    Daily Sports Roundup: October 25

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Coyotes travel to Montreal to take on the Canadiens, while the Giants and Cowboys hook up in an MNF matchup down in Dallas.

    Colliding on the gridiron . . .

It's the Giants (4-2 SU, 3-3 ATS) vs. the Cowboys (1-4 SU, 1-4 ATS) in Dallas this week on Monday Night Football in an NFC East clash. New York got past the Lions 28-20 at home last week, with Eli Manning throwing for 177 yards and two touchdowns in that victory. Ahmad Bradshaw ran for 133 yards in that game for New York, while Brandon Jacobs rushed for a pair of scores. Dallas fell 24-21 in Minnesota last time out, with Tony Romo throwing for 220 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions. Roy Williams had a pair of TD catches in that loss for the Cowboys. Oddsmakers have the Cowboys listed as 3-point favorites for Monday, with the matchup's total at 44.5 points.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

As well, there are three games on the National Hockey League's schedule for Monday night, with Philadelphia at Columbus, Los Angeles at Minnesota, and Phoenix at Montreal. The Canadiens had no trouble with the Senators in their last outing on Saturday, cruising to a 3-0 road win behind a 19-save shutout from Carey Price. Andrei Kostitsyn scored twice for Montreal in that victory, while Benoit Pouliot provided the team's other goal. The Coyotes fell 4-3 at home in overtime to the Hurricanes on Saturday night. Ilya Bryzgalov made 36 saves for Phoenix in that defeat, while Kyle Turris (two) and Scottie Upshall provided markers. Wojtek Wolski picked up two assists.

Bettors' best friend: Monday's wagering tips

      Lines to watch

The Dallas Cowboys opened as 3.5-point favorites against the New York Giants but are now listed at -3 at most books.

      Weather to watch

Meteorologists expect 16 mph winds out of the south for Monday night’s Giants-Cowboys game.

      Who’s hot

New York Giants are 19-7 ATS in their last 26 road games.

Los Angeles Kings have won six of their last eight meetings with the Minnesota Wild.

      Who’s not

The Philadelphia Flyers have lost three of their last five despite averaging more than 35 shots per game over that stretch.

The Phoenix Coyotes are 1-10-3 in their last 14 games against the Montreal Canadiens.

      Key stat

1 – number of teams in the Super Bowl era that have started the season 1-5, but rebounded to make the playoffs. The 1970 Cincinnati Bengals were the only team to pull it off out of 148 1-5 squads. The Dallas Cowboys have started the year 1-4.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Lawrence Tynes (ankle), New York Giants kicker: Tynes is expected to play against Dallas after suffering from a sprained non-kicking ankle. The Giants have released Shayne Graham, who filled in for him in Week 6’s 28-20 win over Detroit. Tynes is 5-of-8 with his field goal tries this season but has only made two of his last five attempts.

      Game of the day

New York Giants at Dallas Cowboys (-3, 44.5)

      Notable quotable

"I still can't believe they are 1-4 with all the talent they got on that team. Something's not right there but we definitely know they are still a very good football team. It gives us a great opportunity to put more distance between the two of us." – Giants tight end Kevin Boss on the Dallas Cowboys’ season leading up to Monday night’s game.

      Notes and tips

The Dallas Cowboys’ DeMarcus Ware has Eli Manning’s number. Ware has sacked Manning eight times in 11 career meetings and sits third in the NFL with seven total sacks this season. Ware also has 72 tackles and forced a couple of fumbles lifetime against the Giants.

The Los Angeles Kings forward Wayne Simmonds could face discipline from the NHL after he was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct for butt-ending Colorado’s T.J. Galiardi in the groin. The league is currently reviewing the incident. Meanwhile, the Kings are already without Drew Doughty, who is out for about a week with an upper-body injury.

Columbus Blue Jackets coach Scott Arniel made some serious changes to his lines following a 6-2 loss to the Calgary Flames on Friday. Captain Rick Nash was matched up with center Derick Brassard and right winger Jake Voracek, while Antoine Vermette skated with R.J. Umberger and Derek Dorsett on the second line. Columbus responded with a 3-2 win over the Chicago Blackhawks Saturday.

          --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
          --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Phoenix Coyotes at Montreal Canadiens (-140, 5)

Nobody’s calling for Jaroslav Halak anymore in Montreal.

Carey Price is coming off a 19-save shutout – his first in almost two years – over the Ottawa Senators and is 4-2-1 with a 2.27 goals-against average and a .916 save percentage to start the year.

While a 19-save shutout doesn’t sound like much, Price made a number of huge saves and is controlling his rebounds much better than he was last year when Halak took the Habs on their ride in the playoffs while Price watched from the bench.

“It’s scary when he starts playing like that,” Montreal defenseman P.K. Subban told reporters after Saturday’s win. “To be honest with you, I think he’s one of the best goalies in the NHL right now. I don’t see too many guys who are better. He makes those second and third saves and gives us a chance to win.”

Montreal has also outshot its last four opponents by a margin of 131-81, so they’re doing a lot of good things in front of Price as well.

Meanwhile, The Coyotes have just one regulation win in their last 14 meetings with the Canadiens.

          Pick: Canadiens

Los Angeles Kings at Minnesota Wild (-115, 5.5)

The Los Angeles Kings have a ton of talent on the roster, but that hasn’t translated into much for them on the power play so far this year.

They managed a couple of goals with the man advantage in a 6-4 win over the Colorado Avalanche to move their power play efficiency to a whopping 11.1 percent so far this year.

On the other hand, the Wild own the league’s best power play at 38.7 percent. Matt Cullen has been a big part of that after coming over from the Carolina Hurricanes in the offseason.

“That was one thing with (Hurricane head coach) Peter Laviolette, it was unreal, every time I would step over the boards, he would tell me to shoot the puck,” Cullen told reporters. “That kind of hammers it into your head to get pucks at the net. I think that’s been a key for our power play. Our power play is not getting caught up in trying to make too many plays and too many passes."

Cullen leads the team with nine points through seven games.

          Pick: Wild

                  **********************************************

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday........

                  13) 30 seconds into the second quarter, Raiders led 38-0 at Denver in as surprising a rout as I've seen in years. Oakland had 328 rushing yards in a devastating 59-14 win that leaves Broncos 4-13 in their last 17 games.

                  12) Chargers' four turnovers (-4) contributed to New England's 14-yard edge in average field position, and made San Diego's hole too big to crawl out of as the Patriots held on for a 23-20 win at Qualcomm Sunday.

                  11) Cardinal passers completed 12 of 33 passes at Seattle, as Seahawks grabbed first place in NFC West with an easy 22-10 win. Next time you hear someone say Kurt Warner isn't a first ballot Hall of Famer, look up Arizona's record before and after he was a Cardinal (and Ram too).

                  10) Miami hadn't started a drive in enemy territory all season, but on their first two drives Sunday, started at the Steeler 13-22 yard lines. Their three FGs on three red zone trips cost them in a 23-22 loss that ended on a weird fumble play on the Miami goal line. Need to score touchdowns to beat good teams in the NFL.

                  9) DeAngelo Hall became the first player in nine years to pick off four passes in a game, one of which he ran back 92 yards for the winning TD as Washington made Donovan McNabb a winner in his homecoming to the Windy City, 17-14.

                  8) Buffalo deserved to beat the Ravens; they converted 11-17 on third down, passed for 374 yards, but blew a 24-10 lead, lost 37-34 in OT to a Baltimore team that obviously took the Bills too lightly.

                  7) Bills are last winless team; will members of the '08 Lions pop open bottles of champagne when the last winless team finally gets their first win each season? You know, like the '72 Dolphins celebrate there being no unbeaten teams ever year? I'm just asking.

                  6) So Drew Brees has a son this week and they name him Bowen, then a guy name Bowens picks Brees twice, and runs both of them back for a touchdown? Weird, almost as weird as Cleveland's punter running 68 yards on a fake punt. Very bad day for the defending champs.

                  5) Eagles led 19-10 with 13:26 left to play, then got outscored 27-0 the rest of the way as Tennessee won its 12th straight game against NFC teams, beating Philly 37-19, ending a rough 20 hours for Philly fans.

                  4) Not sure if there's a connection or not, but over was 9-4 in the same week the NFL went nuts about defenders hitting ball carriers too hard.

                  3) There were zero defensive TDs last week; there were ten Sunday. 49ers, Bengals, Bears all got one but lost (Bears also gave one up).

                  2) Would it have hurt NBC to show Packer GM Ted Thompson once? After all, he's the guy who orchestrated the Favre trade, the guy whose job is on the line maybe even moreso than Mike McCarthy. As exciting a game as that was last night, Thompson was a central, unseen figure.

                  1) You root for the Packers, you watch an exciting game every week, you sweat a lot, you're glad Aaron Rodgers is your quarterback, and so you thank Ted Thompson for doing the tough thing, trading Favre.
