a power play tally from Tyler Myers, and the Thrashers simply couldn’t skate with Buffalo. For the game, the Sabres outshot Atlanta, 42-18 and dominated possession for much of the evening.

"Buffalo is a hard working team, which is somewhat of the identity we want to take on, and we didn't do that tonight," Atlanta goalie Chris Mason told reporters. "Neutral-zone issues -- teams like Buffalo will keep coming at you and take advantage of your mistakes."

Meantime, Atlanta has dropped three of four games and allowed an average of more than four goals per game over that stretch.

                            Pick: Sabres

Montreal Canadiens at New York Islanders (-125, 5.5)

These two teams have no problems with heating up the ice.

While the Canadiens are 3-5 against the total -- the team does typically see higher totals -- the Islanders have done a solid job of playing wide-open, high-scoring games. New York is 5-4 against the number this season and has seen the over hit in 12 of its past 17 games overall dating back to last year.

Recently, the Canadiens have seen two of their past three top the number while three of five have hit the over for the Islanders.

The key for the Islanders has been the return of star forward John Tavares, who has six goals and two assists the past two weeks. For the Canadiens, Montreal has been led by the offensive outburst of left wing Mike Cammalleri, who has three goals and three assists this year.

Expect for Cammalleri and Tavares to add to their totals tonight.

                            Pick: Over
