Cowboys favored by 3 points over Giants Monday

        --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        NEW YORK GIANTS (4-2)
        at DALLAS COWBOYS (1-4)

Kickoff: Monday, 8:35 p.m. EDT, Line: Dallas -3, Total: 44.5

The Cowboys remain desperate for a win, as they’ve dropped two straight games while the Giants have been one of the NFL’s hottest teams with three consecutive victories. The New York pass rush (21 sacks) should give Dallas fits. The Cowboys don’t allow many sacks (seven) but, like the rest of the team, commit a lot of penalties. Dallas is on pace to be the second team in NFL history to average 80-plus penalty yards per game.

There is some injury news to report and it is all good news. New York WR Hakeem Nicks has been dealing with a bad hamstring all week, but says he will play Monday night. DL Justin Tuck and K Lawrence Tynes have both fully recovered from ankle injuries and will both suit up for this game. For Dallas, WR Dez Bryant will also play despite being limited in practice this week with an ankle injury of his own.

New York is winning in spite of Eli Manning’s highest interception rate (3.9%) since his rookie year, with eight interceptions in six games. The Cowboys have picked off 12 Manning passes in 11 career meetings, but Manning is 6-5 in those contests with 20 TD, a 57.6% completion rate and 221 passing YPG. He threw for 330 yards in a 33-31 win in the first regular-season game at Cowboys Stadium last year. Nicks leads the team with 36 catches, 417 receiving yards and six touchdowns.

Tony Romo has had success against New York, with a 64% completion rate, 204 passing YPG, 16 TD and 10 INT in nine career games against the Giants. But he threw three of those picks in last year’s home loss to New York and the Giants entered the week ranked second in the NFL in both total defense (265 YPG) and passing defense (172 YPG). The Cowboys defense has been nearly as effective as New York, ranking fourth in the league in both total defense (281 YPG) and passing defense (181 YPG). Dallas needs to create more opportunities for the offense as it has forced a league-low four turnovers this season.

The Giants are 4-1 ATS & SU in the past five meetings in the series, but this FoxSheets trend shows why Dallas will win on Monday night.

Play On - Home teams (DALLAS) - after failing to cover the spread in 4 out of their last 5 games, a terrible team (<=25%) playing a team with a winning record. (24-4 over the last 10 seasons.) (85.7%, +19.6 units. Rating = 3*).

These FoxSheets trend shows why the Under is a good bet.

Play Under - Home teams where the total is between 42.5 and 49 points (DALLAS) - off 2 or more consecutive overs, in a game involving two average offensive teams (18-23 PPG). (45-17 since 1983.) (72.6%, +26.3 units. Rating = 3*).

Monday hockey betting finds Kings at Wild

Todd Richards' club returns home after a two-game road trip for Monday's matchup against the Los Angeles Kings, who are 4-1 in their last five contests.

Minnesota was spanked, 5-1, as a 196 road dog in Friday night's game against the Vancouver Canucks. Both clubs started backup netminders with Minnesota's Jose Theodore opposing Vancouver's Cory Schneider.

Theodore stopped 30-of-35 shots in his first outing of the season. The former Hart and Vezina Trophy winner had no answer for Canucks centerman Manny Malhotra, who tipped in two goals.

Minnesota's Antti Miettinen notched his squad's only goal at 17:25 of the third period. The 30-year-old was assisted by left winger Guillaume Latendresse, who logged a point for a third straight game.

The combined six goals slipped 'over' the 'total' of 5 ½ by a 'hook.' Neither club allowed a power play goal, uniting to kill nine shorthanded stints.

Minnesota is 2-2 in its first four home dates, with the 'over' cashing at 3-1. Miettinen and Co. have outscored their opposition, 15-11, in that span.

The Wild expect to start regular goalie Niklas Backstrom in Monday's game. Backstrom is 3-3 in his six outings with a 2.32 GAA.

Los Angeles notched season-high scoring in Saturday's 6-4 win as a 116 road dog against the Colorado Avalanche. The Kings logged goals on 2-of-5 power plays, while successfully killing 4-of-6 penalties.

Kings centerman Brad Richardson logged his first career hat trick, with two of his three goals coming in the final stanza. The 25-year-old poked a team-high six shots on goal.

Los Angeles' Jarret Stoll assisted Richardson with the game's only shorthanded goal. Stoll won 10-of-18 faceoffs en route to picking up a point for a fourth game in his last five.

Kings goalie Jonathan Quick improved to 4-1 in his five outings, stopping 28-of-32 shots. The Connecticut native saw his GAA rise to 1.97 after allowing six goals over his prior four starts.

The combined 10 goals leaped 'over' the 5 ½-goal 'total' early, with right winger Dustin Brown's goal in the second period lifting the Kings to a 4-2 lead.

Los Angeles is 2-2 in its first four road games, with the 'total' also splitting, 2-2. The 'over' is 6-1-2 in the last nine games played by Terry Murray's squad on one day of rest.

The Kings are 6-2 in their last eight meetings against Minnesota, with the 'over' going 5-3. Backstrom stopped 29-of-31 shots for the Wild in last March's duel between the rivals, won by Minnesota, 3-2, as a 103 home dog.

Monday's battle is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. (PT), with Versus providing the national television coverage.

Los Angeles will have one day off before playing its fourth game in its five-game road journey, visiting the Chicago Blackhawks as part of Wednesday's league slate. Minnesota will be idle for two days before Thursday's home game against the Washington Capitals.

NFL Odds: Desperate Dallas hosts Giants

The Dallas Cowboys are running out of chances to save their season when they host the New York Giants on Monday Night Football.

Bookmaker.com has Dallas as three-point home favorites (minus 125) with a total of 44-points. New York is plus 160 to win the game outright.

Dallas (1-4 straight-up, 1-4 against the spread) badly needed a win last Sunday at Minnesota and lost 24-21 as one-point 'dogs. The Cowboys had more total yards (314-188) and won the time of possession (32-28 minutes), but were victimized by costly interceptions and penalties.

That continued a trend as the Cowboys rank 29th in the NFL in turnover ratio. They've been called for the third-most penalties in the league (49) and lead the NFL in average penalty yards per game (80.8).

Dallas' offense continues to move the football. It ranks third in the leauge at 400 YPG. However, points scored are 20.4 per game (ranked 16th) due to turnovers and drives stalling at key times.

The defense ranks fourth in yards allowed (281.4 YPG), but surrender 22.2 PPG (ranked 21st). Special teams and short fields due to turnovers deserve some of the blame.

The Cowboys have four NFC East games remaining after Monday, but their chances of making the playoffs are basically over if they fall to 1-5. That's not what owner Jerry Jones is looking for, especially hosting the Super Bowl this year.

Coach Wade Phillips will certainly be fired at year's end if he doesn't make the playoffs. Bill Cowher, Jon Gruden and John Fox are three high-profile names already being bandied about.

The Cowboys are 0-2 SU and ATS at home with losses to Chicago (27-20) and Tennessee (34-27). The 'over' is 2-0 in those contests. They're 1-4 ATS in their last five Monday night games.

The New York Giants (4-2 SU, 3-3 ATS) are riding a three-game winning streak with home wins over Chicago (17-3) and Detroit (28-20) and a road win at Houston (34-10). The only failure to 'cover' in that span was as 10-point 'chalk' versus Detroit last week.

Coach Tom Coughlin was getting the Wade Phillips treatment in the media before the winning streak. He's turned things around with old-school Giants' football, namely running the ball and defense.

Ahmad Bradshaw is sixth in the league in rushing (97 YPG) and is averaging 109.7 YPG the last three weeks. The bruising Brandon Jacobs has used his 265 pounds to get four rushing TDs the last three games after being shutout the first three.

Quarterback Eli Manning and the passing attack provide good balance at 12th in the NFL (234.3 YPG). He'll take some chances down the field early as Dallas gears up to stop the run.

The Giants' defense is second in the league in total yards (264.8 YPG). The pass rush is tied for second with 21 sacks. They'll need to get pressure on quarterback Tony Romo as he'll have success against the Giants' secondary if given time.

The Giants are 1-1 SU and ATS on the road this year. They looked horrible in the 'Manning Bowl' in Week 2, losing 38-14 as four-point 'dogs. New York is 19-7 ATS in its last 26 road games overall. The 'over' is 6-0 in its last six games versus the NFC East.

New York swept both games with Dallas last year and is 4-1 SU and ATS in the last five meetings. The 'over' is 6-2-1 in the last nine.

Giants' wide receiver Hakeem Nicks (hamstring) and defensive end Justin Tuck (ankle) missed Friday's practice, but are expected to play. Fullback Madison Hedgecock (hamstring) and defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka (neck) are both likely out.

Dallas left guard Kyle Kosier (Achilles) is expected to miss the game.

Kickoff is at 5:30 p.m. (PT) on ESPN. Weather is not a factor with the retractable roof of Cowboys Stadium.
