Yankees try to force Game 7 at Texas

In order to come back from a 3-1 deficit in a series, you have to cut the lead in half and take it one game at a time. Without the services of 1B Mark Teixeira in the lineup, the New York Yankees managed to do just that in Game 5 Wednesday night in the Bronx, as they beat the Texas Rangers 7-2 and sent the American League Championship Series back to Arlington for Friday night's Game 6.

Six of the nine members of the New York lineup scored at least one run, while five of the nine knocked in at least one, as the Yanks played long ball with the Texas pitching staff on Wednesday. Nick Swisher, Robinson Cano and Curtis Granderson all went yard, with Cano's blast his third in his last four games.

Yes, the Yankees finally looked like the Yankees for the first time in this series. They picked up nine hits, blasted three bombs, drew six walks, got six strong innings from southpaw CC Sabathia and nailed the door shut with three spotless frames from right-handers Kerry Wood and Mariano Rivera.

The Rangers had their chances though, outhitting the Bronx Bombers 13-9 in the game. However, the problem came with batting in scoring position, as Texas left a whopping 14 men on base over the course of the game. Shortstop Elvis Andrus led the way with three hits and a stolen base. Four of the top five batters in this lineup are still hitting at least .310 for the series.

The good news for Texas is that it is coming home, but the bad news is that it is just 1-3 so far in the postseason while playing there.

The one man that the Rangers took out though was the New York starter for Game 6, Phil Hughes. It marked the first time that Texas had beaten the right-hander in four career outings, as he was 2-0 with a perfect 0.00 ERA coming into the game. Hughes surrendered seven runs and 10 hits, walking three in just four horrifying innings of work in the Game 2 loss.

To make matters worse for Hughes, he did a horrible job holding base runners on. Both Andrus and Josh Hamilton swiped a pair of bases. The only man in the lineup that didn't reach base at least once against Hughes in Game 2 was DH Vladimir Guerrero.

Things were just awful for the Yankees that day, and Texas starter Colby Lewis pitched respectably. The righty allowed just two runs in 5 2/3 innings of work. He did walk three batters and gave up six hits, one of which was a solo homer to Cano.

Just as it was the first loss in Hughes' career against the Rangers, it was also the first win for this right-hander against the Yankees. Prior to this, Lewis was 0-2 with a 6.89 career ERA against the boys in pinstripes.

Lewis has now had seven straight starts with two earned runs or less, but his downfall is the distance in which he is able to go. He hasn't pitched into the seventh inning since September 21.

As was the case in Game 2, the MLB oddsmakers are having a tough time picking a favorite in this game. The best baseball money line you'll find on the board for the visitors is minus 108 at Bookmaker, while the best line as of Thursday afternoon on the hosts is 'even' at 5Dimes.

The 'total' has been lined at a flat nine across the board. Each of the five games in this series has featured at least eight runs, and 'over' bettors are 4-0-1 in the five clashes.

Lewis tries to pitch Rangers into World Series

          --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

          NEW YORK YANKEES
          at TEXAS RANGERS

ALCS Game 6, Texas leads series 3-2
          Friday, 8:05 p.m. EDT, Line: New York -115, Texas +105 Total: 9

The ALCS heads back to Arlington as the Rangers look to wrap things up and head to their first ever World Series. The pitching matchup is a rematch of Game 2 with Phil Hughes (18-8, 4.19 ERA) going up against Colby Lewis (12-13, 3.72 ERA).

Hughes had been dominant in his career against Texas (2-0, 0.00 ERA) until getting knocked around in Game 2. The right-hander surrendered seven runs on 10 hits and lasted just four innings as the Rangers won 7-2. The seven earned runs were the most Hughes had given up since May of 2009. His road numbers haven’t exactly been great this year, going 6-5 with a 4.25 ERA including that Game 2 start.

Lewis pitched well in Game 2, giving the Rangers 5.2 innings and allowing two runs on six hits while picking up the win. It was the first win in four attempts for Lewis in his career against the Yankees. He’s now 1-0 with a 2.30 ERA in his last three starts dating back to the regular season. Including the playoffs, Lewis has pitched well at home, going 7-4 with a 3.32 ERA. He’s given up two runs over 10.2 innings at home this postseason against the Rays and Yankees.

The following FoxSheets trends point toward a Texas victory:

Play On - Home teams when the money line is +125 to -125 (TEXAS) - with a starting pitcher whose strikes out 5 or more batters per start, with a hot starting pitcher- ERA less than 2.50 over his last 5 starts. (81-37 over the last 5 seasons.) (68.6%, +42 units. Rating = 3*).

Play On - Home underdogs with a money line of +100 or higher (TEXAS) - on a good fielding streak, 10 straight games with one or less errors, starting a pitcher who gave up <=2 earned runs in his last 2 outings. (69-47 over the last 5 seasons.) (59.5%, +34.5 units. Rating = 2*).

Oswalt tried to send NLCS to a seventh game

              --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS
              at PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES

NLCS Game 6, San Francisco leads series 3-2, Saturday, 3:55 p.m. EDT
Line: Philadelphia -160, San Francisco +150 Total: 7

After a gutsy performance by Roy Halladay on Thursday, the Phillies head home to host Game 6 of the NLCS with their backs still against the wall. Roy Oswalt (13-13, 2.76 ERA) tries to even the series against Jonathan Sanchez (13-9, 3.07 ERA). The pitching matchup is a rematch of Game 2, a 6-1 Philadelphia victory.

Oswalt was tremendous in that Game 2 start, throwing eight innings of one-run ball while only yielding three hits. He also struck out nine. It was the fifth start of the season for Oswalt against the Giants. He now stands at 2-3 with a 2.83 ERA against San Francisco in 2010. The three losses came as a member of the Astros (all against Tim Lincecum), while the wins have come with Philadelphia. Oswalt has now won his past eight starts and the Phillies are 12-2 in Oswalt’s 14 starts.

Sanchez took the loss in Game 2, giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits over six innings of work. He dropped to 3-2 lifetime against the Phillies in his career with a 2.57 ERA. The two earned runs in Game 2 were the most Sanchez has given up to Philadelphia in three starts this year. The left-hander is 5-6 on the road this year, including the playoffs, with a solid 2.75 ERA. The Giants have won 11 of his 18 road starts, which includes a 1-1 mark in the postseason.

The FoxSheets display a number of trends that favor the underdog Giants including these two:

Play Against - All favorites with a money line of -150 or more (PHILADELPHIA) - after 5 straight games where they had less than 10 hits, starting a pitcher who gave up 1 or less earned runs last outing. (40-33 over the last 5 seasons.) (54.8%, +36 units. Rating = 3*).

Play On - All underdogs with a money line of +100 or higher (SAN FRANCISCO) - poor baserunning team - averaging 0.5 or less SB's/game on the season, in October games. (48-31 over the last 5 seasons.) (60.8%, +37.8 units. Rating = 3*).

Preview: Giants (92-70) at Phillies (97-65)
                Game: 6
                Venue: Citizens Bank Park
                Date: October 23, 2010 3:57 PM EDT

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Roy Oswalt is right at home - pitching as a starter in a ballpark where he's never lost.

Back in a familiar role after an unsuccessful guest appearance as a reliever, Oswalt gets the ball for Game 6 on Saturday when the Phillies try to even the NL championship series against San Francisco.

Oswalt dominated the Giants in Game 2, but took the loss when he came out of the bullpen and allowed Juan Uribe's game-ending sacrifice fly in the ninth inning in Game 4.

Roy Halladay helped the Phillies avoid elimination with a gutsy effort pitching through a groin pull Thursday night, sending the series back to Philadelphia with the Giants ahead 3-2.

Now it's Oswalt's turn. He's 10-0 lifetime at Citizens Bank Park.

``You never are guaranteed anything,' Oswalt said Friday. ``Doesn't matter how good a team you have, you may not never get back in this situation. So when you are here, you try to do everything possible when you're here.'

For Oswalt, that means pitching whenever he's needed, including in relief on two days' rest. The three-time All-Star righty entered in the ninth with the score tied at 5 on Wednesday night. He allowed a pair of singles before Uribe's one-out fly to left ended it.

``Numbers, to me, are no big deal,' Oswalt said. ``I didn't want to get the loss for sure. But you never know when you're going to get back here. So that's one of the reasons I wanted to be in the game the other night. I don't know how much longer I'm going to play. But I may not get to this spot again. So I'm going to try to do everything possible to get to that final game.'

Jonathan Sanchez, the Game 2 loser, takes the mound for San Francisco. The Giants are looking for their first pennant since Barry Bonds led them to within six outs of the World Series title in 2002.

Sanchez gave up three runs - two earned - and five hits in six-plus innings last Sunday night. The tough lefty had dominated the Phillies in his five previous starts against them, not allowing more than four hits in any outing.

Sanchez beat San Diego on the final day of the regular season to lead San Francisco to the NL West title. He'd like one more clinching victory.

``It's going to be great to get to the World Series,' Sanchez said. ``Never been there. We've got a lot of guys on the team that have never been there, and to be able to do that, it's going to be something special for me.'

After Tim Lincecum outdueled Halladay in the opener, Oswalt threw eight superb innings in a 6-1 win.

``I pitched in Houston. It's small there, too,' Oswalt said. ``It doesn't really matter the size. Don't really think about it when you're on the mound. You think of making them hit it on the ground or try to not let them hit it on the sweet spot of the bat, and if you can do that, you're usually pretty successful.'

This will be Oswalt's sixth start against the Giants this year. They beat him three times during the regular season when he was with Houston. Oswalt pitched well in those games, but got no run support. He's beaten San Francisco twice with the Phillies.

Acquired from Houston on July 29, Oswalt went 7-1 with a 1.74 ERA in 13 games with the Phillies. Oswalt - not Halladay or Cole Hamels - was Philadelphia's best pitcher down the stretch. He was 7-0 with a 1.17 ERA in his last 10 starts.

``I want this guy pitching at home,' Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. ``He definitely is a competitor. You can tell that by how he gets the ball and throws it and some of the things he does, how he looks on the mound and everything. Presence counts. What you give off to the hitter and everything definitely counts a lot.'

The two-time NL champion Phillies are trying to force the first Game 7 in franchise history. In 1980, Mike Schmidt and Pete Rose led Philadelphia past Nolan Ryan and the Houston Astros in Game 5 when the NLCS was a best-of-five series.

Hamels, the 2008 World Series MVP, is scheduled to start against Matt Cain on Sunday night if the Phillies survive their second straight do-or-die game. Hamels could even get the call at some point Saturday instead.

``Depends on where we're at in the situation,' Manuel said. ``Do I want to? No. More than likely I won't, but at the same time, I'm not ruling it out.'

Neither team worked out Friday. The Phillies flew home after extending the series Thursday night. The Giants made the cross-country trip on Friday, and their flight got delayed before taking off because President Barack Obama and Air Force One were arriving in San Francisco.

``We've been tested all year. You go back to early August, we've been playing big games,' Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. ``We were 6 1/2-7 games back. Went down to the wire playing Atlanta and now we're here in Philly, playing a tremendous team that's been to the World Series the last two years. No question, that's a test. But these guys, they've been battle-tested. And we know we're playing a club that's loaded with experience, and they are, too. But I like the way my team has handled everything thrown at them and they'll go out there and give it their all. And that's all you can ask.'
