Bettors' best friend: Friday's wagering tips

    Line Moves

Cincinnati at Louisville: The hosts opened at +3.5 but that line has since fallen to +2.5 with many services.

Yankees at Rangers: The Rangers opened at +122 but heavy action on the visitors has since shift that line to +137 with books.

    Who’s hot

The over is 7-2-1 in the Sabres past 10 home games.

The over is 31-15-5 in the Canucks past 51 games.

The Yankees are 14-2 in their past 16 playoff games as a favorite.

    Who’s not

The Blue Jackets are 18-43 in their past 61 against the Central Division.

The Thrashers are 6-21 in their past 27 road games.

The Maple Leafs are 7-20 in their past 27 road games.

Louisville is 2-10 ATS in its past 12 Big East games.

    Key stat

3.8: Million dollar pay cut being taken by Patriots receiver Deion Branch, who the team reacquired from Seattle this week. His deal this season remains in the neighborhood of $5.8 million, but next year’s salary will be slashed to an incentive-based deal with a base figure of around $2.15 million, similar to the one the team pays receiver Wes Welker. The Patriots made the deal to bolster a receiving corps that had a gaping hole after trading future Hall of Famer Randy Moss. Branch, a former Super Bowl MVP, has just 13 catches for 112 yards and only one score this season.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Giants pitcher Tim Lincecum won’t just be battling Roy Halladay in Game 1 of the National League Championship Series. He also will be fighting off the effects of a blister on his pitching hand. The injury, which plagued him in the past, received extensive treatment after it resurfaced in his 14-strikeout gem against the Braves in Game 1 of the NLDS. Manager Bruce Bochy said the issue is “under control.” But with so few runs expected in this series, a blister issue could be a huge deal, especially if it sidelines Lincecum early in a game or forces him to skip a start.

    Game of the Day

New York Yankees at Texas Rangers (+137, 8)

    Notable quotes

"Sacked like a sacker. Call up Mr. Brady. Tell him to leave his hair to the guy who sings 'Baby.'” – Pop singer Justin Bieber making fun of New England QB Tom Brady’s hair cut resembling his own in a new video on his Web site.

    Tips and notes

If you think the frisky Kentucky Wildcats are poised to upset the high-flying South Carolina Gamecocks, think again. The Wildcats lost a big part of their game plan when it was announced on Thursday that running back Derrick Locke is expected to miss the game with a stinger in both shoulders. Locke is the No. 4 rusher in the SEC, averaging more than 95 yards per game. Without him, former quarterback and uber-athelete Randall Cobb will see heavy reps in the backfield.

Welcome back Jason Campbell. The Raiders quarterback lost his job earlier this season when his uninspired play led the way for spark plug Bruce Gradkowski to take charge of the offense. However, Gradkowski missed two days of practice this week after getting hurt last week and coach Tom Cable admitted that Campbell likely will be the man under center against the 49ers on Sunday. Behind Campbell, the Raiders completed a 35-27 upset of the Chargers as the former Auburn star went 13-for-18 with 159 yards and a score.

The Senators finally appear to have an injury go their way. For some reason, the team continues to insist on playing Pascal Leclaire between the pipes. About as effective as a traffic cone or trash can last season, Leclaire was relieved by Brian Elliot who guided the team to the postseason last year. This season, Ottawa appeared to want to rotate the two as a tandem, but Leclaire went down with a “lower body” injury against Carolina on Thursday and his status is uncertain. For Ottawa fans and bettors, the longer the better.

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Yankees at Texas Rangers (+137, 8)

The Rangers may actually wish to play this game in the Bronx.

Texas was 0-2 at home against the Rays in the ALDS, but a surprising 3-0 on the road. That trend, however, kept up across the board in the divisional round, as road teams were a staggering 11-4.

And the Yankees have no fear of Texas or its pitching. In eight games against the Rangers this season, the Bronx Bombers are hitting .269 with an absurd .373 on-base percentage. Overall, New York is hitting .314 as a team this postseason, with 11 extra-base hits in just three games.

Meantime, the Rangers are hitting just .241 against the Yankees this season, nearly 10 points lower than the league average.

“The Yankees lineup is deep,” Texas manager Ron Washington told reporters. “They will make sure that pitchers throw the ball over the plate, and if you don't, you can be in trouble. Because throughout the lineup, they have guys that can punch the ball out of the ballpark. Along with that, they have a lot of experience. They have speed. They can beat you a lot of ways.”

            And they will.

            Pick: Yankees

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CC Sabathia, New York Yankees vs. C.J. Wilson, Texas Rangers

            CC Sabathia (21-7, 3.18 ERA)

What else is there to say about the Yankees ace? Few players in any sport are actually worth more than $24 million per season, and he is one of them.

The 2007 American League Cy Young winner and 2009 ALCS MVP was one of the most dominant pitchers in the league again this season. Sabathia led the AL in wins and was second in innings pitched (237.2), sixth in strikeouts (197), seventh in ERA and 10th in WHIP (1.19).

In a 6-4 win over the Twins in Game 1 of the ALDS, he went six innings, giving up just three earned runs on five hits. Over the past two postseasons with the
Yankees, he is a combined 4-1, notching 39 strikeouts over that span.

The past three years against the Rangers, the left-hander has gone 1-1 in three starts with a 2.84 ERA as the Rangers are hitting a mere .246 off of him over that span. In fact, if Sabathia is worried about anything, it’s too much rest.

“The last time I think I had a week or six days, and only threw one bullpen,” he told NewYorkYankees.com. “This time I threw two bullpens twice and flat ground twice and I'll do another flat ground today and last time I was a little too strong and tend to get out of whack and it's tough for me to throw strikes.”

Sabathia has seen the over hit in three of his past four starts, but is just 17-17 against the total this season.

            C.J. Wilson (15-8, 3.35 ERA)
Expect the Yankees to sit on plenty of pitches against Wilson, who led the American League with a staggering 93 walks over 204 innings.

Wilson, however, worked well with men on base, finishing 10th in the AL in ERA. And against the Tampa Bay Rays in the ALDS, he was dominant, giving up only a pair of hits over 6.1 innings as he struck out seven against only two walks in a 6-0 victory.

But Wilson has had his share of struggles against the Yankees this season. In three starts against the Bronx Bombers, he has an 0-1 record, giving up 11 runs over 14.1 innings and recording just 15 strikeouts against nine walks. Over that span, New York is hitting .300 against him.

"He can cut the ball. He can ride it inside to left-handers. He can sink it, and he's got a breaking ball and he has a changeup," Rangers manager Ron Washington told the Associated Press. "Each time he takes the baseball, he gets better. He's always ready for a challenge."

Overall, the under has been a very reliable bet in Wilson starts this year, as it has gone 3-1-1 the past five times he toed the rubber and has hit in 21 of his 33 starts this season.

            This Day in Baseball
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On October 15 in Baseball History...

1912 - On a cold day in Boston, the Giants catch up with Joe Wood's smoke, teeing off for six runs on seven hits before the 32,694 fans have settled down for Game Six. The 11-4 win evens the Series. Tris Speaker turns an unassisted double play in the eighth for Boston, the only one by an outfielder in World Series play.

1917 - The Chicago White Sox won the World Series when the New York Giants left home plate uncovered and Eddie Collins dashed home with third baseman Heinie Zimmerman chasing him in helpless pursuit.

1923 - Babe Ruth hits a first-inning home run in Game Six, but the Giants take a 4-1 lead into the eighth. The Giants walk in two runs before Bob Meusel raps a single that scores the go-ahead runs. Sam Jones holds off the Giants, and the Yankees have their first World Championship.

1925 - Kiki Cuyler's bases-loaded double in the eighth inning gave the Pittsburgh Pirates a 9-7 victory over Walter Johnson and the Washington Senators in Game 7 of the World Series, capping a comeback from a 3-1 deficit.

1946 - Enos Slaughter scored from first on a single to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 4-3 victory and the World Series title in the seventh game against the Boston Red Sox.

1964 - St. Louis takes an early lead in Game Seven as Lou Brock's fifth-inning home run triggers a second three-run frame and a 6-0 lead for Bob Gibson. Mickey Mantle, Clete Boyer and Phil Linz homer for New York, but it's not enough, as the Cards win 7-5.

1968 - Roger Nelson is the initial choice of the Royals in the AL expansion draft. Don Mincher is the first choice of the Seattle Pilots.

1970 - For the third time, the Orioles overcome a 3-0 deficit to bury the Reds, 9-3, and win the World Championship in five games. Brooks Robinson easily wins the World Series MVP award for his hitting and unbelievable fielding.

1972 - The A's win 2-1 as Joe Rudi clouts a home run and makes a game-saving catch to back up Catfish Hunter's pitching before a record Cincinnati crowd of 53,224. The A's take a 2-0 World Series advantage as the scene shifts to Oakland.

1974 - The surprise starter for the Dodgers in Game Three is Al Downing, but Catfish Hunter pitches Oakland to a 3-2 win.

1975 - Luis Tiant throws 163 pitches in winning his second game of the World Series against Cincinnati, 5-4, to even the Series after four games.

1977 - The Yankees win 4-2 to take a 3-1 World Series advantage over the Dodgers. Reggie Jackson doubles and homers, and Ron Guidry notches a four-hitter.

1978 - The Yankees pummel the Dodgers with 18 hits in Game Five to win 12-2. Bucky Dent, Mickey Rivers and Brian Doyle have three hits each.

1981 - Dave Righetti, Ron Davis and Goose Gossage combined on a 4-0 shutout of the Oakland A's to give the New York Yankees their 33rd American League pennant.

1982 - Willie McGee has two home runs to drive in four runs and makes a great catch to save another run in Game Three. Joaquin Andujar wins 6-2 despite having to leave the game after being hit by a line drive.

1986 - The Boston Red Sox capped one of the greatest comebacks in history by defeating the California Angels, 8-1, to win the American League pennant after trailing three games to one in the playoffs.

1986 - Ray Knight keyed a three-run ninth to tie the score, and the New York Mets won their third National League pennant by beating the Houston Astros, 7-6, in 16 innings in the longest postseason game.

1988 - With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Kirk Gibson hit a two-run, pinch-homer to give the Los Angeles Dodgers a 5-4 victory over Oakland in Game 1 of the World Series. Gibson, who did not start because of a strained left knee, limped around the bases as the Dodgers won one of the most dramatic games in Series history.

1997 - Mike Mussina pitches two-hit baseball for eight innings, but the Orioles can't score. Charles Nagy and three Indians relievers strand 14 Baltimore baserunners. Tony Fernandez homers in the 12th inning for the only run of the game as the Indians win the pennant for the second time in three years.

                Friday, October 15

                --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ice picks: Today's best NHL bets
                --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Islanders at Pittsburgh Penguins

All the Penguins do at home is lose.

Moving into their new arena this season, the Penguins have lost all three games at their home rink by a combined score of 10-7. Plenty of action, but each game was dropped by the slimmest of margins to the Flyers, Canadiens and Maple Leafs.

And things won’t be easy against the Islanders.

Pittsburgh – one of the most offensively talented teams in the league – likely will be without several defenseman on Friday.

Brooks Orpik missed the team’s 4-3 loss to the Maple Leafs with a groin injury which could keep him sidelined. Zybnek Michalek is out with a right shoulder injury he sustained on Wednesday against the Devils and Arron Asham remains shelved with a left shoulder injury he picked up during the preseason.

Meantime, Islanders center John Tavares could return for the game from a concussion he sustained earlier this year to bolster a team that has notched 11 goals in its first three games.

                Pick: Islanders.

Colorado Avalanche at New Jersey Devils (-146, 5.5)

Think about this: New Jersey has allowed 14 goals in four games, the second-highest total in the NHL, despite winning 1-0 in its most recent game. Yeesh.

Count us among those who believe the 1-0 overtime win against Buffalo was a fluke. The Devils defense has been getting bombed recently and are expected to be without backward skaters Anton Volchenkov (head), Mark Fraser (hand), Anssi Salmela (knee) and Bryce Salvador (concussion).

Meantime, the Avalanche skate into New Jersey touting 11 goals scored through only three games, including wins over Cup favorites Chicago and Detroit.

Overall, Colorado has seen 11 of its past 13 road games go over the total and New Jersey has had an even 2-2 mark against the number this season.

                Pick: Over.

                          Daily Sports Roundup: October 15

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Yankees take on the Rangers in the first game of the ALCS, while Louisville battles Cincinnati, and the Avs take the ice in New Jersey.

                          Colliding on the gridiron . . .

College football offers up one matchup on Friday, as Louisville hosts Cincinnati. The Cardinals (3-2 SU, 3-1 ATS) trounced Memphis 56-0 at home last time out, with quarterback Adam Froman throwing for 235 yards and four touchdowns for Louisville in that victory. Bilal Powell rushed for 204 yards and two scores for the Cardinals that day. The Bearcats (2-3 SU, 2-2 ATS) handled Miami-Ohio 45-3 at home in their last game, as QB Zach Collaros was good for 216 yards through the air and three touchdowns. Oddsmakers have Cincinnati as the 3-point favorite for Friday, with the total listed at 58.

As well, there's one Canadian Football League game on tap for Friday, with Hamilton at Toronto. The Tiger-Cats and Argonauts have identical 7-7 SU and 7-7 ATS records on the season as they battle for second place in the Eastern Division standings. The Tiger-Cats are pegged as slight 1.5-point road favorites for Friday night, with that total at 49.5.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The American League Championship Series gets underway on Friday night, with the Rangers hosting the Yankees in the first game of that best-of-seven set. CC Sabathia (1-0, 4.50 ERA in the playoffs) will get the ball for New York in Game 1; lefthander Sabathia picked up a win over the Twins in the ALDS, holding them to four runs (three earned) on five hits over six innings of work in his outing. The Rangers will counter Sabathia with C.J. Wilson (1-0, 0.00 ERA in the playoffs); lefthander Wilson beat the Rays once during the ALDS, holding them scoreless on two hits over his 6 1-3 innings.

                          Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Finally, there are seven games on the National Hockey League schedule for Friday, with Toronto at the Rangers, the Islanders at Pittsburgh, Chicago at Columbus, Montreal at Buffalo, Atlanta at Anaheim, Vancouver at Los Angeles, and Colorado at New Jersey. The Avalanche improved to 2-1-0 on the season with a 5-4 shootout win on the road over the Red Wings on Tuesday night. David Jones scored twice for Colorado in that victory, while Ryan O'Reilly and Daniel Winnik also found the back of the net for the Avs in regulation time. Backup netminder Peter Budaj stopped 24 of 28 shots in that contest.

Friday's List of 13: What I'm looking for this weekend........

                            13) Texas Rangers have lot of excellent hitters and veteran players who won’t be spooked by this big a stage; I’m expecting a good series against the Bronx Bombers.

                            12) Lot of serious starting pitching in NLCS, as Phillies try to become first team to win NL three years in a row since 1944.

                            11) Saints are scoring half as many points as this time LY; they have yet to win a game by more than five points. Can they get a road win and stay within striking distance of the first-place Falcons?

                            10) How do Michigan Wolverines bounce back from their loss to Sparty when Iowa visits the Big House Saturday?

                            9) Interested to see Wes Welker’s stats in his first game without Randy Moss getting double-teamed on other side of field. Can Deion Branch be much of a help after getting re-acquired this week?

                            8) South Carolina has beaten Kentucky 10 times in a row; now they visit Lexington after upsetting #1 Alabama, one of the biggest wins in school history; how good are these Gamecocks?

                            7) Bears averaged less than two yards per pass attempt in each of their last two games; Jay Cutler returns from his concussion Sunday. Interested to see how he does against a Seattle team that lost badly in both its road games so far.

                            6) Auburn OC Gus Malzahn used to have the same job at Arkansas; the Hogs come calling at Auburn Saturday. Figures to be an exciting game, after Tigers survived a 37-34 shootout with Kentucky last week.

                            5) Can Chargers finally win a road game? They’re special team have allowed four TDs and a safety in first three away games (all losses). San Diego signed its fifth long snapper of the season this week. Also curious to see how Rams bounce back from a bad day in Detroit last week.

                            4) Florida Gators lost last two games, now face old friend Dan Mullen and his Mississippi State Bulldogs. Gator QB Brantley is playing hurt, which means we could see more of the freshman QB from Venice, Mr Burton.

                            3) Steelers get Ben Roethlisberger back Sunday; he’ll be 4th QB to start a game for Pittsburgh this year, in only their fifth game. Colt McCoy could get his first NFL start in this game for the Browns.

                            2) Nebraska lost Big 12 title game to Texas LY by one thin second; Cornhuskers have deemed Saturday a “red-out”, basically meaning that this game is their Super Bowl. Going to be tough for Mack Brown to avoid his third loss of this young season.

                            1) Will Michael Vick play against his old team? Can Falcons win road game in a city where they've historically flopped? If Vick plays, this is going to be especially good theater.
