College football opening line report: Week 9

Perhaps Jay Kornegay, the sports book director at the Las Vegas Hilton, put it best when describing Michigan State this season:

"Fool's gold."

There's always one every season, right? The team that gets the bounces, that has the karma, that just finds a way to win games. Well, this year's version -- through October at least -- is the surging Spartans.

You know, the team that is 8-0, overall. The team that is 6-2 against the spread. The team that is getting it done, even when most think they won't.

Take this past victory, a 35-27 rally over Northwestern on the road. The Spartans, ranked No. 7 in the first BCS installment, were down most of the game. They even trailed, 17-0, out of the gate.

Yet, there they were in the final minutes, with a one-point lead, and a miracle chance at a cover. Well, a broken tackle here, a missed wrap up there, and all of a sudden, a late touchdown snares the Spartans' sixth spread win of the season.

Miracle made.

"Great team win, I can't say enough about our team," Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio said. "Last February, we talked about it being a special football team and we continue to prove that over and over again."

But there's no fooling Las Vegas, right? It's there where the oddsmakers realm, and it's there where people, moving forward, will truly decide just how good this team is.

Listen, the competition gets stiffer -- at least in the form of Iowa and Penn State -- from here on in. And with each week, the pressure mounts on this team that clearly isn't used to being in the BCS Top 10.

So what do the experts think of them?

"Well, let's put it this way, they'll be underdogs this week vs. Iowa," said Pete Korner of the Sports Club in Las Vegas. "I think it might need to be a little lower, and I think the bettors may drive it down that way anyhow, but we stuck it at Iowa -7 this week. The Hawkeyes are home, they're coming off a loss, and they will be ready."

Spread aside, we'll probably get the truest indication of the Spartans on Saturday -- win or lose -- when they play those aforementioned Hawkeyes, with Big Ten and BCS title implications abound.

Iowa is tough, it is battle tested, and regardless of the record, it is used to life in these late-season, nip-and-tuck games.

"It might be a close, tight Big Ten game," Korner said. "But it might be a blowout, too. If it is, it'll be a blowout for Iowa, though."

And with that, let's take a look at some of the other marquee Week 9 games, and the opening opinion out of Las Vegas:

Florida State (-4.5) at N.C. State

"The Thursday night game is always going to get marquee action. This will be bet," Korner said. "And this is a standard line. We'll see what the public does with it. I like Florida State, I like the direction they are headed in, and so they get the nod here as the road favorite."

West Virginia (-4.5) at UConn

"West Virginia is just a better team all around," Korner said. "UConn has some problems on offense, and West Virginia will be coming off a loss. This is going to go higher before it goes lower, and West Virginia might have their way here."

Georgia (+1) vs. Florida (Jacksonville)

"Really, it's a pick 'em game here, and there's not much difference on either side," Korner said. "Both teams aren't having the seasons they're used to, and that may affect the action. But really, it could go either way."

Missouri (+6) at Nebraska

"The public is still in love with Nebraska, a very heavily bet team this season." Korner said. "I think Missouri, if it moves to seven, is a really good play. If the public continues to hit Nebraska, it'll get to seven, but let's just see what they do. They may like Missouri a bit more this week, because they just had a big win over Oklahoma."

Oregon (-10) at USC

"We had to go high, because Oregon is No. 1, and all the other teams, like Boise State, who are chasing them, will have already played their games before Oregon kicks off," Korner said. "So, we went high, because Oregon's going to know just how well Boise played before they step on the field. They will have to match them, or top them. But USC might have something here. Lot of points, at home, and this will kind of be treated like their bowl game."

Colorado (+23) at Oklahoma

"Not much to see here. Oklahoma is coming off a loss, and will look to take care of business," Korner said. "Colorado has some questions at the quarterback position, and all the motivation is on the Oklahoma side. They're going to look to really, really punish Colorado."

Louisiana Tech Bulldogs at Boise State Broncos (-38)

Boise State looks to take another step forward in its quest for a national championship appearance when it hosts fast-paced Louisiana Tech Tuesday.

Line history
Oddsmakers opened BSU as a 37-point favorite which climbed a half point to its current standing with nearly 75 percent of action on the Broncos.

Boise State is 5-1 against the spread this season and has gone 9-3 ATS in its last 12 WAC games. Louisiana Tech is just 3-4 ATS on the year and a dismal 17-41-1 ATS in its last 59 road contests. The Broncos have are 4-2 ATS versus the Bulldogs in their past six but just 4-6 in their last 10 meetings going back to 1998.

These teams have combined for a 5-2 over/under record in their last seven head-to-head meetings. Boise State is 4-2 over/under this season while Louisiana Tech boast a 3-3-1 over/under mark.

Need for speed
The No. 2 Broncos fared well over the first half of the slate, which included impressive victories over Virginia Tech and Oregon State. But Boise State (6-0, 2-0) certainly can’t afford a slip-up against the Bulldogs in the Western Athletic Conference matchup.

First-year Louisiana Tech coach Skip Dykes is speeding things up on offense with a no-huddle attack designed to keep defenses off guard and unable to rely on their normal substitution patterns. The Bulldogs (3-4, 2-1) had things clicking in their most recent game when they rolled up 683 yards in a 48-35 victory over Idaho.

Bucking Broncos
Yards and points will be much harder to come by against a Boise State defense that ranks first in total defense (210.2 yards per game), first in rushing defense (59.3) and second in scoring defense (12.3 points). The Broncos haven’t allowed a single point in two WAC games, blanking New Mexico State and San Jose State.

Boise State is eighth against the pass (150.8) and that will make it challenging for Louisiana Tech quarterback Ross Jenkins to repeat the stellar performance he had against Idaho. Jenkins was the conference’s Offensive Player of the Week after throwing for a career-best 422 yards and three touchdowns against Idaho.

Taulib Ikharo (31 receptions) and Richie Casey (28) have been Louisiana Tech’s top receivers. Lennon Creer leads the Bulldogs with 568 rushing yards.

Gimmie Moore
Even harder than scoring against Boise State is trying to stop the Broncos’ well-oiled offense led by Heisman Trophy candidate Kellen Moore. Boise State ranks fourth in both scoring offense (47.5) and total offense (523.8).

Moore is completing 69.5 percent of his passes and has 16 touchdowns against one interception. He has thrown for 1,567 yards.

Receiver Titus Young is having a fabulous season with 33 receptions for 581 yards. Young and Austin Pettis (25 receptions) each have caught four touchdown passes.

Doug Martin leads Boise State in rushing with 544 yards.

Louisiana Tech has allowed 35 or more points four points and is 113th in total defense (448.7). The passing defense is among the worst in the nation, allowing 296.7 yards per game. Only Texas Tech and Tulsa are giving up more yards through the air.

Defensive end Matt Broha has been a bright spot with nine tackles for loss, including six sacks.

Weather
The blue turf at Broncos Stadium in Boise will be slick with the forecast calling for rain Tuesday night. Showers and a game-time temperature in the low 40s could cool off the offenses. There will be a slight breeze to go along with the rain, which will continue throughout the night.

Florida State at North Carolina State (+3.5 57.5)

Two high-scoring ACC offenses collide Thursday, when Florida State visits North Carolina State in a critical Atlantic Division game.

The Seminoles (6-1, 4-0 ACC) are coming off a bye, which allowed quarterback Christian Ponder to rest his injured elbow. Ponder ruptured a bursa sack near his elbow on his right throwing arm in the Seminoles’ sluggish 24-19 win over Boston College on Oct. 16. The senior pro prospect sat out most of last week but returned to practice Saturday and all reports have him throwing the ball with no issues.

The Wolfpack (5-2, 2-1) also enjoyed a bye last week and claim to be ready for what coach Tom O’Brien is calling the biggest game of his three-year tenure. North Carolina was upset at East Carolina 33-27 on Oct. 16.

THE LINE
Florida State opened as a 3-point road favorite. It was up to 3.5 as of Wednesday, with even a few 4s showing up.

North Carolina State is 8-0-1 ATS in the last nine meetings against the Seminoles, including covering as a 10-point underdog in last year’s 45-42 loss in Tallahassee. The Wolfpack is 7-4 ATS as a home underdog in O’Brien’s three seasons.

THE TOTAL
The total opened at 56.5 and was up to 57.5 on Wednesday.

Florida State is averaging 34.9 and allowing 16.4 points per game. North Carolina State is averaging 36 and allowing 23.71 points per game.

The teams have combined for an average of 49.2 points in their last five meetings.

Heavy rains moved through the area on Wednesday and were forecast to continue into Thursday morning. The rain is expected to stop before kickoff.

NC State’s Wilson, a 5-11 dual-threat quarterback, has thrown eight interceptions in his last three games. Wilson completed 20-of-30 passes for 349 yards with five touchdowns and two interceptions in last season’s loss to Florida State.

In that game, Ponder went 26 of 40 for 277 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. On the season, Ponder is completing 60 percent of his passes, but he has struggled on the road. The senior is completing just 51.9 percent of his passes with three touchdowns and three interceptions on the road.

BATTLE UP FRONT
Florida State leads the nation in sacks and will be chasing Wilson with sophomore defensive end Brandon Jenkins. The North Carolina State offensive line has surrendered 17 sacks this season.

Like the Seminoles, North Carolina State also has been good at pressuring quarterbacks. The Wolfpack are averaging three sacks a game. With Ponder’s elbow concerns and the FSU O-line missing a starter, you have to expect NC State to bring plenty of pressure.

What Bettors Need to Know

West Virginia Mountaineers at Connecticut Huskies (6.5, 45.5)

Two teams coming off disappointing performances square off when West Virginia (5-2 , 4-3 ATS) takes on UConn (3-4, 3-4ATS) Friday night. The Mountaineers’ lackluster offense finally caught up to them with a 19-14 loss to Syracuse, while the Huskies were shutout by Louisville losing 26-0 last week.

Why West Virginia will cover
In terms of talent, there are too many personnel mismatches in this contest. It starts on the defensive side, with the Mountaineers giving up just 13.3 points per game this season.

Much of that can be attributed to a solid secondary, which held Syracuse quarterback Ryan Nassib to just 63 yard passing last week. The week prior, USF’s B.J. Daniels threw for 119 yards for no touchdowns and three interceptions.

UConn shows no signs of breaking that trend with a passing attack that ranks 102nd in the nation. And let’s not forget the drama surrounding the quarterback situation. Notre Dame transfer Zach Fraser began the season with much hype as the starter but soon lost his job to Cody Endres. The former backup seemed to inject some life into the team, leading UConn to back-to-back 40-point performances and a decent showing against Rutgers.

But then last week, Cody Endres reportedly failed his third drug test and head coach Randy Edsall kicked him off the team. The suspension had a trickle effect both in terms of talent and chemistry, which no doubt contributed to their poor showing against Louisville.

On the ground, the WVU run defense is allowing less than 100 yards per game. On offense, running back Noel Devine will be looking to raise his draft stock after a couple performances well below his talent level, in part to an injured toe.

Why UConn will cover
After being blown out for the first couple games in this series, UConn nearly pulled off an upset on the road last year, losing by just four points. The Huskies generated 501 yards of offense and actually held the lead at the half in that game. The team was dealing with the tragic stabbing death of CB Jasper Howard at the time, so a little drama at QB is miniscule compared to what the team dealt with last year.

Zach Frazer has a chip on shoulder. He was originally signed with Notre Dame with much hype being rated one of the top QBs in high school. But after seeing himself fourth on Charlie Weis’ depth chart, Frazer transferred to UConn.

This year, he suffered more setbacks losing his job to Endres. Then, in the wake of Endres’ suspension, Randy Edsall opted for freshman Mike Box to start over Frazer. Box is out with a concussion this week, so by default Frazer will start Friday. He has a lot to prove and he certainly has the talent to keep the Huskies in the game.

Line and trends
The line opened up at -7 in favor of WVU and has since seen a half-point move down to -6.5 at most sportsbooks. The Mountaineers are a perfect 6-0 in this series and they have covered the spread in all matchups except for last year. But, keep in mind, that WVU has had problems covering against teams with losing records, going 2-6 ATS.

The total sits at 45.5 and cappers looking for past trends will find themselves just data mining to justify their original instinct. The over has hit four out of six times in this series, but WVU has one of the top defenses and is on a two-game under streak. It is 1-5 over/under in its last five Big East games but UConn has hit the over seven times in its last eight conference games.

Perhaps a more telling stat is that in the Edsall-Stewart matchups, the difference between the total and the final score have stayed within a touchdown.

Partly cloudy skies and lows in the 30s are expected by kickoff with northwest winds coming in at 10 to 15 mph.
