Bettors’ best friend: Saturday’s wagering tips

Lines to keep an eye on

West Virginia opened as a 16-point favorite over Syracuse at some shops, but the line has since dropped to -13.

Arizona opened as an 8-point favorite over Washington at some shops, but the line has since dropped to -6.5.

The Air Force at TCU line has been bouncing around between -18 and -20. It currently sits at -18.5.

The line on Texas Tech and Colorado opened at even money, but Colorado is now favored by 2.5 points.

    Weather to watch

Giants at Phillies: Skies should be clear all day on Saturday. A 14 mph wind is expected to blow out from home plate to center field.

Check out our college football weather report for Week 8.

    Who’s hot

The Phillies are 12-1 in Roy Oswalt’s last 13 starts and they are 8-0 in Oswalt’s last eight home starts.

The under is 4-0-1 in Jonathan Sanchez’s last five starts and 5-0-1 in Sanchez’s last six road starts.

The Dallas Stars are 7-1 in their last eight overall.

Oklahoma State is 4-0 ATS in its last four overall and the over is 5-1 in OSU's last six overall.

    Who’s not

The Ottawa Senators are 1-6 in their last seven overall.

The New Jersey Devils are 2-8 in their last 10 overall.

Boston College is 1-9 ATS in its last 10 overall.

Tennessee is 1-4 ATS in its last five overall.

    Key stat

5-0, 1.76 – Oswalt's win-loss record and ERA this season at Citizens Bank Park. He has pitched 41 innings there and has recorded 42 strikeouts against just six walks.

    Injuries that shouldn’t be overlooked

To say the Indianapolis Colts are banged up would be an understatement. And no, Dallas Clark is not their only problem. Clark is officially out for the year as the team placed him on injured reserve on Friday after it was determined that the tight end will need wrist surgery. But it goes even beyond that. Wide receiver Austin Collie is expected to miss several weeks following hand surgery and running back Joseph Addai will reportedly be on the shelf for at least one game due to a shoulder problem.

    Biggest game on the slate

    LSU at Auburn (-6, 51.5)

San Francisco Giants at Philadelphia Phillies (-158, 7)

    Notable quotable

"Yeah, I prefer to be lucky. I think that's met with some earnest preparation and some hard work. And I think that those guys that get lucky that maybe they work hard. I kind of enjoy that. I hope that that continues." -- LSU head coach Les Miles, when asked by the editor of the Auburn student newspaper how he would respond to people who say that he gets lucky with some of his ambitious play-calls.

    Tips and notes

Oklahoma wideout Dejuan Miller suffered a meniscus injury in practice on Tuesday the team announced on Thursday that he will miss the rest of the season. The junior had 15 catches for 199 yards on the season. Senior Cameron Kenney (nine catches, 125 yards, one touchdown) will likely see more playing time. But there is plenty of good news for the Sooners. They have won seven in a row against Missouri and 19 of the last 20 in the series.

Miles says that starting wideout Rueben Randle will be close to 100 percent for Saturday's showdown against Auburn. Randle has caught only one pass for 29 yards since breaking a finger on October 9. In the three games prior to that injury he hauled in 12 passes for 141 yards. Miles also said during his radio show earlier in the week that he will continue to use two quarterbacks but that Jordan Jefferson remains the starter.

The Devils were missing three players at practice on Friday--right wing David Clarkson, defenseman Anton Volchenkov, and left wing Zach Parise. However, New Jersey has back-to-back games this weekend with a long road trip starting on Sunday, so the rest is thought to be precautionary. The real bad news for the Devils is that they have made all kinds of line changes and none has worked en route to a 2-4-1 record to begin the season.

Payoff Pitch: Today's Best Mound Matchup
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jonathan Sanchez, San Francisco Giants vs. Roy Oswalt, Philadelphia Phillies

        Jonathan Sanchez (13-9, 3.07 ERA)

Sanchez was solid in Game 2 at Philadelphia, but he was not good enough to beat Oswalt as the Phillies leveled the series at one game apiece with a 6-1 victory. The lefty went six innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits while striking seven and walking three.

“I thought he threw the ball well,” said manager Bruce Bochy said. “I thought he did a good job. Johnny's been probably as good as anybody on our staff the last six weeks. I thought he did a nice job in Game 2.”

It was a second straight strong playoff performance by Sanchez, albeit not as dominant as his first one against the Braves. On the road for Game 3 in Atlanta with the series tied 1-1, Sanchez pitched 7 1/3 innings and allowed a mere two hits and one run while striking out 11.

During a breakout regular season, Sanchez compiled a 31-9 record and a meager 3.07 ERA. His stats against the Phillies were certainly up to par: 13 innings, five hits, two runs, and 13 strikeouts.

        Roy Oswalt (21-10, 2.44 ERA)

Oswalt has already endured an up-and-down postseason. The good news for Philadelphia is that Oswalt’s main highlight off the playoffs was his previous start against San Francisco. The veteran righty allowed just three hits and one run while striking out nine in eight innings of work to pick up the win in Game 2.

However, the Phillies sent Oswalt out to the mound for ninth-inning relief duty on Wednesday with Game 4 tied and Philly trailing the series 2-1. He promptly allowed two hits and a game-ending sacrifice fly as the Giants prevailed in walk-off fashion.

The question is which Oswalt will show up on Saturday—the dominant one in Game 2 against San Francisco or the one who took the loss in Game 4 and also surrendered five hits and four runs (three earned) in five innings against the Reds one series earlier?

Oswalt, who threw 18 pitches on Wednesday, said prior to his team’s season-saving Game 5 victory that he would be ready to start Game 6. “At this time of year, you just have to pitch,” he said of his relief appearance. “It doesn't really matter what the situation is. I thought I had decent stuff.”

        This Day in Baseball
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On October 23 in Baseball History...

1910 - Philadelphia's Jack Coombs won his third game of the World Series, beating the Chicago Cubs 7-2 as the Athletics took the championship in five games. Eddie Collins had three hits, including two doubles, for the A's.

1920 - The Chicago grand jury indictment adds the names of former featherweight boxing champ Abe Attell, Hal Chase, and Bill Burns as go-betweens in the 1919 World Series scandal. Ed Cicotte, Joe Jackson, Lefty Williams and Happy Felsch sign confessions, which they later recant.

1923 - Babe Ruth makes a postseason appearance in a New York Giants uniform as the Giants defeat the minor-league Baltimore Orioles 9-0. Ruth hits a home run over the right field roof at the Polo Grounds. The game is a benefit for destitute former Giants owner John Day.

1935 - Gabby Hartnett is selected by the BBWAA as the NL MVP, with Dizzy Dean the runner-up.

1945 - Branch Rickey announces the signing of Jackie Robinson by the Dodgers organization.

1974 - The Cubs trade sweet-swinging Billy Williams, a fixture at Wrigley Field for 16 years, to the A's for second baseman Manny Trillo and pitchers Darold Knowles and Bob Locker.

1979 - Billy Martin is involved in a barroom altercation with Joseph Cooper, a Minnesota marshmallow salesman. Cooper requires 15 stitches to close a gash in his lip.

1981 - The Los Angeles Dodgers beat New York 5-4 in the third game of the World Series, narrowing the Yankees' lead to 2-1.

1984 - Rick Sutcliffe, who was 16-1 for the Cubs after arriving from Cleveland two days before the June 15 trading deadline, is a unanimous choice as NL Cy Young Award winner.

1985 - John Tudor hurled a five-hit, 3-0 victory over the Kansas City Royals, giving the St. Louis Cardinals a 3-1 lead in the World Series.

1986 - Bruce Hurst's complete-game victory gave the Boston Red Sox a 4-2 win and 3-2 lead in the World Series against the New York Mets. Hurst scattered 10 hits with one walk and six strikeouts.1991: Mark Lemke hits his second triple of the night in the ninth inning and then scores on a close play on Jerry Willard's sacrifice fly for Atlanta's 3-2 win over the Twins.

1993 - In one of the most dramatic endings in World Series history, Joe Carter hits a three-run, ninth inning home run off Mitch Williams for an 8-6 win and Toronto's second straight World Championship. Paul Molitor, who hits .500 in 24 at bats, is MVP while Philadelphia's Lenny Dykstra, who hit .348 with four home runs, did everything except pitch.

1996 - The Braves jump to a 6-0 lead, but the Yankees mount their biggest comeback in World Series history with a three-run home run by Jim Leyritz that ties the game in the eighth inning. After Bernie Williams is intentionally walked with runners on first and second in the 10th, Steve Avery walks Wade Boggs to bring in the deciding run.

1997 - The Marlins move within one win of their first World Series title as Moises Alou hits his second three-run home run of the Series against Cleveland's Orel Hershiser. Rookie Livan Hernandez pitches into the ninth inning of Game Five and Florida holds off the Indians 8-7.

San Francisco Giants at Philadelphia Phillies (-158, 7)

The Giants had their chance to finish off the Phillies at home in San Francisco with Tim Lincecum on the mound against a less-than-100-percent Roy Halladay. Now they have to go on the road to Philadelphia and win one of the final two games for a trip to the World Series.

Facing the Gaints on Saturday is Roy Oswalt, who took the loss when he gave up a ninth-inning run in an ill-fated Game 4 relief appearance. However, in his Game 2 start, Oswalt went eight innings and struck out nine while allowing just three hits and one run.

Even if Oswalt can’t go all the way in Game 6, San Francisco could have a similarly tough time against the bullpen. The three runs charged to Oswalt and Chad Durbin in game 4 are the only runs allowed by the bullpen in 16 postseason innings. Ryan Madson struck out the side in the eighth on Thursday in Game 5 and Brad Lidge closed the door with ease in the ninth.

“We know as a group, it's not going to happen very often,” Madson said of being scored upon. “When it does, you just have to get through it and forget about it and get through the next day with all the confidence in the world. That's what we did today.”

              Pick: Phillies

                      Saturday, October 23

                      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
                      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Columbus Blue Jackets at Chicago Blackhawks (-205, 5.5)

It's only the first month of the season, but the Blue Jackets are already banged up. On the defensive front, Mike Commodore is out indefinitely due to a fracture in his left thumb and Kris Russell and Anton Stralman are also injured.

"It's more the other stuff, the passing, the battling all that stuff, taking hits," said Stralman, who missed two games with a shoulder problem. "We didn't really do that (in practice), so it's hard to say what that's going to feel like."

It did not feel good for the entire team on Friday night. The Blue Jackets are still a respectable 3-3-0 for the season, but they are coming off a 6-2 blowout loss to Calgary in the first of back-to-back games.

Adding insult to injury (or the other way around), it has been confirmed that left wing Ethan Moreau sustained two broken bones in his right hand while blocking a shot on Wednesday. He needs surgery and will be out four to six weeks.

                      Pick: Blackhawks and Over

Pittsburgh Penguins at St. Louis Blues (106, 5.5)

The Penguins' 5-3 record is not going to blow anyone away, but they have won four in a row and five of their last six.

That's despite some significant starting goalie issues. Marc-Andre Fleury made his first start since October 13 on Thursday and allowed four goals on 14 shots in a home loss to Toronto. Backup Brent Johnson, not surprisingly, is expected to start on Saturday. Johnson is 4-0 this season and boasts a 1.49 GAA and a .950 save percentage.

What else does Pittsburgh have going for it? Well, count 'em up. The team is 3-0 on the road this season and has outscored opponents 17-8 during the four-game streak. Sidney Crosby is atop the league in points and Mark Letestu atop the league in points among rookies.

Furthermore, as if the streaking Johnson needs any help, defenseman Brooks Orpik is expected to return to the lineup on Saturday after missing six games with a groin strain.

                      Pick: Penguins

                      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                        Daily Sports Roundup: October 23

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Tigers meet the Tigers in a ranked matchup, the Horned Frogs host the Air Force, and MLB continues its march to the World Series.

                        Colliding on the gridiron . . .

There are four ranked matchups on the college football schedule for Saturday, with No. 14 Nebraska (-5.5) at No. 17 Oklahoma State, No. 10 Wisconsin at No. 13 Iowa (-6), No. 3 Oklahoma (-3) at No. 18 Missouri, and No. 6 LSU at No. 5 Auburn (-6). LSU (7-0 SU, 3-4 ATS) played cupcake opponent McNeese State last week, settling for a 32-10 home win. Jarrett Lee threw for just 75 yards for LSU in that victory, with no touchdowns and no interceptions, while Michael Ford ran for 86 yards and two scores. Auburn (7-0 SU, 4-3 ATS) rolled to a 65-43 home win over Arkansas in their last contest. Cam Newton threw for one touchdown and ran for another three for Auburn in that matchup.

Other games involving Top 25 teams on the Saturday slate: Syracuse at No. 20 West Virginia (-13.5), Duke at No. 23 Virginia Tech (-27), Purdue at No. 11 Ohio State (-24), No. 8 Michigan State (-6) at Northwestern, Iowa State at No. 22 Texas (-21), Mississippi at No. 21 Arkansas (-9.5), Washington State at No. 12 Stanford (-36.5), Colorado State at No. 9 Utah (-30.5), No. 19 South Carolina (-12.5) at Vanderbilt, No. 7 Alabama (-16.5) at Tennessee, UAB at No. 24 Mississippi State (-20), North Carolina at No. 25 Miami (-6.5), Washington at No. 15 Arizona (-6.5), and Air Force at No. 4 TCU (-18.5). The Horned Frogs (7-0 SU, 2-4 ATS) pounded BYU 31-3 at home in their most recent game.

As well, the CFL closes out Week 17 of its schedule on Saturday with Toronto (7-8 SU, 7-8 ATS) at Winnipeg (4-11 SU, 9-6 ATS) and Saskatchewan (9-6 SU, 8-7 ATS) at Edmonton (5-10 SU, 6-9 ATS). Oddsmakers have the Blue Bombers pegged as 5.5-point home favorites in that first matchup, with the total set at 49.5 points. The Riders are then 2.5-point road favorites in the later game, with that contest's total listed at 50.5.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The Giants and Phillies will continue the NLCS in Philadelphia on Saturday, with Jonathan Sanchez (0-1, 2.02 ERA in the playoffs) taking on Roy Oswalt (1-1, 3.29 ERA in the playoffs) in Game 6 of the series. Lefthander Sanchez was tagged with the loss in Game 2 of the series, surrendering three runs (two earned) on five hits over six innings, while fanning seven. Righthander Oswalt beat Sanchez in Game 2, holding the Giants to just one run on three hits over his eight innings of work while striking out nine batters. Oswalt also took a loss in relief on Wednesday, surrendering one run in the ninth inning.

                        Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, the NHL has a busy slate of 13 games scheduled for Saturday, with the Rangers at Boston, Atlanta at Washington, Toronto at Philadelphia, Montreal at Ottawa, Buffalo at New Jersey, the Islanders at Florida, Nashville at Dallas, Pittsburgh at St. Louis, Columbus at Chicago, Los Angeles at Colorado, Carolina at Phoenix, San Jose at Edmonton, and Anaheim at Detroit. The Ducks got a game-winning goal from Ryan Getzlaf on Thursday night to pick up a 3-2 road win over the Flyers. Backup netminder Curtis McElhinney made 40 saves for Anaheim in that contest. The Red Wings topped the Flames 4-2 at home on Thursday, with Jimmy Howard making 34 saves on the day.

                              Saturday, October 23

Oswalt beat Giants 6-1 in Game 2 of series (one run/eight IP), but lost in relief in Game 4; he is 2-0, 2.40 as a starter vs Giants with Philly- if you add up the starts he made vs SF while pitching for Astros this year, he is 2-3, 2.83 in five starts (Astros scored four runs in three games for him). Sanchez is 2-1, 2.37 against Phillies this year after losing Game 2 (gave up three runs/six IP). Phillies won NL last two years; they need win here to force Game 7 tomorrow night.
