    Daily Sports Roundup: October 19

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The NLCS between Philly and the Giants resumes in San Francisco, while the Yankees play host to the Rangers in Game 4 of their ALCS.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .
The NLCS shifts to San Francisco on Tuesday, with Game 3 between the Giants and Phillies. San Francisco will give the ball to Matt Cain (0-0, 0.00 ERA in the playoffs) in that contest, while Philadelphia counters with Cole Hamels (1-0, 0.00 ERA in the playoffs). Righthander Cain had to settle for a no-decision in his NLDS outing against the Braves, surrendering one unearned run on seven hits over his 6 2-3 innings of work in that game. Lefthander Hamels dazzled the Reds in his only outing of the NLDS, giving up just five hits over his nine shutout innings. Hamels struck out nine in that win.

Meanwhile, it's Game 4 of ALCS between the Rangers and Yankees in New York on Tuesday night. The Yankees will try their luck with A.J. Burnett on the mound on Tuesday. Righthander Burnett has yet to pitch in the playoffs this year, and the team was just 2-8 in his last 10 trips to the mound during the regular season. The Rangers will turn to Tommy Hunter (0-1, 4.50 ERA in the playoffs) for Tuesday's game. Righthander Hunter lost to the Rays in the ALDS, giving up three runs over four innings.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .
As well, there are four games on the ice around the National Hockey League on Tuesday, with Boston at Washington, Vancouver at Minnesota, Carolina at San Jose, and Calgary at Nashville. The Flames improved to 2-2-0 on the season on Saturday night with a 5-3 home win over rival Edmonton. Alex Tanguay scored twice for Calgary in that contest, with Brendan Morrison, Jarome Iginla, and Niklas Hagman providing one goal each. Miikka Kiprusoff made 27 saves. The Predators fell 3-2 at home in overtime in their last game on Saturday, blowing the 2-0 lead they held through two periods. J.P. Dumont and Jordin Tootoo scored for Nashville, and Anders Lindback stopped 31 shots.

Bettors' best friend: Tuesday's wagering tips

      Lines to watch
The Phillies opened as a -115 road favorite at San Francisco but are now listed at -120 at some books.

      Who’s hot
Philadelphia Phillies are 22-5 in their last 27 road games.

The under is 7-1 in the last eight Washington Capitals’ games.

      Who’s not
Nashville Predators have lost six of their last eight meetings with the Calgary Flames.

Minnesota Wild have lost eight of their last 10.

      Key stat
38.1 – Percentage of power plays the Minnesota Wild have converted on through four games, with eight of their 10 total goals coming with the man advantage.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked
Juan Uribe (wrist) San Francisco Giants – Uribe was a late scratch from Sunday’s game and is officially listed as questionable after jamming his left wrist on a headfirst slide into second base on Saturay. He was replaced by Edgar Renteria. Uribe was 2-for-18 at the plate in the playoffs after belting 24 home runs in the regular season.

      Game of the day
Philadelphia Phillies at San Francisco Giants

      Notable quotable
"Don't throw it down and in. The last three balls that he hit are in the same exact spot. Just bad pitches. I mean, throwing it right into his bat, pretty much. If you can make your pitches, you are going to do well. But if you miss down and in, that's pretty much where he's hitting them." – Roy Oswalt’s advice to Philadelphia’s Game 3 starter Cole Hamels about dealing with the red-hot Cody Ross. Ross has broken up a no-hitter with a home run in each of his last three games.

      Notes and tips
The Philadelphia Phillies aren’t going to change their batting routines at San Francisco’s AT&T Park even though they’re hitting just .199 and averaging 3.2 runs per game there since 2008. The Phillies are focusing on hitting line drives and ground balls in batting practice at San Francisco, just like they do at home, instead of aiming for the bleachers. A batting practice group of Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins and Shane Victorino hit exactly zero home runs in Monday’s BP session.

The Calgary Flames have already seen enough of Olli Jokinen on the top line with captain Jarome Iginla and Alex Tanguay. Jokinen, who had one assist and 17 shots on goal with the No. 1 unit and was brought back to Calgary specifically to play with Iginla, is being dropped in favor of Matt Stajan.

Minnesota Wild coach Todd Richards put his team through a nasty bag skate during Sunday’s workout to get them ready for Tuesday’s game against the Vancouver Canucks. Richards wasn’t please with the club’s 1-2-1 start and veteran center John Madden said that he’s never experienced a punishment skate like that in 15 years of pro hockey.

        Tuesday's six-pack

-- Former Indians’ manager Eric Wedge (561-573, one division title, one 2nd place in 7 years with Tribe) is your new manager in Seattle.

-- Mike Leach would be good choice to be football coach for Minnesota Golden Gophers; last time they finished higher than 4th in Big 11 was way back in 1986.

-- According to msnbc.com, the Brett Favre Wrangler ad didn’t run on any NFL games Sunday, so at least one good thing came out of the Favre/text message debacle. The commercial did air 10 times Sunday on non-sports shows.

-- Carolina is going back to Matt Moore as starting QB, with Jimmy Clausen going back to the bench.
Our last two notes both come from EJ Hradek at espn.com

-- Florida allowed 34.1 shots on goal per game LY, most in NHL; so far this year, and I know its still early, they’ve reduced that number to 26.1. That’s very good.

-- Colorado Avalanche has been outscored 3-2 on its 18 power plays so far this season. That’s very bad.

Tuesday's List of 13: Our NFL List of 13.........

        13) Texans—Cablevision/FOX dispute has gotten out of hand; people in NYC/Philly couldn’t watch NFC games or the NLCS this weekend, as greedy corporate rat bastards fight over how to divide their fortunes. Big winner this weekend was probably DirecTV.

        12) Titans—You think of Vince Young, and then you think of the old college football movie, The Program, where the responsibility of QB’ing a bigtime college program almost caused the main character to suffer a breakdown. Has this ever happened in the NFL? Is Young a candidate? Not easy living your whole life in the spotlight. I think he’s a terrific player, but lot of pressure on him.

        11) Packers—Need to beat the Vikings, then desperately need a bye week to get healthier. Players win games, and lot of Green Bay’s better players are banged up.

        10) Dolphins—Road team is 5-0 in their games, with Miami 0-2 at home. If Bill Parcells leaves the organization, does that put coach Sparano (who once wrote Brian Garvey a recruiting letter for U of New Haven) on the hot seat?

        9) Falcons—Not sure why, but offense is in ashcan right now. Matt Ryan grew up in Philly, but hasn’t beaten the Eagles yet.

        8) Eagles—Its not a QB controversy if both guys are good. Its only a problem if neither one of them is any good.

        7) Patriots—I still laugh every time I think about the Saints drafting Marc Bulger 30 spots ahead of where the Patriots drafted Tom Brady. IN THE SIXTH ROUND!!!! How much money do these teams on scouting? Millions? Yikes.

        6) Ravens—I can see this team in Jerry World in February.

        5) Giants—Why don’t more Giant fans think Tom Coughlin is a really good coach? Take a look at his record sometime. Not the most personable guy, but a damn fine coach. Appreciate him, people.

        4) Saints—They’re still the defending champ, they still have #9 under center and until someone knocks them off their perch…….

        3) Jets—Have done just about everything asked of them so far, so have to rank them this high. Not sold on Sanchez being able to win a tough playoff game, but maybe their defense is so good he won’t have to win one, just not lose one.

        2) Colts—I wish they’d just give Peyton Manning the title of offensive coordinator, just for accuracy sakes. The dude on the with the laminated playchart works hard, I’m sure, but #18 runs every aspect of that offense.

        1) Steelers—If I’m Roethlisberger, I’ve answered my last non-football question of the season. His teammates carried him for a month, now time for Big Ben to return the favor.

Philadelphia Phillies at San Francisco Giants [FOX | 4:15 PM ET]

PHILLIES: (-114, O/U 6.5) Philadelphia won when the absolutely had to, as Roy Oswalt pitched them to a nice win in Game 2 to even the NLCS at 1-1. The prohibitive favorite, it appears that Philadelphia has a competitive series on their hand. The Phillies go out on the road for the next few games of this series, and they are 46-36 SU this year on the road. Overall, the Phillies are +12.08 and +2.83 units respectively this season. Lefty Cole Hamels will make the road start today, as he is 13-11 SU with an ERA of 2.94 and a WHIP of 1.15 this year. The Phillies are 16-2 in their last 18 playoff games as a favorite. Philadelphia is 22-5 in their last 27 road games. The Phillies are 6-2 in their last 8 games against a starter with a WHIP less than 1.15. The Phillies are 11-4 in their last 15 road games against a right-handed starter. Philadelphia is 6-1 in Hamels' last 7 starts as a favorite. The Phillies are 5-1 in Hamels' last 6 starts following a Quality Start in his last appearance.

Phillies are 11-1 last 12 road games against a team with a home winning percentage greater than .600%.
Under is 6-0 last 6 road games with the total set at 6.5 or lower.

            Key Injuries - None Reported.

            Projected Score: 2

GIANTS: San Francisco finally didn't play an exciting game, as they weren't involved in a 1 run game for the first time this postseason. San Francisco played quite slopping in a 1-6 loss in Philadelphia to tie up the NLCS at 1-1. The Giants are excited to be back at home for the NLCS, and San Francisco fans have been patient for a postseason series just like this. San Francisco is 50-33 SU this year at home, and have an opportunity to sieze the NLCS at home over the next few games. San Francisco is +16.79 and -2.74 units both SU and on the RL this season. Pitcher Matt Cain will make the home start, as he is 13-11 with an ERA of 3.05 and a WHIP of 1.09 this year. The Giants are 4-1 in their last 5 games as an underdog. San Francisco is 24-9 in their last 33 games following a loss. The Giants are 21-8 in their last 29 games with the total set at 6.5 or lower. The Giants are 6-0 in Cain's last 6 starts following a team loss in their previous game. San Francisco is 6-1 in Cain's last 7 starts following a Quality Start in his last appearance. The Giants are 13-4 in Cain's last 17 starts against the National League East.

Giants are 5-0 last 5 games following an off day.
Under is 9-0 last 9 games when their opponent scores 5 runs or more in their previous game.

Key Injuries - 3B Juan Uribe (wrist) is questionable.

Projected Score: 4 (SIDE of the Day)

Texas Rangers at New York Yankees [TBS | 8:07 PM ET]

RANGERS: Texas won't be able to start Cliff Lee tonight, but that doesn't change the fact that this team believes they are a team of destiny. In reality, who can argue with them? The Rangers have accomplished many franchise firsts this year, and with the guidance of Coach Washington and Nolan Ryan anything is possible. Texas is 94-75 SU this season, including 42-42 SU on the road this year. The Rangers are -0.11 and -18.58 units both both SU and on the RL respectively this season. Right hander Tommy Hunter will make the road start tonight, as he is 13-5 with an ERA of 3.75 and a WHIP of 1.25 this season. The Rangers are 5-0 in their last 5 road games against a team with a winning record. Texas is 9-3 in their last 12 games against the American League East. The Rangers are 23-9 in Hunter's last 32 starts on grass. Texas is 16-7 in Hunter's last 23 starts overall. The Rangers are 3-7 in Hunter's last 10 road starts against a team with a winning record.

Rangers are 11-4 last 15 games against a team with a winning record.
Under is 5-0 last 5 playoff road games.

            Key Injuries - None Reported.

            Projected Score: 4

YANKEES: There is little not to like about postseason baseball in New York. Yankees fans love it, and so do many within the MLB league offices. New York is hosting Game 4 of the ALCS tonight, in a crucial game that can get one team a step closer to the World Series. New York is 53-29 SU at home this year, easily one of the most formidable home teams in baseball. The Yankees are -1.77 and +12.96 units both SU and on the RL overall this season. Pitcher A.J. Burnett will make the home start tonight, and everyone associated with New York is nervous. Burnett is a talented pitcher, but he's as erratic as they come. Burnett is 10-15 SU this season, with an ERA of 5.26 and a WHIP of 1.51 overall. The Yankees are 4-1 in their last 5 games against a team with a winning record. New York is 6-2 in their last 8 League Championship home games. The Yankees are 61-22 in their last 83 home games against a right-handed starter. New York is 1-4 in their last 5 games against the American League West. The Yankees are 5-17 in Burnett's last 22 starts on grass. New York is 0-6 in Burnett's last 6 starts following a Quality Start in his last appearance. The Yankees are 0-11 in Burnett's last 11 starts against a team with a winning record.

Yankees are 8-1 last 9 playoff home games.
Over is 9-3 last 12 home games against a team with a winning record.

            Key Injuries - None Reported.

            Projected Score: 6

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Texas Rangers at New York Yankees (N/A)

No matter what happens in this series, don’t expect to see Vladimir Guerrero anywhere else but the No. 4 spot in Ron Washington’s lineup card.

Vladdy has had his problems at the dish, hitting just .214 with one RBI in the playoffs and has only one hit in the ALCS against the Yankees. What makes it worse is that everybody is pitching around No. 3 hitter Josh Hamilton to get to Guerrero, who hasn’t been able to take advantage. Meanwhile, Nelson Cruz is 11-for-27 with three postseason home runs batting fifth.

"That's the way I ran the lineup all year, and it's going to stay that way," Rangers manager Ron Washington told reporters of Guerrero’s spot in the order. "A guy of Vlad's stature, he's only one swing away from doing damage. He's our No. 4 hitter and he's going to stay that way."

Guerrero hit .300 with 29 home runs and 115 RBIs in the regular season. He’ll be up against Yanks starter A.J. Burnett on Tuesday.

            Pick: Rangers

Philadelphia Phillies at San Francisco Giants (+105, 6.5)

Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins found his groove at the plate just in time to head back to his old stomping ground.

Rollins grew up in Oakland and will have a big crowd of family and friends on hand after he went 2-for-3 with a walk and a bases-clearing double in Sunday’s 6-1 win over Philadelphia on Sunday.

"That's going to be fun," Rollins told reporters. "I love playing in front of my family, friends and also the fans. They crack on me, I crack back. But it was never in a situation like this. Do they boo me?"

The 2007 NL MVP missed three weeks in September due to a pulled hamstring and still isn’t completely healthy. Before breaking out in Game 2, he had just one hit in 15 trips to the plate in the playoffs and was dropped from his usual leadoff spot to the No. 6 hole in the order.

            Pick: Phillies

Cole Hamels, Philadelphia Phillies vs. Matt Cain, San Francisco Giants

            Cole Hamels (12-11, 3.06 ERA)

Hamels has a tough act to follow after Roy Halladay and Roy Oswalt took the hill in the first two games of the series, but those two aces have been a factor in Hamels’ bounce-back season.

Phillies manager Charlie Manuel says Hamels’ work ethic is much better since the two Roys joined the team and that Hamels has also added a cut fastball to his bag of tricks while bumping his velocity up a few clicks as well.

"He's wanted to put to rest that he was anything less than a superstar," Phillies closer Brad Lidge of the 2008 World Series MVP. "And he is a superstar. He worked his butt off this winter to come out this year to prove it, and that's what he's done. If he had anything left that wasn't mature, it's gone now. He's doesn't act anything close to 26."

Hamels came back with a strong regular season after a tough 2009 campaign. He only had 12 wins but set new career-bests in ERA (3.06) and strikeouts (211).

The lefty heads into Tuesday’s game with a 6-3 record and a 3.36 ERA in 11 playoff starts after chucking a five-hit shutout against the Reds on Oct. 10.

            Matt Cain (13-11, 3.14 ERA)
Pitching for the San Francisco Giants, Matt Cain knows a lot about pitching in pressure situations. The Giants averaged only 4.03 runs of support for him this year, so he has thrown in some tight games.

He’s expecting another tight, pressure-packed game when he squares off against Hamels on Tuesday.

"You try to take advantage of taking control of the game when you may have guys on base and counts aren't in your favor or whatever," Cain told reporters. "You just try to figure out ways to slow the game down to get back to the pace that you want it to be at to try to get the momentum back on your side instead of the hitter's advantage."

So far that seems to be working for him and if the Giants give him a few runs to work with, he’s lethal. Cain is 11-0 with a 2.35 ERA when San Francisco manages at least three runs while he’s on the hill.

Cain picked up a no-decision in his only playoff start, going 6 2/3 and allowing just a single unearned run in a 5-4 loss to Atlanta in the division series. The 10-day layoff will be the longest he’s pitched with in his career.

Vancouver Canucks at Minnesota Wild (+115)

Even the greats need a break.

Vancouver Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo got to put his skates up and relax this past weekend, getting the night off against the Carolina Hurricanes Sunday.

The Canucks rolled to the 5-1 victory behind backup Cory Schneider and are expected to have their No. 1 in net when they face the Wild on the road Tuesday night.

"It's very important," center Ryan Kesler told reporters of the team’s win. "It takes a lot of pressure off of Lui, not to have to start every night."

A rejuvenated Luongo should help Vancouver’s cause with the team playing four of five games on the road during this current stretch. The Canucks are 9-3 in their last 12 meetings with the Wild including a 4-2 record versus Minnesota last season.

                Pick: Vancouver

Carolina Hurricanes at San Jose Sharks (-203)

After a long layoff and disappointing home opener, the San Jose Sharks are anxious to get back on the ice. They’ll get that wish against the Carolina Hurricanes at home Tuesday night.

The Sharks, who had a week between games before Saturday’s 4-2 loss to the Atlanta Thrashers, were flat in their home debut, totaling just nine shots in the third period and allowing the Thrashers to score twice for the win.

“It was role-reversal really,” coach Todd McLellan told the San Jose Mercury News. “I thought we’d get better as the night went on but I think exactly the opposite happened. Perhaps things were a little bit too easy for us early in the game and then we weren’t prepared to buckle down and work hard enough to win the game.”

San Jose is 1-1-1 to start the 2010-11 season, mimicking last season’s slow start. Traditionally, the Sharks have had trouble with the Hurricanes, splitting their last six meetings. However, in that span, the home team is 4-2 and owns a 7-2 record in the last nine head-to-head meetings between these teams.

                Pick: San Jose
