Bettors’ best friend: Sunday’s wagering tips

Lines to keep an eye on

The Ducks opened as -135 favorites against the Coyotes, but the line has dropped to -127.

The Eagles opened as -3 favorites against the Falcons but the line now stands at -2 with Philadelphia confirming that Michael Vick will not start at quarterback.

The Cleveland at Pittsburgh line opened at -11.5 and it has jumped around between that number and -14.5. It is currently at -13.5.

    Weather to watch

Giants at Phillies: A 14 mph wind is expected to blow from the third base line out to right field.

Dolphins at Packers: There is a slight 20 percent chance of rain and a 10 mph wind is expected.

Ravens at Patriots: A 13 mph wind is expected.

Saints at Bucs: There is just a 10 percent chance of rain.

Raiders at 49ers: There is a 30 percent chance of showers.

Jets at Broncos: There is a 20 percent chance of showers.

Colts at Redskins: There is a slight 20 percent chance of rain but evening skies should be clear.

    Who’s hot

The Phillies are 11-1 in Roy Oswalt’s last 12 starts

The Giants are 5-1 in their last six road games and 6-1 in Jonathan Sanchez’s last seven starts.

The over is 22-5 in the Ducks last 27 home games.

The over is 6-0 in New England’s last six overall.

The Jets are 7-1 ATS in their last eight road games and 8-2 ATS in their last 10 against the AFC.

    Who’s not

The Ducks are 1-4 in their last five overall.

The Canucks are 1-4 in their last five overall.

The Eagles are 1-5 ATS in their last six home games.

The Seahawks are 3-12-1 ATS in their last 16 games against teams with winning SU records.

The Saints are 0-4 ATS in their last four overall and 3-13 ATS in their last 16 against the NFC.

    Key stat

6.5 – Yards per carry averaged this season by Kansas City running back Jamaal Charles, No. 1 in the NFL among running backs (with at least 50 carries). Charles is going up against a Houston defense that is just one of two units in the NFL giving up more than 400 yards per game.

    Injuries that shouldn’t be overlooked

Wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez did not travel with the Colts to Washington, nor did running back Donald Brown. Gonzalez’s absence could be overcome since Pierre Garcon has returned, but Brown would have been relied upon if Joseph Addai (questionable with a shoulder injury) can’t go. While this is good news for the Washington defense, the Redskins may miss safety LaRon Landry (wrist) in their effort to stop Peyton Manning and the air attack.

    Biggest games on the slate

San Francisco Giants at Philadelphia Phillies (-164, 6)

Baltimore Ravens at New England Patriots (-2.5, 44.5)

    Notable quotable

“We got manhandled by a damn good team. And everything we said we wanted to do, we didn’t do. Penalties, turnovers, we couldn’t convert on third down, couldn’t control the tempo of the game.” – New England quarterback Tom Brady on last year’s blowout loss at home to Baltimore in the playoffs. The Patriots get another shot at the Ravens on Sunday.

“I have a lot of respect for them. They play really hard. They’re very well coached. They have a very physical front, a very emotional team. They play with energy and enthusiasm for what they’re doing. Once they get fired up, it’s tough to calm them down. We haven’t played a full 60-minute game yet. That’s what it’s going to take against these guys this week. If it’s dink and dunk and score touchdowns, I’m fine with dinking and dunking. I don’t care, whatever it takes to get the ball in the endzone. If we hand it off every play, I’m fine with that. We have to be able to score points.” – Brady on this week’s game against Baltimore.

    Tips and notes

At 2-3, the Broncos need something to get them going, especially with an unfavorable matchup on Sunday. Denver’s 25th-ranked run defense is going up against a Jets rushing offense that is No. 1 in the NFL at 165.2 yards per game. Head coach Josh McDaniels issued a challenge of sorts heading into the AFC showdown. “I'm not calling our team a team that went in there and laid down or anything like that, but when you give up a certain number or rushing yards and don't rush the football very well, there's reason to say they were the tougher team. That was the case last Sunday, and we'll see if that's the case this Sunday or not.”

Michael Vick has not been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons, but Philadelphia head coach Any Reid updated his quarterback’s status on Saturday and the news wasn’t good. Vick will be the emergency QB on Sunday, not only behind starter Kevin Kolb on the depth chart, but also behind rookie Mike Kafka. So much for Vick getting a shot at his former team.

Carolina left wing Sergei Samsonov missed the first two games of this season due to a neck injury but he returned to the lineup on Thursday. Samsonov made an immediate impact with a goal against Ottowa, only to see the Hurricanes go down 3-2. The 31-year-old tallied 14 goals and 15 assists in 29 games last season.

Payoff pitch: today's Best Mound Matchup
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jonathan Sanchez, San Francisco Giants vs. Roy Oswalt, Philadelphia Phillies

      Jonathan Sanchez (13-9, 3.07 ERA)

The Giant’s don’t have two-time Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum going for them on Sunday, but they might not lose too much in the way of their starting pitching. If anything at all.

Sanchez had a breakout season for San Francisco. In two previous years as a starter, he recorded ERAs of 5.01 and 4.24. That number plunged to 3.07 in 2010 and he also reached a double-digit win total (13) for the first time. Sanchez struck out 205 batters against 96 walks.

It was full steam ahead for the southpaw in his first career playoff appearance earlier this week against the Braves. In a critical Game 3 in Atlanta with the series tied 1-1, Sanchez went 7 1/3 innings and allowed just two hits and one run while striking out 11. He did not get the win due to a bullpen collapse, but the Giants still bounced back to win the game and—one day later—the series.

Another encouraging sign for San Francisco? Sanchez was absolutely awesome against the Phillies during the regular season. He won both of his starts and allowed only five hits and two runs while striking out 13 in 13 innings of work.

      Roy Oswalt (21-10, 2.44 ERA)

This is why the Phillies went out and got Oswalt before the trade deadline; to step up in the postseason and to help them win another World Series title following their 2008 triumph.

Oswalt was unspectacular in last week’s Game 2 victory over the Reds, going five innings and allowing five hits, including two homers, and four runs (three earned). However, Oswalt still has outstanding numbers for his postseason career. In eight starts and nine total appearances he is 4-0 with a 3.83 ERA and 37 strikeouts in 51 2/3 innings.

In compiling a 21-10 record and 2.44 ERA this season, Oswalt made four starts against the Giants, more than he made against any other team except the Nationals. The righty went 1-3 and gave up 25 hits and 10 runs in 27 innings (3.33. ERA).

Going with Roy Halladay in Game 1 was a no-brainer, as it would have been for any team in the league. Choosing between Oswalt and Cole Hamels for Games 2 and 3, however, had to be a tough call. But perhaps manager Charlie Manuel considered this: in his career at Citizens Bank Park, Oswalt is 9-0 with a 2.10 ERA.

      This Day in Baseball
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On October 17 in Baseball History...

1911 - The Philadelphia Athletics scored twice in the 11th inning to beat the New York Giants, 3-2, in Game 3 of the World Series. Frank Baker hit a home run in the ninth inning off Christy Mathewson to tie the score, 1-1. Baker was tagged with the nickname "Home Run" for his exploits.

1960 - The National League formally awarded franchises to the New York Metropolitan Baseball Club, Inc., headed by Joan Payson, and a Houston group headed by Judge Roy Hofheinz, Craig Cullinan, and R.E. Smith.

1976 - On a cold Sunday night, the Reds gang up on Catfish Hunter for three runs, but the Yankees battle back to tie it up. With two outs in the ninth inning, Yanks shortstop Fred Stanley throws Griffey's easy grounder into the dugout. A walk and a Tony Perez single follow and the Yanks lose the second World Series game 4-3.

1978 - The Yanks win their fourth straight game, 7-2, to clinch their second consecutive World Championship over the Dodgers. Brian Doyle and Series MVP Bucky Dent have three hits apiece.

1979 - Willie Stargell's two-run homer gave the Pirates a 4-1 triumph over the Baltimore Orioles and the World Series in seven games.

1982 - Robin Yount records his second four-hit game of the World Series to lead the Brewers to a 6-4 win in Game Five and give Milwaukee a 3-2 lead overall. Yount is the first player ever to have multiple four-hit games in one World Series.

1987 - The Minnesota Twins overpowered St. Louis, 10-1, in the opening game of the first indoor World Series. Dan Gladden's grand slam capped a seven-run fourth inning.

1989 - Minutes before Game 3 of the World Series between Oakland and San Francisco, an earthquake hit the Bay area. The game was postponed and the Series resumed 11 days later.

1990 - In the first extra-inning World Series game since 1986, the underdog Reds beat the A's 5-4 in ten innings to take a surprising 2-0 lead in the Series. Reds outfielder Billy Hatcher goes 4-for-4 to run his consecutive hit streak to seven, tying Thurman Munson's World Series record.

1991 - Brian Hunter's two-run home run in the first inning of Game Seven is all John Smoltz needs as he tosses a 4-0 shutout over Pittsburgh.

1992 - Tom Glavine goes the distance to give the Braves a 3-1 win over the Blue Jays in Game One of the World Series.

1993 - A five-run uprising in the third pushes the Phillies to a 6-4 win over Toronto in Game Two. Mitch Williams earns his only save of the Series.

1995 - The Cleveland Indians beat the Seattle Mariners, 4-0, in Game 6 of the American League championship series, winning their first pennant since 1954.

1996 - The Atlanta Braves had the biggest blowout in postseason history, beating St. Louis, 15-0, in Game 7 of the NL championship series to complete a comeback from a 3-1 deficit. The Cardinals became the only club to blow a 3-1 edge three times in the postseason.

Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
          --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Phoenix Coyotes at Anaheim Ducks (-127, 5.5)

The Ducks quacked under pressure again on Friday. Just two nights after an impressive 4-3 win over the Canucks, Anaheim squandered a two-goal, third-period lead and lost in a shootout to the visiting Thrashers.

Corey Perry was the goat of the game despite registering a goal and two assists. The team’s sniper took an ill-advised swing of his stick that resulted in a power-play goal and the start of an Atlanta comeback.

"We talked about it before the third period," Ducks goalie Jonas Hiller told the Orange County Register after the setback. "We talked in here about playing smart. About to keep pushing and not taking dumb penalties.

"It's not what we did out there. It can't happen."

Anaheim collected points for a second straight time but the mood in the Ducks locker room was a somber one.

"Usually one point is good," Teemu Selanne said. "But a 4-2 lead in the third period, in your own barn. It just felt like a loss."

Anaheim needs to get better in its own end. The club is allowing 43 shots a night and opponents have lit the lamp four or more times in four of the Ducks five games this season.

          Pick: Over

Carolina Hurricanes at Vancouver Canucks (-180, 5.5)

A 4-1 loss in Los Angeles on Friday night left the Canucks with a mere four goals in their first seven games. That already matches their lowest four-game output from the entirety of last season.

"It's tough when you feel you're playing good, but not getting the goals you need from your chances," captain Henrik Sedin told the Vancouver Sun. "When we get chances, we're overdoing it; trying to get an empty net or an easy tap-in goal, which isn't going to happen in this league. We've been the better team. We've got to stay positive and be better where we need to be better."

Sixteen Vancouver players have not yet scored a goal this season. Among that bunch are Sedin, Ryan Kesler, Mikael Samuelsson, and Mason Raymond.

"I'm just trying to win hockey games," Kesler told the Sun. "It's not about me scoring goals. I'm just trying to give it my all out there and hope for the best."

Winning hockey games is not what the Canucks have been doing so far. They have lost two straight and are a disappointing 1-2-1 on the season.

          Pick: Hurricanes

                Daily Sports Roundup: October 17

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Steelers and their top QB take on the Browns, the Colts battle the Redskins, and the Giants and Phillies meet in Game 2 of the NLCS.

                Colliding on the gridiron . . .

Ben Roethlisberger returns to action for the Steelers (3-1 SU, 3-1 ATS) on Sunday afternoon as they play host to the Browns (1-4 SU, 2-3 ATS). The Steelers held the fort while Big Ben was suspended, but they're still coming off a 17-14 home loss to the Ravens in their most recent game. Rashard Mendenhall rushed for 79 yards and two scores in that contest. The Browns were doubled up 20-10 at home by the Falcons last week, and they're expected to turn to rookie quarterback Colt McCoy for Sunday's game against the rival Steelers. Oddsmakers have the Steelers pegged as big 13.5-point home favorites for Sunday's game, with the total for the matchup set at 37.5 points.

Also on the NFL's schedule for Sunday: Atlanta at Philadelphia (-3), Seattle at Chicago (-6.5), Miami at Green Bay, Detroit at the Giants (-10), New Orleans (-4.5) at Tampa Bay, San Diego (-8.5) at St. Louis, Kansas City at Houston (-4.5), Baltimore at New England (-3), Oakland at San Francisco (-6.5), the Jets (-3) at Denver, Dallas at Minnesota (-1.5), and Indianapolis (-3) at Washington. The Colts (3-2 SU, 3-2 ATS) got past Kansas City 19-9 at home last week, despite Peyton Manning throwing for just 244 yards with no touchdowns. The Redskins (3-2 SU, 3-1-1 ATS) slipped past Green Bay 16-13 at home last time out. The total for this Sunday night matchup is set at 44 points.

There are also two Canadian Football League games on the schedule for Sunday, with Winnipeg (4-10 SU, 8-6 ATS) at Montreal (10-4 SU, 7-7 ATS) and Calgary (10-4 SU, 9-5 ATS) at Saskatchewan (9-5 SU, 8-6 ATS). The Als are pegged as 12-point home favorites in the first game, and the Riders are 1.5-point home faves in the second game.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

It'll be Game 2 of the NLCS between the Giants and Phillies on Sunday night, with Roy Oswalt (0-0, 5.40 ERA) getting the ball at home against San Francisco's Jonathan Sanchez (0-0, 1.23 ERA). Righthander Oswalt took a no-decision against the Reds in the NLDS, surrendering four runs (three earned) on five hits over his five innings of work. Lefthander Sanchez is also coming off an NLDS no-decision, giving up one run on two hits over 7 1-3 innings of work against the Braves. Sanchez pitched in Philadelphia on August 19, earning the win after allowing just one run over eight innings. Oswalt faced the Giants on August 17, allowing three runs in his seven innings.

                Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are just two games on the National Hockey League's schedule for Sunday, with Phoenix at Anaheim and Carolina at Vancouver. The Hurricanes last played on Thursday night on the road against the Senators, falling 3-2. Sergei Samsonov and Eric Staal scored for Carolina that day, while Cam Ward stopped 36 of the 39 Ottawa shots.
